Monsieur Doumani: Edgy New Roots Music From Cyprus, Recorded at WOMEX 2019

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop‑up player!

The politically outspoken Cyprus-based trio Monsieur Doumani blends traditional influences with contemporary elements, both musical and topical. They've certainly struck a chord: The band's latest album Angathin topped the Transglobal world music DJ chart, they've won critics' awards in Italy and Germany and three award nominations from UK-based Songlines magazine. And they showcased at October's influential WOMEX World Music Expo in Finland. Join us on Saturday for Rob's interview with Monsieur Doumani and their WOMEX EBU radio studio session!

Check out Monsieur Doumani's excellent third album Angathin as well as their earlier releases Sikoses and Grippy Grappa: https://monsieurdoumani.bandcamp.com/

Here's a link to the Arts Covid Big List/ – an extensive list of Relief and Resources For Artists, Freelancers, and Non-Profits: http://artscovid.org/

Also: BRIC has created a great resource list for artists during the viral crisis:

How the Arts and Culture Sector Can Prepare for the Coronavirus in the United States

As we take heightened precautions to support public health initiatives, including temporarily closing our doors, we want to maintain our unwavering support of the artistic and creative community and ensure that you continue to thrive. To that end, we have compiled a list of shared resources from local and national arts and culture organizations.

These resources offer assistance, such as financial support and opportunities for artists to continue to express their creative potential during these difficult times. They should not be mistaken for public health information distributed by city and state authorities.

In the coming days and weeks, finding ways to support one another will become especially crucial. At BRIC, we reaffirm our commitment to support visual artists, performers, and media makers as we unite Brooklyn through art and creativity, together, to build community and make change. We hope you will find the links below to be of use to you and your creative community as we all navigate the impact of the novel Coronavirus/COVID-19.

We will continue to add new links and resources over the coming weeks. Please check our blog for updates, or follow BRIC on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @bricbrooklyn.

Sounding excellent DJ, digging this Ensemble Si Nuan Thung Pong, glad to be tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Rob W:

Thanks barba yiorgi - we have an acoustically sound apartment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Rob W:

Thanks Zydeco Phil! The Okinawan traditional music and the big neo-folk movement and folk / crossover movement there is quite interesting. There's a British writer named Paul Fisher who has an online shop called Farside which is a good English-language source on the music. He used to write for fRoots magazine (now defunct) and also does a show on Resonance FM in London, at least I think he still does...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Smilty69:

Nice selection of songs, Rob. I’m BBQ’ing to them in front of skeptical neighbors. If you play Tuvan I’m blasting the volume to 11.
  6:49pm Telecommie PDX:

Hey Big Brother, weeding in the garden & digging the show. Miss youse guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Rob W:

Thanks Smilty69! Oh man I don't have any Tuvan music coming up although it would have been a good fit. But we're getting into the Monsieur Doumani / music of Cyprus session soon and then the last hour will be my belated Manu Dibango tribute + a little tribute to another African music who we've lost, Arlus Mabele.
  6:51pm Marie:

This song is perfect, to me, for these times, this song--this style of music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Rob W:

Greetings little brother. I am glad we are not responsible for weeding our back yard. We'll see you in PDX when the smoke clears! (Listeners, have no fear, I always bring back music for the show from PDX too!)
  6:52pm Marie:

More Indian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Rob W:

Thanks Marie! Music from Rajasthan is really special indeed. The musicians all come from a musician caste, the history is complicated, they have faced lots of discrimination through the centuries, but the music is wonderful. And yes, it is kind of a nice vibe for the moment. Actually won't be getting to more Indian music today because the show is pretty set, but you might like a session I recorded in Europe this past fall with musicians from Rajasthan, master fiddler Lakha Khan and his son, it's here: wfmu.org... . Thanks!
  7:01pm Carmichael:

Looking forward to the tribute songs.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Handy Haversack:

How's the day off, Carmichael?
Avatar 7:06pm TDK60:

Just back from the nightly 2-minute noise out the window in appreciation of all frontline workers out there. It's getting louder each night!, more pots & pans along with applause, shouts. I play my guitar.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm chresti:

That's great TDK60.
  7:10pm Carmichael:

Great, Handy. A couple of Sierra Nevadas deep.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm radioronan:

Getting louder every night here in greenpoint, too. TDK60. Been shaking a maraca.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Handy Haversack:

Glad to hear it, Carm! Hope you can really soak in the relaxation. Enjoy!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, @radioronan, you in Greenpoint, too? We're up close to the Pulaski!
Avatar 7:18pm TDK60:

radioronan - that's great. I'm lucky to have been able to be at home when these occur. hee.
  7:19pm barba yiorgi:

These guys singing in Greek with a cool but thick Cypriot accent. For those who care.
Avatar 7:19pm Daisy:

diggin' this song, reminds me of the cadence in typical greek music but with its own twist :+)
  7:20pm barba yiorgi:

And Handy Haversack the 7 o clock noise is loud and strong on India street.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Handy Haversack:

Sounds great!

Yeah, here on Green, too, Barba Yiorgi!

This band sure makes me want to hang at the Herbal Relaxation Clubhouse with Dervisi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Rob W:

In our section of Hoboken NJ, the 7 pm thing has really become about kids. I think it's probably a really good thing for them actually.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:22pm radioronan:

Yep @Handy. above the Grouch. since '97. You been a while too?
@tdk60 - yes its pretty cool to hear every night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Rob W:

Thanks Daisy, that's a good description - Greek music with its own twist and, as barba yiorgi says, a Cypriot accent!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Handy Haversack:

@radioronan: Eagle St. 1999-2004, Green St. 2004 to the present!
  7:27pm barba yiorgi:

Cool track, nice bouzouki lead. The tuba (?) gives it a slight klezmer flavor. Nice
Avatar 7:28pm TDK60:

I've been simply playing a G major chord on my guitar out the window. G's a real chiming bell-like chord when played folk style.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:30pm radioronan:

@handy Probably passed each other on street or on G train. Howdy neighbor!

Physically distant handshake, @radioronan! I am sure we have!

We are often walking around a spotted brown dog who looks way too cool and attractive to be slumming it with the likes of us. Wave if you see us!
Avatar 🎸 7:34pm slugluv1313:

fantastic show, Rob!
& yes -- as cynical as i am, i think the 7pm thing is really positive too -- i have seen more than just a few comments, etc. from health care workers & other emergency workers who are really touched by it all :)
yesterday, Bill Withers' "Lean On Me" was blasting in my part of Hoboken! even though a Whitney Houston song was the "scheduled" song for the night
Avatar 7:34pm Daisy:

yeah! maybe i should check out more music from Cyprus... my mom is from Athens and played a lot of Greek songs growing up but it sort of blended all together, it's nice to hear a middle ground. looking forward to the rest of the set thx ^_^
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Handy Haversack:

Are you on BOARD OPS, Daisy? Thanks so much!

Mr. Weisberg, for years you've been saying you've had performances recorded that you didn't have time to play. The rainy days have finally come, and I'm so glad you have the opportunity to finally play this stuff.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Indeed, they are a riot!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Handy Haversack:

*Is* that a tuba? So good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Rob W:

No kidding Daisy! There are some interesting twists on the traditions that you can explore. I don't know if I should out him but one of our commenters played in a band called Annabouboula that took Greek roots in new directions back in the 80s and 90s! Others worth a google: Kristi Stassinopoulou, Mavrika (based in London, I think with connections to Cyprus), Nikos Papazoglou, and the unusual Australia-based duo Xylouris White with lute from Crete and avant-rock drumming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Rob W:

Handy Haversack: That's Demetris Yiasemides - the one member not in the interview - mainly on trombone actually, and also sometimes flute.

Thanks again everyone. One closing production note: You may have heard me say "this week" a couple times in reference to the recent passings of Manu Dibango and Arlus Mabélé but they both actually passed away last week of course. Anyway thank you all so much, everyone take care, be well and stay well!
