The weirdest was when someone would come in with a standard collection filled with Mantovanis and Original Cast Albums and *one* incredibly rare and sought after private press record. How did this happen??

Avatar 3:23pm Irwin:

Science and Invention, May 1927:

There is in Paris an organization known as the Anti-Kissing League which is seeking to impose the decree, “Thou shalt not kiss.”

They argue that in every kiss no fewer than 40,000 disease germs are transferred. They say that if every person before kissing would pause for a moment and consider the possible consequences of a transfer of 40,000 germs the practice would die out.

Why is it, this league demands, that American or European motion films when edited for Japanese consumption show no kissing scenes? In Japan there is no inclination to learn the art of kissing.

In order to test the truth of the claims made by the Anti-Kissing League, this publication decided to actually breed germs.

Avatar 3:35pm Irwin:

[continued from above, Science and Invention, May 1927]

The results of the laboratory test showed that there were a surprising number of microorganisms transferred during every kiss, but the number was nowhere near the amount claimed. But the experiments showed one very important and startling fact to which very little attention has been paid.

No longer need the boy friend be a conscientious objector to a kiss coming from his enamored, garnished with a plentiful application of lipstick. He now has a reason—a scientific reason for such refusal. The average number of germs transferred in a kiss from untainted lips; by that is meant lips that were not shaped with the red pencil, was 534. The average number of micro-organisms transmitted (story jumps to page 34, cont'd below)

I'm a little confused about the composition of that cover art. Why are there two different sized microscopes? Why is she dressed so inappropriately for a lab? And is that picket fence in the lab, with phallic looking posts?

Avatar 3:46pm Roberto:

That last one reminded me of when I was a kid and I tried to make my own sound effects by speeding up the recording process then playing back at regular speed. I turned a lightbulb smashed in a garbage can into an exploding grenade.
  3:47pm scott:

Ahem, it's a test tube rack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Phillippe Bastille:

ok, that explains a lot...
Avatar 3:48pm Irwin:

[continued from above, Science and Invention, May 1927]

on lipsticked lips was 707. Inasmuch as the same girls were used in the test, the proof is conclusive that painted lips aid materially in germ transmission.

A number of girls picked at random were asked to impress a kiss on blood agar plates. The plates were incubated and the number of colonies counted and the nature of the genus were then microscopically analyzed. The cultures indicated the presence of many pathogenic types of organisms. We have the streptococcus viridans, which is found in cases of endocarditis lenta, a malignant endocarditis of a slow course (endocarditis is an inflammation of the membrane lining the cavities of the heart), streptococcus communis; staphylococcus albus; a species from milk and the pus of osteomyelitis which is not generally considered contagious.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Phillippe Bastille:

Even though I'm right-handed, I've always looked in microscopes and telescopes with my left eye. Any other right-handers do that? And if so, can we then deduce the "scientist" is left handed since he using his right eye? {I really need to find something better to occupy my mind}
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar 3:52pm Jennica:

LOVE this.
Avatar 3:53pm Roberto:

David, I don't think I still have them, although I do have a box of cassettes from the '80s that I haven't reviewed in decades.
Avatar 3:53pm Irwin:

[continued from above, Science and Invention, May 1927]

The staphylococcus aureus which is found in the air, water, soil, etc., and which is the cause of the carbuncle was located on the lips. It is also found in cases of osteomyelitis and sometimes in bronchopneumonia. The culture plates also showed the micrococcus catarrhalis which is found in the nose and throat of healthy persons, as well as those suffering from colds and other respiratory affections. It may excite catarrhal inflammation and pneumonia may occur as a secondary invader. Another important organism is the pneumococcus. This organism causes lobar pneumonia.

Contrary to popular belief, these songs were not enough to release Morrison from his Bang Records contract. The last requirement was left up to Warner Brothers executive Joe Smith to fulfill.

Smith had mixed feelings about his new artist. “[Morrison] was a hateful little guy,” he once said. “

[conclusion from above, Science and Invention, May 1927]

What then, do the tests show? They indicate clearly that the average healthy person has about 500 germs on his lips which are transmitted during a kiss. It further shows that many of these germs are capable of causing disease, but the reason they do not do so is because the body resistance is sufficient to ward them off. Germs die rapidly when exposed to temperatures lower than that of the body and such temperatures are found on the lips and palms of the hands.

Germs also rapidly lose their virulence. It has been claimed that about one in 250,000 people will contract a disease by kissing. The figure must be much less if unpainted lips are kissed. It therefore follows that kissing is reasonably safe and that only those diseases actually due to germ infections could be propagated. In addition to those listed above the important ones are typhoid, measles and diphtheria.

The facts given in this article indicate that kissing, as far as transmission of germs is concerned, is not as dangerous as the first reports would have it. From any other angle we refuse to comment.
