This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Lotta Disco of late? Summer thing?
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

great production on this Lyn Christopher man
Avatar 7:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well if so '73 was ahead of the curve...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm WR:

Hi all drummer explorers. Evan, the artwork is sorta like Dali but more raw than anything I remember from him. Seems like something from some one with vocabulary of Dali and Max Ernst or something.
Avatar 7:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Deffo Dali - bit Muralist - Bosch even here or there...
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Hi WR, it's Masson, who was just as big in the movement as Dali or Ernst, so that makes sense; at that time Surrealism was much more collectivist with regards to individual aesthetic as well
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Masson the great proponent of "automatic drawing", hugely influential on Dali's own Paranoiac-critical method
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

forgot about this Eric Lou Root for a long time, putting it on again it's still incredibly awesome
Avatar 7:21pm Frog Mover:

Evening y'all! Nothin like some good Root
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

Hey there Frog Mo
Avatar 7:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting !
Amusical Eelektric Gittar abuse - now we're in my little wheelhouse...
Avatar 7:23pm TDK60:

What's happnin?
Avatar 7:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting re Masson. Cheers.
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

Hey TDK!
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

@Rev: I think you'd really dig Masson's stuff actually, highly demented
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

also demented: that Root guitar abuse, I agree
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

"might I remind you, the studio real cloudy"
Avatar 7:29pm Little Danny:

Hey Flash, hey all
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD!
Avatar 7:41pm Little Danny:

This Soviet electronic ambience is all brand new to me, I wonder what kinda synths they're using?
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

I wonder too - that first track was the Synthy-100 though
Avatar 7:43pm Little Danny:

I'm lovin' it all either way. There's something indefinably '80s Soviet era about it to me, maybe it's the guitar tones
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

here's the cover for the next selection, speaking of indefinably '80s Soviet era: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 7:46pm Frog Mover:

Diggin this Soviet funk!
Avatar 7:47pm Little Danny:

Oh wow yes
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

me too froggy
Avatar 7:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Watching 'How The Beatles Rocked the Kremlin' (which reportedly even Gorbachev acknowledges) - & the lengths they went to then to create Gittars. They stole Stalinist loudspeakes off poles - &tc. Quite a doc.

Avatar 8:00pm Little Danny:

Is there a music theory name for this kind of (ultra-close?) harmony?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm melinda:

Hi gang!
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

not sure LD, but I'd like to know
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

simply one of my very favorite albums, this
Avatar 8:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Do they not have their own 'half Eastern' scale - correlating to their unique geography?
Avatar 8:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- intervals...
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Czukay's compositions on this LP meander in this beautiful way, they feel unpredictable to me no matter how many times I've heard them
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

of course we have Liebezeit on drums here, but I think on this track we have Czukay on virtually every other instrument
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

& editing/producing naturally. tho Conny Plank is credited as an advisor
Avatar 8:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Even if they're all you - having to track everything together thru those meanders...
Avatar 8:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...called a Composer I reckon...
Avatar 8:17pm TDK60:

Groovy stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm chresti:

Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

man this one's a classic for a reason
Avatar 8:20pm TDK60:

love unusual bass sounds.
Avatar 8:21pm Little Danny:

Motorik's platonic ideal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm melinda:

So good.
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

@LD: truly
Avatar 8:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Somehow them calling themselves 'New' has never become ironic...
Avatar 8:23pm Little Danny:

@RR63: truly a transcendent project, Neu! Beyond reproach in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, what's Neu!?
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ken! imagining a cover of What's Neu! Püssykat that's 11 minutes long and has a perfect motorik beat
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

a Tom Jones Vocoder album
  8:29pm colin:

Great show, really enjoying it. Thanks Ken
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

Hi Colin
Avatar 8:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think of Cope calling Stereolab 'French Jazz' & Krautrock pretenders...tho' I am FrancoAmerican & love Jazz & Stereolab.
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

crucial use of mini-moog in a lot of Guelewar / Bai Janha stuff. really visceral sound
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

Bai Janha, nicknamed "Sweet Fingers" btw
Avatar 8:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If I were on a track with an ensemble this rhymically intricate but groovy & loose - I would think it a real high point of my life!
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So together but such an imminent recording.
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

