Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

If you haven't had the change to hear Kim Sorise's Global Grease show on Monday evenings here on the Drummer Stream, I think you'll be blown away by her Dance party show this afternoon. She has been spinning killer dance jams on the air and in clubs for decades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am dutchtheo:

Ha, Brian in UK, i like the little thrill of anxiety when you get in, and if it is not collapsing...
Avatar 9:14am StringOFperils:

I'll underwrite the above. Kim's show is consistently excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

@duke

Ah the mellifluous sounds of DRC.
Avatar 9:27am StringOFperils:

An anti-hypertension song? Should I read that as a metaphor. Should this be followed by 'High Blood Pressure'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Andrew Waterloo:

Happy Friday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Andrew Waterloo:

This morning I grant myself a coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Andrew Waterloo:

If you want to lower your blood pressure just imagine Bob Ross doing Thai Chi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

So happy to see you, Gina Bacon! Welcome welcome, Andrew Waterloo!
  9:29am Jeff g. via app:

Well this is helping *my* hypertension.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am listener Rey:

Just hoping to bring some appiness, Jeff G.

All-day, listener Rey, hey-hey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Andrew Waterloo:

Yah.. fighting the hypertension myself.. some luck with that, surprising luck loosing weight though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Gina Bacon:

So happy to be here, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

@Andrew Waterloo
Bob Ross doing Thai Chi needs to have a warning label. "Do not do Thai Chi Bob Ross while operating heavy equipment or machinery, etc."
  9:36am KWilde:

Friday always a drummer day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jim the Poet:

I would listen to a math show but I wouldn't understand it

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am chresti:

I can't imagine a day without coffee.
Avatar 10:00am StringOFperils:

I'd choose that over the usual sleight-of-hand bull.
  10:00am Listener Gregory:

Doug, is that Melba Liston on the GIF? Sorry if you said already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

I love you, RLMA!

@Listener Gregory
I hadn't said, but yes indeed, that is Melba the Magnificent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Uncle Michael:

Good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am WR:

This work thing is getting in the way of me remembering that the real significance of Friday is connecting to the drummer stream. Hi all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

I can write you a note for work, WR. You had an appointment with Dr. Drummersome to address an acute cumbia deficiency.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

Hello dear Friday brother Uncle!
Avatar 10:08am hyde:

I found a Lisandro Mesa video from Discos Fuentes on Youtube. I think Lisandro Mesa was also el rey of buxom women
Avatar 10:11am StringOFperils:

Thank you for the tidbit of Ichiban information. I think I might be able to suss out what happened now, which I will keep to myself.
  10:11am Funky16Corners:

Thank you, Doug. And good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Maggie B.:

Thank you Doug. I really wasn't sure what to believe. Now I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Gina Bacon:

Thank you, Doug. ❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Irene Trudel:

@Doug, thank you for clarifying the Ichiban story. I am really saddened at the rumors flying around. I look forward to the day when we can all come together again.
Avatar 10:14am hyde:

hmmm, i somehow missed all of this kerfluffle
Avatar 10:16am Marc Francis:

  10:16am bigplanetnoise:

Ahhhh. Friday, strong coffee, and RadioDrumming! Good morning, all!!!
Avatar 10:16am Phillippe Bastille:

Damn, I had to cut down my listening and chatting for a couple weeks; had no idea anything was happening
Avatar 10:16am Brian in UK:

F16C, did everything go well for you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Doug and Drummer donors! This set will probably seem Sheena-esque.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Raging Love Machine Artie:

Thank you, Doug. It's been tearing me up hearing about Ichiban, and not knowing what had gone down. I dearly hope that something can be done to make the station whole again and get the Ichiban staff and listeners back in the fold.
  10:17am Funky16Corners:

@Brian, yes, thank you. A little tired and sore, but home enjoying Mr Schulkind and his program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am WR:

my 2¥

A. I respect that Debbie refrained from going fully public on the dispute.

B. Once the parties involved have had time to fully consider to the disagreement that full disclosure will be made.

C. The sounds and efforts of Ichiban are fully supported and recognized.

D. One listener's POV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Maggie B.:

@WR, she did go public, at least on facebook.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

So very happy to see you, Marc Francis! bigplanetnoise, yer a mensch! Webhamster Henry, it's a pleasure, Sir!
  10:19am Funky16Corners:

This eerily familiar tune makes me think of Bugs Bunny acting as a snake charmer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Webhamster Henry:

"Yes Sir!" was Ted Lewis' catchphrase, part of zillions of vaudeville parodies.
Avatar 10:20am Really Lisa:

Hello Doug and all. So glad for this stream. Has become my go-to for so many shows all week long <3
  10:21am goyim in the am:

It’s been gross watching the misuse of liberation language to settle a personal score. Black lives matter more than Rex’s old shows with the mic breaks cut out, that’s for sure. Hi folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Hopey Sockmonkey:

Good day, All.
  10:22am Listener Gregory:

Discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922 led to a world-wide interest in ancient Egypt. I wonder if these songs are part of that.
  10:22am bigplanetnoise:

Good morning, Really Lisa!
Avatar 10:23am Really Lisa:

Hi BPN :) Hope you're doing well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Irene Trudel:

Gotta go do somer actual work now, but will be lurking and listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

@WR
So so sadly, Debbie did not refrain from going fully public. She has been expressing fraudulently to her many fans that WFMU was resistant to making some kind of anti-racism statement. It is simply not true.
  10:23am norman douglas:

wow. you spent a lotta time not saying anything. very diplomatic. practically politico-grade. i love the music you play and your commentary is often extremely informative. that bit about ichiban was excruciating tho. i ain't mad atcha. just sayin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Gina Bacon:

Is that my friend Norman?
  10:24am Funky16Corners:

@ListenerGregory - I was always similarly intrigued by the proliferation of Hawaiian-themed songs in the teens and 20s. Just read a great book by Ian Whitcomb about the ukelele that explained it all
Avatar 10:25am hyde:

@Doug yikes
Avatar 10:25am Martinibomb:

Yay it's Doug! Hi Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, goyim in the am! Really Lisa! Hopey Sockmonkey!

norman douglas, email me and I will talk with you as long as you desire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

Hi there, Martinibomb!
Avatar 10:26am Martinibomb:

are those your bass guitars you posted show flyer today on your FB?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

There is no basis to the fact that those are my basses, Martinibomb.
  10:27am Funky16Corners:

I love Giuffre. He lives in that weird space of intellectual jazz, but he never forgot the value of a melody.
  10:28am Listener Gregory:

@Funky16--interesting.
Probably by 1953 that Tut discovery had worn off, though.
Avatar 10:28am Sem:

Good morning, Doug, Drummer Somebodies, and aspirants to that title.
This set complements my recent viewing of Ken Burn's JAZZ doc. Learned plenty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

@Funky16Corners
Still Giuffre ran deep.
Avatar 10:29am Martinibomb:

@doug I get what you're bassicly saying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Artie:

Ooh, it's like a Bolero that swings!
  10:31am Funky16Corners:

The live version of ‘The Train and the River’ with Bob Brookmeyer and Jim Hall from Jazz on a Summer’s Day is one of my favorite pieces of music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

What bolero doesn't swing, Artie? OK, maybe the Bo Derek one. But all the others!
  10:32am Funky16Corners:

I know it’s only Egypt-adjacent, but Palestina by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band would fit in here nicely.
  10:33am norman douglas:

hi gina yup tis i!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Gina Bacon:

Fancy meeting you here!
Avatar 10:33am Martinibomb:

Oh I just noticed the cat in that photo of the basses - lol shows you where my interest is
  10:33am Jeff g. via app:

Ok then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Artie:

Swings faster? With additional funk? Whatever it is, I dig it.

Two bucks for all the bits on that whole Cleopatra LP, here: canary-records.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 10:36am Cp304:

Morning peoples, good show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Jim the Poet:

There's a pattern forming here. I can't quite put my finger on it.
  10:36am Funky16Corners:

Read that as NIPPLES OF THE NILE...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

@norman douglas
I encourage you to reach out to me. I am happy to tell you everything I know.
  10:36am Listener Gregory:

Doug, if this is not an oboe, what is it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

Cp304, have you met C-3PO?!
  10:37am Dean:

There's "Bolero" and then there's "Baïlèro," as in the first of Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iI8tMHrD_c

Let's call the whole thing off?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

@Funky16Corners
I'm playing "Nipples on the Nile" over on my premium channel.
Avatar 10:40am holland oats:

great set (aren't they all)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 10:48am bobdc:

When I see who else has recorded Little Egypt at en.wikipedia.org... I'm pretty sure I've heard Elvis's version. I want to hear Cher's version like I want to look at a car wreck as I drive by it.
  10:48am Dean:

Hmm, my mom used to say "ying yang" to mean something not related at all to Egypt...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

Hoo-hah and welcome, marcury!
  10:51am Funky16Corners:

I think Cher sings it in ‘Mask’
  10:51am Dean:

What kinda scheme you running here, Doug?
  10:54am Listener Gregory:

Also, kindly note the existence of "Pyramid" by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington. Excellent song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

I could (and maybe should) do three hours of pyramid songs, LG. Don't tempt me.

You tempted me.
  10:55am Dean:

Next set: songs about Charles Ponzi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Webhamster Henry:

  11:09am Funky16Corners:

This is nice! Way further out than anything else I’ve heard by Nelson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Jeff Golick:

"Blues and the Abstract Truth" was an early, crucial signpost for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, solo mon! Take me to your leader!

@jeff dolphy's on that no? don't make me google
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Marie! Marie! Marie! Welcome!
Avatar 11:11am hyde:

@Jeff Golick me too! i took it out from the public library
  11:11am Listener Gregory:

Mosaic Records put out a good box set on his music some years back, for those interested in a deep dig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jeff Golick:

Dolphy, yes. Bill Evans. Freddie Hubbard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

And a really good gateway to the Impulse catalog in general.
Avatar 11:12am vanhooserd:

Nice to finally catch your show, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

And honor and delight to have you ride along, vanhooserd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Wait, whut? Where did the Eric Dolphy discussion come from. I want in!
  11:15am Funky16Corners:

His presence on Blues and the Abstract Truth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Andrew Waterloo:

oh crap.. all these meetings and I am missing some good stuff
  11:17am Marie:

Love this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Ow wow, what a document is Blues and the Abstract Truth! Back in 1980, I produced a radio piece for my college station covering the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Without conscious intention the intro and outro music I used for the piece was "Stolen Moments" from that LP. I've felt kinda dumb about it for 40 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

If you've got other obligations, you may want to hang on for at least one more track. Our next tune is by... The Hot Love Band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Raphe Malik and Glenn Spearman. Dearly loved. Dearly missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Andrew Waterloo:

This is soothing

yeessssssss
Avatar 11:23am Martinibomb:

this song goes places whoa
  11:24am Dean:

I can beat that, Doug. I did music for a high school stage production of Man for All Seasons. For one scene I used a then recently released faux-Renaissance progressive rock track, which wasn't so bad, but I also used an excerpt of a Telemann chamber work, which was hella anachronistic. To top it off, the cover of the Telemann LP, which I still have and continue to play, features a painting by Degas!?

Spearman's memorial took place in the funeral home behind my house. Before we moved in, alas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Was it a Day-Glo Degas, Dean?
  11:25am Listener Gregory:

Belatedly mentioning that Dolphy plays on a number of Oliver Nelson's small-group albums, which are underrated. IMHO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

LOL LOL Lol.

Yes indeed. I thought that someone was saying Dolphy was on the Oliver Nelson LP I opened this set with. I was prepared to apply the rod of correction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

This outrageously gorgeous number features Chris Briscoe on alto sax and the voice of Kate Westbrook.

Hi Doug! I’ve been listening on and off all morning and as usual enjoying the show. But Joe Bataan inspired me to say hello. I love him.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am joe:

@Doug I'm doing well thank you for asking. I've still been creeping around out here but for awhile there work caused getting on the board to be a conflict.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am joe:

That Joe Bataan song was how do you say very very sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

@wendy del formaggio
A couple friends of mine concocted this crazy idea to have Joe Bataan perform at their little wedding. Somehow they found his number—and he did it! A complete mensch!
Avatar 11:53am duke:

Thanks for the show Sir Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

Well I always so glad to see you, joe! So glad to see you all joining in and hanging out. We need to stick together, friends.
  11:55am wendy del formaggio:

@Doug: That makes me love Joe Bataan even more. Such a mensch, indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am joe:

Joe walked in to the Record Fair one year. I always tried to be a good boy while there and not take advantage with my time behind the table to meet people but that one knowing it was a likely hood I would never run into him again I had to say hello and express my appreciation for his work. He was very very kind man
