Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Handy Haversack:

Hello, Mary Wing! Hi, 100 Percent Wingnuts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Good Morning(-ish), Mary!
Avatar 12:02pm Mary Wing:

Hi Handy and S&M&S! I was listening to Ken's show and now all I want is a PEPSI
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Handy Haversack:

I think we can all agree it's the choice of a new generation.
Avatar 12:05pm Mary Wing:

Heh. I'm trying to remember the C&C cola commercials, did they do blind taste tests of the 3 colas?
Avatar 12:07pm Mary Wing:

C&C cola was the choice in my home when I was a child, heh. And they had lots of other flavors as well. I remember we bought large, flat cases of mixed flavors from a wholesale place in the neighborhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Handy Haversack:

I was in Atlanta growing up -- we called everything Coke. "I'll have a Coke." "What kind of Coke you want, honey?" "Sprite."
Avatar 12:09pm Mary Wing:

Heh heh heh! I had relatives in a part of North Carolina who called all soda "drank" (say it in a southern accent).
12:10pm chresti @griffith Park parking lot:

Hi Mary and wingdingers! Very hot and buggy today!
12:11pm chresti @griffith Park parking lot:

Pepsi generation, here.
Avatar 12:12pm Hubig Pie:

Diet Rite or die
Avatar 12:12pm Mary Wing:

Good morning chresti! Hot and probably buggy here too!
Avatar 12:13pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Hubig! Ah, the RC cola interloper, attempting to claim the throne. Are they still around?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, chresti! Was just thinking 100 Percent wouldn't feel quite complete with you back at work.

Hot enough out here. We have made a big batch of garlic and pepper tea we are going to spray around to discourage bugs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Mary, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too?
Avatar 12:15pm Hubig Pie:

I think they have been overthrown
Avatar 12:17pm Mary Wing:

Never liked Dr. Pepper, but I think i can still sing the jingle, heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy
Avatar 12:20pm Mary Wing:

Hey there, Phillippe! What's for lunch?
  12:21pm Really Lisa:

Hi Mary and everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Handy Haversack:

Phillippe!
  12:21pm P-90:

On those C+C Cola three-way taste test commercials they’d play the game of “bleeping” the names “Coke” and “Pepsi” with a honking horn sound, as if they weren’t allowed to mention them by name. Then at the very end the girl in the ad would yell “COKE AND PEPSI” real fast and the honking sounds would come in late, just as the commercial ended. Another Comments Board-inspired pop-culture flashback...
Avatar 12:23pm Mary Wing:

Howdy Lisa! And P-90! Long time, no see!

Yes, remember those honks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Carmichael:

Do they still make RC Cola?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Mary leftovers unfortunately...

Hey Handy!
Avatar 12:26pm Mary Wing:

Since I started doing these pre-recorded shows, whenever I'm typing up the playlist in real time, I'm constantly thinking "hey, I already played this song, why am I playing it again??"
I also forgot that I was going to bring the face-melting jams this early in the program, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm brainiac:

All I wanted was a Pepsi and she wouldn't give it to me!

Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system. Hi everyone.
Avatar 12:28pm Mary Wing:

Hi Carmichael and brainiac! I think RC cola is available in certain parts of the country, but I don't see it here in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Handy Haversack:

I forget to think about what it must be like to be on the West Coast and have Ken's show as your early-morning soundtrack!

Just luncheoned on cheese, olives, and Marcel-inspired pa amb tomatjes.
Avatar 12:33pm Mary Wing:

Green or black olives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm brainiac:

Hi Handy. Yeah, I have to listen to Ken after the fact. I just sit in hopeful anticipation for the goat alarm to go off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Phillippe Bastille:

An RC Cola and a Moon Pie...
  12:36pm JakeGould:

@Handy: What about listeners in Australia who listen to “Wake and Bake” as an evening (late night?) show?

Anyway… Hey Mary!
Avatar 12:37pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Jake!

This is a very quiet ending, don't raise your volume...
  12:37pm JakeGould:

@MaryWing: The way brand distribution works in NYC is not the same anymore. I miss truly genric small grocery brands. Like just good old “White Rose.” I don’t think “Krasdale” has a soda line?
Avatar 12:39pm Mary Wing:

And Ann Page, the other A&P brand, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Handy Haversack:

I can't remember seeing Krasdale soda, no. But there's a seltzer brand I can't remember seeing anywhere outside the city.

