Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am Gary:

Good morning, Jeff! Likely transferring to app in a moment so I can listen on the couch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am WR:

Back from grocery run. Sanitizing while listening. Hi Gary, haven't listened to you M. Faithful show yet. Looking forward to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Jeff Golick:

Oh it's a treat, @WR! Hello and welcome!
@Gary, see you on the couch!
  9:01am Gary via app:

Hey kids! Securely couched now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am fred:

Good morning Jeff and all headed out, however virtually
Avatar 9:02am StringOFperils:

Good morning all.
  9:06am Gary via app:

Yay Bandcamp
Avatar 9:07am TDK60:

Morning from north Manhattan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @fred! Hello, @StringOFperils! Hello, @TDK60!
  9:09am DJpeterDE:

Good morning everyone! Gary, how many hours of bandcamp music did you shell out for?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

destination: ON!
  9:12am Gary via app:

I actually was very light on Bandcamp Friday — I’m saving up for a new computer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Jeff Golick:

Disco @Doug!
  9:13am DJpeterDE:

Jeff: two weeks ago you played new Peter Evans and I predicted I’d soon binge on Evans records... guess what happened on Bandcamp Friday...
  9:14am JtotheK:

Hi Jeff hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am fred:

@DJPeterDE: Sadly, 0. I completely forgot about it (too much work, broke the 70-hour mark this week). And I had a few things in sight too, but I just blanked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE, you know yourself -- and good music -- well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Andrew Waterloo:

I bought about 24 hours worth of music
  9:15am DJpeterDE:

Gary: I admire your discipline! That was hard, I imagine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @JtotheK! Greetings, @Andrew "24" Waterloo!
  9:16am DJpeterDE:

Fred: yikes! Hope you are taking care of your self in the few remaining waking hours!
  9:17am Listener Gregory:

Good Mayning, Jeff and doubters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Jeff Golick:

I similarly do not have that much discipline. Only this discipline: sunramusic.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Andrew Waterloo:

I had to cancel a hotel booking so I had some bandcamp cash and made some donations to local charities
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Jeff Golick:

What is up, @Listener Gregory!

Good on ya, @Andrew Waterloo!
  9:19am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, when your show starts, the stream cuts out and we hear a few seconds of marimba (?) and fender rhodes before your theme starts. Is that your doing? If so, what IS that music??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jeff Golick:

@fred, 70 hours? Are you covering for other people?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am fred:

It's getting hard for me to know which day it is. Only the WFMU schedule keeps me aware of the day in the week. I might call Sunday OUTday from now on, but that sounds a bit painful during lockdown
Avatar 9:21am hyde:

hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @hyde!

@LG: it's a tune from Stanley Cowell, "Traveling' Man"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am fred:

@Jeff: Officially yes, but they either don't exist or have been furloughed (but with pay). Thing is, part of my work is for record labels and distributors, and they're having a busy time
Avatar 9:23am duke:

Good morning all
  9:23am Listener Gregory:

It's the pre-theme theme? Nice. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Jeff Golick:

(I used to use "Travelin' Man" to make sure both channels were coming through, in earlier days, because it has extreme separation. Then I just go used to hearing it.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @duke!
  9:24am Listener Gregory:

I like it. It warns me to finish getting dressed and run downstairs to turn on my "internet radio."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

I feel like I'm watching a Finnish crime drama.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am fred:

@Doug: I'm actually processing tracks from Finnish labels right now
  9:26am DJpeterDE:

Sorry to bring things down: has anyone seen confirmation about it Richie Cole?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Jeff Golick:

I know nothing @DJpeterDE....
Avatar 9:27am StringOFperils:

WIKI has him down as deceased yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Tough job. How will you ever know you're Finnish?
  9:30am DJpeterDE:

Rudresh Mahanthappa tweeted Richie Cole has passed. Haven’t seen any major news outlets yet.
  9:30am DJpeterDE:

Doug: LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am fred:

@Doug: Norway to know for sure
Avatar 9:31am TDK60:

Glad for the relatively quiet start. Yesterday, all day and late into the night, hot-rodders (don't know what they're called today) noised our neighborhood up.
Avatar 9:31am StringOFperils:

You'll know you're Finnish when you can stop all that Russian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am fred:

It never Swedends
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Jeff Golick:

Glad you have work, at least, Oslo a break would be nice, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Jeff Golick:

(I should let the pros handle this.)
Avatar 9:34am StringOFperils:

And you should wear a mask around this stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Jeff Golick:

@TDK60, yeah there's been a motorbike gunning it up and down our street this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am doctorjazz:

Good Morning, Outies!
  9:36am Listener Gregory:

DJpeterDE, Richie Cole! I saw him a number of times when I was in graduate school. Incredibly fluent and fun musician. His website doesn't list his death yet. I'll be sad if it's true.

Hey, there, @doctorjazz!
Avatar 9:38am TDK60:

The current situation has me disliking weekends when more people come out, including those less community-minded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

Welcome, @Dean. I feel like you are the official research librarian of these boards.
  9:39am Dean:

Happy to fill the role.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, parks in NYC are only going to get more crowded as the weather gets nicer. One of the great oases of Brooklyn, the massive Greenwood Cemetery, is threatening to close its gates because folks are bringing their dogs in (illegal) or biking around (prohibited) or generally acting the fool.
Avatar 9:40am Sem:

Good morning, Jeff the G, and D:O howdys! to the usual attendees, and thise new-to-the-show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jeff Golick:

Stream papa @Sem! Great to see you.
Avatar 9:42am hyde:

Greenwood Cemetery is super cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Andrew Waterloo:

It sucks that people abuse their privileges. It makes it so much harder to make reasonable rules for the shutdown.
  9:45am Mark R:

Saw Richie with Charles McPherson in Chicago back in the 80s. I also have not been any confirmation of his death except on wiki and some weird site like celebrity deaths.com or something.
  9:45am Mark R:

The set he and Charles played was great btw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Just purchased this beautiful item. My wife poked her head in my studio and said, "Get me that."

I do what I'm told.
Avatar 9:46am hyde:

i went to Greenwood once to see the Saint Gaudens grave for Stanford White
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Jeff Golick:

Oh that's a great memory, @Mark R. And welcome!
  9:47am Mark R:

Loving this long Anthoy Pirog/Luke Stewart track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Jeff Golick:

My work here is done, @Doug. (Tho she may not dig the flip.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am fred:

@Doug: no yoga today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

@hyde: I don't think I've seen that. Did you have a map to get there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Noga.
  9:49am Dean:

Lynn Harrell is gone, too. Shocking. He seemed eternally youthful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
You never know. Jessie has been digging experimental sounds since we were both in short pants.
  9:51am Listener Gregory:

I liked that Pírog and Stewart a lot.
Avatar 9:53am duke:

Spent the morning watching lectures about SARS-Cov-2 on Youtube - thinking great work by scientists
Then I read the Youtube comments - we're doomed, the human race is too dumb to exist
  9:53am Listener Gregory:

I saw Richie Cole and Eddie Jefferson play in a Stanford dining hall, probably 1978. Ridiculous conditions, fantastic concert.
Avatar 9:54am hyde:

@JG yeah. it was a while ago, but somewhere on line i found a map of some of the gravestones done by famous sculptors. there's a Daniel Chester French one too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of not existing, I miss Eddie Jefferson.
  9:55am Listener Gregory:

@duke, agreed. Never read the comments, so you can maintain your illusions for a few more minutes.
  9:55am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, we all do, Doug. Just some don't realize it yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

Just to reiterate: NEVER READ THE COMMENTS. Except here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Andrew Waterloo:

@duke, YouTube comments never cease to amaze me.
Avatar 9:56am StringOFperils:

@duke...YOUTube comments are like fossils of evolutionary dead-ends. You have to turn away from the shale, to contemplate the ocean and the sky instead.
Avatar 9:57am duke:

Even the Youtube comments on music videos could make you lose your will to live
  9:58am Gary via app:

Love this crazy track. I forgot — are you using an external DAC?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Andrew Waterloo:

The one I still can't get my head wrapped around is "The Last Jedi is too much like a WW1 movie, a 2-dimensional boat chase"
Avatar 9:59am hyde:

i was looking at Youtube to listen to some particular bird calls, and noticed that nearly every bird song video has lots of dislike votes. who dislikes a bird song video???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am doctorjazz:

Like this Hound Dog Taylor's Hand, reminds me a bit of Sonny Sharrrock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

@Gary: yes.
Avatar 10:00am TDK60:

Ah yes, hats off to Tony Allen who passed recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Andrew Waterloo:

BTW.. there was a couple naval WW1 movies, they were Russian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am doctorjazz:

Jeff, what DAC? (Audiophile Geeks need to know).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am fred:

@duke: Insurance companies have been pushing hard for the acceptance of SARS-Cov-2 instead of Covid-19, because the "SARS" part allows them to deny coverage for canceled events (they usually have escape hatches for resurgence of SARS in their contracts), which leaves venues out to dry (insurance companies make money out of your will to live, as long as you don't keep it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am chresti:

Morning Jeff and OUTs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

Hi hi hi, @chresti!

@doc: this lil' guy, courtesy @UM -- www.behringer.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

(It's possible that's not a DAC; I'm no genius with this stuff.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Egad, @fred. There really is no bottom. Apparently the largest insurance provider here, UnitedHealthcare, is having a banner year. As my D:O partner Jeff Jackson has been pointing out, the stock market really seems to thrive on death.
  10:08am DJpeterDE:

Tony Allen hit me hard. Featuring him on Tuesday 10p EDT show WVUD.org but also trying to celebrate some birthdays: Stanley Cowell and Jack Walrath
Avatar 10:09am duke:

"Greed is good." - Gordon Gekko
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am fred:

I'm sure insurers will now claim covid is a pre-existing condition
Avatar 10:13am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

Maybe it's been mentioned on D-O today - but losing Bohannon and Tony Allen in the same week? A cruel blow to Drummers everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am doctorjazz:

It looks to me it's am ADC-that is, it takes an analog signal and digitizes it (the opposite off a DAC, which brings a digital signal back into the analog world-makes sound out of it). It's also got headphone output, some interfacing ability, cool! (I have some similar gear, that I rarely use).
  10:15am Listener Gregory:

Jeff wouldn't be using a DAC on the stream, though, would he? Presumably the original is digital and so is the stream. (I know nothing of this.)
Avatar 10:15am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

Anything tht converts digital to analog and/or vice vesa is clled a DAC (so sez th mighty Kenzo).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

(The nomenclature may differ in the Pro and Audiophile worlds)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Jeff Golick:

Looking forward to the show, @DJpeterDE. I think Gary might be putting something together, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Andrew Waterloo:

I'm surprised the tech term isn't just USB thingy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

(Audiophiles market pro gear for 10 times the Pro price)
Avatar 10:17am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

My typingg reelee suks eckstrah twoday.
Avatar 10:18am StringOFperils:

@listenerGregory...the signal at the microphone and outboard physical sorces like turntables/tape-decks is analog. It has yet to be digitized
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am fred:

@Hungry Wolfgang: DAC means Digital to Analog Converter, ADC means Analog to Digital Converter. Doesn't tell you much beyond that
Avatar 10:20am hyde:

my revelation for the day is finding out that cartoonist Zak Sally, whose comics i've always liked, is also the bass player on Low's Things We Lost in the Fire. how did i not know this?
Avatar 10:20am Hungry Like the Wolfgang:

Just going by what Kenzo said in a discussion about this a while back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am fred:

Going by what Kenzo says is generally a good plan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

Very cool, @hyde. Yesterday I discovered that Jim Morrison's dad was more or less responsible for the Gulf of Tonkin incident, and thus the Vietnam War?
  10:21am Listener Gregory:

@StringO, I hadn't thought about the microphone. I think that Jeff seldom uses those analog sound sources any more, but I would be happy to be corrected. I believe in physical objects.
Avatar 10:21am StringOFperils:

@listenerGregory...conversely, the signal going to Jeff's headphones is analog, after having been converted from digital at the soundcard, which is a de-facto digital to analog converter
Avatar 10:22am hyde:

@JG that i also did not know!
  10:23am DJpeterDE:

I don’t think the EP (which I have as a download) says who did this arrangement of Moanin’
  10:23am Listener Gregory:

@SOperils, true. All that happens inside my "internet radio," so I am blind to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am doctorjazz:

The mic input is as analog signal, needs converting to "squeeze through the digital wires", as Dave Sewelson would say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Andrew Waterloo:

Love that bass sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Andrew Waterloo:

I have one of these: www.behringer.com... If it's similar to Jeff's then it is the sound card.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE: Discogs has it as Tony Allen, overall...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Andrew Waterloo:

BTW.. Blue Note shop is 25% off right now
Avatar 10:26am StringOFperils:

Doh! I was trying to forget that!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Andrew Waterloo:

I'd love to jump on it but with shipping and exchange it's cheaper to just buy it at the store here.
  10:27am DJpeterDE:

@jeff thanks for arranger info
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Andrew Waterloo:

I'm on a Dr. Liston Smith binge at the moment
Avatar 10:28am StringOFperils:

You know it Andrew in Waterloo. I'm shopping out of Toronto, so same deal (or, uh,,,no deal)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am doctorjazz:

I have one of these
www.adorama.com...
I've used it maybe twice, to digitize an LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Andrew Waterloo:

Good thing for curbside and local delivery
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am doctorjazz:

That's a Tascam DR-05. From what I understand, the converter is just a chip (you likely have one in your phone). Missy often, it is paired with other chips, an amplifier, to give more functionality. But most things in the world convert digital to analog (the other way is only tru required by some users)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am doctorjazz:

I'm sending out The Complete Charlie Parker on Savoy and Dial later to some friends, off anyone would like to new included, let me know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Andrew Waterloo:

I would think of it as stages. The stage after the mic and the stage before the speakers will always be analog. Same with the any RCA, or head phone connector. If you're audio is going over optical, or HDMI it's digital.
Avatar 10:36am TDK60:

Looked online at Norwegian-to-English: this track is: Swapped Away The Cow Got Fela Again. (I guess.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Jeff Golick:

I just press the buttons, man.
  10:36am Listener Gregory:

I am cooking a lot more these days but washing up the same amount as before. Not sure this is sustainable. (Washing while listening.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Andrew Waterloo:

@Jeff.. yup.. that's when engineers get it right.
Avatar 10:38am StringOFperils:

It's like typography. one of the greatest technologies ever widely implemented and used constantly, everywhere. Nobody even notices it, or understands it in much depth. It serves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Andrew Waterloo:

You can operate anything with a PHD. A button that says "push here dummy"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am doctorjazz:

I'm going from laying in bed to lying on my couch (moving along nicely-last day of furlough, probably should do something...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Andrew Waterloo:

@String.. they say the same about design.. 99% invisible.
Avatar 10:48am Franco Twinkie:

Jeff, not a legend, fact. I saw the pictures on my computer screen. But I will consider the possibility, maybe it was just another photo shop charade. Still, hound Dog Taylor was pretty great.
  10:49am Dean:

"It is difficult to determine exactly when the first data converter was made or what form it took. The earliest recorded binary DAC known to the authors of this book is not electronic at all, but hydraulic. Turkey, under the Ottoman Empire, had problems with its public water supply, and sophisticated systems were built to meter water. One of these...dates to the 18th Century. An example of an actual dam using this metering system was the Mahmud II dam built in the early 19th century near Istanbul..."

StringOF, I haven’t seen it but I know there’s a movie about Helvetica. I think it’s called Helvetica
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

@Franco Twinkie: thanks for confirming. Your word is all I need. Welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am doctorjazz:

Loved that Available Jelly track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Morning, @rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Jeff Golick:

There is a movie called Helvetica, @rw! It's exactly what you might think it is. The same movie-makers produced something else called, like Object, re industrial design, I think.
  10:54am Listener Gregory:

I suggest we all begin each of our comments with the phrase, "In these uncertain times."
Avatar 10:55am Franco Twinkie:

I wonder if I had an extra finger on each hand if my typing would improve?
  10:56am rw:

In these uncertain times we could all use an extra finger
Avatar 10:57am StringOFperils:

Oh, we're getting the finger alright.
Avatar 10:58am Franco Twinkie:

Hey rw! Going for a spin this morning? It's nice out!

  11:00am DJpeterDE:

Local trombone player Bob Mielke died last month, per this: https://www.berkeleyside.com/2020/05/01/remembering-long-time-local-musician-bob-mielke

I hadn't heard of him, but after reading the tribute I visited the links in the comments, e.g., http://jazzhotbigstep.com/471823.html ...where I see a photo and mp3 with Barbara Dane and a reference to Terry Garthwaite!
  11:01am Dean:

  11:03am rw:

Franco, I’m not sure but considering it. Still waking up. How are the monsters coming along?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

Back from a long dog walk. Ironically, if you translate that phrase into the native tongue of D:O, you get "Bytta Bort Kua Fikk Fela Igjen."
  11:04am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, thanks. In these uncertain times, I had guessed something like that, because Ab Baars's full name is there.

In these uncertain times, it is best that our typing be slowed down so we can realize the error of what we are writing.
  11:07am Marmoset:

Just use a bumper sticker, northguineahills.
Avatar 11:08am StringOFperils:

Bumper replacement. This is when the typewriter becomes the mechanic. Back to the roots.
  11:08am Dean:

Dvorak keyboard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Hey there, @northguineahills!
I think that other keyboard is Dvorak.
Hello, @Marmoset!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am doctorjazz:

Nice day out, took a nice (hard) hilly ride through Watchung Reservation yesterday. Feeling lazy now, may just do some nearby riding with the family later (if I ever get off the couch...). Have to trim the beard and get stuff ready for work tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Jeff Golick:

You have the necessary PPE, @doc?
Avatar 11:13am TDK60:

Oh, Dvorak. Don't know how well I could re-learn how to type, at least quickly enough to keep up on the comments board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Andrew Waterloo:

I already type faster than I can think
Avatar 11:15am northguineahills:

what's the lineup for Polyochard, new to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am chresti:

I'm a slow, pick n' peck level typist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Jeff Golick:

Polyorchard is Jeb Bishop & David Menestres.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am fred:

@doctorjazz: can't you just lie down and let Maxie handle the trimming?
  11:18am DJpeterDE:

@LG sage words. Funny that the keyboard is named Dvorzak, must be a story there. Funny because presumably the arrangement of letters takes specific languages in mind? But maybe all Romance languages are similar enough? (Don’t think Czech is a Romance language but I don’t know?) Where’s other Jeff?
  11:18am Listener Gregory:

The Notre Dame fire was just over a year ago. The National Gallery (US) posted some fantastic pictures of the cathedral from its archives, starting with long-distance views and going to photos of statuary and roof figures you never see: www.nga.gov... . Very worth a view in these uncertain times.
  11:18am Dean:

John Dvorak's uncle invented it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Jeff Golick:

Other Jeff is in Charlotte, NC.
Avatar 11:20am TDK60:

Chresti, I learned to type from an online course in an adult learning center. Called Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. It may be free online. I got up to mid-level I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Jeff Golick:

In these uncertain times, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing was the name of my first band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am chresti:

TDK60, thanks. Good time as ever, to learn how to actually use a keyboard.
  11:24am Dean:

Y'all know about the Bang on a Can Marathon today? https://marathon2020.bangonacan.org/

And BBC's Tectonic Rewind Weekend?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/5r29DccPp6y6nVRWbcjffsP/tectonics-rewind-weekend-2-3-may
  11:25am DJpeterDE:

Now that’s an entrance
  11:25am DJpeterDE:

Dean thanks!
  11:26am DJpeterDE:

I was invoking NC Jeff as a man of letters
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Andrew Waterloo:

In these uncertain times, you can watch a french RomCom called Populaire, about a woman competing in speed typing competitions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am doctorjazz:

@Fred-Maxie does a great job keeping the beard clean, haven't tried letting hey use the trimmer yet.
@Jeff-I'll find out tomorrow, we had to be careful with the limited amount we had back in March, hopefully it's a bit better now. I'll find out tomorrow...
  11:29am Listener Gregory:

@doctorjazz, in these uncertain times, I really wish you good luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Jeff Golick:

Ah, of course, @DJpeterDE. Bit slow on the uptake this morning. Just having my first cup, so.
  11:30am Listener Gregory:

Speaking of David Torn, did everyone see that Tim Berne just released a solo saxophone album on Bandcamp? Bought it, but haven't listened yet, due to the uncertainty and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Dave in Vermont:

Meredith Monk is the first piece in that Bang on a Can marathon!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for those links, @Dean. With all of the live streaming options, I'm starting to feel the same sense of missing out that I used to feel when not going to good shows in my area. So, cheers for familiarity?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am alanr:

the joy of the archive is listening later to everything I missed so far, as I was just now able to open the live stream. Exciting playlist to look forward too! Buenos días!
  11:31am Listener Gregory:

Like this Torn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Jeff Golick:

Wassup, @Dave in Vermont! Yo, and hola, @alanr!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I also picked up that Berne record, but tried the Torn first.
  11:34am Dean:

Same here. On top of the virtual live shows, I have access to Naxos Music Library's 150k+ disks, mostly classical.
Avatar 11:34am Franco Twinkie:

RW, Me too. can't quite function yet, but still working on the monsters, which somehow morphed into a comic about a couple of floundering lost souls.
  11:36am DJpeterDE:

I didn’t get the new Berne but did get all 5 Empire Box albums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Jeff Golick:

Given the size of Berne's discography, and his own Screwgun label, it's kind of remarkable he hasn't released a solo record before now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Stanley:

Hi Jeff. Thought I'd share something with you and this select group.
I had an epiphany last night, listening to the Grateful Dead 1977 Cornell University gig. To my utter surprise, I realised I absolutely loved them. I was tranfixed for the whole three hours. One of those occasional moments you get in one's listening life.
(Had to tell someone.)
  11:38am DJpeterDE:

Agreed Jeff, especially since Hemphill has more than one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Jeff Golick:

What a wonderful thing to experience -- and to share! I'm delighted to hear it, and to see you, @Stanley.
  11:38am DJpeterDE:

Agreed Jeff especially since Hemphill has more than one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Jeff Golick:

(@Stanley, you know who would thrill to hear that? Jeff Conklin, host of the Avant Ghetto show.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Jeff Golick:

STORK IST HERE: wfmu.org...
  11:42am Listener Gregory:

I heard Berne and Craig Taborn do a duo at the Rubin Museum in NYC, and it was fantastic. They kept laughing though, and there's no recording of their duo that I know of. We could use that, in these uncertain times, that's for sure.
  11:42am rw:

In these uncertain times, Franco I'm looking forward to seeing that one day! There's been talk of driving out to see the poppies today. That's not being irresponsible, is it? If we don't see anyone?
Avatar 11:43am Franco Twinkie:

Stanley, funny.huh? The Dead are like that. You stuff them in a drawer and forget about them and then BOOM! you hear something out of the blue and go Oh Yeah!
  11:43am rw:

I mean, come in contact with anyone. I'm sure there are a ton of people out there.
  11:44am DJpeterDE:

Guten tag Stork! (Maybe not Tag where you are)
  11:44am rw:

Have yet to experience the Dead BOOM myself. Though I haven't given up hope.
Avatar 11:45am StringOFperils:

@rw..I think it's still prudent to wear a mask, if you're going to be in a public place with other people who can't stay indoors any longer.
Avatar 11:45am Franco Twinkie:

I don't know! Last year people were stopping on the freeway to look at the poppies. Created quite a ruckus.
  11:45am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, in these uncertain times, I can't guess the drummer of this cut (Saft/Morris).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Jeff Golick:

I'm guessing it's Saft, but I haven't figured it out either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Stanley:

@Jeff - Really? That's great to know. I thought the Dead were not highly regarded by WFMU djs, in general.

