Good morning Joe. Love the international takes on these songs. Makes me feel like I’m in one of those little ethnic grocery stores discovering rare and exotic fruit and vegetables. I love that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Handy Haversack:

Good morning, Joe and all the Yippers! Sorry I'm late.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am David (in London):

Brian, ghastly here too. I went to a birthday picnic yesterday on Walthamstow Marshes, and we kept having to dive for cover to avoid the sudden downpours. Still, large amounts of booze helped cushion the blow. Monday is less considerably less cheery though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am YETI BOB:

Do you think Rod Stewart is sexy?

Busy working, but thank you for the Sabado Gigante shoutout! I used to watch it every Saturday with my dad, despite neither of us speaking a word of Spanish. The gong show segments where the losers got dragged into a cave by a guy in a lion costume were peak television.

"In your company/I feel happy" @Dobalina/Oscar: I don't speak Spanish either but I used to love to watch "Sabado Gigante." Those commercials the announcers did were like 1950s TV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am WoodsOfNH:

Is that how a person should get rid of his Starland Vocal Band album? Asking for a friend.

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63 I think this is going to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am mariano:

'Morning Joe, everyone. Mr Dobalina: wow, there's a name I wasn't expecting to see. Chespirito was all the rage in Latin America when I was a kid. My aunt and uncle took me to see them live (mid-70s) when they came to Honduras. Señor Barriga shook my hand as they were exiting to the tour bus. No, I won't sign autographs.
Avatar 9:52am Joe McG:

I watched "Meantime" over the weekend and there's a memorable scene at a laundromat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am mariano:

That's a great movie, "My Beautiful Laundrette".
Avatar 9:54am Joe McG:

@Mike and mariano: I haven't seen it in years, but I remember liking it.

Avatar 9:59am Joe McG:

@Brendan: Ha ha ha!
Avatar 10:00am Mike W:

My Beautiful Launderette was one of my brother’s favorites from that era when he and his friends were diving into post-punk and new wave...and me, five years younger, was just flabbergasted by all of it, in the best way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am karlward:

It's like David Lowery from Camper Van Beethoven is singing a Jonathan Richman song, with REM backing him up. This is amazing.

Avatar 10:02am waters7:

Go Mavis, go!
Avatar 10:04am PKNY:

OK, Mavis, if you insist!
Avatar 10:05am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well Dylan wants to marry her.
Avatar 10:06am Joe McG:

@PKNY: Yeah, his fingerprint is like Jeff Lynne's, you can't miss it. Except I like his productions a lot more than Jeff Lynne's.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Handy Haversack:

Hey, Mariano!
Avatar 10:14am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Guido: A lot of times I like the sketch or study better than a completed painting - how I think of it...
  10:15am MplsCoco:

Guido. I agree. She sounds a bit more "like everyone else" with everything else going on. Her albums have good production and bass. But she's pretty solid in the "tiny desk" style vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am karlward:

Joe's crush velvet smoking jacket is ON with this track.

Hippo Lady?
Avatar 10:21am Joe McG:

@Jim: Have you been watching "The New Zoo Revue"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am WoodsOfNH:

@Guido Agree. Have a friend who was gushing about her new record and it didn't do a lot or me. But then I see her performing live (like the Tiny Desk show) and really, really love it.
Avatar 10:25am PKNY:

I remember when I first starting collecting records, I picked up the Wattstax soundtrack for a $1. Public Enemy pulled a ton of dialogue from the soundtrack on their "Nation of Millions" record
Avatar 10:27am Joe McG:

@PKNY: $1!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am deborah:

Will rewatch My Beautiful Launderette. Saw it twice but need to see it again to be able to talk about it and feel it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Handy Haversack:

Heck of a set, Joe. If I can say "heck" after that song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jim the Poet:

I love New Zoo Revue!
Avatar 10:31am PKNY:

@Joe - back then, a $1 went a long way as far as records! If I knew then what I'd know now, as far as price inflation on records...whew!

Cool '60s harpsichord, and a great Collins album: "In My Life." A Richard Fariña tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am tim from champaign (now washington):

Hey Joe - record nerd question here. What does the Elektra logo look like on the Judy Collins single? Is is the earlier logo or the more familiar, well- know one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am mariano:

That's very kind of you, Tim, but what about the song?!

Seriously though, I don't think that's it in terms of the one I'm thinking of. It was one passage in particular, and I can hear the damn thing in my head, it has a faster tempo.
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@tim: It's the white "E" in a burgundy and black mosaic pattern above a pink lower label.
Avatar 10:45am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Carl's version of his own song is (already) more 'Elvis' than I remembered....

Did Loudon Wainwright write this?
Avatar 10:50am Joe McG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am David (in London):

Man, that Fireballet cover was surely designed to draw in anyone unsure about the contents. I mean, who wouldn't want to take a punt on that one..?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am David (in London):

Bob Seger's tribute to Patrick McGoohan.
  11:03am Dean:

Their first album was marketed far more seriously, with a quintessential prog cover and a side devoted to Mussourgsky's Night on Bald Mountain.
Avatar 11:03am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& all that early BobSeeger that's great & no one hears...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am mariano:

Oh yeah I think you're right, Brian. Older slang though, 60s-70s.

Lol David. Imagine how different the opening credits would've been with that song.

I never would put Eno and Seger in the same category, but wow, there it is, code cracked indeed!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am swivs:

In Seger's defense, there are only 12 notes to work with.
  11:07am yerfriendpaul:

I’m gonna give Seger a pass on that one, but definitely hear the similarities
  11:07am paul:

Was that the title cut from HCTWJ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am WoodsOfNH:

It's a well-known fact that Bob Seger's favorite album is Ambient 1: Music for Airports

If you take three letters out of 'Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band' - e, n and o - you get Eno. Q.E.D. It was there in plain sight all along.

  11:12am BetsyO:

As a old Michigan girl, early Seger really rocks, and his songs had socially important messages in them, talking late 60’s and early 70’s. Seeing him live then was special,... though by the mid to late 70’s, his sound became a bit too big and over produced for my taste, but his early garage style records and ballads were bone rattling intense!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Roger:

I always thought that WAS a Loudon song, its on his T Shirt lp.

@Tim from Champaign,... the Detroit, Flint & AnnArbor music scene in those years produced some really great rock and roll music,... must of been all those metal stamping machines and the pouring of melted steel combined with a blue collar work ethic,... all swirled and filleted with the soulful psychedelic chaotic times it all found itself in.
