A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar 7:02pm Linda Lee:

beautiful opener! hi Rich! all ears, but working.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm solo mon:

Yes!!! Love this soundtrack
Avatar 7:03pm Don-O:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm solo mon:

Rich always w the best color combos
7:03pm Kat in Chicago in the app:

I have to be off chat for a bit as well, but will be listening for the duration!
Avatar 7:03pm Linda Lee:

i'd be happy sticking with this soundtrack in entirety!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Mr Fab:

Thanks Don-O, that Carlin had me laffin like nothing else has lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm solo mon:

Ooh ARB I love that visual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Yvang:

I recently watched the short version of THX by Georges Lucas I didn't know it existed, not Lalo soundtracked.
Avatar 7:04pm Linda Lee:

just love the vibe tonight. thanks Rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Rich in Washington:

Hi everybody!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Mr Fab:

Yvang: it was his USC student film at first, from what I recall (film grad here)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm melinda:

hiya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm solo mon:

In heaven rn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Rich in Washington:

I really want to see the unadulterated version of THX again. The recently meddled with version is really silly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Rich in Washington:

so weird playing the THX opening for me. It was my opening song for many years on a show I did about ten years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Uncle Michael:

I probably only ever saw the real thing on public television in Chicago when I was in high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm solo mon:

Ahhh Laibach
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Rich in Washington:

I also remember it being on television. So confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Rich in Washington:

Mina Spiler singing. Just heavenly.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Mr Fab:

Pretty highbrow music for Sheena's here! Rich is gonna speak in one of those ponderous classical announcer voices: "You've been listening to...music of the Slovakian ensemble Laibach...performed by the composers...this is taken from their Mute release, catalog number...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Rich in Washington:

The doc about Laibach in North Korea is pretty amusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm solo mon:

Lol and then play the champagne commercial from Orson Welles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Yvang:

Recuring, closing sounds and bed music choices by DJ's on radio shows have a powerful effect on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm ultradamno:

Very Julee Cruseish...waiting for a white horse and a giant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Rich in Washington:

Careful, Fab! I have classical records and know how to play 'em!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm solo mon:

Or like a Teutonic beach house
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm solo mon:

I just remember being told “don’t clap until the conductor turns around!”
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Mr Fab:

I was thinking Julie Cruise, too. Still love those '90s albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm solo mon:

I feel like half of the indie bands kids listen to nowadays sound like julee cruise and the other half sound like broadcast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Hey there, Rich and WFMU buddies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm solo mon:

Hey Gran!
Avatar 7:15pm ironybread:

Man, nothing says 1990s as much as the outline of the tray insert of a CD single!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Mr Fab:

Li'l Fab came by again and noticed with delight Uncle Michael's animated Pufnstuf. (Yes, we have indoctrinated our child into the the world of Sid n Marty Kroft.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Rich in Washington:

Granny!
ironybread!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm ultradamno:

Well, you can't get canceled if no one can tell what you're intoning
Avatar 7:16pm Linda Lee:

Granny. :-)
Avatar 7:16pm ironybread:

May I just say I don't goddamned miss CD singles at all! Any idea how frustrating it was to have to buy four different CD singles to get all the bonus tracks for the second Ben Folds Five album?
  7:16pm Martinibomb:

lovin it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm ultradamno:

But cassingles were the shit! Great for the car!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Fuzzy:

We blew it, man.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm WR:

Is this what I've been listening to? People just like us?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm melinda:

Miller!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm ultradamno:

Tracy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm solo mon:

I hated those soft cd boxes almost as much as I hated jewel cases ugh plastic! And not the pretty kind.
Avatar 7:18pm ironybread:

Hello all you glorious weirdos.
Avatar 7:18pm Linda Lee:

singles carried in a small square box made of balsawood & covered with lightly quilted fabric, with a metal latch for the top & a handle, was really very nice. some fancy ones had files for storing your singles alphabetically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

this will be my supper-cooking soundtrack
Avatar 7:18pm ARB:

jewel cases could be the bakelite of the future
Avatar 7:19pm ironybread:

Yes Linda Lee, that is a class solution for carrying a set of 45s. Hooray for physical objects.
Avatar 7:19pm ARB:

show spanning bus riding propaganda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm solo mon:

Omg arb ya know how you have to rub and smell to make sure it’s really Bakelite?
Avatar 7:20pm ARB:

i know about it but never cultivated the talent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm solo mon:

Gran what’s for supper?? I gotta start thinking bout that too
Avatar 7:20pm Linda Lee:

i'm fully in favor of physical, tangible objects that belong to me, for use without paying repeatedly for using them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm solo mon:

I used to be a vintage buyer, my boss taught me this. You have to rub it w your finger and it gives off a distinct eraser like smell - it’s kinda nasty!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm melinda:

@ultradamno according to the internet Tracy Walter is from Jersey City. I didn't know that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm solo mon:

I was imagining future collectors rubbing and smelling jewel cases to make sure it’s authentic.
Avatar 7:22pm ARB:

i know that smell, the smell of my old dogs farts was Burning Eraser
Avatar 7:23pm Linda Lee:

wow! what did your dog eat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm solo mon:

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Avatar 7:23pm ARB:

Jewel Case Sniffers
Avatar 7:23pm ARB:

I grew to love that smell
Avatar 7:23pm βrian:

I love those tasty tangibles, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm solo mon:

Ok jewel case sniffers file under good band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm ultradamno:

@melinda That's like a lattice of coinkydink or something.
Avatar 7:24pm ARB:

Blade Runner is in the top ten list of movies I haven't seen that seems to produce anger in people when they find out I haven't seen
Avatar 7:24pm Linda Lee:

i've got many of those in mind for myself, ARB :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm solo mon:

I have a few really cute 45 holders, and a vintage 10” metal one exclusively for square dance records
Avatar 7:25pm ARB:

We can have a band based on odors, Solo, kind of like Odorama but in band form
Avatar 7:25pm Linda Lee:

actually, Blush Response isn't bad band name either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm melinda:

@ARB haha
Avatar 7:25pm Linda Lee:

not a bad one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm solo mon:

ARB can we please I love odorama
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm solo mon:

Linda Lee I love that
Avatar 7:26pm Sonderangebot:

I will have a showing of Blade Runner in Odorama at my house, just for you.
Avatar 7:26pm Blush Response:

i usually change my handle when something comes up.. this is a good one. problem: i don't blush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm solo mon:

I will admit I haven’t watched blade runner in entirety ever and I’m a film major lol
Avatar 7:26pm ARB:

That's the ONLY way I can be convinced to see it, thank you Sonderangebot!
Avatar 7:27pm Blush Response:

i've never seen Twin Peaks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm solo mon:

Linda Lee’s Blush Response
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Rich in Washington:

That sounds wonderful, Sonderangebot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

i'll bet Blade Runner Odorama would smell really awful!!!
Avatar 7:27pm ARB:

Linda Lee, that's a real super power-not blushing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Rich in Washington:

I always imagined Rick Deckard wore atrocious cologne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm solo mon:

Sonderangebot! Yay!!!!
Avatar 7:27pm βrian:

@Blush: How about the Grand Tetons?
Avatar 7:28pm ARB:

My superpower would be the ability to shit other peoples pants
Avatar 7:28pm Blush Response:

not at all.
Avatar 7:28pm ironybread:

ARB: I'm not going to go all hipster on you, I have a genuine and unsullied enthusiasm for Blade Runner and I strongly recommend finding the "Final Cut" Blu-ray and blasting your evening into the shoulder of Orion.
Avatar 7:28pm Blush Response:

speaking of, haven't seen Eraserhead either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

my basmati is already bad-o-lamenti, alas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm ultradamno:

Messer Chups have an awesome surf cover of this

You must see Eraserhead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm solo mon:

My superpower would be to projectile vomit accurately and violently across the universe
Avatar 7:28pm ARB:

I haven't even seen Star Wars
Avatar 7:29pm Sonderangebot:

Now we can figure out how androids smell like
Avatar 7:29pm ARB:

But I was a fan of the Ewok spinoff tv show
Avatar 7:29pm Don-O:

ARB, lucky you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm ultradamno:

You can skip any star war.
Avatar 7:29pm ironybread:

ARB: I'll never think of a better superpower in my life. Well done
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

the other day i saw a car with two bumperstickers i coveted: "Eraserhead Baby Is My Co-Pilot" and "What Year Is It?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm solo mon:

Probably smell like electric wool
Avatar 7:30pm Blush Response:

so androids smell like electric sheep?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm solo mon:

Never been into Star Wars yes I know my name is solo, so?
Avatar 7:30pm ironybread:

A great boring description of the plot of Eraserhead could be: "Philadelphia man has first-time baby jitters".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm solo mon:

My other car is eraserhead baby
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

solo mon: i can quit Bitchin' Sauce anytime i want to. And i don't want to! (chipotle)
Avatar 7:31pm Blush Response:

i was forced to bring a young friend to see Star Wars when it was released. no avoiding it.
Avatar 7:31pm ARB:

Thank you Ironybread
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm ultradamno:

I saw the first star war when I was a kid on vacation in Daytona Beach, I haven't seen the rest because Alien. Once face huggers were an option...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Aitch:

Bladerunner would smell like garbage-truck juice
Avatar 7:31pm ARB:

Granny those are both fabulous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm ultradamno:

Meets singer near wall.
Avatar 7:32pm ARB:

I have a bumper sticker that says "Waiting For Mr. Right" with a picture of a skeleton sitting on a bench and one that says ARB from the 4wd company
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm solo mon:

Oh man I just have a WFMU sticker on my car.
Avatar 7:33pm Blush Response:

i've never kept bumper stickers on my car for the same reason i have no tattoos. no identifying marks seemed best for a time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Aitch: yeah, something like that, with lots of smog
Avatar 7:33pm βrian:

"Waiting For Mr. Right" while parked in the left turn lane, hazards flashing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm solo mon:

I got the BEST postcard from granny yesterday though, and got to see the mail carrier read and react to it which made it even more special!
Avatar 7:34pm Blush Response:

i've also never owned a red car. we called it 'hello officer red'.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Mr Fab:

ARB: er, what does Carlos think of that bumper sticker?

i bought a Star Wars t-shirt at a thrift, and painted "I hate" above it.
(I don't even really hate it, just tired of its cultural domination.) (And thought it was funny)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm ultradamno:

I wouldn't mind this one twitter.com...
Avatar 7:35pm Blush Response:

not 'sposed to read our mail, Mr Carrier!
Avatar 7:35pm ARB:

Carlos is pretty much a skeleton so he's fine with it
Avatar 7:35pm Sonderangebot:

What was on that postcard, solo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm ultradamno:

Then you see something like this and think "why invite vandalism?" twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

i'm smiling and laughing at all these posts, and trying not to burn my supper!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Mr Fab:

i put bumper stickers on magnets so they can be easily removed. Which someone did do to my WFMU sticker.
Avatar 7:36pm Linda Lee:

hell of a way to get lucky there, Trucker..
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Mr Fab:

he's not homophobic
Avatar 7:37pm Linda Lee:

nope. horny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm ultradamno:

I just figure the one getting all the action in that scenario is a centrist.
Avatar 7:38pm Linda Lee:

actually, it's not gay if you pay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm solo mon:

Sonder, it’s a postcard of Caroline Hennessy founder of BITCH, which stands for ballbreaker intent on totally castrating and humiliating
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm solo mon:

Naturally the mail carrier thought it was hilarious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm melinda:

@Blush Response I haven't seen Twin Peaks either. Or The Godfather.
Avatar 7:39pm ironybread:

Goodnight, Eraserhead Baby pbs.twimg.com...

Aw...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm ultradamno:

Yeah, I'd like a mural of that in my bedroom
Avatar 7:40pm Linda Lee:

i really should see Eraserhead, at very least.
Avatar 7:40pm Linda Lee:

then i can be hip too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm ultradamno:

It's my favorite movie. Certainly my favorite Lynch
Avatar 7:41pm Linda Lee:

i'd be so happy if we stay with this vibe, Rich. so happy. call it a late birthday present. ;-)
Avatar 7:41pm βrian:

I wish I had not seen the Matrix. What a waste of photons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm melinda:

I like the vibe too.
Avatar 7:41pm Linda Lee:

we only hit 60 once, baby!
Avatar 7:41pm Linda Lee:

really, Brian? it's not essential at this moment?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Rich in Washington:

I'm gonna try, LL!
Avatar 7:41pm ARB:

I've never seen the Matrix which is also on that top ten list
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm solo mon:

Oh yeah eraserhead is great. I love that one and inland empire the most.
Avatar 7:42pm Linda Lee:

just a couple more. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm ultradamno:

But having seen it you know which color pill does what, sort of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Rich in Washington:

I've never seen Mannix.
Avatar 7:42pm Linda Lee:

thank you! xx
Avatar 7:42pm ARB:

I just saw the sequel to Wild At Heart but it's not made by Lynch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm solo mon:

Eh the matrix is maybe non essential
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm solo mon:

Arb what??
Avatar 7:43pm Linda Lee:

'redpill' is now a verb!
Avatar 7:43pm ARB:

It's Mexican, and Screaming Jay is in it which was how I started thinking about Ice Cream Man actually, full circle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm melinda:

@Brian haha. I thought it was ok but had hoped to like it more.
@Linda indeed, usually used in an annoying way.
Avatar 7:44pm Linda Lee:

i should see Wild At Heart, but both the stars irritate me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm ultradamno:

I need to watch Inland Empire again, but like with Love Exposure I almost feel like I need to go through a physical training regimen for a month to get through the experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm melinda:

@Linda you don't like Laura Dern? I'm a big fan.
Avatar 7:44pm βrian:

If Gail Fisher had played the lead in The Matrix, it might be a different matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm solo mon:

I like the idea of the matrix especially now that we have gotten to see what happened to Lana’s journey. I say I loved sense8 even though it barely made sense it felt new and wild to me
Avatar 7:45pm Linda Lee:

oh my! John Somebody! i had this on a new music comp in the late 70s! i did some of this myself! tapes are lost, of course.
Avatar 7:45pm ironybread:

THE MANTRIX
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm ultradamno:

Wild At Heart was quite loud. Sheryl Lee is a great good witch.
Avatar 7:45pm ARB:

Nick Cage annoys me too but Wild At Heart has Willem Defoe so that makes up for it
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Aitch:

Nick Cage and Laura Dern a match made in heaven
Avatar 7:45pm Linda Lee:

do i have this wrong totally? it's older than 86, i'm sure!
Avatar 7:45pm Linda Lee:

wait, this is a newer version than i remember.
Avatar 7:45pm ARB:

I played Bobby Peru in a theatre version of Wild At Heart so I've seen it too much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm solo mon:

Oh man Laura Dern is the finest actress alive at this point but back then she was corny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm ultradamno:

Dern does some great huffin' in Citizen Ruth. twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm melinda:

@ultra-d I love Citizen Ruth. Great scene.
Avatar 7:47pm Linda Lee:

i'm seeing originally released in '82. i'm sorry, i was off by a few years there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm solo mon:

Have you all seen enlightened? The show she did holy crap it is soooooooo amazing and her mom is in it too as, her mom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm ultradamno:

Her mom's in Wild At Heart too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm solo mon:

Citizen Ruth was great. She really shined.
Avatar 7:48pm Linda Lee:

melinda, i can't explain. it might be the way she cries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm solo mon:

Yeah enlightened plays off the wild at heart scenario in a subtle way. But a lot more naturalistic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm melinda:

@solo mon yes! One of my favorite series of the last 10 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

oooh, are we talking Laura Dern? I must admit, i adore her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm solo mon:

Enlightened might be the best television show I’ve ever seen.
Avatar 7:50pm Linda Lee:

Weill!!! really?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm solo mon:

She is the only reason I watched that little big lies show omg she has really turned into the greatest actress of her age
Avatar 7:50pm Linda Lee:

there was renewed interest in Weill's music at about the same time as there was in Morricone's, mid 80s. i'm sure of that timeframe. ;-)

love the John Cameron. a perfect soundtrack to an amazing series of videos celebrating NYC in film, from the 60s thru the 80s, by Jonathan Hertzberg, called "Dirty Old New York". if you can catch the series, please do. what a fine character she was..
Avatar 8:03pm Linda Lee:

like the city in a dream now.
Avatar 8:03pm ironybread:

βrian: one of the best most ridiculous TV series ever. Do you mean you're going "fishing with John Lurie", i.e. going out in a boat with a friend no matter the circumstances and we may never see you again???

Wow, Dennis Hopper and Willem Defoe, my two boyfriends together in one tv show?

Fishing With John was a great series.

Avatar 8:12pm ironybread:

ARB: when you say "hill" do you mean you're in L.A. and we have Griffith Park between us, or is the hill the Flyover of all of middle America and you're in Brooklyn?
Avatar 8:12pm Linda Lee:

being without a creative discipline made me unusual, but 'model/muse' worked fine.
Avatar 8:13pm ARB:

IRONY: I mean Griffith Park
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm solo mon:

I consider model/muse a creative discipline
Avatar 8:14pm Sonderangebot:

Fishing with John is great! I like the episode with Jim Jarmusch because I can identify 'Why am I here' and just wearing the wrong clothes for the situation.

huh, i always thought "Laura Dern" was a character in some movie -not an actress.
...and thanks ARB for mentioning Willem Defoe. i've been trying to think of that name for a couple of years now! (seriously)
he used to shop in a store ("co-op") i worked at. i didn't know who he was, like most famous people; but he was friendly and seemed very decent.
the young ladies who worked there got excited when he came in.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm ultradamno:

My first experience with Videodrome was walking into the record store Second Time Around and they had it on just at the gnarled hand/tummy slit scene. Obviously, I became immediately obsessed.

Just Antichrist, my favorite! Aside Dogville, maybe.
Avatar 8:34pm Linda Lee:

*just* watched Kenneth Anger's films "Lucifer Rising", "Scorpio Rising" (wonderful) & "Invocation of my Demon Brother". such time pieces! i found the sountracks mosttt interesting, especially for "Scorpio Rising" ~ early 60s pop hits accompanying an adoring meditation on male bikers. the soundtracks. the "Demon Brother" soundtrack was a bit of electronic noodling by a singer named Mick Jagger.

Interesting - in 1992 I had no William Burroughs reading experience, so I had no expectations for the movie. I was just a sensitive gay guy who'd been shocked and simultaneously cried at "Dead Ringers" so I knew "Naked Lunch" was a new film by a director I cared about
