  10:14pm kym:

@ Carmichael: You're in Jax, no? I'm wondering if Wacko's Gentlemen's Club will survive. I'm dying to believe that it's actually a topless comedy club...

Avatar 10:16pm JakeGould:

And it’s still around. And if you remember Frank’s Lounge on Fulton, it recently closed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Handy Haversack:

Wait, Jake, Frank's closed? When?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm mariano:

My favorite was Between the Bridges, used to be the only bar in DUMBO and it was a dive. Got torn down in 2003 for a condo building, but according to the owner there'd been a bar at that spot continuously since the 19th century.

Jake: Yeah, I was seriously bummed to hear about Frank's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Heavy Chevy:

aye, hopefully Frank's is just closed temporarily?
  10:17pm Bill C:

I remember something called Liquid Love. I walked past it. Had a great sign.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm chresti:

Sandwiches is reminding me of Losing My Edge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Handy Haversack:

Smith Tavern at 5th Ave. and 9th St. is still the only tolerable place around that area.
Avatar 10:18pm JakeGould:

Nope. They sold the building and closed just before any of the Coronavirus stuff. eastnewyork.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Cooh John:

Are you a buckeye, Bill C?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm radioronan:

A lot of the good one are closing. hanks saloon, franks, the abbey in billyburg. Smiths aka smittys of 5th ave is good classic dive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Heavy Chevy:

Liquid Love is no longer but the bar Lunatico in bedstuy somehow procured their amazing signage and has it above their bar
Avatar 10:19pm JakeGould:

@Handy: That is not really a dive. More of an old school Irish bar kinda like the Carriage House on 7th.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Handy Haversack:

Whoa, the Abbey closed?! And Frank's? You guys are bringing me down!

Is all this COVID or did this happen before this all went down?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm mariano:

The Gate still open, speaking of Park Slope?
  10:20pm Bill C:

Yes Cooh, I am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Heavy Chevy:

Abbey's been closed for a while
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm radioronan:

Handy before covid..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, man, sad to lose Frank's. Loved that place.
Avatar 10:21pm JakeGould:

Frank’s was not Coronavirus: “The final day will be April 10, 2020, so get over there for your final drinks and photos with old friends. 660 Fulton Street, which housed the local bar and dance club was sold by the family and is closing after nearly three generations of operation in Fort Greene.”

So that means that they sold before they closed, just Frank’s closure was hastened by it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Cooh John:

What part?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Heavy Chevy:

wow. pouring one out for Frank's then. Hope they made some change on the sale.
Avatar 10:22pm Tootsiepop:

Luz intermitente, todo va estar bien
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Handy Haversack:

That metal bar on Marcy is still open, and so is the sports bar. Those are solid dives. Or they were open when I went to see Habibi at Market Hotel in Feb. and needed bars before and after.
  10:23pm Bill C:

That one in Red Hook. Tackle Shop or something? I remember it.
Avatar 10:23pm JakeGould:

FWIW, I used to work right on Hanson Place near Frank’s like 4 years ago; the whole neighborhood was kinda suffocating.

Avatar 10:25pm Tootsiepop:

Marty excelente set saludos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm mariano:

Man, I love how Sunny's has kept defying expectations. Over the almost 20 years I lived in Brooklyn there was more than one article on the imminent demise of Sunny's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Handy Haversack:

Irene's is just about the only divey place left in Gpoint. (Not contradicting you Jake -- typed before I saw your post. SV is good; just not ... a dive the way sometimes you want a dive.) Solid local and Polish place. Montero's on Atlantic I think is still going.
  10:27pm ?:

Hey mb: Ain't no party like the West Coast party
  10:27pm kym:

@ Carmichael Sorry! I thought you were in Florida. Didn't mean to reference Wacko's to one who hasn't beheld it's bizarre signage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm mariano:

Montero's been there since the 30s or 40s I think. Apparently was a sailor dive when the waterfront was busier commercially.
  10:27pm Bill C:

