Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Gaylord Fields:

Jeff, perhaps I should be listening to the next 10-15 minutes of this show in my car for familiarity's sake.
  10:04pm John from Florham park:

Hello Jeff and Scott
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm ParUbi:

Hi Jeff, hey everyone
Avatar 10:05pm Jeff Conklin:

@Gaylord: As I mentioned elsewhere, before I recorded this show I drove around my neighborhood for an hour and twenty minutes to be as realistic as possible.
  10:06pm allanToronto:

Popol Vuh. Book of the People. Vox Populi. WFMU

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Gaylord Fields:

@Jeff: Haha! Old habits, right, man?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm chresti:

I love Vox Populi.
Avatar 10:08pm Jeff Conklin:

I went to Ear Wax Records in Brooklyn on a lovely spring day my first week of living there. I asked about Popol Vuh having just read a mention of them in a music magazine. The guy put that song on and everything changed for the better...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Uncle Michael:

Gaylord>Jeff has become one of my favorite gazintas.
  10:08pm Kiefer:

Yeeeeeahhhhh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm ParUbi:

Ear Wax? That sounds familiar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Uncle Michael:

"The guy"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm chresti:

That's Fabio's place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm ParUbi:

@chresti-- wasn't sure, but that's it, right?
Avatar 10:10pm Jeff Conklin:

Fabio wasn't there, It was a guy whose name escapes me and a guy named Jim who is a Seattle guy now and a listener of this show. Full circle!
Swag For Life Member 10:10pm brendangen:

"Fun" fact is that I constantly confuse Popol Vuh and Arvo Part's names and often speak about one when meaning the other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: I do like being Jeff's lead-in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm chresti:

ParUbi, right.
Avatar 10:11pm Jeff Conklin:

My editing seemed to hold up between first two jams. Hope it keeps up...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Gaylord Fields:

@brendangen: And what about Amon Düül (II)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Chop Scott:

Escott! Popol Vuh--interesting start, eh? There is something in that track that mesmerizes me each and every time. The show sounds great Jeff--as ever!
  10:13pm Lara:

Aw yeah
Avatar 10:13pm TDK60:

Dusty is not a betting gal, hi Mike, hope youre doing well..
  10:16pm Jon:

Thanks for recording this show, Jeff. It wouldn’t feel like Sunday night without The Avant Ghetto!
Avatar 10:17pm Mike & Dusty:

Jeff
what are you wearing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff, if you decide to stream live from home, I'm pretty sure that pants interfere with the connection. That's a lesson I learned the hard way.
Avatar 10:18pm Jeff Conklin:

Jeans, Wet Tuna t-shirt, one of two flannel shirts I own.
  10:18pm Lara:

Jeff is this loner folk
Avatar 10:19pm Jeff Conklin:

  10:24pm wendy del formaggio:

I’m starting to get a little freaked out, but that will pass. It usually does. And if it doesn’t, I picked up some Xanax yesterday.
  10:24pm CraigInMoTown:

Two songs in row that I know- crazy!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Franco Twinkie:

The first time I saw Zabriskie Point, at Baxter Hall on the campus of Cal Tech, outer space was replaced with stealing an airplane in The Mojave Desert as the go to visual in my brain when ever I heard Dark Star.
  10:48pm Carmichael:

I watched Stereolab at Primavera 2019 on YouTube. 20 minutes of bliss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm chresti:

Franco found a jumbo industrial roll, like the kind they have in gas stations.
  10:49pm Jeff Conklin:

Starbirthed did a great set in their living room that I caught.

I’ve been advising on a new live streaming concert venture that’ll be announced soon. Lots of Avant Ghetto friendly artists.
  10:49pm Carmichael:

HA HA! Can you fit it on the dispenser?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm ParUbi:

I delivered a 24 roll double pack of TP to Doug Schulkind today
Avatar 10:51pm Centripetal Force:

certainly glad you figured out how to make this work!
  10:51pm Riley:

@Jeff heady rig. need camera folks for the streaming shindig?
  10:51pm RCU-Keith:

Goddamn this Dark Star is insanely great. I haven't listened to this one in ages. It's a total joy to hear tonight, thanks, Jeff.

  10:53pm Riley:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm chresti:

Swag For Life Member 10:54pm opurt:

Jeff, can't wait to hear about your streaming concert venture. Thank you so much for the great show tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Franco Twinkie:

I must clarify, Carmichael, the jumbo roll of TP was in my shop, I just brought it home. But yesterday I found a jumbo roll of paper towels at Mission Hardware. They have boxes of the stuff!
  10:55pm MONEYBAG$:

just noticed that even in times like these, there are people posting ads on Craigslist looking for singers can who "nail" Phil Collins songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm chresti:

That was nice of you, ParUbi.
  10:55pm Kiefer:

@ParUbi I teach basic coding (Python) and CAD to 8th graders. And a general tech exploration class to 7th graders (podcasting, video editing, block coding, website design).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm ParUbi:

There was always enough TP for everyone, but people had to go bananas
  10:56pm steveL:

Damn it Jeff! Your voice is your ticket to fame!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Franco Twinkie:

You just sound like you have a cold, Jeff.