I agree, they're so vivid and intense to listen to
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

vocals here by Ali Harb, I believe. Guitar by Banha
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

it might actually be Papa Touray on vocals. not super familiar with Ifang Bondi's lineup
Avatar 8:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

First exposure to any Vocal remotely comparable probably Hugh Masekala in Monterey Pop film sounding loud & angry but soulful - always blew my mind as a little kid.
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

This album is Bai Janha with a group of somewhat unpolished younger musicians, very loose and experimental session. I've seen a a few reviewers deride it's "amateurish" elements but I've always adored it. pulsing with vitality I say
Avatar 9:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah thx to whoever recorded these!
Avatar 9:04pm TDK60:

This is hopping along. I dig it.
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

i love this record so much... i'm loving it more with each minute, this evening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm chresti:

I love this kora.
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

following this kora solo, a massive super-amplified workout on likembe from Zaire
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: me too, it's so bloody elegant
Avatar 9:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Should listen to some African music every day. Be very healthy.
Avatar 9:11pm Little Danny:

This is great
Avatar 9:12pm Little Danny:

This too is great!
Avatar 9:13pm TDK60:

I see (saw) some kora guys playing on subway platforms; must be noisy to focus, but most have amps.
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

these guys from Zaire generally play for specific tribal events, such as mourning, etc. - depending on the prestige of the family involved, often for as long as a week at a time. truly endurance music. this track is a morning song - instrumental so as to give the singers a little time to rest after singing all night. this particular ensemble actually hails from Angola
Avatar 9:17pm Little Danny:

Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

crazy homemade amplifier set up, great blown-out guitar mic sound on the likembe, pushed through a wall of six speakers
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

love the cover of this cassette: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Aitch:

A lovely winter morning here in Sydney, enjoying the show as I work.
Avatar 9:20pm TDK60:

Well, this energetic orchestra obviously had their wheaties and vitamins.
Avatar 9:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm chresti:

Do they have khat in Zaire? Thats a good pick-me-up I hear.
Avatar 9:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Kicking out the jams, in other words.
  9:26pm Ike:

Very cool.
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

hi there Ike
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: i wonder what it's like to have a little khat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm WR:

Since khat has been mentioned a few times in last couple of days took a look at the wikipedia page for it. It is illegal in all forms in the USA but "In 1980, the WHO classified the plant as a drug of abuse that can produce mild to moderate psychological dependence (less than tobacco or alcohol)"
Avatar 9:31pm Frog Mover:

Damn this is hot!
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

orig. released by Ocora as a double cassette, which is the better version from the CD as far as I can tell, since the runtime for everything is longer
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

damn now that's a sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm WR:

Never have seen Ocora cassettes, met a guy in the late 70s who had many of their LPs.
Avatar 9:39pm Flash Strap:

they have so many releases, it's crazy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm chresti:

I forget who told me recently that you have to chew a lot of it to feel anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm WR:

Was curious about the sound, so put in headphones. Wondering if stereo and yes it was, presume it was typical quality equipment of its time, Nagra and a couple of good microphones. Sounded really good, will listen to it again with the headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm chresti:

..and have it with lime (not the fruit) like coca leave chewing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Flash, I saw Konono#1 play downtown L.A. a few years ago. I was pretty sick, but I went anyway, I mean they don't play around here everyday. I had a fever and I think that added to the experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm coelacanth∅:

hey y'all is the booze all gone?
... any music left?
Avatar 9:47pm Little Danny:

Massive show, Evan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm WR:

The wikipedia page has a lot of detail, no mention of needing something else to help release the active substance, "Its fresh leaves and tops are chewed or, less frequently, dried and consumed as tea, to achieve a state of euphoria and stimulation; it also has anorectic (appetite-reducing) side effects. The leaves or the soft part of the stem can be chewed with either chewing gum or fried peanuts to make it easier to chew. "
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

that's amazing, Franco!
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

it's feverish music for sure
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

Hi Coelacanth!
Avatar 9:52pm Little Danny:

Hope y'all can join me: wfmu.org... Thought I'd licked last week's video streaming issues but apparently it's still erroring out for some of ya. Will likely disable after 15 minutes or so if true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm coelacanth∅:

they're a few years away from figuring out how to profit from khat
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

thanks LD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm chresti:

That would be the lime, WR. Calcium carbonate.
Thanks Flash, and love Keith Hudson!
