There's a little restaurant / bar near me, way outside of town. It is very well known and trendy now, but for a long time prior to GPS it was impossible to find, and way back it was a brothel apparently. Anyway, there used to be a picture in the bar area of young bob dylan at the same bar talking to joan baez (I think). Sadly, a few years back they moved the picture somewhere else in the establishment.

Unfortunately I had a visitor for the first half of tonight's AG. But I was at that Asbury Park JGB 1980 show I believe 'Tangled Up In Blue' was the encore. It was rippin', and to show you how green we were at the time as 20 year olds, we all walked out saying: Did you hear that new song Jerry wrote, "Tangled Up In Blues?" ;) Duh.

Looking forward to your Archive already, Jeff. Incredible playlist!

I saw Bob at that last run of shows at the Beacon and the way he did this song (Girl From the North Country) just slayed me. Mr. Pumpy:

If'n ya dig H&O, might wanna check out Robert Fripp's Exposure LP (1979). It heavily feature Daryl Hall as lead vocalist and it is amazing. Fripp wanted him to sing for King Crimson but settled for this. Beware...Brian Eno is on it!

JakeGould:

Don’t focus on hip hop: Pitchfork’s writing is geared straight towards publicists of all genres.

I mean Pitchfork dumping on an Eno pop album, I might get… But dumping on an ambient record that is more Roger Eno than Brian Eno is some new level of “Okay, let’s take the wind out their sails…” nonsense.

I mean who will actually buy and listen to a new Brian Eno ambient album?

phat:

oddly enough the one time I saw Dylan GE Smith, of Hall & Oates's band was playing guitar!

I love me some Bob, this show is pumping me up, Jeff! Danke.

Anyone know if Karen Dalton ever recorded a dylan cover?
  11:41pm
Hoky Hairickson:

i would like to give a shout out to an oogle who hides his deep love of bob dylan out there on the wild rails... this is for his dead dog, malice. much love. hope you are listening somewhere out there

JakeGould:

GE Smith’s workman like guitar playing is fine. His face is what has to literally go.
  11:41pm
phat:

I will say that lately when I've heard Dylan he's been clicking with me more then he had.

Jake...I think he's a handsome fella.

@MrPumpy: Daryl Hall’s 1980 solo “Sacred Songs” is a companion piece if you will.

Carmichael:

Jesus Jake, I’ve never had the nerve to say that out loud. But yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
melinda:

I used to think GE Smith resembled Jane Wyman.
  11:43pm
Carmichael:

Or Lurch.
  11:44pm
JakeGould:

@Carmichael: Everyone I have known has complained about GE Smith’s literal face when he gets into that “I’m into this!” expression. Nope!
  11:44pm
phat:

He looks pretty cool in the video for Fashion (a record featuring Fripp!).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Mr. Pumpy:

Is that Nick Drake?
  11:45pm
JakeGould:

@phat: He’s not actually playing guitar in the video for “Fashion” which helps the face issue immensely.
Avatar 11:46pm
Aaron:

Oh yeah, it’s nick
  11:46pm
phat:

I really do need more Nick Drake in my life.
  11:47pm
phat:

@jake Maybe the gum chewing helps, too?
  11:47pm
JakeGould:

@Melinda: Yeah, Jane Wyman has a similar face. And if she jammed on guitar I would hate how her face looks at that exact moment too.
  11:47pm
tranewreck:

If only there was a Shepp- Dylan cover the circle would be complete
Great show

Chris H:

Went w my Dad to Santana/Dylan summer 93 at GSAC, among the worst shows I’ve ever seen. Bob was in bad shape. Dylan w Phil at the same venue in 99 was much better, as was Dylan w Petty in early 2000s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Mr. Pumpy:

@Jake...yes! RF twiddling the knobs and contributing on both. Guitar torture ala Fripp.

Did GE Smith tour with Bowie? I need to look that up.

Hoboken 2013 was cool bc I legit didn’t know he was playing until I saw the commotion & heard the soundcheck from my office window and then bolted down to the park to find a ticket.

Mike & Dusty:

Willem Dafoe + guitar = GE Smith
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Mr. Pumpy:

@phat, I wouldn't bother. He has played with everybody. I think he even sat in with a few of my high school bands!
  11:50pm
JakeGould:

Don’t listen to me, here is Dangerous Minds on GE Smith… “No matter who Smith played with, whether it was Dylan or Bowie, he always tried to upstage the artist he was supposed to be supporting. With his rigor mortis grin and guitar-slinger grimaces, Smith is one of the most inauthentic musicians on the fucking planet. Nothing notable about his style at all. A hired gun who can play some fills and solos while the front man grabs a fresh beer or a bottle of water from the drum stand.

Remember Smith’s insufferable mugging on SNL? Buffoon rock.” dangerousminds.net...

@M&D...I see it.

That Dylan show I saw with GE Smith was objectively terrible. I was excited to see him! The venue was terrible. That didn't help.

This is excellent. The best celebration of Mr. Zimmerman's birthday. I stayed up far too late to listen and I will catch the remainder on archive!
  11:53pm

Holy shit, he played the RNC? Ugh.
  11:53pm

Maybe it’s bc the era where he led the SNL band is my sweet spot, but GE Smith never bothered me

I was going to do some movie watching tonight being I am at my house for the first time in a week instead of looking after my pops. Alas, this show was too awesome to let go. Thanks again, Jeff and skeleton crew.

And believe it or not… Been listening… So great tracks here! Kudos, Jeff.

Great show: Covers that I forgot (sorry, Spirit!) - the rare and the better known. Thanks for NOT playing "Mr. Tambourine Man" and 5 others by The Four Seasons (from a 1965 album)... Save it for a scary covers show!