I was in Freddy’s but I think the basketball arena took it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Handy Haversack:

@Bill C: It moved south a ways. Still solid.
Avatar 10:29pm JakeGould:

@Handy: Oh! Montero's! It is still there and still technically a dive, but when I lived near there I would occasionally go there, have a drink, the place is dead quite and then some of the rich d-bags who moved into the neighborhood would have their “Let’s get drunk on our bachelor/bachellorette night!” there and the place was insufferable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Handy Haversack:

Kate's played at Freddy's. It's not as cheap as it was in the old place, but it's solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Cooh John:

Thanks for the info, guys. Hope I can check out of your suggestions out next year.
  10:29pm Bill C:

Can’t wait to visit again sometime. Montero’s sounds interesting.
Avatar 10:30pm JakeGould:

@BillC: Yeah, the stupid arena had the building torn down, but they moved into Park Slope South on 5th Avenue and is still a decent place. In fact I will say — as long as they survive this shut down — they are the best divey bar to get to in that part of Brooklyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm radioronan:

Freddy's is still around but they moved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Heavy Chevy:

Avatar 10:33pm JakeGould:

BillC: You remember O’Connor’s on 5th and Jackie’s 5th Amendment as well?
  10:35pm CC:

I was just thinking...when there ain't nobody left to fire... you might as well quit?!?
  10:35pm Bill C:

O’Connors yes! Not familiar with the other one. I try to hit them when I stay in Manhattan. Bars and writing about them are kind of a hobby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Handy Haversack:

@Jake (10:29): Yeah, the chock-full-of-assholes surges are a borough- (city-?) wide problem. My circle of tolerable bars in Gpoint keeps shrinking.

Brew Inn, while small, actually has a nice feel sometimes -- and has a $3 pint!
  10:37pm Bill C:

Someone recommended the Alibi to me but I never made it. Still around?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Cooh John:

Where in Ohio, Bill C?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Handy Haversack:

Jimmy's Corner near Times Square is a surprisingly wonderful place.
Avatar 10:39pm JakeGould:

@BillC: Well… They are both gone! Long gone actually. Most of 5th Avenue in Park Slope is disturbingly gentrified from what I recall even in the early 1990s. But Freddy’s is just past the Prospect Expressway so the area is still “real” or whatever.
  10:39pm Bill C:

Little town on the Ohio River south of Steubenville.
Avatar 10:39pm JakeGould:

@Handy: Rudy’s Bar and Grill is still the best divey place in Hell’s kitchen.

Yeah, Rudy's is SOLID. But also definitely has chock-full-of-assholes surges. Do you know the Duck at 112th and 2nd Ave. in Manhattan?
  10:41pm Agent Peter:

Milano's has been gone for years, I am sorry to report. Thought they owned the building but they didn't. Has gone the way of Nick & Eddie's

  10:45pm Bill C:

I’m glad I got to see Mars Bar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Handy Haversack:

Hell yeah, Marty. This is a set and a half!

@javakid, Mars was a place I took Kate as soon as she came to NYC. RIP.

@radioronan: Never! Not once in 21 yrs! WTH? Will rectify. But we did have a friend who lived right above it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm mariano:

Mars Bar! There was one up the avenue for a while called The Hole, never had any signs or anything calling attention to itself. Total anything-goes place, don't know who they were paying off to stay open.
  10:46pm ECri:

Oh Man.... Favorite song! Free.....
Avatar 10:47pm JakeGould:

For anyone reading this who has not been to NYC in a while or is nostalgic for a NYC of the past, pretty much all of the real dive bars in NYC are gone. And the few that remain are very scattered. And Coronavirus closures only amplify it.

