Ann Magnuson is an Artist, Activist, Singer, Writer and Actor who is known for her psychedelic skewering of societal norms. Starting out in thfe underground cabaret clubs of 1980s New York, she explored the murky places in between the wacky, obscene and poignant. Her band Bongwater managed to use the framework of 1960s counter culture to hold a mirror to the horrors of AIDS, Reagan and Evangelical lies. Ann also has a career as a mainstream actress, and is featured in many films and television shows including a notorious small role getting killed by david bowie in The Hunger. She is still making amazing music and monologues, including a youtube series called "2020 WTF" and currently has roles on the television show "picard" and "Man in the High castle." This is a tribute to Ann, a sound collage pulled from different moments of her career. Every excerpt chosen here is either performed, written by Ann Magnuson/ bongwater or is a song that she covered. Through her art, Ann has introduced me to a wide variety of formative favorites like 13th floor Elevators, notorious J and H productions tape and even Little Markie.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

It' been a very weird day - for the first half of the day it was scorchingly hot, really unbearable, and now it's grey and they're predicting rain and thunder. I have no idea what's going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi chresti!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'm not familiar with Ann so really looking forward to getting an education today. :-) This track is a great introduction!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm ARB:

I just had the urge to record this show on cassette and then remembered about the archives
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Arb - Oh my God ... we could do tape archives of our shows for the marathon :-) <3
Avatar 2:08pm solo mon:

Just a friendly warning theres some cuss words coming and simulated sex. but it all is in the vein of social commentary. anyhow...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Rich in Washington:

I love Ann and Bongwater so much!
Avatar 2:10pm solo mon:

Yay rich me too, this show could have been 4 hours long honestly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm ARB:

Me too, this is comfort music for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Avatar 2:11pm solo mon:

Hi ARB ! It comforts me so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Rich in Washington:

Hi GeorgyGirl!
Hi everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm ARB:

Didn't know about 2020 wtf though, after party will be there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I have these sense memories of encountering Ann before. Throughout the 90s there were so many late night culture programmes on Channel 4 here in the UK (back when Channel 4 was edgy and interesting) and a lot of it was reporting from New York (Club Kids, art etc). This is definitely ringing bells for me. :-)
  2:16pm zzmm:

Avatar 2:16pm solo mon:

This is a section of evangelical parodies Ann has done over the years. Little markie parody coming up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Rich in Washington:

I was a huge fan of the band Shockabilly, from which Bongwater came out of. Their first EP was and still is a favorite. Then Bongwater really got me into Ann.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm ARB:

Rich, me too. I still get a kick out of their cover of "Oh Yoko" such an inspired choice
Avatar 2:19pm solo mon:

I didnt put any shocakabilly on the show, we need a part 2 already!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Rich in Washington:

I have been toying with doing an all Shockabilly show. Recently got some amazing live recordings from Eugene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm ARB:

I saw her perform for my first time a couple years ago, actually kinda suffered through an entire fest of sorts just to see her
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Rich in Washington:

I once did an all Shockabilly show on KBOO and someone kept calling, really irate that The Beatles and Creedence would be covered so irreverently. He eventually not only threatened to stop pledging money to the station, but also threatened to burn the station down.
I told Eugene about this and he seemed to think it was a fairly typical reaction.
Avatar 2:23pm Mr Fab:

Ha! He must have been new to your show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm ARB:

^^ha! wow, threats of arson, every artists dream
Avatar 2:23pm solo mon:

Thats why I love shockabilly! we used to play it at closing time the store i worked at. usually cleared the place in minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm ARB:

That's why I feel like such an extraterrestrial, I would clear out if the originals came on but shockabilly would cause me to linger
Avatar 2:25pm solo mon:

Sylvester as a village voice critic! This is from 1983?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

This is great, solo mon! I for some reason lost track of Ann's later work.
Avatar 2:26pm solo mon:

This is early ann!!! like before bong water
Avatar 2:26pm solo mon:

Im playing a really long piece from 2007 later in the show.
Avatar 2:28pm solo mon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm ARB:

2020 version would be: Don't Criticize, Cancel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Rich in Washington:

that too! Really had no idea of who Ann was before Bongwater, but then later learned her role in Downtown NY music scene.
Avatar 2:30pm solo mon:

This is so fun !!! AND IT'S ART
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm ARB:

"Brad" is her "Fang"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow. Had no idea she had anything to do with ART!
Avatar 2:31pm solo mon:

Rich its not completely confirmed about ART but god it sure sounds like it, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Rich in Washington:

A couple of years ago Mykel Board did this thing were if you mailed him something like $5, he'd stick as many 7" records as he could in a prepaid mailer. I did it a couple of times and got a bunch of ART/Artless (etc.) 7"s, plus random 45s from his collection.
Avatar 2:32pm Mr Fab:

There was a store that used play Wild Man Fischer to clear out the customers. Of course, had the opposite effect on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Rich in Washington:

She IS listed on that ART release. I just looked it up. I had no idea.
Avatar 2:33pm solo mon:

That Art 45 i played ( an mp3 of ) is a left channel right channel (dif tracked depending on channel)
Avatar 2:34pm solo mon:

oops different song on left/ right channels lol ART
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Rich in Washington:

When I was going to school and living with a bunch of goofballs, our house parties would sometimes go on a little too long and we'd put Butthole Surfers Live Bootleg, side four on and people would slowly drift on home.
Avatar 2:35pm Mr Fab:

oh year, ART, i remember them from The "You'll Hate This Record" Record , a truly messed up comp.
Avatar 2:35pm solo mon:

I learned about the movie Bedazzled through this song!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Why do I have the distinct feeling that Katya Zamolodchikova is a fan? ;-)
Avatar 2:36pm solo mon:

Not sure any of those young queens know abt Ann, but us oldsters sure do ;-)
Avatar 2:37pm Franco Twinkie:

Some time in the early-mid 80's the painter Kenny Scharf had his first one man show in Los Angeles at Larry Gagosian, which was on Robertson Blvd. at the time. The day I went to see it, the only two people in the gallery were Kenny and Ann. I just walked up to Kenny who was fooling around with a video camera and started blabbing. One of his early pieces was a Cadillac that he had painted up real nice. It was parked in the gallery. I was bugging him with all kinds of questions so he said "Why don't you film me in front of the car?" I said sure! and took the camera. At one point I looked over at Ann who was sitting in a chair wearing a short skirt and knee high black boots. She had her legs crossed and was wiggling her leg back and forth staring at me with a curious look that seemed to say "Who let you in. and when are you going to leave?" I can still see it in my mind all these years later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@solo - She has that performance art background tho and is closer to 40 than 30. lol. . :-)
Avatar 2:37pm solo mon:

Bongwater has only 4 albums but approx 16 cover songs.
Avatar 2:40pm solo mon:

ha Franco, Dont pull focus w Ann! Kenny scharf is such a great artist too!
Avatar 2:41pm Mr Fab:

Franco: I saw that car last year at the Lowbrow show at the Peterson Automotive Museum! Don't think i saw miss Ann there tho. Too bad, that sounds like a pretty hot outfit.
Avatar 2:42pm solo mon:

hahahaha this cracks me up!
Avatar 2:45pm solo mon:

Kenny S has done some public art up here in Portland, i forget where...
Avatar 2:46pm solo mon:

I couldnt do this show without playing nick cave dolls
Avatar 2:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Ann is hot! But she works at it. One night when Ann was Chrestis over the back fence neighbor, I looked out the window and Ann was exercising in her living room, vigorously!
Avatar 2:47pm solo mon:

Im gay and I think Ann is hot! Now.
  2:47pm ARB:

I want one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Rich in Washington:

Kenny Scharf lives in Portland? Or just visits? Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, solo mon! This song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

PORPOISE SONG!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

This track has some very special associations for me <3
Avatar 2:49pm solo mon:

I watched the movie head because she covered this song. i was not a monkees fan before NOW. omg i love em more than the beatles (sorry GG)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Rich in Washington:

I had this single but lost it! I think I left it at the station. I cannot blame whoever kept it, but still sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

"Head" is a masterpiece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Rich in Washington:

I know! Some of those Shimmy Disc acts sort of drew us to the 60s catalog that they drew from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Rich in Washington:

Oh yeah!
Avatar 2:50pm solo mon:

Has everyone listened to the original porpoise demo by carole king? on youtube. its beautttifulllllll and very low quality recording :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@solo - Yep. Genius level <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

@solo - I also saw The Polyphonic Spree do it as an encore, which was frankly a spiritual experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Rich in Washington:

In so many ways, Mark Kramer was a genius. I don't think there are too many people who he's crossed paths with artistically who had favorable experiences with him, unfortunately, Ann being a prime example.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Rich in Washington:

You just reminded me about those demos, solo mon. I need them. I love Carole King.
Avatar 2:52pm solo mon:

Yeah, theres one Kramer onlysong coming up. That I think sums him up perfectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I refuse to watch that new Laurel Canyon movie because Carole King gets a passing mention and there is NO mention at all of Joni Mitchell. Who made this damn film??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Rich in Washington:

I meant to type 'unfavorable' re: Kramer, but I think you get what I'm on about.
Avatar 2:54pm solo mon:

The darkness within bongwater is part of the spell, i think. Carole such an incredible songwriter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, never mean. I see what I did.
Avatar 2:55pm solo mon:

I love this johnny cash cover
Avatar 2:55pm solo mon:

reminds me of Opal
Avatar 2:56pm Franco Twinkie:

The night I saw Bongwater at Luna Park. The artist Mike Kelly was her drummer. He just stared straight ahead like was playing behind a burlesque act, bored out of his mind and only thinking about pizza and beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Got myself in a lather there. As you were . Lol.
Avatar 2:57pm Mr Fab:

haha, to be fair, every pic of Mike Kelly he looks like that.
Avatar 2:58pm Mr Fab:

no mention of Joni in a film allegedly about Laurel Canyon? Perhaps she didn't give permission. I've heard she's become a bit, er, "difficult" lately.
Avatar 2:58pm solo mon:

This one is Kramer to a T i think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Rich in Washington:

I loved all the audio vérité in Bongwater albums.
Avatar 2:59pm solo mon:

Why do as we do? why do we do
Avatar 2:59pm solo mon:

truth tellers lie to tell the truth
Avatar 3:02pm Franco Twinkie:

This is true, Fab. One night at The Box we were yukking it up with some of his cohorts and I glanced over at him and he was looking at Chresti with an expression that was most indescribable.
Avatar 3:03pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Avatar 3:03pm solo mon:

Bongwater also one of the reasons I got into cut ups and sound collage. They had some great stuff in there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm ARB:

I think the year I discovered Bongwater must have also been the year I discovered damiana. There's some synesthesia going on.
Avatar 3:03pm solo mon:

YES Hi Marshall! YES its from the cinemax hit VANDEMONIUM!
Avatar 3:03pm solo mon:

Avatar 3:04pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar 3:18pm solo mon:

Its just conceptual doubt, Coel. ;-)
Avatar 3:18pm Mr Fab:

yeah, interesting how you learned so much solo just thru Ann M/Bongwater. i picked it up piecemeal over the years, e.g. Rpdney Bingenheimer ending his shows with "The Porpoise Song." (He used to play Roky, too) I dont' even know how i learned about stuff like Little Markie. Bits n bobs over the years. We need a Great Big Book of Cool Stuff encyclopedia for every kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm ARB:

I may be a baby here but I'm at least gonna be the baby from Roger Rabbit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Rich in Washington:

I think this song compelled the big butterfly to fly into my house. I'm now waving my arms around trying to guide them out again, lest they attract the attention of one of our cats, who love snatching flying insects out of the air.