@Mary: Black olives (Kalamata even!).
  12:46pm JakeGould:

I think part of the reason nobody sees discount brand sodas in NYC anymore is overall ethnic diversity in NYC. So I have a variety of sodas available to me thanks to being in a predominantly Arab neighborhood. But I don’t drunk much soda anymore… But it would be nice to have flavors other than “the usual”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi 100% ers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm brainiac:

Henry!
Avatar 12:47pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Henry! Warm upstate yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Handy I love olive oil but hate olives. Weird, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Webhamster Henry:

@mary oh yeah - I could go for a Pequot ginger ale right now. Or a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda.
Avatar 12:49pm Mary Wing:

Jake, I'm thankful I can find the occasional Mexican Coke, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Webhamster Henry:

I usually get Reed's Extra Strength Ginger Brew though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Webhamster Henry:

Our stores stock all the Jarritos sodas. I like Tamarind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Webhamster Henry:

I haven't had a cola-based soda for years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Webhamster Henry:

Carl Sagan: special guest on "Billions".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm brainiac:

Love the way Sagan pronounced "Yooman"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Carmichael:

And a member of MJ-12!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm brainiac:

He was a gangster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Handy Haversack:

We usually manage to find Mexican Squirt in PA when we drive to and from MI. There used to be a Mexican grocery around the corner that stocked it. Pretty much that and seltzer (with booze) is the extent of my soda consumption.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Ken From Hyde Park:

There must be a Pepsi somewhere on this pixel! apod.nasa.gov...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm brainiac:

Oh, sorry Carmichael. Thought you said MS-13
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Webhamster Henry:

I remember seeing the Apollo 8 flight, the one that just went around the moon to see if they could come back. The Xmas Earthrise was pretty hopeful in 1968.
Avatar 1:02pm Mary Wing:

Hey there, Ken! Was getting a Coke and some Pop-tarts for my post-lunch snack, heh.
Avatar 1:07pm Hubig Pie:

Ooo... this is a good one
Avatar 1:08pm david w:

Now I'm thirsty... hello, Mary and all!
Avatar 1:10pm Mary Wing:

Hi David!! How do you handle the ambient noises in your apartment when you record your show? I bet you have an isolation booth... ;-)
Avatar 1:15pm Hubig Pie:

Those special notes only Mr. Sanders can play
  1:16pm JakeGould:

@MaryWing: Arabic Pepsi comes in small bottles and has less sugar. Also, Uludağ Gazoz is a Turkish soda that has exactly two flavors: Orange and “clear” which is citrusy. Like $1 a bottle and even cheaper in bulk.
Avatar 1:20pm Mary Wing:

"Citrusy" should be used for perfume scents and not for soda, if you ask me, heh. What makes it citrusy if it's not predominantly orange flavored?
Avatar 1:22pm Sem:

Coming in on a ding and a prayer.
Hail, Mary, and WHATEVER! to the 100% on hand, and others of some ilk else.
  1:22pm JakeGould:

@Mary: I’m not Turkish so I cannot explain what the real difference is. I just know it’s cheap and readily available. Sometimes the stores here get a seemingly random shipment of “Smarties” (the British M&Ms) so I accept and adapt.
Avatar 1:23pm david w:

Hey, Mary. It's pretty quiet here, but I basically don't care about odd noises, and a nice background bed helps too.
Avatar 1:24pm Mary Wing:

Hello Sem! I picture you with giant praying hands on a flying carpet, heh.
Avatar 1:25pm Sem:

You gotta a drone watching me? So close to the truth it is uncanny.
Avatar 1:26pm Mary Wing:

The beret makes you easy to spot in the sky by the drones, Sem.
Avatar 1:27pm Hubig Pie:

Gazoza was the name of a lemon lime soda I used to drink when stationed on Crete circa '81
Avatar 1:27pm Sem:

Fish gotta swim, mans gotta beret.
Avatar 1:28pm Mary Wing:

Gazoza also is my favorite Led Zep album, heh.
Avatar 1:29pm Mary Wing:

Followed closely by "Horses Of The Holy"
Avatar 1:30pm david w:

Topo Chico. Just sayin'. Also, great label.
  1:31pm JakeGould:

@Handy: Oh, in other non-hip Brooklyn news, last week during the curfew some racist a-hole posted tons of anti-Chinese flyers around the neighborhood. I almost think that was done not to be anti-Chinese as much as being a sabotage effort for the “Black Lives Matter” protests that happen out here.

