Nice try Doug; that was one of the Sixties events with more levity. Hee.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am doctorjazz:

Alright, you don't need to keep harping on it, Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am WR:

Hello folks. My first day of self imposed no coffee. Not sure how this is going to work out. And I can't find my harmonica either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

Glad you could blow in, doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

Glad you have self-imposed yes-Drummer, WR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am WR:

Seems we have a progression in progress. Next tune likely will have harmonica fronting funk band. Then disco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Nice to hear that Harmonica Paul didn't feel pidgeon-holed into playing harmonica exclusively.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

I like the way you think, WR.
  9:27am JtotheK:

Harmonica Fats must have had a 4 car driveway with his very generous offers for neighbors to park. Hi Doug, hi everyone!
Avatar 9:29am StringOFperils:

He had a table full of wine and a table full of champagne, so the 4-car driveway isn't surprising. A lot of tailgate barbecue happening on that driveway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

Here's your funk band fronted by a harmonica, WR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

Glad you could pull over and listen, JtotheK!

Day 60 and the red bud is in bloom. A beautiful day on the isthmus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

That's precisely what this song is about, βrian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Uncle Michael:

Now that's a familiar gif.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Uncle Michael:

That gif has a bizarre synchronicity with my show today. I'm playing one of the few tracks from and album the guy holding the microphone is NOT the singer on.
Avatar 10:03am βrian:

Was that image taken in the DMZ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Uncle Michael:

If you mean Comiskey Park, then yes.
Avatar 10:07am βrian:

A Guinean friend told me the most beautiful women lived in the forested region of Guinea. His eyes were wide.
Avatar 10:07am Stork:

Greets, Drummy pls! I agree with Doug's opine about musicians ot given credit - unless it was in the bad old days when musicians (mostly black) got their cabaret cards yanked and couldn't perform under their own names.
Avatar 10:07am Stork:

That's Drummy-Palz!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael and Stork, two fine gents!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
You know who the guy holding the microphone is, I assume.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

This sure sounds like a Disney tune. Hi-ho, Hi-ho, it's off to work we go...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Listener Bob in PGH:

@ Uncle Michael - is that gif related to the infamous stop disco event?
Avatar 10:13am fred:

A long-held view in ethno-musicology was that musicians had no individual creativity but were just playing exactly what had been handed down through generations. So their names were thought to be irrelevant. I heard that is no longer the dominant view in the field, but it's not gone either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

Drummy-palz sounds like a neurological movement disorder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am WR:

Beautiful big band sounds! About what year recorded?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Bob in PGH
The smashing record man is the odious Steve Dahl, the Chicago DJ who organized the Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

A date isn't listed. Let me do some digging.
Avatar 10:16am βrian:

Why is he wearing a N Korean army uniform?
Avatar 10:16am Stork:

That's what I call my dance, Dougie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Uncle Michael:

The gentleman with the microphone is Greg Gumbel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Here is the commentary provided along with the download of that Suntharaphon Big Band recording:

"Dance-ready rhythms of talung and ramwong from Thailand's preeminent mid-century urban entertainers! The Suntharaphon Band was an outgrowth of the Government Public Relations Department Band. Geared for the dancehalls of 1950s Bangkok, the group played a leading role in popularizing the genres featured on this cassette; inspired by the captivating folk rhythms of south (tailing) and northeast (ramwong) Thailand, these two state-sponsored steps were intended as local responses to the international dance crazes sweeping Thai popular culture at the time, and can still be heard pumped into public areas via p.a. systems any time a traditional holiday rolls around."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Because he was the stinkin' enemy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

No offense to my North Korean friends out there.
  10:20am Dean:

A Suntharaporn (yes, -porn) Ensemble appears on this comp.: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Jazz-And-Hot-Dance-In-Thailand-1956-1967/release/3972155

Notes indicate that their tracks were recorded "TV Studios, Paholyothin Road, Bangkok, Thailand, about mid-December 1956, matinee."

Same group? I don't know.
  10:21am Dean:

The "Ensemble" is credited for vocals. Maybe it's a sibling group.
Avatar 10:22am TDK60:

Back then, I used to have an offish attitude to disco, not my cuppa tea. But when the anti-disco folks began I felt there was some racism in there. In the '80s I once was DJing in a club, a guy walked up to me, said "Take that disco off!" I said "No, and it's funk anyway." (Teena Marie). I later read a pro-disco rap in liner notes to Fripp's Under Heavy Manners LP in which he noted disco was dance music of oppressed people-- blacks, gays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

Pretty sure that was a different band, Dean.
  10:23am Bill from Rock Tavern:

More Kunchai,!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

The whole reactionary "disco sucks" backlash was dripping with racism and homophobia.

Welcome aboard, Bill from Rock Tavern!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Uncle Michael:

Covered, here:
  10:24am rw:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Jeff Golick:

@UM: same gif on that show and this one right here. Coincidence?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

Holy shit! I don't remember that GIF from your playlist, Uncle Michael. Completely independently (I pinkie swear) I made the GIF appearing on this playlist.

Great minds GIF alike.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Maggie B.:

So happy to hear Jason Sigal is coming back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am WR:

Thank you Dean for doing the searching. It allows me to concentrate on making my oatmeal buckwheat mixed nut and blueberries pancake and yet know I can circle back to learn more about what we heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

@Maggie B
Yes! Jason is one of the "good guys."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 10:44am fred:

Meeting Jason was the most surprising of my (few) WFMU DJ encounters: he popped in my office at work asking "are you fred?". My red WFMU bag was the telltale sign

PLAYLIST: wfmu.org...
  11:33am Mark R:

This "I First 'U' Last" track is wackadoo, as we say in NJ
  11:35am Dean:

Mean Blintz was the name of the first etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

@Mark R
Is it wackadoo pork roll or wackadoo Taylor ham?
Avatar 11:36am Martinibomb:

@Doug @11:26 yes I prefer the exiting flavors of sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrate in my cocktails.
  11:36am Funky16Corners:

Pork roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

So that's how you roll, Mark R?!
  11:37am Dean:

Woof, woof. My leg twitches when you rub my tummy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

TMI, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Uncle Michael:

I like a nice cube of pork roll in a toothpick in my Taylortini.
  11:42am Funky16Corners:

That sounds like NJ cocktail!
Avatar 11:42am Martinibomb:

@Dean your comment made me google why dogs twitch their leg when u rub em. Turns out it actually irritates them in a similar way to a bug crawling on our skin and that leg reflex kicks in.
Avatar 11:43am βrian:

I had cat whom I could make twitch when I rubbed his ear a certain way. Very entertaining.
