Tiger King (on Netflix) has stepped into the entertainment void this week
Avatar 12:09am
Keilidh:

@mariano - ohhh yeah! I haven't played it myself, but watched a lot of gameplay. I've been getting back into Mass Affect Andromeda (never finished)
Avatar 12:09am
Keilidh:

@BH - Tiger King is wildddd!! But I have a really hard time watching animal cruelty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10am
Handy Haversack:

This is great -- I was just getting into sketching some stuff out for tomorrow's D&D game, which has moved to video conferencing but also to once a week since everyone has time and nerves now.

Report from last week, Keilidh, involves mouth babies that age a year for every day -- as does the parent who refused to eat their mouth baby -- dreams that led to caverns of ritual that, when investigated in waking life were full of ghosts, and multiple people being aged 13 years by that main ghost. One-line recap: "Never trust anyone suddenly over thirty. Also: splitting up should help!"

Stuff I'm writing up now involves the specter who sent all of that and the moths she uses to steal dreams.

We're watching Chernobyl, Devs, and Veronica Mars. My reading schedule is fucked without my commute, but I am reclaiming it. Been reading _Split Tooth_, an Inuk (and Canadian) writer (and throat singer). Kind of a "if the Northern Lights were vampires" tale of young love and butane huffing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am
Phillippe Bastille:

watching Tiger King as well. Like they say, you can't make this shit up! Wild tale (tail), that one. Then there's racing games, sudoku, updating the bathroom, organizing my fishing gear. Oh what an exciting life I live

@Handy, yea, I like the Good Place. But she is in commercials for everything from rental cars to refrigerators to make-up, and I swear not long ago she was on three magazine covers in the checkout line at the same time, and none of them were scandal sheets.

@Handy damn, how do you decide what to like and buy and think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am

@Keilidh, a bunch of listeners got into a book talk during Trouble's show this week, and p20 made the effort to compile a "Lockdown Reading List" from what everyone mentioned.

The sunlight on the garden
Hardens and grows cold,
We cannot cage the minute
Within its nets of gold;
When all is told
We cannot beg for pardon.

Our freedom as free lances
Advances towards its end;
The earth compels, upon it
Sonnets and birds descend;
And soon, my friend,
We shall have no time for dances.

The sky was good for flying
Defying the church bells
And every evil iron
Siren and what it tells:
The earth compels,
We are dying, Egypt, dying

And not expecting pardon,
Hardened in heart anew,
But glad to have sat under
Thunder and rain with you,
And grateful too
For sunlight on the garden.

OK, one more, just because I love and miss this person:

"Refrigerator, 1957"

More like a vault -- you pull the handle out
and on the shelves: not a lot,
and what there is (a boiled potato
in a bag, a chicken carcass
under foil) looking dispirited,
drained, mugged. This is not
a place to go in hope or hunger.
But, just to the right of the middle
of the middle door shelf, on fire, a lit-from-within red,
heart red, sexual red, wet neon red,
shining red in their liquid, exotic,
aloof, slumming
in such company: a jar
of maraschino cherries. Three-quarters
full, fiery globes, like strippers
at a church social. Maraschino cherries, maraschino,
the only foreign word I knew. Not once
did I see these cherries employed: not
in a drink, nor on top
of a glob of ice cream,
or just pop one in your mouth. Not once.
The same jar there through an entire
childhood of dull dinners -- bald meat,
pocked peas and, see above,
boiled potatoes. Maybe
they came over from the old country,
family heirlooms, or were status symbols
bought with a piece of the first paycheck
from a sweatshop,
which beat the pig farm in Bohemia,
handed down from my grandparents
to my parents
to be someday mine,
then my child's?
They were beautiful
and, if I never ate one,
it was because I knew it might be missed
or because I knew it would not be replaced
and because you do not eat
that which rips your heart with joy.

i saw a lot of hardcore punk shows at a time when i really liked good ol' punkrock (well, good new punkrock at the time)
i did grow to like the hardcore too but before that happened i didn't pay much attention to a lot of bands, some of which went on to be well-regarded in the "genre".

Oh, funny you should play Portishead - that's another one I'd like to see again. 1994, San Francisco, at Bimbo's 365, a lounge that looked like something out of Goodfellas. Watched the band sitting at a cocktail table, was incredible.

Ratt's only song far as I'm concerned is "Round and Round". Wow, never seen New Model Army, bet that was great. Yeah, the '94 Portishead show was where they played their film "How to Kill a Dead Man" and did the soundtrack as it was playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37am
coelacanth∅:

i don't think i've heard you rant about why no one should cover Leonard Cohen songs. i'd like to!
just curious...especially since he's been covered a lot; and because the 2 (3?) most well-known versions of hallelujah are covers. (as you know)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37am

The DJ's equipment kept messing up, finally he raised his hands and yelled "Bugger!" They'd been so quiet and serious before that it made the whole place burst into laughter.

When I went to Los Angeles i went to a Korean restaurant/bar called The Prince and it is my favorite goddamn place on the planet officially. Very old school vintage-y lounge with a horseshoe bar, korean dishes AND chicken wings and killer cocktails. Not even that expensive! I felt like i was in an awesome movie
  2:39am
Adam West Coaster:

@mariano, was that their first tour over? I saw that one too, in Seattle! It was so great! I still have the framed tour poster.

I love Bimbo’s 365! A friend used to cocktail there.
Avatar 2:40am
Keilidh:

@coelacanth - GLADLY. Everyone who covers Hallelujah covers it in some angelic, emotionally uplifting gospel way. I find that a little blasphemous. The song is clearly, at least to me, bitter in nature. It's not a spiritual love song, in the sense of worship or feeling enlightened. It's bitter and maybe even satirical, gospel of the darkest order!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40am
mariano:

I believe it was their first US tour, Adam. It wasn't long after "Sour Times" became a hit. Yeah, Bimbo's was great. Get to watch a show, sip cocktails, and they were pretty lax with the weed too. Felt like a trip back to the 60s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41am
Handy Haversack:

Last time I saw Portishead was Detroit ... 1997? 1998? Definitely should have eaten more before the show.

We went to see the Pogues every year for ... five years? Otherwise had seen them twice and Shane and the Popes twice.

I have seen New Model Army ...six? times? Between high school and adult life. When we saw them play here in like 2007 I bought a onesie for a friend's kid and mentioned to the person selling merch that I remembered buying a T-shirt from her 20 years before. She said: "Fuck it. It's the world. We get old. We still know"

EVEN THE MERCH PEOPLE.