My advice is these are really the only remaining “dive” kinda places I hope survive this all:

• Irish Haven (Sunset Park)
• Freddy’s (South Slope)
• Capri Social Club (Greenpoint)
• Soccer Tavern (Sunset Park)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm mariano:

How about Kokie's? I know it's long gone, but that place was a trip.
  10:48pm Bill C:

The diviest dive I was in in Manhattan was called the Holland. Amazing. The owner was there and he fired the bartender and rehired her before I finished my 3 drinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Handy Haversack:

  10:49pm CC:

Marty..!..Cheerz buddy!!!!
Avatar 10:49pm JakeGould:

Anyone remember Siberia? The one in the train station and then the one next to Port Authority. All gone, but hey… Those were dives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Handy Haversack:

Marty, I don't know if I have ever made quite clear to you how much Kate loves this show. We used to watch movies on Sat. night until there was a string when she was out doing stuff and I was listening and then she listened once.

Now it's like, what the fuck is a movie, anyways.

Totally, @Jake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm mariano:

At Kokie's you could buy coke in the back, $20 bags. Guaranteed headache, but it was a stop on the late-night circuit if you couldn't get a hold of your guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Cooh John:

Thanks, JakeGould. Always a great source of information.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm radioronan:

I have a framed photo of the mars bar bathroom. Not sure what that says about me. Oh kokie's. how was that legal? My fave in these hoods was sweetwater back when it was a punk bar. Once it turned into a bisto I knew it was doomed. Yes, Siberia. I had a friend that bartended there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Handy Haversack:

@mariano, yeah, Kokie's. Kate waited tables at Teddy's for about 6 years, partly before Kokie's was gone.

Anyone ever love the Sweetwater in Wburg?
  10:52pm Bill C:

Definitely Jake. Thanks

Yes, Sweetwater! Across from Galapagos. Sweetwater had an amazing jukebox.

Ha! radioronan! Yeah, man! That was our place. Our bars were Sweetwater in Wburg and Bar 81 in Manhattan. God, I miss Bar 81. A second home.
  10:54pm Bill C:

Is the Narrows still around?
Avatar 10:55pm JakeGould:

I heard about Kokies. But never went. Sweetwater was great as well… And R.I.P. Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern…

That Rosemary’s lasted longer than expected and was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Handy Haversack:

Word, Jake.
Avatar 10:56pm javakid:

Bar 81 - Many many nights there. Veteran of the EV pool table circuit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm mariano:

There was the Blarney Stone in Midtown, a real holdout from the old days. On 3rd Ave around 45th. Only reason I know it is because I had an ongoing freelance gig in the area and used to get my (incredibly cheap) lunch from there. The inside could've been a Tom Waits album cover, looked like they hadn't done anything to the place since the 70s. The hardcore daytime drinkers, TV always tuned to the horse races, and a pretty damn good burger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Handy Haversack:

Hell, javakid, we probably played each other. I was on the Bar 81 league team for a few years, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Mr. Pumpy:

Marty! 'Allo! I'm a huge slacker on the accu lately. I was on a zoomity zoom call with much loved peeps for hours. I needed it! Looks like I missed a lot. Thanks for delivering the goods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm chresti:

I only know of Jumbos Clown Room, Smog Cutter..
Avatar 10:57pm JakeGould:

Midtown — Murray Hill, Turtle Bay and Kip’s Bay areas — are still weirdly like visiting “Odd Couple” Manhattan. And there are still definitely some old school bars trapped in time there. But I dunno about most of them.
Avatar 10:58pm javakid:

@Handy I played out of Barfly (on 20th) for forever but played a ton at Joe's, Sophie's, and The Edge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Mr. Pumpy:

Hello to everyone. It's a beautiful thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm ParUbi:

Hi Mr. P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm mariano:

Hey Mr. Pumpy!
  10:58pm Bill C:

@Chresti. Jumbo’s in LA. Been there.
  10:58pm Agent Peter:

@Bill C
9th Ave used to have loads of dives. Ever go to the Shannon Star?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, that place still has some. I know the Blarney Stone, mariano.

@javakid, I played out of Barfly for a year also! I worked around the corner for a year or so. Would have been around 2000, 2001.

Hey, Mr. P!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Mr. Pumpy:

Par, mariano...what up?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Mr. Pumpy:

Siberia was in the 50th Street IRT Station, on the downtown side.

