"There's a difference between glorifying drug use and saying that drugs had a profound effect in one's life." I disagree. I am not knocking the Dead or Garcia. i find it ridiculous to say that they did not glorify drugs. they embraced their being identified with LSD. it made their career.

@Jake, where did you grow up? I'm a Jersey boy c. mid-70s and drugs were everywhere. There was a lot of high-quality LSD at my high school, and as the father of two high school boys, I shudder to think about them taking hallucinogens. Gotcha, @Joe. To me Garcia was a fascinating, deeply flawed person who never wanted to be sanctified or to be the main element driving the colossus that the Dead became. Ultimately like any hard drug user, he didn't care what anybody thought.

@Jake: I grew up in Brooklyn. Brighton Beach in particular. Was a kid in the 1970s and there was this one area of the beach — near Manhattan Beach — we nicknamed “Bay Zero” (instead of Bay 1,2,3 etc…) and it was filled with burnouts. Just kids (mostly kids from Jewish backgrounds) who would just sit there and zonk out all the time.

But by my teens, I heard that people from “the City” came out to Brighton Beach not just for the knishes and such but also for good, cheap heroin.

@Hugie: Well, think secular Jews. I mean the whole East Village scene was there thanks to Jews.

If you want to laugh, in 2001 I got a new job doing work for a magazine owned by a very rich and very, very old school Upper East Side guy.

So we have the annual holiday party at his home on the Upper East Side. I’m nervous but soaking it all in: The guy was (passed away) rich but the apartment itself was a typical NYC book hoarder kinda place.

So I am schmoozing with co-workers and mention I grew up in NY and say “Brighton Beach” and this person’s eyes bug out and says “Wait here!” and they run off…

They bring back some guy and introduces me and says, “He grew up in Brighton Beach!” and he starts complimenting the neighborhood and then he starts gushing about how he and some friends rented out a house for a month to just sit around in and do heroin in and how the landlord and the neighborhood was so wonderful.

Well, thanks buddy! Happy my childhood neighborhood was a great place for you and your friends to do rich kid slumming smack in.

OK, I know this topic has been exhausted - but just to clarify that his cause of death was a heart attack. He did not die of an overdose. He was in a drug clinic and clean. Garcia’s weight problems, sleep apnea, heavy smoking, and diabetes is really what contributed to his physical decline.
