With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

Sounding great over here - maybe one brief blip.

Thanks, StringOfperils. Your picture thingy is thr caziest, baby, it's like wiggin' me! Too much!! (sorry, it's all this jazz, makes me talk this way).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm doctorjazz:

RW, haven't gotten in long rides (18+ miles), but have been able to get out with the family on shorter runs (I'll usually try to sprint as fast as I can on these for exercise in short runs, then wait up).
(I also heard done short drop outs)
Avatar 1:56pm StringOFperils:

This is so great. I like Charles Tolliver, and again, what a band!
  1:57pm Irene:

With the exception of a phone drop-out as we passed Citi Field (miss you, NY Mets!) the signal has been solid. Now sitting in the parking lot of Jones Beach, enjoying pb&j sandwiches and your show. Great choices!
Avatar 1:59pm Simply Stork:

What a nice image, Irene! Bon appetit!! Looking forward to your show tomorrow!! That's noon-oclock EDT, kids!!

Avatar 2:48pm Simply Stork:

Beautiful souls: this show is going WAY the hell long tonight. Hopefully I can keep you Club-bound for the duration, but there's that pesky free-will issue. Do circle back to the archive if ya can. And next week - it's one more bacchanal: Blessed Archie Shepp is turning 83, and he's gettin' cake!! Hope you can be there for the genius-of-the-week show. After that sucker, I'm gonna go free-form for a while and play all that OTHER great stuff I can't stop thinking about.

Avatar 3:13pm Simply Stork:

Sem, be weller than well. Hopefully greet you at the Shindig du Shepp next Sabbath.

Hey, coel, I'm pourin' heah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm coelacanth∅:

"a charm"...how charming. seems a bit demeaning, like, because they're diminutive in size they don't deserve a real bird term; just a charming one.
(meanwhile, hummingbirds are pretty badass)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm coelacanth∅:

Wolfie i'm having tea but as soon as i'm finished, thank you...
Avatar 3:17pm Simply Stork:

ngh!! I wish it was called a murder of storks. That'd make me cool, if anything could.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Stork, great tribute (as usual)! Good week all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm coelacanth∅:

just be thankful it's not a "contradiction of storks", or a "gargle of storks", or a "mutation of" or a "pitying of..." ....

Thank you, good Dr. See you round.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm coelacanth∅:

i just wonder why anyone listened to the people who started these terms.

..."a plump of waterfoul";
"a building of rooks";
"a pride of peacocks"...
i mean, just don't use these terms! i'm sure they were meant as a joke originally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm coelacanth∅:

take good care, good doctor.
Avatar 3:28pm StringOFperils:

@drjazz...have a good week
Avatar 3:28pm Simply Stork:

Thank you for posting that, chresti! Extremely interesting film. An unflinching look at the world of drugs and at an asshole director who tries to profit from their misery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm chresti:

See ya, doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm doctorjazz:

Bye all, c y'all later, of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm chresti:

Much more to come, chresti. If you have to leave your perch, I hope you can alight back upon it next Sunday. Thanks for the good spirits. Speaking of which, have yourself a little something, won't you?

Good you're still going
Avatar 3:59pm Simply Stork:

The motif on New York Calling - that fast three-note stab - somehow sums up the terror and tension of New York. Reminds me a little of the sounder for Eyewitness News, back in the day. I'm elderly.

ngh - oh, Homey!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm spodiodi:

Jackie McLean and company's take on it without lyrics is just as sad.
aloha, ngh, Stanley, Jeff G.
Avatar 4:10pm Simply Stork:

I can still remember our high school production of Oliver - not bad, actually. This sweet kid with a high tenor voice singing that song. Sweetness pure.
  4:10pm Dean:

The cover of A Ghetto Lullaby credits Louis Barts, the label Lionel Bart. The latter is correct.
Avatar 4:11pm northguineahills:

I like hearing bed music from djs used as the longform song by others...
Avatar 4:12pm Simply Stork:

Hey, nice PJ's, JG! You went with race-cars!
Avatar 4:13pm Simply Stork:

Yeah, I just realized this was - Scott McDowell's theme?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm spodiodi:

Stork, i too was in that play, maybe at about 8 or 9yrs? i still remember it all pretty well

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Todd76Pct:

Stork: Great show from beginning to end. Thanks so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm coelacanth:

Stork @4.13 i think a different version though. the trumpets sounded very raw (not in a bad way, by any account) compared to Scott's opening theme version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm chresti:

Still hear!
Avatar 4:38pm Simply Stork:

Yeah, I think you're right coel. There was something different about that version.
Avatar 4:38pm Simply Stork:

Avatar 4:39pm Simply Stork:

DrJ - still around?- It's 10:39 pm as i type..
Avatar 4:40pm Simply Stork:

Hi Todd76Pct - thanks - glad you're still rockin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm doctorjazz:

Never heard this one, like NHOP's bass (been waiting for my daughter to get ready, thinks we're finally going, bye!)
Avatar 4:42pm Wolfgang:

Isn't that a helluva bass line? Can't get it outta my head!!
Avatar 4:44pm StringOFperils:

How are you holding up, Stork?
Avatar 4:45pm Wolfgang:

Holding up? I'm prone, baby! And it freaks me out!! Sorry - the jazz again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Todd76Pct:

Had the privilege of seeing Billy Gault w/ J & Rene McLean, Carvin, and Ridley in 1975 in CT. UCONN, I think, opening for Archie Shepp w/ Dave Burrell, Cameron Brown, and Carvin again. I think Gault was local to Hartford at that time.
Avatar 4:45pm StringOFperils:

Like, I'm wise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Todd76Pct:

Hi Stork! I'm glad that you're still spinning at 'FMU, and keeping this marathon going today!
Avatar 4:47pm Wolfgang:

Makes sense, Todd. Carvin may have studied with McLean - who was teaching at Hartford, I think.
Avatar 4:56pm northguineahills:

Bravo, Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Todd76Pct:

@Wolfgang - I think you're right. Billy Gault might have been associated w/ U of Hartfort Hartt School of Music. He may have also been associated with Fahakhan from what little I can find online. I do remember him in black suit and bowtie that day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Todd76Pct:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Doug Schulkind:

A wise man once said that this LP by Moncur is right up there with Out to Lunch. Seems like yesterday I heard that.
Avatar 4:58pm Wolfgang:

Bravo all of you stick-to-it-ers! We are straring down the barrel at Hour Six...stay strong!!
Avatar 4:59pm Wolfgang:

Who was that wise, masked man, Doug? He had flaming red curly hair, whoever he was.
  4:59pm Dean:

A 2007 dissertation out of U. Mass. Amherst states, "An
adherent of Elijah Muhammad’s Nation of Islam, William X. Gault’s singular recording was facilitated by his association with Jackie McLean."
  5:01pm Dean:

The dissertation, Vindicating Karma: Jazz and the Black Arts Movement, was by W.S. Tkweme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Todd76Pct:

@Dean: Thanks, very interesting.
Avatar 5:07pm northguineahills:

@Storj: Can you beat Doug's record of 7 hours?
Avatar 5:07pm Wolfgang:

Wow, very cool, Dean. Thanks!
Avatar 5:10pm Wolfgang:

Not tonight, ngh. Gives me a target to shoot at, though. I'm comin for ya, Dougie!!
  5:13pm Dean:

You're welcome, Todd76Pct and Hairs Torque.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael will be doing 7 hours in a few weeks. His own show and then the new 4-hour Drummer Stream Discotheque.
Avatar 5:30pm Simply Stork:

My name seems to change without me doing anything - anyway, I'm not responsible for anything that guy Wolfgang wrote.
Avatar 5:30pm Simply Stork:

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!? 7 HOURS STRAIGHT OF DANCE DJ'ING? I think Uncle Michael is doping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Doug Schulkind:

No. Three hours of Hinky Dinky Time, then four hours of dance music.
Avatar 5:37pm Simply Stork:

Oh, right. Still, I think he should be tested for 'roids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Doug Schulkind:

You know the deal, Stork. Anyone on the Drummer Stream tests negative for drugs, and they are outta here.
Avatar 5:39pm Simply Stork:

I know. Never had such job security.
Avatar 5:40pm northguineahills:

Actually, I believe David Dichelle also did a 7 hour set, once (or twice).
  5:40pm Dean:

Reminds me that I have a diagnosis of an infection of moronavirus. Symptoms include loss of one's sense of humor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Doug Schulkind:

L-O-V-E this one. With every corpuscle.
Avatar 5:47pm Simply Stork:

Thought this would be a nice one to tuck us in with. Barbara Simmons is a wow.
Avatar 5:48pm Simply Stork:

How great is Lamont Johnson? On 3 great tracks tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Doug Schulkind:

She is (was) a poet. These are her own words. I remember encountering this poem in Leroi Jones and Larry Neal's Black Fire anthology.
Avatar 5:49pm Simply Stork:

ngh - oh, David is the Iron Man of the whole WFMU Omniverse.
Avatar 5:52pm northguineahills:

My band once did a 24 hour performance as part of an artist happening. But, there were multiple members of us, and one of us would take a 30min-2hr break every now and then...
  5:53pm Dean:

When you finished the marathon performance, ngh, and the audience demanded an encore, what did you tell them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Todd76Pct:

Barbara Simmons aka Barbara Donald was once married to Sonny Simmons and played trumpet as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Doug Schulkind:

@Todd76Pct
That's not correct. Two different Barbaras.
Avatar 5:55pm Simply Stork:

Thank you thank you everyone still on the dance floor, and to all those who've peeled off. What a wonderful 6 hours this has been. Come on back next week - the Shepp ship sails at noon EDT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Todd76Pct:

Doug: I forgot the question mark after that one. Was wondering.
Avatar 5:57pm northguineahills:

Take a bow, Wolfgang, I mean, Stork....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm spodiodi:

thanks, Stork!
Avatar 5:57pm northguineahills:

@Dean: By then, there was only maybe 20 people left, and most of them were asleep.... (and I was ready for sleep as well).
