Avatar 8:54am WR:

Hi all sheltering in this time and space. Awake and getting ready to go OUT. Success and health to all must literally venture out.
Avatar 8:56am DJpeterDE:

Good morning @WR! Yes, literally and metaphorically OUT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @WR and @DJpeterDE! So glad to see you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am listener james from westwood:

Morning, inwardly facing Outies!
  9:00am John from Florham park:

Hello fellow out listeners
Avatar 9:01am fred:

Good morning Jeff and OUTsiders
  9:01am Listener Robert:

You sure we're ALLOWED to breathe out now?
Avatar 9:01am holland oats:

yo d:o! peeps!
Avatar 9:02am Sem:

Coming in the out door always changes the water on the beans.

Good mixed metaphors and morning, both, Jeff, and Sunday morning listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Jeff Golick:

Warm greetings, @listener james from westwood, @John from Florham park, @fred, and @Listener Robert! And @holland oat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Andrew Waterloo:

good morning
Avatar 9:02am DJpeterDE:

Hey Jeff! I'm aiming for April 14 for my Makanda Ken McIntyre show. This Tuesday (March 31) is 100% Freddie Green.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Jeff Golick:

And hello to stream daddy-o @Sem! And @Andrew Waterloo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Doug Schulkind:

I'll have you on in the background during live video yoga class. Then I'll have you on in the foreground.
Avatar 9:09am hyde:

gooooood morning!
Avatar 9:10am WR:

Stir crazy already? Ahead of the curve. And with that frivolous comment I go out to acquire milk and beer and a few other necessities. Listening if the spectrum forces are willing but with gloves mask and visor, no chatting.
  9:12am John from Florham park:

@Jeff ever since this virus hit been finding myself listening more and chatting even more on the mother stream and the internet streams, and has kept me somewhat sane
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

@Doug! My yoga these days entails bringing my shoulders down an inch or two, when I notice them up around my ears.

S'up, @hyde!

Stay safe, @WR, and good luck with the foraging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Glad to hear it, @JfFp. It's been the same with me, too.
Avatar 9:13am DJpeterDE:

IL & TR are in sync! (as one would hope)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE: ok, re McIntyre! I have started poking around Kalaparusha, too...
Avatar 9:14am fred:

Always a treat to hear Tom Rainey, thanks Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Uncle Michael:

Good morning, shut-ins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @Uncle Michael! How's life in Kansas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Andrew Waterloo:

I plan on foraging tomorrow or Tuesday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Uncle Michael:

Life is good. I'm flapping blueberry flipjacks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jeff Golick:

Yum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jeff Golick:

@AW: I think one of us here has to go foraging today; we are running low on essentials (e.g., cookies).
Avatar 9:22am hyde:

i went out adventuring yesterday. it was odd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am doctorjazz:

A sleepy hi to all you D.O. folks.
Avatar 9:22am fred:

Speaking of essentials, I haven't been able to find Guinness in the past two weeks
Avatar 9:23am duke:

Hi Jeff and D:O folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz! Welcome, and please keep sleeping -- need you rested.

Howdy, @duke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Stanley:

Hi Jeff and all.
Definately feels like Sunday, today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am doctorjazz:

Just sleepy from binging The Good Place too late...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Jeff Golick:

Welcome, @Stanley! What's the scene like in Edinburgh?
  9:27am John from Florham park:

@Doctorjazz morning
  9:27am John from Florham park:

@Stanley morning
  9:28am Listener Gregory:

Good morning, Jeff et al. I've been listening throughout, but my keyboard wouldn't work in the shower. Then community standards required that I get dressed, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Jeff Golick:

G'morning, @Listener Gregory. The ironic thing is that I need to imagine the audience in their underwear to be able to do this.
  9:30am Listener Gregory:

@fred, ditto on Tom Rainey.
@Jeff, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am doctorjazz:

Hi John FFP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Andrew Waterloo:

I made chocolate chip cookies yesterday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am doctorjazz:

Like this Roscoe Mitchell, new recording? (Says 2020, but could be reissue). Very cool!
Avatar 9:35am alanr:

Listening to stream from my temporarily safe space in Mexico City....safe for the moment....your show is comforting to all your listeners, especially now! Gracias!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Jeff Golick:

@doc: it's a new release, more info here: www.widehive.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Warms my heart to see you, @alanr. Hope your space stays safe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am ParUbi:

Good morning Jeff G and outizens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Jeff Golick:

Hey, look, it's @ParUbi!

