The politically outspoken Cyprus-based trio Monsieur Doumani blends traditional influences with contemporary elements, both musical and topical. They've certainly struck a chord: The band's latest album Angathin topped the Transglobal world music DJ chart, they've won critics' awards in Italy and Germany and three award nominations from UK-based Songlines magazine. And they showcased at October's influential WOMEX World Music Expo in Finland. Join us on Saturday for Rob's interview with Monsieur Doumani and their WOMEX EBU radio studio session!

As we take heightened precautions to support public health initiatives, including temporarily closing our doors, we want to maintain our unwavering support of the artistic and creative community and ensure that you continue to thrive. Immigration Equality is the leading LGBTQ immigrant rights organization in the country. It provide s advice and legal services to thousands of LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants seeking refuge, fair treatment, and freedom in the United States. The work is truly lifesaving because there are nearly 80 countries around the world where it is a crime to be LGBTQ, with consequences up to and including the death penalty. For this reason, Immigration Equality fights to obtain asylum in the United States for LGBTQ and HIV-positive refugees - with a remarkable 99% win rate.

Others worth a google: Kristi Stassinopoulou, Mavrika (based in London, I think with connections to Cyprus), Nikos Papazoglou, and the unusual Australia-based duo Xylouris White with lute from Crete and avant-rock drumming.

The musicians all come from a musician caste, the history is complicated, they have faced lots of discrimination through the centuries, but the music is wonderful. And yes, it is kind of a nice vibe for the moment. Actually won't be getting to more Indian music today because the show is pretty set, but you might like a session I recorded in Europe this past fall with musicians from Rajasthan, master fiddler Lakha Khan and his son, it's here: wfmu.org... . Others worth a google: Kristi Stassinopoulou, Mavrika (based in London, I think with connections to Cyprus), Nikos Papazoglou, and the unusual Australia-based duo Xylouris White with lute from Crete and avant-rock drumming.
