A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Trouble: I wanted to let you know I took your suggestion and watched the Piketty film (Capital) - watched most of it twice, actually. It was very good, reminded me a bit of "The Big Short" in its (successful) attempt to make economics accessible to general audiences. The economists and professors they interviewed were great. I'd suggest the film to anyone. I admire Piketty and I think he's doing a lot of good in the world. But at the end of the day I'm a lot further to the left than he is - he thinks capitalism can be saved by changing policies (mostly taxation), whereas I'm pretty convinced that it needs to be demolished. But I see anyone who is advocating any sort of leftist reforms, no matter how mild, as an ally. So thanks for the movie suggestion & the conversation it triggered. (Did any other listeners check it out?)

@p20 Yes, and the actual Four Futures diagram reminded me so much of one of the best bits I ever got from my high school economics class, way back in the day. A diagram with democracy–dictatorship on one axis, private–public ownership on the other, dividing the space into four economic-political systems: capitalism, socialism, communism, and fascism. It's such a clear and simple way to think about some pretty huge and complex ideas.

@Crudbringer: I think "nature red in tooth and claw" is a bit of a fantasy too. First of all, Nature is complex. Ants live in cooperative societies. There are all kinds of examples of cooperation and symbiosis. Secondly, we don't live in a state of nature. We live in a constructed social system. And we should have some say in the construction of said system. And I think we should try to uphold basic Enlightenment values, which have been around for hundreds of years.

And in lots of ways, the capitalist system we've devised is more brutal than anything to be found in the natural world. Look at how many people someone like Bezos (on track to become the first trillionaire) can dominate. In a nature-based society his power would be much more limited. (And he'd probably get eaten).

@p20 agree, except that I think the "construction" of our social system increasingly resembles the physical construction of our bridges and schools. Men with spade beards and Deep Bleefs about their Hairtidge are polishing their guns.

I think the "brutality" of the system is just the natural result of the lack of any "rules" at all.

@p20, I think one of the books I mentioned in our recommendation fest some weeks ago was Amatka, which I think does one of the better jobs of trying -- mimetically, at least -- to figure what lies on the other side of change we are poorly able to imagine. When the capitalist system that has defined brutal life on this planet for hundreds of years is brought down, what does life look like? It's hard hard hard to get one's imagination past that point of singularity.

But extractive capitalism might and tends toward ending only when there's nothing left to extract and no one left to (force to) extract it.

As if I wasn't making myself hungry enough, now Trouble has me thinking of the Tres Amigos gatefold and the FEAST within!

Mayo was invented in Menorca, a Catalan island in the Balearics. The French occupied it for a while and claimed it, but it's Mahon sauce. That island is paradise! Mayo, cheese, horses, tomato-garlic soup, and the densest concentration of Bronze Age ruins in the Mediterranean. Oh, and 300 beaches.
