Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

HDT-TV
  1:10pm Dean:

Good question, @ngh. Looks like the founder opened it "in honor of his Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors." The founder was murdered at the door of the venue in 1996 in retaliation for having ousted the drunk and unruly patron. We didn't live in the Bay Area, but a week or two after we moved to our present house, we got a loud knock on the door around 3:00 one morning from Berkeley PD. There had been another shooting at the venue and the cops wanted to check out our backyard. Welcome to the neighborhood.

I'm on it, UM.

As a kid I thought Bobby Troup was just a cool TV doctor. Now I think of him as the genius who wrote "The Girl Can't Help It," maybe Little Richard's sleekest Specialty production.

Okay, keeping it on the topic of television. The best version of Bye Bye Black Bird is by LaWanda Page - Aunt Ester from Sanford and Son. Why? because she can't sing for shit and she has a really filthy mouth. Lawanda rules, sez Franco. I just wish she had covered Little Johnny Jewel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

I remember copies of an old Redd Foxx comedy LP in a record store I used to frequent in the mid '70s. It was called 'You Gotta Wash Your Ass', and it featured a medium close-up colour photo of Redd in a barnyard, standing beside the rear end of the actual equine item, holding its tail up high with one hand and holding his (Redd's) nose with the other...screwing up his face into a peee-yeeeww expression. It was so-low rent that it left scar tissue on a few of my brain cells....I can see it now...so clearly....peeeee-yeewww !

@Lizzie What's funny is Little Richard in several interviews talked about how pop music was dull before him, using as evidence the tag line "Swing and sway with Sammy Kaye." Bobby Troup's first hit as a songwriter was Sammy Kaye's recording of "Daddy."

Rev!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I would kind of like to hear "Hobo Man".
Avatar 1:52pm Bri The Beatnik:

Love the set!
  1:52pm Dean:

Best I can find is that the Bob Troup Trio released "Bye Bye Blackbird" backed with "Heidi" on Bullet 1035. The Bullet 1000 series appeared from Jan. '47 through around March '52. Last serial number was 1108.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

Me too, Lizzie!

Bri!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Uncle Michael:

I figured they were two sides of a single on Bullet. I didn't come up with a catalog number at all. Well done, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm jmd:

UW! Dang, Huevos! I haven't listened to that one in a long time, so great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oops. Gotta go. Web only OUTSIDE the Library - may have a fix for that soon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

jmd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

good luck, Rev
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm jmd:

UM, not UW. oopsie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

I like how Curt found his inner Billy Gibbons on Huevos.
  1:58pm Dean:

In the April 17, '48, issue Billboard magazine reported that deal maker George (Bullets) Dorgon "arranged to turn over eight sides by the Bob Troup Trio to Bullet Records." So, 1947 or 48?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Uncle Michael:

You should consider doing this sort of thing for a living, Dean.
  2:00pm Dean:

Gotta be '48, because Discogs shows a missing 1035 falling squarely among that year's releases.

A living? I pay good money to do this stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Alvy Singer:

Cocaine was the drug of choice when the Meat Puppets recorded Huevos.
Avatar 2:01pm Franco Twinkie:

Michael, someplace on my all time list of shows is Meat Puppets at Club Lingerie sometime in the '80's. Opening were Billy Bragg and The Long Ryders.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Jeff Golick:

I passed out at a Meat Puppets show.
  2:04pm Dean:

Here's another '48 BT Trio Bullet record, ser. no. 1055: https://archive.org/details/78_baby-baby-all-the-time_bob-troup-trio-bob-troup-troup_gbia0159257a
Avatar 2:07pm WLSClark:

Just checking in early for Bob Irwin's special and heard one of my fave Moodies tunes in "its Up to You" and then, this last song by Stackridge was fantastic. I've never heard their stuff before. Good sounds! Never caught your show and sounds good!
Avatar 2:07pm Franco Twinkie:

Hell fucking yes Michael! I saw the Meat puppets evolve from a noise/chaoes/thrash band into a super tight power trio that could smash anything in their path. Good times from the long ago for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

Alvy! Don't sneeze!
  2:08pm dan:

The weird cover version of the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

@Franco Twinkie That Club Lingerie show sounds incredibly wonderful and 80s AF :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Uncle Michael:

Clark!
Avatar 2:09pm Bri The Beatnik:

Every time I turn on a WFMU stream, the music just somehow seems to match how I’m feeling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Doug Schulkind:

I had a Meat Puppets t-shirt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you all for your kind words.
  2:10pm Dean:

I have the first Meat Puppets 45rpm with a unique ink drawing on ruled paper.
Avatar 2:11pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, me too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Michael 98145:

sprightly sets today
  2:12pm Dean:

We were haunting the same stores around the same time, Franco. I bet you once took my parking space.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

These sounds are the best ones for making sourdough pancakes. Mmmm!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Michael 98145:

yum, pancakes!
Avatar 2:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, more likely I stole your beer at Al's Bar when you were distracted by that girl with the long braid dancing in front of you.
  2:17pm Dean:

I remember that, both the girl and the stolen beer. Honest to god, I used to do homework at Al's and Gorki's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

Lane's not here to tell us who's playing steel on this Hank Thompson....or to ask *me*...like I'd know.
  2:18pm Dean:

Funny you mention Lane. I was wondering where he's been earlier in the show.
Avatar 2:20pm Franco Twinkie:

Wait! More likely YOU stole my beer while I was trying unsuccesfully to chat up said girl with braid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Uncle Michael:

This is pretty great library music.
Avatar 2:22pm Franco Twinkie:

I never did homework in my life, let alone in a bar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Jeff Golick:

Well, Martial Solal is the real deal. Still alive at 92, I notice.
  2:22pm Dean:

You know what they say about beer. You can only borrow it.
Avatar 2:23pm slater:

raise that roof, uncle
  2:24pm Dean:

The cover of this Supervixens record must have sold a few copies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

slater...after three hours, I'm raising it with borrowed beer that needs to be returned
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

All those comps had fine cover art, Dean.
  2:25pm Dean:

Yeah, a real Titian, that cover designer. (Props to the one enduring SNL skit from the old days.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Oh good, more albums to add to my Discogs want list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Gina Bacon:

Howdy, Friday people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Jeff Golick:

Up...down...up...down...which is it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Uncle Michael:

Gina!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

if it weren't for the singers, i wouldn't know whether to get up or get down
Avatar 2:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Speaking of a girl I would have chatted up in a bar, Gina!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Jeff Golick: it's all about what order you go in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know...BECAUSE of the singers!
  2:29pm Dean:

Supine or prone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Jeff Golick:

Once I'm down, I tend to stay down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Jeff: then try up first, just in case
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Jeff Golick:

Too late, @Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

ha ha, Jeff! My partner just said, "I've gotten down and i can't get up!" that makes three of us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Michael 98145:

we be having a good time, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

I'm so grateful to be here! Thanks, everyone! EVERYONE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Thanks for spending three hours a week with us, UM.
  2:35pm Dean:

Good gosh, there's a "jazz" album, a concept album, no less, that takes an easy listener, educational, health-fitness approach to being supine or prone!
https://www.discogs.com/Malagnini-Igino-Musica-E-Ginnastica-Vol1/release/11664343

"Modal" I'm thinking is referring to mode, as in fashion?

Solal did terrific work on Steeplechase, among a bunch of other labels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Gina Bacon:

Yay! Thanks, Uncle Michael!!
Radio is keeping me sane these days, too.

Enjoying the show today Uncle Michael. Helps stave off the boredom of dealing with attorney billing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

and it's unlikely i'd be able to pronounce it correctly

Michael, in 1971, I bought Surf's Up at the same time I bought the first album by the New Riders....at JC Penny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Uncle Michael:

Ahh, I'll start sending lists of things I need help with, Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm CHUCK ROAST:

Even though it's a patchwork effort, it definitely has legs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Rich in Washington:

Gawd awmighty, I sure know I could use phonetic help with lots of artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

UM! hee hee! it IS handy to have a linguist in the house
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm doctorjazz:

Thanks UM, great show (this Friday schedule is exhausting now...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for stopping by to visit, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Rich in Washington:

Re: your comment about Turkish music earlier, UM, I once did a whole show of Turkish music and had a really nice Turkish speaking listener call in and very politely corrected my pronunciations and attempted to convey some Turkish character pronunciations. Fuck all if I can remember any of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm spodiodi:

thanks, UM!
