Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

So cool! Trombone seems like it was built for experimentation, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, Dave and Jen and Freeworld faithful!
Avatar 2:11pm Sem:

Sliding in feet first! Hey, Dave, and free worlders up for straddling something weird, something delirious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Dave Sewelson:

ParUbi and Doug and Sem are in the same room
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Today's guest is the drummer from Cream? <* squints, turns up volume *> Oh, _Jen_ Baker! Welcome to WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm doctorjazz:

Hi Dave, Jen, and peoples!
Avatar 2:15pm Franco Twinkie:

Ha! Good one Ken. I wonder if she can play Toad on that thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm chresti:

She probly can play it backwards too, Franco
Avatar 2:18pm fred:

Has Jen heard of Maria Bertel? She's an experimental trombone player from Denmark (and part of Selvhenter)

Dave, I always thought you were some jazzer from the Lower East Side, now I find out you're from Oakland! Did you frequent Dream Fluff Donuts back in the day?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Dave Sewelson:

Biff's
  2:29pm jenbaker:

Hi Fred! No haven't heard of Maria, but I bet there's some really great experimenting going on in Denmark!
  2:34pm Alf from Upstate:

What a coincidence, I've often been called an unexpected little prick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Jen Baker's music has been heard on Give the Drummer Radio before. A little over a year ago, a performance of TILT Brass, including Baker, was aired on Ridgewood Radio: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm coelacanth∅:

hello Dave, Jen and Free-ish worldlings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Jen, have you run into listener Lyle on the trombone circuit? He occasionally checks in with interesting tales from the road. Like at 5:36 here: freeform.wfmu.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Today is one month of beard growth for me, Dave. Feels itchy sometimes, especially when wearing a mask. So far, so good, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Dave Sewelson:

do nothing and wait Ken
  3:19pm Dean:

Please tell me Jen has 75 trombone playing friends and a parade permit.
Avatar 3:20pm fred:

Unfortunately, music research institutions are getting hit hard financially (I still get paid, but furloughs look more likely than not in the near future). Grants were already few, it will get worse. The healing angle could help though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm doctorjazz:

I love this (bones combine amazingly).
  3:23pm jenbaker:

I'd also do a deep dive into sound healing research - even more so at this point in time! I don't have any idea where to start with finding funding...this kind of thing seems so out of reach for someone without university backing!
Avatar 3:28pm WR:

We are ready.
  3:30pm Dean:

I use Pivot to find funding organizations, but it's a database licensed to a university.

GrantForward looks like a promising free resource: https://www.grantforward.com

National Council of Nonprofits: https://www.councilofnonprofits.org/download-grants-research-tools-chart

grants.gov?

I'm finding results for "music therapy," but not for "sound healing."
Avatar 3:31pm fred:

@Jen: I'm in the EU so it's obviously different, but here it seems the best shot is to hook up with a neuroscience team. Many are open to studying sound healing. I think my workplace (a research/music thing in France called IRCAM) has had success getting grants for uses of music and sound for therapy or to ease patient anxiety
Avatar 3:37pm fred:

Anyway the neuroscience/music/medicine field seems to be a real thing, with papers in serious conferences and journals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Dave Sewelson:

thanks Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Dave Sewelson:

WR is really ready
  3:39pm Chad Fowler:

I really love this When A Drop of Light piece. Listened to it once earlier today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm doctorjazz:

That was cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm doctorjazz:

Off to bike for a bit, thanks!
Avatar 3:51pm WR:

Don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain. Lean back and absorb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Gina Bacon:

Happy Saturday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Dave Sewelson:

Yeah Gina!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Dave Sewelson:

good to see you Chad
Avatar 4:06pm fred:

@Jen: I found this list of somewhat related labs: apcsociety.org...
Not a complete one by any means (I'm pretty sure McGill in Montreal has something). Many of these labs will be eager to write proposals with healing in the title in the coming months. And I'd guess some, maybe most, would be genuinely interested
Avatar 4:18pm fred:

I think Lea Bertucci recorded in an abandoned grain elevator a few years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh this is fantastic. I know it's because I'm aware of the farm connection, but I'm hearing cows.
  4:19pm jenbaker:

<3 <3 <3 glad you hear the cows!
Avatar 4:30pm WR:

Yes, happy I decided to go to headphones for listening.
  4:30pm David J:

Tuning in very late today! I’ll have to catch the beginning in the archives!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Greetings, Dave and WFMU pals!
  4:39pm jenbaker:

Ken - which track at 5:36?
  4:42pm jenbaker:

Hey thanks for mentioning the cans - meant to say it's def a piece for headphones or surround speakers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Gina Bacon:

This is really cool and beautiful.
Avatar 4:45pm fred:

@Jen: Ken was referring to a comment posted at 5:36, not a track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm doctorjazz:

Back from the ride, liking Silo Songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm doctorjazz:

Works well on plain old speakers on stereo.
Avatar 4:51pm WR:

doctorjazz, can't imagine that you speakers are "plain", you are a discerning listener.
Avatar 4:51pm Sem:

Glorious things on the radio. Glad to be along to hear them. Much obliged, Dave, Jen.
  4:52pm jenbaker:

Thanks all!! Love the comments!
