This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

If you like cumbia, check out "I'm no longer here". It centers on a bunch of teenagers into cumbia rebejada in Monterrey, Mexico. It starts when the Zetas make shit hit the fan, making Monterrey going from the safest to the most dangerous city for three years (2011). It also takes place in Elmhurst, Quenens. As mentioned beforehand, I have a personal connection to Mty. The sndrk is awesome, and I found most of the tracks there crate dgging in the barrio where it was filmed (it's on Netflix)>

Okay I must have been thinking ukuleles and Don Ho???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm
StringOFperils:

@CC > > Athens/Pireus is a pretty centre of the world international port in the Mediterranean world, not quite Istanbul but close. A lot of Jews have moved through there and brought culture with them. So, once again, likely that there is shared melody etc. These musics are brewed out of all kinds of stuff. Also Arabic music. It was all caliphate at one time.

CC:

I know SOP...I feel like I have an ear for it?!?
Avatar 9:10pm
Flash Strap:

this is such a cool record as well, would love to have lyric translations as they seem VERY interesting
  9:11pm
Dean:

Do you not have the 28-page insert?
  9:11pm
CC:

The chord changes really move my soul!!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
doctorjazz:

Not familiar with Mississippi Records, just checked, they have quite an interesting catalog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
StringOFperils:

Most of them I think ran to, "Oh I'm so unhappy now, I am sitting in a cloud of hash, and I can't see any up for down, etc.." The rembetika records are like Greek blues records out of one specific sub-culture.
  9:13pm
Dean:

Check your email, FS.
Avatar 9:13pm
TDK60:

I saw a Greek movie that shows that pre-WWII scene; as I recall, it's just called Rembetiko.
Avatar 9:14pm
Flash Strap:

@SoP: I'm curious because Kostis is supposed to be a bit unique or idiosyncratic among his peers so i'd love to know in what lyrical ways that manifests; he was an author & poet
Avatar 9:15pm
Flash Strap:

@dean: no i just have the digital, i hate how those don't come w/ insert
Avatar 9:15pm
Flash Strap:

ah thanks Dean!
  9:15pm
Dean:

Hmm, mine came with the booklet. I forwarded to you.
Avatar 9:15pm
TDK60:

..and also takes place during WWII. Those rembetiko musicians trying to avoid the Nazis.
Avatar 9:17pm
Flash Strap:

wow this is excellent, thanks Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
StringOFperils:

Most of the rembetika records I've heard seem like real stand-out stuff, fo the stuff that's survived I guess (not that I'm an expert), so some unique talents were involved, no doubt Like blues, the material is simple on the surface of it, and often recycled, but it's what you do with it
  9:17pm
Dean:

You're welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
StringOFperils:

These original calypsos are so great. The original hip-hop
Avatar 9:20pm
Flash Strap:

I really think Calypso may be the superlative expression of the lyric, period
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
chresti:

This is so great.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
Little Danny:

This is fantastic! Nice jazzy breaks, too.
  9:22pm
CC:

Very NSYNC with reggae type stuff!!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
doctorjazz:

OK, looks like I need to dive into the Mississippi catalog...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
doctorjazz:

Love this old Calypso!
  9:23pm
Dean:

They're lovely productions, doctorjazz.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Little Danny:

Gah the grimy guitar sound on this Lord Panama is so good
Avatar 9:24pm
Flash Strap:

Panamanian calypso is really underrated, Lord Cobra alone makes this true
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
WR:

Have been working so can't keep up with the comments but program tonight is hitting all expectations and beyond.
Avatar 9:24pm
Flash Strap:

@LD: i know, great guitar sound
Avatar 9:25pm
Flash Strap:

Spanish section is pure fire, holllly shit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
StringOFperils:

There's an oil-drum lid in the guitarist's amp instead of a speaker.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Little Danny:

Oh wow, thanks S.O.P.! It really did have a wonderful metallic tone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
StringOFperils:

Ha ha ha.
Avatar 9:28pm
TDK60:

Santana influence or vice versa?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
StringOFperils:

This show is blowing my mind. Great musical trip.
Avatar 9:28pm
Flash Strap:

were you in fact speaking figuratively SoP?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
StringOFperils:

I think I was speaking facetiously, but it did sound like a blown out resonator of some kind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

I've been asleep, so I dropped out for awhile which seems to be what happens every time I sit down lately. But a Syrian spinach pie and some hot coffee should have me up and dancing real soon.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Little Danny:

Please tell me you weren't kidding SoP. I want so much for the oil can lid amp to be real.
Avatar 9:30pm
Flash Strap:

Santana's influence was so huge on S. American guitar music, it's probably that way around but I always think his influence is a lot more interesting than his actual work
  9:30pm
CC:

Oh yes..!.. there is so much more here than meets the eye!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Franco Twinkie:

Mon Ami!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Little Danny:

There's no reason why such a thing wouldn't be possible, right? It would just take oodles of electricity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
StringOFperils:

I know Danny! I hate to break it to you..but...that was some total b******t that I made up. I feel bad now.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
StringOFperils:

Ha ha ha. Oh man.
Avatar 9:32pm
Flash Strap:

hahah i love this - as a very trusting person who has a huge hunger for music knowledge i have been Danny in this exchange 1 million times
Avatar 9:33pm
Frog Mover:

@Flash nice Santana dig! Prob told you my dad gave him a ride in his cab once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
StringOFperils:

I'm sure I've embraced some disinformation from time to time, especially before the internet of music data was available.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Little Danny:

One of the deepest exotica heads I know is a huge Santana fan
Avatar 9:35pm
Flash Strap:

i don't mean to dig on him too much, i just notice his influence in like 1000 international recordings that i love and can't sit through a whole side of a single record he's done, i guess its a personal problem
  9:35pm
CC:

When I lived in Brentwood California we went grocery shopping one day and saw Karl Malden there was no mistaking him because of his nose!!!
Avatar 9:35pm
still b/p:

In my dream last night I wryly referred to an Anglo guy as "my Cuban connection." He was in a white suit and a narrow-brimmed straw hat -- whattayacallit, a straw porkpie-trilby thing. But why Cuba..? He coulda been my Panama or Trinidad connection.
Avatar 9:35pm
Flash Strap:

cool dad story tho Frog Mo
Avatar 9:36pm
Flash Strap:

Hi B/P _ Our Man in Havana, so to speak?
Avatar 9:36pm
Frog Mover:

@Flash perfect amount of dig in my opinion
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Little Danny:

I'm pretty much with you there Flash
Avatar 9:38pm
Flash Strap:

maybe it's from being still fairly young during the heyday of "Smooth", tho I like to think i'm more sophisticated than to hold that sort of grudge. i think i just don't like the production or songwriting; the musicianship is great
Avatar 9:39pm
Flash Strap:

also i should say he has the best section of the woodstock movie
Avatar 9:39pm
Frog Mover:

He was the big new acid discovery of Woodstock
Avatar 9:40pm
Flash Strap:

it's mostly due to the boy-drummer though tbh
Avatar 9:41pm
Flash Strap:

I've previously played a version of Exploiting by Lord MacBeth w/ alan Lomax presenting. not sure who wrote it though
Avatar 9:42pm
Frog Mover:

Saw somewhere someone beheaded a Columbus statue recently. So cool!
  9:43pm
CC:

He's got a damn fine collection of jazz records!!!
Avatar 9:44pm
TDK60:

Flash, I love the early Santana albums up till round '76. It's okay, as I've heard people have different tastes.
Avatar 9:44pm
Flash Strap:

The North End in Boston, I know it well. a good play of technical iconoclasm. salute to the behedaers
Avatar 9:45pm
Flash Strap:

@TDK: respect to your good taste - I envy your ability to dig it, honestly
Avatar 9:45pm
Flash Strap:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
WR:

This calypso collection is name your price on Mississippi bandcamp. On the list for the next free artist fee day at start of July.
  9:46pm
Dean:

Puzzles me that I never picked up Santana's triple LP live album, Lotus. I grew up with the first two or three LPs. Still solid to this day.
Avatar 9:46pm
TDK60:

Don't worry Flash, as I suspect there's plenty of other music around to peruse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

CC, I worked on a magazine ad for Canon copiers IN Brentwood. Karl Malden was the celebrity enlisted to make a copy!
  9:47pm
Dean:

Gonna recycle a joke I told a few months ago...

Ever notice how all the Xerox office buildings look the same?
Avatar 9:48pm
Flash Strap:

this music is so fresh to my ears, really makes me smile with discovery and delight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