That first set was all digital, this second set is all freshly ripped vinyl
  11:00pm Kiefer:

@jeff conklin The mic is just fine.
Avatar 11:00pm cosmic matrix:

This is fantastic. Actually your voice sounds better on that mic than many podcasts do! Seriously. Maybe it's because you know how to use it.
Avatar 11:01pm Jeff Conklin:

I have a newer Mac, i have to say its built in speakers are excellent as far as these things go so I guess the mic isnt horrible.

I forgot to mention it on the air, but my deepest thanks and gratitude to all of you who pledged to FMU during the fundraiser. Really, can't thank you enough. If you're new, and can spare it, it's not too late.
  11:05pm Carmichael:

Avatar 11:05pm Cabbage:

Everything sounds really good, Geoff. You are obviously a good DIY self teacher! That was a really sweet, meditative dark star from 1969 in Eugene Oregon… Thanks for that…

Sorry for misspelling your name, Jeff. that was the auto correct on my phone

All good, Bob, that typo put me into an upper class world I'm wholly unfamilar with...

Damn that was such a great Cockburn earlier! 3 songs ago, it was just a great Cockburn.
  11:15pm Rambutan:

Dion! Excellent choice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Scott Williams:

Man, I love this era Dion
Avatar 11:16pm Jeff Conklin:

Cockburn is so so so incredibly underrated. His newest album is FANTASTIC.

Dion, too, is unheralded for this phase of his career. He kills me!
Avatar 11:17pm Saul Wright:

Saludos Jeff and everybody. From Chile, where, like so many, we’re in for a rough couple months... glad to have music.
Avatar 11:17pm joeray:

Good Evening, Jeff! I-Phone/Apple microphones are surprisingly good. It's cool that you and other WFMU DJs are doing your shows remotely. Station Manager Ken (during his program) sounded more than a little freaked out about the DJ's ability to continue with their shows during this Pandemic. Thanks for still being on the air if only temporarily displaced.
  11:17pm Carmichael:

Last song on the album. Always good luck.
Avatar 11:17pm Saul Wright:

Def need to check out Cockburn, that song was great.
Avatar 11:18pm Jeff Conklin:

Was Dion sober at this point? This is a friend of Bill W song title...
  11:18pm Carmichael:

It was ‘71, Jeff.
Avatar 11:18pm Jeff Conklin:

@Saul: You can't go wrong with any Bruce from the 70s...
  11:18pm allanToronto:

Dion DiMucci is under-rated...a career overshadowed by his early hits
Avatar 11:19pm Jeff Conklin:

@joeray: Yeah it wasnt as bad as I thought. Ken's been doing a great job through this crisis. We all wish we could be there..
Avatar 11:20pm Jason Elbogen:

Hey Jeff... may I ask which program you used to record this? I just bought a Yeti USB microphone--arrived today--but haven't set it up yet because I'm simultaneously dealing with another work-from-home-issue (I'm a public school teacher and remote learning starts tomorrow).
Avatar 11:20pm Jeff Conklin:

Ah, forgot I put this on. This is Bobby Vee!
Avatar 11:21pm Jeff Conklin:

@Jason: I used Audacity. Very simple and intuitive. Let me know how that mic works out!
  11:21pm Carmichael:

Bobby friggin Vee? Wow ...
Avatar 11:21pm Jeff Conklin:

Yup, from his 1972 country rock record, WHICH IS FANTASTIC
Avatar 11:22pm Jason Elbogen:

Ok, cool, I know audacity pretty well. You just recorded off your soundcard directly I guess? But did you use some kind of mixing program to cue up tracks? Or did you just drag them all in beforehand to make a large file?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Bobby Vee, the guy who put together a show to replace Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper, who died in the plane crash en route.
Avatar 11:24pm Jeff Conklin:

@Jason: For digital tracks I just dump them in Audacity. For the vinyl, I have an external soundcard with a line out from my amplifier to rip the vinyl..
Avatar 11:30pm Jason Elbogen:

I have a USB turntable that I'll use for non-digital... Thanks for the tips and as keep safe, Jeff.
  11:33pm Alex of Chicago:

Avatar 11:38pm Jeff Conklin:

@Gary: You may be the first person I've ever heard of who knew Boa back then. Wild. You had the LP?
  11:39pm PMD:

@Jeff reading the question about recording, did you make one large audacity file? Didn’t see the answer.
Avatar 11:41pm Jeff Conklin:

@ethan: Jesse Colin Young

@PMD: Yes I combined digital tracks, mic breaks, and vinyl rips into one track. FLAC file.