Agent Peter, is it still there? Never been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm radioronan:

@handy yeah we definitely must have run into each other.
Iona's was good the first few years before the hood changed. Yabby's and aformentioned Abbey were where I was hanging out.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm ParUbi:

What are some features of a dive bar? low lighting? sticky floor?
Avatar 11:01pm javakid:

@Handy - you play with either Billy or Jimbo - they were the main captains. In 2000 and 2001 I actually had a team far from BF but it was my local on weekends.
  11:01pm Bill C:

I liked the one that guy from the Dictator’s owned. Ate at an all night Greek place called the Odyssey that evening. Amazing what you remember.
Avatar 11:01pm JakeGould:

@AgentPeter: Yup! The one with the bathroom with a hole in the wall next to one of those shoe repair places.

And you know what? The Safdie Brother’s should do a film about all of this shoe repair places that exist in creepy nooks in midtown. What a career that must be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, ParUbi, coela!
  11:02pm Agent Peter:

Bill - It's been gone for ages. Would go either there or the Coliseum Bar a lot. Coliseum renovated (moving the bar to the opposite side) and has closed for good within the last year or 2.
  11:02pm Carmichael:

@Handy, you had me at $3 pint!

Nancy Whiskey is a classic Irish song and great pub name!
Avatar 11:02pm JakeGould:

@ParUbi: That’s a whole other discussion. Many of the places mentioned here are/were definitely not dives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm Handy Haversack:

@Agent Peter, oh, I still miss the old Coliseum! I still work right over there.

More on Manitoba’s: “With the bar closing, there’s a sadness. It was my clubhouse, and the clubhouse isn’t there. And it’s the real end of my relationship with Little Steven after 40 years. He lost so much money, and he was getting madder and madder at me.”

  11:06pm Carmichael:

I kinda miss my local boozer, where the bartender would say “f*ck yeah!” whenever I order a shot of Paddy and a pint. And the young gay dude who constantly hits on me until I tell him to go f*ck himself. Good times ...

Yeah, after Handsome Dick Manitoba
3 of Cups is gone. Library might still be around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Handy Haversack:

Otto's and Mona's both still going over in the E. Village.
Avatar 11:07pm JakeGould:

Ahhh… “Emerald Pub” was on Spring Street and was the bar Teri Garr and Griffin Dunne met in in “After Hours.”

8th/9th ave Molly Wee. The bar under port authority on 9th with the really horrible lighting. Billymark's is still good . Love Mona's. Otto's. Some day we will be able to go back to bars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Handy Haversack:

I have never really been to LA, chresti, but I have this totally romantic notion of old-school LA bars from like Chandler stories that I am scared to have crushed by reality!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm mariano:

LA has Club Silencio, that says a lot for a place.
  11:12pm Agent Peter:

Used to live pretty much right above Billymark's.

Anyone ever venture uptown? The Irish Brigade was a magical spot. Like the freakin' Twilight Zone in there.
Avatar 11:12pm Marty McSorley:

Ha, nice, chresti!
Avatar 11:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Bill C, King Eddy is on Los Angeles Street? I have never been inside, but I was driving by when two guys were painting the sign on the glass. Old school stylee with One Shot!
  11:14pm Agent Peter:

Across the street from Molly Wee was the Garden Tavern, which was always chock full of drunk FIT girls. One of the owners went back to Ireland, the other stayed and renovated. Is Tempest Bar now. Nobody's mentioned McManus?

I was in one in Harlem called Touch of Dee. Had to ring a buzzer

  11:16pm Bill C:

Franco, not sure of the street but downtown not far from Skid Row
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Handy Haversack:

Summer of 1999 I waited tables at Cloister Cafe in the E. Village. Would usually stop at Bar 81 for a few McSorleys and some pool before going in. After work, I'd either go back there to collect the friends I had left there 8 hours before and have a few more or go to Telephone with Irish kids and pull the shades down. Then get home at 9 the next morning.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Handy Haversack:
