Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Gord's recording and playing around again, after disappearing for a while in the 80s. Saw his first public outing in the early 90s, at the Mariposa Folk Festival, on a foot-high outside stage. Sat at his feet. He was scared shitless about playing, shaking like a leaf. He's fine now. Old and sober. But playing again.

Thanks Marie!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

Jared's band, The Lunar Laugh, has a new single out TODAY.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm efd:

oh boy, this is bringing back memories of the few years I spent doing weekends on a "modern rock"/"alternative" station in the early/mid-90s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

Evan! No shit?
Avatar 2:13pm Mu Major:

Yeah, haven't heard this since the days of CanCon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm efd:

well some of the music was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm doctorjazz:

Like this Crash Test Dummies track...another of those bands I know of, but haven't actually heard.

An ode to T.S. Eliot

"Stream suspended for policy violations" on YT?
  2:20pm rw:

Good morning! I just now realized the lyric is “hairline” not “airline”.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Nice Mama.
  2:21pm johnk77:

youtube still working here
@um just ate a snack;>
  2:21pm Dean:

Now I'm seeing a test pattern.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

Youtube experiment is OVAH!
  2:23pm Dean:

Which policy might you have violated, hmmm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

uh oh, it was cool while it lasted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm efd:

copyright violation, I'm guessing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm listener 126464:

Tom Petty© policy?
  2:25pm Dean:

I know an attorney at YT. Is he going to get a good talking to!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

Evan wins the prize. Yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Uncle Michael:

I need to work on my chops. No doubt about it.
  2:28pm Listener Robert:

efd, UM, think that was a 'bot at YouTube that picked up a copyright notice off a file or DVD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Listener Scott:

Copyright holders set bots to automatically trigger takedowns. Humans aren't even involved. A yoga instructor friend was doing a class on YT live and got taken down b/c Billie Eilish could be heard in the background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm doctorjazz:

Nice interview/music sequence, thanks, Jared!
  2:30pm Listener Robert:

Because of course YouTube doesn't know about things like RIAA's licensing the content -- which I assume to include all media, not just the WFMU main stream and air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

I can't swear that streaming the show over YT is kosher. I didn't think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

And hi, Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm efd:

it's different licenses. A license to broadcast over the air or online doesn't cover streaming that same content on YouTube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

Live and learn. I'm not usually naive...but there ya go.
Avatar 2:34pm hyde:

i've seen stuff on YT get taken down like a violinist playing a clearly hundreds of years old public domain song but it gets flagged because the bots can't tell the difference between a rando violin player and some recording of the same tune that is actually still under copyright
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Uncle Michael:

How are people doing live DJ sets all over YT, I wonder.
Avatar 2:34pm burke:

Video killed the internet star
  2:35pm Marie:

TODD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm efd:

I've seen people complaining about their sets being shutdown on YT or Insta. I think it depends on how mainstream/current the music being played is, though as hyde noted the methodology for automatically identifying that content is not foolproof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Uncle Michael:

I guess I'll use my channel for a bird-feeder-cam.
Avatar 2:38pm Little Danny:

Our cats would in tune in.
  2:39pm Dean:

You'll probably get a C&D from an attorney for the birds.
Avatar 2:39pm hyde:

love this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Asheville Jon:

lovin' the Nesmith!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

hyde, this is one of Jared's selections, cut for time....and fit back in. I won't steal his thunder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Listener Scott:

Hi UM!

re Hyde's comment, yeah, YT risks nothing by preemptively taking down works, irrespective of legit public domain defenses that might be present. They'd prefer to keep rights holders happy than find a middle ground. The bots should be able to distinguish between performance of a public domain work (for which a valid but thinner copyright exists) and the underlying work itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

Jon!
Avatar 2:40pm hyde:

@UM anyway we get Nesmith is OK by me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Asheville Jon:

hey UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Uncle Michael:

Scott, I think I got legitimately busted...and am chastened.
Avatar 2:43pm Little Danny:

Nice Dead selection. Great sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Listener Scott:

Many (most?) WFMU shows could probably be aired over YT without triggering a bot but I'd guess a typical UM show would have 1 or 2 tracks that would.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Uncle Michael:

I'm not steering clear of the hits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm doctorjazz:

Thanks for Jerry and the boys! Nice to hear him working those vocal cords (more than he usually does)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Listener Scott:

I didn't see the YT, but if you were merely simulcasting your show, you could transmit no sound to the YT feed, since it's merely supplementing the WFMU feed. People listening and watching here don't need sound coming out of both sources.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm doctorjazz:

And, as LD noted, the sound is quite good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm efd:

Listener Scott makes a good point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Uncle Michael:

The Fillmore West box set is fucking great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm doctorjazz:

Also missed the YT feed, will try for it if you did it again (though I'm perfectly content with just the audio!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

It was a fun experiment. Might be a complete one-off. Who knows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm doctorjazz:

Have to check if I have that (have more stuff than I can keep track of these days)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, I could do it silently. There would be no sync, but so what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm doctorjazz:

Wonder what Reverend Gary Davis would think...
Avatar 2:52pm Little Danny:

By the way UM I successfully used OBS & twitch last night for my show's video stream, all thanks to your suggestion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm doctorjazz:

Been watching the CSN (Y) doc, not bad...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Uncle Michael:

I'm glad that worked, Danny. OBS is an amazing, free tool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm doctorjazz:

Hearing lots that sounds mono (like Carry On).
  2:54pm dan:

Here’s another song that Commercial Radio totally purged.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm doctorjazz:

No, the guitar does break to the right, but still...
Avatar 2:55pm Little Danny:

Indeed re: OBS. I still want some way to create itunes-like playlists of videos that I can play on demand, but I think it can be done.
  2:55pm Marie:

questions of a thousand dreams--love this part of this song
Avatar 2:55pm Little Danny:

CSN's set has become the highlight of the Woodstock doc for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm doctorjazz:

Odd mix, though, almost all centered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Doug Schulkind:

CSN was the center of my musical world for more than a minute.
Avatar 2:56pm Little Danny:

I love these early CSN tracks with the swirly organ
  2:56pm Marie:

Hey Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm listener 126464:

Thanks Uncle Michael and Jared.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Uncle Michael:

That stuff still sounds so good to me. None of the cultural baggage will ever spoil it for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Great set, great show, thanks Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm spodiodi:

Thanks for the show, UM! Thanks, Jared!

thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

Geez, Dolly is making me happy/weepy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for spending the time with me, everyone!
Avatar 2:58pm burke:

Youtube's loss is our gain. Thanks UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm doctorjazz:

Now this really uses the stage (that's what happens when I can listen at home- I geek out).
Thanks, UM, great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Guido from Cologne:

Thanks Michael!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm doctorjazz:

Great guitar!
  3:00pm dan:

Great show as usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Listener Scott:

Thanks, UM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Webhamster Henry:

@Little Danny - you might be able to line up your tracks in VLC, pipe the audio into OBS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

KevinfromBayRidge: yay! the postcard project has been such a joy for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Webhamster Henry:

The one-two punch of Dolly Parton & Mama Cass have exhausted you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm doctorjazz:

Thinking of going back to VLC, had it for a while, been using JRiver for a while but it's giving me trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, UM! Delightful show today!
Avatar 3:02pm Little Danny:

@WH: Thanks, I'm using OBS in combination with VLC. I'll try your suggesion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Webhamster Henry:

There are plug-ins for OBS, I haven't investigated too much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Webhamster Henry:

Thanks Michael! it had both kinds of music: Hinky AND Dinky.
