  3:24pm David in London:

Blimey, everyone’s here today - Handy, spodiodi, brainiac, Earth Walker, Carmichael, Rev, Bringer of Crud. The amusing thing for me is how my text auto fill now completes everyone’s name after the first letter. C is an exciting cliffhanger though, ‘Will he go C...a or will he go C...r...?’ (Or even C....o if Coelacanth is around).
Avatar 3:25pm Hubig Pie:

Hi Handy! Work was a bit hectic, lots of people asking questions, I walked around a lot, reminding players that they couldn't play doubles, had to pay online, couldn't hang out on the patio...had to kick people out who refused to pay online, etc. By the end of the shift, I'd sometimes loose it and tell them the whole operation would get shut down again if they refused to comply, etc. (that seemed to straighten them up)
Avatar 3:29pm Hubig Pie:

Don't forget to wear your brain bucket, Hubig, lest you come back sans brain.
Avatar 🎸 3:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I was living in tucson in '97 and there was a list going around of all these radio stations around the world with "webcasts" -- it was quite an exotic thing, I guess.

I was digging into all these obscure north African stations & in the middle of the list was FMU...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm geo in jc:

Hey Fabio. I enjoyed soldiering through many of those late 80’s shows. Still listening.

Happy Birthday Nick!
  3:52pm David in London:

STF was my gateway to FMU when I first heard it on a visit to NYC in 1996. It was aggravating not being able to listen to it back in England. I was so excited when the download podcast era started. Still got plenty of episodes from the Noughties on my old and thankfully still functional iPod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Crudbringer:

I was listening in the late-90s/early aughts, turned on by my friend that moved to BK. Then I fell away for a while. Music of Mind Control is really what brought me back, and now I'm hear for all of it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, Fabio and giant people. For those about to fail, we salute you!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:58pm brainiac:

I'll give up my iPod when they pry it from my cold, dead hand.
1984 was the year I was introduced to FMU.
Avatar 🎸 3:59pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

For me the icebreaker was Tony Coulter when I discovered it; the time-zone thing worked out perfectly in AZ. I remember being fascinated by his back-announcing happening over a bed of (i think) the sound of light traffic. Ambient car noises.

And that was Ten Million Years Ago. Weird.
  4:03pm Fragonard:

Fabio, you should chAnge the name of your show to The Best Show Ever
Avatar 4:03pm Megadano:

In college (90s) when I was home for the holidays, I would record FMU on as many cassettes as I could. then in my college town a venue had a door man from nyc who loved FMU and i wouldn't have to pay a cover if i gave him cassettes of FMU. haha.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Handy Haversack:

We listened in college 1993-1997. FMU, FDU, BAI. Then I left town for a while. It was in our regular radio rotation then for years after like 2005 but only the past three years did I process what the internet had meant for it. They never did breed Haversacks for their smarts.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm jmr3:

I think I heard WFMU driving through NJ from Vermont to FL. Heard someone cutting up moon mission audio with some of the argument scenes from 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?'
Later, 97? 98? I discovered Fabio, Kenny G, and Diane Kamikaze online and surreptitiously listened at work. Sometimes I'd record through my RealPlayer at home and connect my mp3 player to the cassette adapter in my car.

first started listening in 1977 -- my first year in college
and ever since, WFMU has been this amazing presence/anchor in my life, but especially now, when, at best, we are all isolated (& i am hardly this social, extroverted person!) and at worst, stuck in dangerous situations (when the "shelter in place" protocols first hit, my first thoughts went to those in abusive situations, homeless people, those in jails, group homes, etc.) . . . again, grateful for this oasis of sanity in insane, unsure times . . .

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well, I like the original (Baruch) Spinoza, so I should totally try out Shirley and Spinoza! Will look into it...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Ike:

Dave Mandl, FM airwaves, Saturday early afternoons, circa late 1993-94.
Avatar 🎸 5:01pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Shirley & Spinoza was another great one. That link used to be on the old iTunes radio list, but thought it must have died a while back?
Avatar 🎸 5:01pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

ah, missed Braniac's comment earlier. Yes. That.

@Stanley: What's yours tonight? I'm splashing out on a slow Laphroaig 17 years..
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Handy Haversack:

Just opened some cold wine. It's muggy out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Stanley:

@Bas - Ben Riach 12 yo sherry cask.
You like a bit of the ol' smoke then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

1,906 stream on my iTunes playlist (current or otherwise)
...1,907 - Cheers !
Avatar 🎸 5:06pm Bas NL:

Oww! Never had Ben Riach. And yes, it's mostly peaty heaven in my cupboard. ;)

BTW: Stanley, I spent the past two days prepping a manuscript for editing -- it's about the search for terroir in whisk(e)y. Will make sure you know the relevant details when it's out. There's a guide to setting up flights for tasting as an appendix!

