I remember on a trip to NYC in 1996, I went to meet a friend of mine at CBGBs to see The Swinging Neckbreakers. On the walk there I found $50. It seemed like a message from the Gods, and took care of the evening as you can well imagine.

Tennessee Ernie's "I Love Lucy" appearances may be among the finest guest star turns in television history. "That IS a Long Island."
  1:50pm Papito:

Charo was the Coochi Coochi Girl and she appeared on The Merv Griffin Show ! Oh Mamita !
  1:50pm ?:

If you spent any time around central or southern Mississippi in the early '90s, you'd be very familiar with Tom Lester - as his Eb character, no less - hawking vinyl siding for the Jackson, MS-based Leadco company. They'd show an afternoon movie, heavily edited for television, with Tom as Eb in very frequent interruptions so excited about the vinyl siding deals on offer, that he'd do the "Leadco shuffle." It was something else. (For a time, Tom was joined by Donna Douglas, playing - and dressed as - her Beverly Hillbillies "Elly May" character. This didn't last long; I've always assumed the lawyers came calling on that one.)

The internet tells me that Jerry Clower was the initial Leadco pitchman, but that was before my time.
  1:52pm mr_donutsu:

Just as one would expect!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Pedro in Arlington:

And to note, if he had been born a few blocks north, he would have been "Virginia Ernie Ford." The house is a quick walk from where Ralph Peer and Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family got it on wax in 1927.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm dave wuz here:

whatever donna douglas is selling i'll take 12
  1:56pm ?:

Papito - I'm the Question Mark - a longtime Fool's Paradise/WFMU listener that's never posted here before, but I've been listening, and I thought someone out there might be interested in hearing about Tom Lester's career twilight, especially since it's not information you'd find on the internet.
  1:57pm davefromtoronto:

what's with all the dave's in here today...
  1:58pm Papito:

  1:59pm ?:

Dave wuz here - 12 sets of vinyl siding for your home would be a pretty pricey proposition. The best part of Donna Douglas's brief presence is that she was full-on Elly May. Short shorts, tight shirt, holding a rabbit and whistling - just about 30 years older.
  1:59pm egould310:

KWPX is now going to be in my radio listening rotation.
  2:00pm David in London:

mr_donutsu, good link. It reminds me of the radio station in Twin Peaks s3e8. Gotta light?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Handy Haversack:

How's Saturday afternoon treating you, David in London?
  2:04pm David in London:

Hey Handy. Well, after a burst of tedious but necessary housework, I spent the afternoon reading in the garden in the sunshine. I’m now cracking open the beers and distributing the roasted almonds. So status report: very satisfactory. How’s things in Greenpoint?
  2:04pm P-90:

Now I feel deprived for never having seen these Leadco siding ads...
  2:07pm Don F.:

Love when you go NOLA, Rex!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Handy Haversack:

Good to hear, David!

We have a warm and slightly sunny day at last -- so the unmasked are crowding the streets. I had an uncomforatble walk. But a little time in the back garden after lunch was pleasant. Aimed the hop vines upward and filled the bird feeders. Started getting the yuppies in the new bldgs. behind us accustomed to some schlock and bop. Caught between working for the rest of the afternoon or relaxing ...

  2:31pm davefromtoronto:

gaylord must've heard the sess stimulla spot...
  2:32pm mr_donutsu:

I was working at The Landsberg Company (Jaws 3 3D, That’s Incredible, etc) as a delivery driver back in 86 when Charo came in to talk about some show in development.

I was sitting there in the back room (where us flunkies hung out waiting for something to do) when she and her handler came storming through towards the exit to the parking lot. She was quite agitated, talking a mile a minute.

“Bad meeting! Very bad people! ...”

And that’s why we never got our late 80s Charo sitcom variety special reality show.
Avatar 2:33pm StringOFperils:

One morning along about four bells, I am standing in front of Mindy's restaurant on Broadway with a guy by the name of Regret, who has this name because it seems he wins a very large bet the year the Whitney filly, Regret, grabs the Kentucky Derby, and can never forget it, which is maybe because it is the only very large bet he ever wins in his life.
What this guy's real name is I never hear, and anyway makes no difference to me, especially on Broadway, because the chances are that no matter what name a guy has, it is not his square name. So, as far as I am concerned, Regret is as good a name as any other for this guy I am talking about, who is a fat guy, and very gabby, though generally he is talking about nothing but horses, and how he gets beat three dirty noses the day before at Belmont, or wherever the horses are running.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Threemoons:

Greetings Rex, fellow Fools...
  2:43pm longish:

Stunning that Rex nailed the pronunciation of Sequim, WA as “skwim”. Most non-Northwesterners say “see-kwim”. A regular phoenetic anthropologist, that fella Rex.
  2:44pm Jim V:

Anyone else get the "No Brow" tune playing in their head once a day or so?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Handy Haversack:

There's a good Mexican place in Sequim. Delish.