The weird thing is I discovered it by seeing three distinct types of flyers: One bunch from a neighborhood person welcoming all people to the neighborhood, another bunch of generic NYC “hate crime is wrong” flyers and the third bunch were from the Guardian Angels. They are making strong efforts to recruit within the Chinese community out here.
Avatar 1:32pm Mary Wing:

Wow, the Guardian Angels are still a thing here?
  1:33pm JakeGould:

@Mary: Have a pair of Curtis Sliwa business cards they slip above the ads on subways. And they post flyers looking for info on creeps who flash their hoo-has on the subway. I really live in early 1990s NYC here in Bay Ridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Handy Haversack:

@Jake: I saw an article and some pix about those flyers and the response -- but not the Guardian Angels part!
  1:43pm Anonymous 7:

Mary seeing Sem’s beret is why I’m anonymous. Until Mark Hurst vanquishes Mary’s spying powers in the conclusive apocalyptic DJ battle, none of us are safe! /s

Yet the quite good music inexorably reels me in.
  1:45pm JakeGould:

@Handy: Well there you go. And as far as my cynicism of the city to actually investigate it, I know the exact location of the first flyer that was spotted and reported. It is at an intersection where there is one of those NYPD camera array things literally across the street and one other around the corner and right nearby is a business where the sons owner has talked openly about how “unfair” it is that Neo-Nazis can’t march in Germany.

So yeah, I am sure there is a manilla folder withs one flyers and notes in them. But sadly despite all the surveillance I don't think the person who posted that stuff will be “found” and it will just fade into yesterday’s news.

That’s why my own tact is to just take a pic for my own records and tear them down. Not a vigilante but don’t trust the gears of justice for stuff like this.
Avatar 1:47pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Anonymous 7! I applaud your stealth, as long as it prevents you from being a troll or e-asshole. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Handy Haversack:

@Jake, do you have any idea whether the Google LinkNYC spy towers' displaying the names of those killed by the police was an intentional "pacifying" action from the city/Google? Or a hack? Noticed it while marching.
  1:54pm JakeGould:

No clue. I assume intentional or else it would have been reported as a hack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Michael 98145:

Cool Bowie cover! Hi folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Handy Haversack:

Gotta fill the bird feeder again. I hoped the end of breeding season would ease the sparrows' apetite, but alas, their rapaciousness knows no statiety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Webhamster Henry:

I just watched Seu Jorge in the "Making of Black Orpheus" documentary (Criterion). All these Bowie covers are great, Bowie himself really liked them.
  2:02pm JakeGould:

Sparrows are great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Michael 98145:

Hi doctorjazz, just in time for 3oak!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Michael 98145:

oh, boy - Pixies
always a favorite
Avatar 2:11pm Roberto:

That's why it's my fave Pixies tune -- kind of poppy but still a tad edgy.
Avatar 2:13pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Roberto! Yeah, not super poppy but poppy enough to get your head bopping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Handy Haversack:

I have been spending a LOT of time with the sparrows. Very fun birds.

I managed to make my brain not let new Pixies ruin old Pixies. Got into the show in Atlanta on the Doolittle tour when they were still playing small places. Two? years later they were opening for U2 at the basketball arena.
Avatar 2:16pm Mary Wing:

Did you watch the Pixies documentary, Handy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm brainiac:

That Kate Rogers version was funky but chic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Handy Haversack:

No -- I didn't even hear about it, Mary!

I did catch them at the Hammersmith, what, ten years back? That was a good show. And afew more times in HS, but nothing beat that show at the Roxy -- I think I'd listened to the tape once and just figured I'd get in somehow, and we were right up against the stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Handy Haversack:

(There are now already at least 20 sparrows back here.)
Avatar 2:24pm Roberto:

There's a great comment on YouTube regarding the official video for this song:
