Considering how big Australia is, what was the population in the mid '60s? 10 million folks? I wonder what the average sales of a #1 single were there in, say, 1966?

It's funny how Aussie band names are more complex.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
Funky16Corners:

The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band and Strawberry Alarm Clock were all American
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
Mike Sin:

The song publishing companies really worked the markets back in those days because of the high stakes... I love how "She Does Everything For Me" and "You're Gonna Miss Me" were given to Australian artists to break in that region.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Candy-O'67:

Who did the Aussie You're Gonna Miss Me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Mike Sin:

@Candy -- Tom Thumb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Little Danny:

These Aussie beat 45s seem to fall somewhere between the impeccable UK beat production style and the scrappiness of local U.S. garage bands. In least in terms of their production and grit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm

@Brian - That seems likely, it was produced by Shel Talmy

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm

Guessing that it was similar in Aussie to the UK when the R'nB/Beat groups almost over night grew hair and found phasing/flanging.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Funky16Corners:

Well, this one is pretty late in the game (1969), but the trends there followed everywhere else, beat, garage, psych, hard rock etc
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm

One thing that took Australia a while to get was color TV. Whenever I see clips from even the early '70s, I always end up thinking they're older because it's all in B&W until 1972 or such.

It was awesome. Tiny bar that a lot of great alternative bands played at because we had a commercial alternative station in the area

Candy-O'67:

Cool! I actually saw them right before they hit it big back in Houston at a small club called Cardi's. I had a few girls I hung out with that were kind of groupies and we followed their tour bus to way west side of town where they were staying and sat at the bar and their roadies ended up talking to us and inviting us up to someone's room to party with the band! It was a blast! I was 16! One of my girlfriends traded T-shirts with Michael Hutchence! I'll never forget that!

Dare I say, the only time I saw Midnight Oil was when they played in front of the Exxon headquarters in NYC after the Alaskan oil spill. The did a cover of "Instant Karma"
