Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am WR:

Hi all. Busy with work as usual for me. GTD playing when not in conference calls. Coffee break gives me time to comment. Doug, your playing that San Lucas Band cut reminded me of a day long ago when I assisted on a record fair in New Orleans. Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie and I got into good natured discussion about traditional music field recordings. Strachwitz said that recording was not representative of a tradition, but the result of a producer that looked for the wackiest out of tune stuff he could record. That there were other bands in that area who were not so untempered, not so cacophonous. Being a fan of Albert Ayler, I was perfectly happy to have spotlight shined on the cacophony. He said others in the tradition were being misrepresented. Great record fair banter. Memorable day.
  10:47am Listener Gregory:

I am hearing the sadly forgotten George Adams here, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

So glad you enjoyed, Granny ST!

Welcome aboard, WR! And thanks for that inside story on the San Lucas Band from Chris Strachwitz! My WFMU colleague Rex Doane used to work with Strachwitz. Rex had some stories about that deal...

Tell Heggerty I have a direct line to Mr Trager. And if I do enough shrooms, I have a direct line to Mr Buckley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

I mean, Bennett Friedman isn't even hiding it. Again, not complaining. Just acknowledging the Trane "homage."
Avatar 11:04am Brian in UK:

"Bok, bok" said Heggerty. (freely translated as bok bok)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Andrew Waterloo:

Morning.. good show today.. I've been listening :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Stanley:

Woo!I saw Shirati Jazz in London in '84
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

Saw them in New York, Stanley. My hips still hurt.
  11:18am Listener Gregory:

Orchestre D.O. 7—was that Jeff Golick's first band in high school??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Stanley:

Haha LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am chresti:

Wow Stanley@11:16
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am chresti:

One of the perks of staying home is that I can listen to D:O
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

No, Listener Gregory. It was his 7th band in high school. Obviously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am chresti:

Haha Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Stanley:

I used to dance quite wildly to benga, soukous etc when young and later when I was older, was taught by an African friend to keep keep the feet to a short little shuffle but move the top half to conserve energy. Over the course of an evening he'd get rather drunk and towards the end his 'dancing' consisted of hardly moving, can in hand, eyes half closed and nodding his head to the music. He said that in his mind he was dancing like he was young again.
  11:33am Listener Gregory:

Observers agree that dancing in my mind is my best move.
Avatar 11:33am Brian in UK:

If this music does not move you, check for a pulse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

Tears for Aurlus Mabele, lead singer with Loketo. I saw that soukous band numerous times. Featuring the wildly undulating, hypnotic guitar of Diblo Dibala. Aurus Mabele died from COVID-19 a few days ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Stanley:

Some of these bands used to play for six hours straight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Maggie B.:

Cuomo's on now, but for once I'm staying right here. Need this balm for my soul.
Avatar 11:37am Brian in UK:

Stanley, where did you see these bands?
Avatar 11:38am Listening Out There:

Hey, all. Sitting in my more-musical bunker...
Avatar 11:40am Sem:

Been enjoying the program during a marathon bread-making session, Doug.

Bok iok choy, says the resident Peking Duck here, BiUK, to your chickens. Stanley: someone is interested in candid photography, nudge nudge.

Brian: I menat that it was common for such bands to play all night. I saw Orchestra Super Mazembe in Nairobi. Left after a couple of hours and they were still going.
Avatar 11:43am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Stanley:

I was already a Fela fan when I hit New York in '83. I remember seeing Sam Fan Thomas (from Cameroon) a few times early on and falling for his groovy thang.