So, uh, @Andrew Waterloo...what...uh, what kind of cookies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Stanley:

People seem to be be obeying the distance rules when out for some fresh air but it's impossible to be 100% living in a tenement, when you have to pass people on the stairs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Andrew Waterloo:

this week, chocolate chip... last week.. peanut butter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Jeff Golick:

Ooof, yeah, @Stanley. An elevator is probably no better....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Andrew Waterloo:

If you really want to spice up CC cookies mix in a quarter butter scotch chips
Avatar 9:48am DJpeterDE:

I'm gonna pull out Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time later: not b/c of our current situation, but the Roscoe Mitchell made me think of it and I want to compare them.
Avatar 9:48am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and listeners.

Stanley, Dreadlocks cant live ina tenement yard, can't penetrate in tenement yard.
Managed to win Bunny Wailer's Rock n Groove album last evening on an auction site. Cool runnings indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Jeff Golick:

Welcome, welcome, @Brian in UK1
  9:53am Listener Gregory:

"the music is rooted in minimalism, noise, pop, and the sounds of today," according to the website. Today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Jeff Golick:

Is that describing the Webber/Morris project, @LG? It was definitely the sound of yesterday (on Dave Sewelson's show)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Jeff Golick:

This cannot be great yoga-doing music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Stanley:

Brian - Hi.
Funny that because the very incident I recalled earlier was having to pass my neighbour arguing with the ground floor neighbour about his dog pooping in the tenement yard. Not so cool runnings, here. But where's a poor dreadlocks gonna live?
Avatar 10:00am Stork von Wolfgang:

Greetings, Outlings! What joyful noises this way come?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Uncle Michael:

Yoga, no. But I've been kicking serious ass at interpretive dance for the last 20 minutes.
  10:03am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, yes, that was the blurb on Webber/Morris. It was a fine piece, but the sounds of today... not sure. Nor the noise and pop, in that particular piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Uncle Michael:

And in case anyone is wondering, I look surprisingly good in a leotard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

@Stork! Just setting the stage for you, my friend.

@UM: it almost goes without saying.
Avatar 10:13am fred:

@UM: Hofesh Shechter reposted a podcast he made years ago, if you want to get more contemporary: fueltheatre.com...
Even better, if you own a chair you can learn part of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's Rosas Danst Rosas: www.rosasdanstrosas.be...
Avatar 10:18am Brian in UK:

Ah Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies and Mrs Do-As-You-Would-Be-Done-By.
A motto for my life.
Avatar 10:22am hyde:

i just found out there was a Wadada Leo Smith-Vijay Iyer-Andre Cyrille show at Harvard that I would have missed because I didn't know about it but it got postponed because of the virus. I guess that's good news?
  10:23am Listener Gregory:

@Hyde, you really dodged a bullet there!
Avatar 10:24am Stork von Wolfgang:

Apropos Penderecki - WFMU DJ Fabio shared this link this morning:
culture.pl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Stork. I found that to be a really good and thorough overview!
  10:32am Listener Gregory:

I find this (Cherry/Penderecki) to be the sounds of today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Uncle Michael:

My internet is slow. This is the sound of 40 seconds ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

D:O Radio, just easing everybody into another calm Sunday. No need to thank me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Jeff Golick:

Our dog just threw up. Trying not to take it as his comment on this piece.
Avatar 10:45am fred:

Is that his usual reaction to your show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Uncle Michael:

Your dog is just improvising.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Jeff Golick:

No, @fred, usually he just happily ignores it, like everyone else in this apartment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Upward chucking dog?
Avatar 10:53am Brian in UK:

If that was our Beagle he would have eaten again straight after chucking.
Avatar 10:55am DJpeterDE:

Listening to the Penderecki in this context reminds me of an essay that I read once. At the outset, let me say that I am not persuaded by this argument, which I think is ahistorical. But basically, this guy suggested that notated music had evolved from modes, to diatonicism, and then to serialism; and that "African American jazz" had evolved from blues, to harmony, to "free"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: we too have witnessed that, but in this case I think there was too much plastic (!!) to merit revisiting this particular snack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

I join you in your unpersuasion, DJpeterDE.
Avatar 10:58am Stork von Wolfgang:

Has anyone seen the top of my head? It seems to have been blown off with that last blast of horns in unsion .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @DJpeterDE. Was the underlying point that there is no overlap between the two musical strains (the false binary of notated vs. jazz)?
Avatar 11:03am DJpeterDE:

To the contrary, i think the point was that contemporary notated music and out jazz got to the same place. As in: superficial similarity between George Lewis, Tyshawn Sorey, and serialism.
Avatar 11:03am DJpeterDE:

"atonal" is the word I was looking for earlier... modes-diatonic-atonal...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

sounds like i've reached my favorite destination! Greetings, Jeff and WFMU folx!
Avatar 11:06am fred:

Use of electronics (even worse, software) in contemporary music has muddied those waters quite a bit: there is basically no notation, so that playing some pieces relies on memories of people who were there (and are dying off)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am chresti:

Morning Jeff and Outs that are in!
  11:08am Listener Gregory:

@fred, I don't know about this progression, but I am struck that there are more and more string quartets being written (or perhaps just as many), and some pretty good symphonic works still being produced. Things have a way of circling back.
Avatar 11:08am DJpeterDE:

@Fred great point. You could also bring in "folk" music at this point -- home-made instruments vs. modular synths etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

the d:O chatboard is always a stimulating blend of deep music geekery and shamelessly bad jokes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

in other words: MY PEOPLE! xoxox
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

I come for the DMG, but I stay for the SBJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, @Granny Spicy Tuna! And @chresti! Welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am chresti:

Haha Granny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am doctorjazz:

Said I was sleepy, had headphones in, listening to the show, just woke up.
Avatar 11:11am DJpeterDE:

@Granny! Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

Well the music got in there, @doc.
Avatar 11:14am fred:

@Gregory: I don't know anything about it, I'm just relaying some of the conversation topics that used to be mentioned around coffee at work (I'm just a tech guy, but I work for a contemporary music place)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am doctorjazz:

Hey to heat it awake in the archive...see you played the Weber Morris Vid Band, weren't they great on Dave Sewelson's show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Jeff Golick:

@fred: that's the way I feel, too. (Minus the tech know-how.)

@doc: that was a tremendously wonderful show!
Avatar 11:17am fred:

Doug writes "DMG", doctorjazz is jolted awake. Coincidence?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Jeff Golick:

Here's a link to Dave Sewelson's Drummer stream show yesterday, an all-timer: wfmu.org...
  11:17am rw:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Wassup, @rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Stanley:

Really digging this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
There are no coincidences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

DJpeterDE: hello there! chresti, always a pleasure. Glad to see you all, fred, Jeff, Listener Gregory, doctorjazz, Stork von Wolfgang… and Doug, who's got a snappy retort up every sleeve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Dave Sewelson:

no co-inkydinks
  11:22am rw:

Hey Jeff! You know. Hanging out. Nothing pressing for the next month at least. Relaxing and anxiety producing at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jeff Golick:

@Dave Sewelson!
  11:23am rw:

Happy to have this show and everyone here. Thanks as always!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

this Fire! Orchestra is mesmerizing
  11:25am Listener Gregory:

Well, that was something.
Avatar 11:26am WR:

Foraging completed, reasonable success, writing emails to concerned family enquiries, yes still surviving here in one of the Covid-19 epicenters; three blocks away from Elmhurst Hospital which I read has been totally dedicated to Covid-19 patients. Jeff, this has been one hell of a program.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

yay, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am doctorjazz:

@Fred, hahaha! (Reminds me, have to order that Willem Breuker Kollektief album they mentioned in their latest email).
  11:31am Listener Gregory:

I don't know about doormen, but "double-gloving it" is something I only do in private.
And many thanks, Sem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am doctorjazz:

Some of the players on the Don Cherry track are Breuker members as well.
  11:32am Listener Gregory:

Licking stick is just out nowadays. Really, people, be safe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

This guy Brown is pretty good. Does have any other records?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Dave in Vermont:

I remember hearing this at a party in Michigan (or Wisconsin?) in 1990(?) and it changed my conception of James Brown. It's one of those musical moments in my life.
Avatar 11:35am DJpeterDE:

I'm awake now! Good God!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Uncle Michael:

That Mick mimicked JBs moves *on* the T.A.M.I. show was brave.
Avatar 11:37am WR:

TAMI show? I saw that in a theater in Amarillo TX in early spring of 1965, during which I had my first "petting" experience.
Avatar 11:37am DJpeterDE:
