Hello Photocopy Cha Cha! Hurrah! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm
StringOFperils:

Veronica Lodge or Betty Cooper ? Thoughts ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Veronica all the way. Veronica was coooool :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

Purkka might be the closest for bubblegum pop in my mother tongue (OK, it could be used with a lot of 70s stuff like Rubettes, Mud, Sweet etc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - there's *definitely* a link between bubblegum and glam :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

This music makes me ridiculously happy :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
StringOFperils:

Thanks for playing this, because I don't think I've listened to it, in any respectable fidelity at least, for many decades
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I hope you're having a bit of a dance too :-)

heyheyhey!! here with my bells on! the striped ones!
Ronnie Lodge was the grooviest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm

OK, this one is burned into my mind permanently in association with Monty Python. And The Simpsons of course (with Homer singing along while the Walkman's batteries die)

CC:

I never was much into bubblegum but I couldn't resist commenting on my favorite!!!...hehehe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I will confess now that I was firmly in the Osmonds camp. I mean, I watched The Partridge Family, but my loyalty was elsewhere ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - I shall convert you! Bwah ha ha ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
StringOFperils:

I think Donny Osmond and The Captain & Tenille made me embrace proto-metal for a while back in the early 70s
  5:15pm
CC:

Cheerz y'all... I will be quietly listening in the background for reference purposes..:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@5:09 DJ GeorgyGirl: well from The Simpsons & Monty Python you can see I was a 90s teenager - yes, Monty Python's Flying Circus was not shown here until early 90s in Finland (except for the first season from 1969 which was considered too weird here at the time, early 70s?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - lol!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - help yourself to beverages and candy ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm

the stream got dizzy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm

Again?? Ugh. Tell me if there are any more :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

As long as we don't get what happened last week, I'll be happy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
StringOFperils:

I listened to the archive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There were 43,000 homes without Internet in the UK last Monday. It was pretty big! I'm just happy it wasn't my fault ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

And I was not there, but apparently there was a Finnish radio program called Purkkaa ja Jytää - "jytä" could stand for hard rock of sorts, like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple etc. Sweet & Mud could be in both camps, maybe even the Osmonds with Crazy Horses! Jytä seems like a funny word for the native speaker, but apparently back then completely cool. And unfortunately a lot of non-prog popular rock music was apparently labelled Purkka, like CCR of all things! Now, the connection between CCR and bubblegum music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The lyrics to this song are highly questionable. lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Photocopy - I almost included The Osmonds. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

stream off again for a sec
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Crazy Horses is a hell of a track to be fair :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm

oh man, streamage....just when the double entendres were getting good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Does it go out for a long period or just momentarily?

DJ GeorgyGirl:

Every other device in the house is on flight mode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
StringOFperils:

Oh well, it's all good as they say. The maximum effort shine through !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
Rich in Washington:

It's really sporadic. I wouldn't worry about it terribly much. It doesn't detract from the wonderful mix.
Avatar 5:25pm
Linda Lee:

i'm sure it's not you, GG. remember when this happened all the time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

As long as you're all having a good time, that's the important thing :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
StringOFperils:

Everybody rock those air tambourines !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Ironically, I've just had to give up sugar. Lol! I couldn't have timed that better really ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
StringOFperils:

I dunno, Betty Cooper was kind of hot too, in her slow-burn kind of way.
Avatar 5:27pm
zivilars:

Good evening everybody – fantastic theme this week, thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

When I was putting this playlist together my daughter said "Of course now The Archies bubblegum persona has been completely destroyed with 'Riverdale'" :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi zivilars! :-)
Avatar 5:29pm
Linda Lee:

i've never seen 'riverdale', but i'd imagine it has no magic.
Avatar 5:29pm
zivilars:

@DJ GG: Missed the show last week, have to listen to it the archive, these two seem to be quite connected!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - its' super dark, like the rebooted Sabrina
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@zivilars - definitely a big sibling/little sibling pairing! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
StringOFperils:

I remember seeing th Lemon Pipers on TV on a Saturday afternoon music/variety show of some kind here in Canada back in the Jurassic or whenever that was. I remember them looking like Roy Wood's Wizard kinda sorta
Avatar 5:30pm
Linda Lee:

never saw that one either!
the Archies were magical ~ like the people in a dream. they weren't supposed to be 'realistic'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I shall have to look for that :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - I think I'd freak if I met someone who looked like Jughead in real life! lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember the hoopla in the 80s when Jughead went punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - that must have been a hell of a mohawk!
Avatar 5:33pm
Linda Lee:

so 'riverdale' is live action? not a cartoon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - yep :-) Both that and Sabrina are live actors and very dramatic. Bits of kind of dark humour but definitely dramas.
Avatar 5:34pm
Linda Lee:

that doesn't seem fun at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
StringOFperils:

Buddy Holly?!! Hmmm. That's a nomenclature stretch, really. The Crickets certainly appealed to teens, but they're well in the category of Texas rock n roll. Rave On is almost Bo Diddley. Music press (arts press) will say anything. The internet is worse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - by contrast, I *loved* the 90s Sabrina :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I genuinely had never heard that. I still don;t know what the connection is
  5:36pm
CC:

I never knew that this song was classified as bubble gum???
Avatar 5:36pm
Linda Lee:

dear me, i missed all of it! i do remember the Sabrina spinoff on Saturday morning, though, just before i left Bubble Gum Land forever ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@CC - yep! Possibly a Kasenetz/Katz? I'd have to check :-)
Avatar 5:37pm
Linda Lee:

that was 68 or 69, i think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - I have a vague memory of that, now you come to mention it!
Avatar 5:38pm
Linda Lee:

i had a few years on you, don't forget. but here's a question. you remember Tiger Beat? 16 Magazine? Bobby Sherman, the Monkees, Jack Wilde, Herman's Hermits? were those acts for a slightly older demographic than, say, the Banana Splits?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
Rich in Washington:

I can still hear the Sabrina The Teenage Witch theme song in my head
Avatar 5:38pm
Otis Fodder:

Literally eating banana, brownie, crumble, caramel ice cream at the moment and had 2 slight brainfreezes. Hi all!
Avatar 5:38pm
zivilars:

Was the 90s Sabrina the one with the fake as hell cat puppet? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - not sure. I'd say that Tiger Beat was probably catching the pre-teens as they turned into fully fledged teens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@zivilars - that's the one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
StringOFperils:

I am SURE that there are other, more credible, bubblegum forerunners than Buddy Holly. Bubblegum, I think, has fey elements that are part of its intrinsic character, and point therefore directly at GLAM. For that reason, I would cite Joe Meek, for instance, as being far more seminal (pardon the pun lads) in the history of bubblegum. Buddy Holly, can't see it.
Avatar 5:39pm
Linda Lee:

Otis! hi love!! here, have a hula hoop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Otis!!! Have some for me! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - definitely!!! More of a case for Joe Meek, like you say
Avatar 5:40pm
Linda Lee:

they sure had their demographics worked out tight didn't they?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I make no apologies for playing this song so much ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - oh absolutely! All tied in with merchandise and ads and goodness knows what else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
StringOFperils:

This is great. Don't know this. It's totally plastic, exploitative, cheap, and idiotic. What more could you want ?
Avatar 5:42pm
Otis Fodder:

Ice cream for all. Gin n Tonic too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I am completely in love with this track. I even have the t-shirt bookmarked for future purchase ;-)
Avatar 5:43pm
Linda Lee:

the Beatles were there for that, definitely. yes, real talent, but the marketing was phenomenal! the image.. then the merch. this is how a 4 year old child could become a full fledged Beatlemaniac!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Otis - we've bought Gin and Tonic ice-cream for my sister-in-law in the past :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
StringOFperils:

Ha ha. Wow. I admire your depth of commitment GG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@StringOFperils - I may need help ;-)
Avatar 5:44pm
Otis Fodder:

I am very happy I missed Candy Sugar Shoppe. I'm an odd duck, I like the Bunch's American Pie more than the original but for some reason that Candy song makes me want to tear sheets of paper (would totally do this) and kick small flowers (I would never ever do that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - best way to grab kids' money is through sugar ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Rich in Washington:

I think the 90s Sabrina (which I've never seen) had production people and writers from Mystery Science Theatre. I think Joel or his brother had something to do with special effects, including the cat puppet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Otis - it's super catchy but *highly* inappropriate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
StringOFperils:

that cat puppet was cool
Avatar 5:44pm
Linda Lee:

isn't it amazing how all this was musical! *everyone* had a band. was it just because they could market music along with everything else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - really???? I did not know that!!! That's awesome :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - pretty much. There was even a band for the Sugar Bears cereal! lol
Avatar 5:45pm
Linda Lee:

isn't it strange. the Banana Splits, the Buggles, the Groovy Ghoulies, the Archies, Josie & the Pussycats..
Avatar 5:46pm
Linda Lee:

not the Buggles, the Buggaloos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - Hello, small child, Give us your money. ;-)
Avatar 5:46pm
Otis Fodder:

I love the Bugaloos. Senses of our World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - I did have to read that twice. "The Buggles??" lol
Avatar 5:47pm
zivilars:

If I remember correctly Melissa Joah Hart tried to do a Kickstarter campaign for a Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboot a few years ago, but it seemed to have failed miserably ... :)
Avatar 5:47pm
Linda Lee:

the Buggles were an actual band, but a different one. didn't they do 'video killed the radio star'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@zivilars - she was *very* critical of the latest reboot as well.
  5:48pm

Hi Georgy and everyone! I love bubblegum!
Avatar 5:48pm

the Monkees were *definitely* bubble gum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm

@Linda Lee - they did indeed :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hello Elizabeth! :-)
Avatar 5:48pm

Avatar 5:49pm

those both can't be compared at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@zivilars - oh absolutely! No cutesy witches there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
StringOFperils:

@Linda Lee...The Buggles did have the hit with Video Killed The Radio Star BUT it came out about one year earlier, in an earlier form, by not quite the same band but almost :Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club. I like it as much, if not more, than the Buggles' version
Avatar 5:50pm
Otis Fodder:

GG - I was torn between 'baked ham and cheese loaf' and 'egg salad and bologna rolls' for my recipe card of the week... I'm going to go with 'frosted button cookies' which have sayings like 'do you dig it' and 'groovy' for the show tomorrow. Inspired by all this gum on my shoe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It took me decades to figure out that The Buggles were singing "we can't rewind".
I genuinely thought "country wind"? What the hell does that mean? lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Otis - YES!!! That's perfect :-) <3
  5:51pm
CC:

Hehehe... I guess I liked a lot of these I just never liked the label bubble gum???
Avatar 5:51pm

had no idea about the 'Radio Star'. just remember 10 or 15 songs at the start of MTV & that was one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm

@CC - Energetic Pop. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm

Has anyone ever read "Bubblegum is the Naked Truth" ? Great bubblegum resource!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Elizabeth - bits of it. It's very good :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm

The Turtles aren't *strictly* Bubblegum ... but I really like them and it's my show. lol ;-)
Avatar 5:53pm

here's another one: were Alvin & the Chipmunks bubble gum or something else?
Avatar 5:53pm
Otis Fodder:

For any fans of the book "Bubblegum is the naked truth" by Kim Cooper and pals, I go back to it often. If not, hip it'd be real peachy keen, dig, if you checked it out cause golly, it's a gas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
StringOFperils:

Even The Hollies could be recast as bubblegum, if you want to stretch definitions and get all anachronistic about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - definitely!!!! :-)
Avatar 5:54pm

@StringOFperils ~ so could the Mamas & the Papas..

Bubblegum is a fairly narrow row to hoe really, you can narrow it down a lot, by easilyy excluding these parallel forays into the hearts and wallets of kids with some pocket change

at least in the finnish version of baseball (Pesäpallo) the pitcher is in danger the most as s/he throws the ball upwards, opposite the hitter, very near and has to step back to avoid the bat. Peanuts was the reason I was into it, perhaps I was born a loser like Charlie Brown.

@Rich...Lou Reed, early on, worked at Pickwick Records, which was a kind of evolving cheap cash-in sort of label. I think he was inside a general movement toward cheap rock records for kids. His early stuff probably sounds similar for that reason.
