Doug Schulkind:

The trombonist on this Frank Gratkowski number is pretty damn wonderful: Wolter Wierbos.

TDK60:

I heard what you mean about the A. Salim. Love the spiritual-Trane-and-after stuff.
Avatar 11:06am
Listener Gregory:

The trombone has fallen on hard times, I feel. Jeb Bishop is the only prominent contemporary player who comes to mind (although earlier generation people are still active). But is there any jazz "star" who plays the trombone?

George Lewis?

Interesting, that Abdu Salim piece. Out of Montauban in Occitanie in Southwest France. The only release on New Face records, Discogs tells me. Oh and hi, pop pickers!

@Stanley
At first I thought you said "rash."

HUGO!
Avatar 11:09am
Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, I don't think he has name recognition outside of the free jazz circle. Also, he's 68. It's easy to name a half-dozen saxophone, trumpet, or keyboard players who are "stars" (must use quotes). Drummers too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am
Stanley:

No Doug, the other stuff you play does that. But I've always got ointment, at hand.

@Hugo: Not 'arf!

Jeff Golick:

Jacob Garchick is doing cool stuff on trombone (tho might be better known as a composer). Samuel Blaser? Ok, I am reaching, and concede the point!
Avatar 11:11am

I am sorry to win this argument. But Jeb Bishop is great if people aren't familiar with him.

I was wondering the other day, why clarinet faded in jazz after the '30-'40s. It did, right?
Avatar 11:15am
Listener Gregory:

@TDK60, I think it's often attributed to better recording, so that the not-as-piercing instruments could be heard. In the old days, you needed a clarinet to play high to be heard through the trombone and trumpet.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15am

Jeff@10:19, right? I would stare at the player for a second before I realized I had to hit "play".

I liked the Tony Scott records that he made in the later 60’s - especially the wackier ones, dueting with sitars, etc.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:17am
listener Rey:

@TDK360, I think it also had an old-timey dixieland rep among the younger musicians who were listening to bebop

@Stanley: If I were to be fully authentic, if should be Greetings, pop pickers. But who's quibbling?
Avatar 11:18am
Listener Gregory:

@bigplanet, I read last night that when McCoy Tyner left the Coltrane Quartet, he joined Tony Scott's group. I couldn't believe it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
Doug Schulkind:

@bigplanetnoise
Why am I not surprised by that?
  11:20am

@Listener Gregory - at that point, Tony was pretty experimental, kind of an anything-goes player - at that time.

There was a Tribute to Roswell Rudd in Brooklyn a year and a half ago, no shortage of fine players in a Trombone group lead by Garchik (mentioned by Jeff above)...
artvoice.com...

(I alsodon't think there EVER were as many "star" trombonist as there are sax, trumpet, piano, etc. It's a notoriously difficult instrument to play).

@doctorj, you're probably right about the relative prevalence of trombone stars, but I can name a few in the swing and bebop eras, as well as post-Coltrane, but not so many now.
Avatar 11:28am

Thanks listener Rey, for that angle. I was guessing it was because sax took over as it was more expressive and easier to bend notes; not sure.