My friend in Edinburgh is going to edit it, and I'm supervising the production -- I did not write it, to be clear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& I generally stream FMU or listen to Podcasts...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:07pm brainiac:

oops, didn't see you up there ParUbi. Enjoy that stream in good health.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Stanley:

Handy that sound very interesting.
Are you the author?
Avatar 🎸 5:08pm TDK60:

Hello. Just back from a rare walk.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Handy Haversack:

Heh, no, Stanley. Merely a cog in the machine.
  5:09pm watchpocket:

"The Minotaur" was what Keith Emerson ripped off for "Lucky Man." (Though not sure if it's coming from Fabio HQ or station HQ. The signal dropouts today are VERY unusual for STF. Don't complain folks, the show's very text and subtext is . . . FAILURE. STRENGTH WILL ULTIMATELY COME OF IT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thot it very Keith yeah.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Ike:

Hey board op, which Terry Riley piece were you using there earlier?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Matt Warwick:

@Ike a Rainbow in Curved air
Avatar 5:14pm Itzall Hear:

watchpocket, that's very well put, and I agree that it IS very unusual for this show to drop so often. I thought maybe it was on my end, you've confirmed that it is not.
Avatar 🎸 5:14pm TDK60:

Matt, I loaned a fella my Rainbow in Curved Air album once. I had to go to his place to get it back. He asked if I'd sell it. Nope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Stanley:

Handy - Terroir is a big thing for whisk(e)y. I recently came accross a single malt from a distillery in Goa, India. A bottle was retailing for £300+. I wonder what the author would think of that 'terroir'. I would love to hear more about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Matt Warwick:

Going to run to the library to get some JAZZ
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm ParUbi:

I've heard about that Jazz music. How could they just make up all those notes? Sounds exhausting!
  5:19pm WM:

Thanks for the Globe Unity Orchestra - probably the best of the free jazz inspired European groups.
Avatar 🎸 5:20pm TDK60:

Hey Handy. You're an editor?
  5:20pm watchpocket:

Raise a glass to board op Matt since we can't always tell when the dropouts occur. It's like a dream sequence, or a good mash-up mix. Now you see Fabio, now you don't, & here he is again.
Avatar 5:21pm Itzall Hear:

@ParUbi- it's not hard when you are an EXPERT. It's ALL they do, all the time. Seems impossible but true.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:21pm chris:

came in to say what watchpocket just said. and saw whisky terroir being discussed.. oooooo. i would guess a whisky terroir would be about grains, water and yeast. am i wrong?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Handy Haversack:

@watchpocket: yeah! Well said. Fabio, Matt, happy to be here to fail alongside such excellent people. No place else I'd rather be!

@TDK60: Yup. In scholarly publishing.
Avatar 🎸 5:22pm Bas NL:

I had an Amrut Indian whisky recently on a tasting.. It was really good! They age quickly in the heat, so with only 3-4 years they taste very mature.

Failure is a many-splendo(ü)red thing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Handy Haversack:

@chris: seems like grain especially, but one article cited had an awesome title. Something like "You Think You're 'Craft'? Make Your Own Yeast!"!
  5:25pm egould310:

Sounds like he’s giving that saxophone “eagle-bird kisses”.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:26pm chris:

thanks, Handy. first mash i did here at the homestead began fermenting before i even added yeast. both, yikes! and hmm, cool! didn't taste great distilled, though. such is the outcome for new distillers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Stanley:

@Bas - interesting. the bottle I saw was only a 5 yo and I thought, not enough time. But would love to try.
@chris - it's a bit more than that. For instance I've got my eyes on a bottle of Old Pulteney. The distillery is right on the coast and, not surprisingly, the sea air imparts a feint salty flavour to the spirit.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Handy Haversack:

Any bathtub you can walk away from, chris!

I miss brewing beer a lot. We were toying with the idea of distilling when my buddy who had the apartment where such things could be possible moved away.

@Handy, I used to do paste-up for a scholarly publication, in the early 80s.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:30pm chris:

nice, Stanley! so much fun (and expense) to the whisky experience.
indeed, Handy. running the still scared the hell out of everyone who wasn't involved, so the project came to a close. sad face.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Handy Haversack:

@chresti: paste-up! Excellent. Not a lot of book designers still know the term, I think!
  5:33pm David in London:

A few years back my missus bought me a ‘whisky weekend’ at the London Whisky School for my birthday. Although getting the first dram down at 10am was a challenge, it was a truly great weekend. As part of it, we had to blend and devise a marketing campaign for our own whisky. We made The GlenHackney’ and it went down very well with the class. Sadly, being a small batch run it has long since sold out. I still have an empty bottle or two though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Stanley:

Haha that's a great story, David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm spodiodi:

yeah, cheers, David -- to your missus
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm chris:

she's a keeper, David! i'd really enjoy that, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Handy Haversack:

That's awesome, David!. Ha!

I realized that this blind spot in my ice box is actually a now-like seven-year-old champagne bottle of imperial stout we brewed. I think Kate and I might finally see how it's held up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm brainiac:

My first job in Brooklyn was paste-up for a community paper. My boss was a rageaholic and threw a tape dispenser through a light table. I quit soon thereafter.

I'm a bit disappointed, Fabio... I think Skypilot is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. But I'll keep tuning in...
Avatar 5:38pm Itzall Hear:

I'm really enjoying the ramshackle aspect of today's program, but does it seem like this "Sorry...no playlist" guy is really hogging the show?!?
  5:39pm WM:

... after all, you did just play a set containing Ornette Coleman, Noah Howard and Byard Lancaster.
  5:39pm David in London:

Brainiac, he sounds like Chris Morris as Denholm Reynholm in The IT Crowd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Stanley:

@Bas - I visited the Laphroaig distillery a few years back and the 'gimmick' they had was if you bought a bottle at the end of the tour you got a certificate granting you (apparantly legal) ownerhip of one square foot of peat bog on the island, complete with map to indicate where it was situated. The deal was that the distillery rented it back from you and would pay one dram a year for this. Only thing was that you had to turn up in person to collect your annual 'rent'.