@Franco - you're absolutely right. I was blown away.
Does any listener have an idea where I go from there to explore this new found enthusiasm?
  11:47am Dean:

Bandcamp says it's Morris.
Avatar 11:47am TDK60:

I think it's still /required/ to wear a mask in NYC.
  11:48am rw:

Stanley, I think Jesse Jarnow is also a pretty big fan. Jeff Conklin FOR SURE.
  11:49am DJpeterDE:

Stanley: early Allman Bros maybe? Less folky though
Avatar 11:49am TDK60:

In these uncertain times I'm finding it cheerful (in those rare days I venture out) to utter insults toward heads of govt. No one can really see who it is, only guess.
  11:50am DJpeterDE:

Or maybe you meant which Dead boots
Avatar 11:50am StringOFperils:

@tdk60...Generally, I expect irrational uncooperative nonsense from people at this point in history (these uncertain times). The law and justice, and social responsibility as well, seem like distant Platonic ideals or something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am fred:

@Stanley: Jeff Conklin's archives have a lot, and Dead shows must represent roughly 17% of the stuff at archive.org
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Wow, that Available Jelly is terrific. I'm stunned punless.
  11:51am Dean:

Uncle Michael loves the Dead.

If your first exposure to them is Cornell '77 and you don't already know Workingman's Dead, it's a must. But then so are the earlier albums. Live Dead?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am doctorjazz:

Feeling the same about keeping up with the various streams, Jeff.
Here's one tonight, Richard Thompson
www.royalalberthall.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Stanley:

Thanks rw. Two djs with shows running at the moment. Due to time differences, I'm not famiiar with them but I'm going to check them out.
Avatar 11:52am TDK60:

StringOFperils: Really, I do find most folks outside /are/ considerate. The morons just stand out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Jeff Golick:

Yeah Jarnow & Conlkin & UM will all play the Dead on the regular. @Stanley, do check them out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Jeff Golick:

@Doug, a date pun was why I played it, so you're covered.
  11:52am rw:

Oh, yeah. He's not a DJ but there's also Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Stanley:

Thanks Dean - my next stop.

@Jeff - and Uncle Michael too. Just goes to show you how ambivilant I've been about them until now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am chresti:

I always have something covering my face, mask, t-shirt sleeve, scarf, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

UM does often post live Dead recordings, so much is out there (think I could spend the rest of my life just catching up with them if anyone has issues with the Dead, point them to this album:
www.discogs.com...
(Of it's good enough for David Murray...)
Avatar 11:54am hyde:

thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Jeff, great show)
Good week all!
Avatar 11:55am TDK60:

In these uncertain times, I certainly have time to thank the disc jockey. Please wash your hands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am fred:

@Stanley: 14529 shows here: archive.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Stanley:

Thanks Jeff for being here again.

Thank you, too, dr j and fred.
  11:56am Listener Gregory:

Whoa! In these uncertain times, I lost track of the time. Thanks a lot for an excellent show, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am chresti:

Thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am fred:

Thanks Jeff!
Avatar 11:57am StringOFperils:

I was out on my bicycle yesterday SANS mask, and while I was stopped at a crosswalk a young fellow walked by and broadly sneezed into the open air right in front of me as he walked by, TWICE! Too many people just don't get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

The Stork Club is next here on your 24-hour Drummer Stream. Stork is here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am doctorjazz:

(Also Loved that Available Jelly, will need to Puck some up.
  11:58am rw:

Thank you JG! Take care and stay sane everyone in these uncertain times!
  11:58am Dean:

Just get the Ramboy catalog. Everything Moore does is wonderful. Add Clusone 3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Stanley and FMU folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am fred:

I always have a doubt when I hear about ICP: Instant Composer Pool or Insane Clown Posse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am alanr:

IRENE!!!!!!!
Avatar 11:59am StringOFperils:

Thanks you Jeff, for another lovely Sunday morning, and thank you other chat folks; you are wise and full of knowledge. Always a lot to learn here. Cheers to you all !
