A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Here's something strange and surprising and positive: my work (nonprofit scholarly publishing) is taking money it would have spent sending people to academic conferences and similar matters this spring and giving every employee a $100 reimbursement for book purchases at independent bookstores.

@Priscilla: that would be an amazing sight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am David (in London):

@Handy - That is a very encouraging idea. I'm going to make sure I keep it local and pump as much spending as I can through the local shops.
Avatar 9:55am βrian:

Hooray for Open Access, yo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Trouble:

that's outstanding handy! so many indy shops are shipping for minimal charges right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am David (in London):

I think Venice has really suffered from those massive cruise ships that do the 'tour' of European ports. I was talking to a guy in Split in Croatia, which also is on the stop map, and he was saying that basically the city doesn't even get much from them. They disgorge thousands of people in a short space of time, but because they get all meals inclusive on the boat, they stroll around for a few hours, then get back onboard, and don't even pump much money into the city's economy. Anyway, sorry, rant over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Priscilla:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Handy Haversack:

@DIL: Us too. We figure at least one order-in per week. Pet food supplies, of course, must be maintained. We are fully aware of what the cats think of as "Plan B."

Our neighborhood bookstore has a second location -- in Jersey City! When we went to volunteer at WFMU Sunday night, we stopped off there, and I bought a book IN NEW JERSEY! It was a thrill. (I am an enormous dork.) Also pretty much the last time we did anything "normal"!

@Trouble -- we met briefly last Sat.! I offered you a Greenpoint sadly-not-gluten-free doughnut as you were MCing for Rob W. after we answered calls during Todd's show.
  10:00am allanTORONTO:

Interesting. Some recordings have so much funk in them originally that it’s a struggle for a remix to get on top of it..it shines thru...awwww I dunno....never mind...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am David (in London):

@Handy - I'm going to pop to the shops in a minute. I might have to call into the Stoke Newington Bookshop and pick something up. It's my public duty dammit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Handy Haversack:

You're kind of a hero, @DIL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am WoodsOfNH:

This is exactly what my wife's been up to...helping to set up distance learning. A tough go with the kids at her school: learning disabilities, home issues, poverty, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am p20:

@D(iL): Your rant is on-point. Cruise ships are awful and it's a big problem. Venice is not the only city that suffers from them, there were huge protests in Barcelona that were partly successful in reducing cruise ship traffic.
Avatar 10:05am βrian:

I've had a hard time learning distance, but I'm getting there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Vanessa bikes:

I am so happy to be working from home today so I can listen to your show live.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am p20:

I've been saying this a lot lately but: Hooray for International Anthem. They put out so much good stuff in 2019 and it looks like 2020 is going to be another great year for them.
Avatar 10:10am Snoochienucci:

ohh wow just realized that ave maria was Big Blood. that is awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am p20:

@priscilla: It's real quiet here. Took a drive yesterday to take care of some essential business, and the streets were almost deserted. I think people are obeying the orders to stay inside and, y'know, wash your hands a lot and await further instructions. The weather has been pretty grey and rainy though. I'm wondering if people will stay cooped up once we finally have a sunny spring day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Mick:

Indeed, most of the people I see outside are walking dogs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am melinda:

@David I'm in Portland, Maine. We don't get the same traffic as Venice, of course, but I'm not a fan of cruise ships. I work retail in our Old Port district and worry about floating petri dishes docking on our shores.

Such a great show today, Trouble. And now Alasdair Roberts! his live stream from Cafe Oto yesterday was extraordinary. www.cafeoto.co.uk...

That’s it. I’m going outside. I’ve been tiling a bathroom that I built all by my lonesome. Going bonkers. Open the pod-bay door HAL. HAL, open the pod-bay door....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Trouble:

thanks Irene, stay well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Irene Trudel:

Ah, @woj, I see we were posting the same thing. The Cafe Oto streams are on London time, which is four hours ahead of us in the NYC area. (They're not on Daylight Saving time yet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Irene Trudel:

Thanks Trouble. You too. WFMU is my lifeline!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am zopa:

I mean Trouble!
Avatar 11:12am Mike & Dusty:

Trouble, i partly heard you discussing a resource for kids (i.e., for parents) just before you back-announced Lizzy Mercier a while ago. I found the Free & Open Resources for K12 link that someone posted above, and I know Art21 — were you talking about something add’l? My youngest sister is locked down in Dubai with her two young daughters (and our mom).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Njorg:

  11:14am John from Florham park:

@Grqnny saw a news report from KCBS about a nursing home in burlingham that went on lockdown
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Michele with One "L":

Really great to hear you today Trouble. Sending positive vibes to everyone. xo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Handy Haversack:

@snooch (11:12): that kept happening to me yesterday afternoon. Unacceptable!
  11:16am John from Florham park:

@michele sending some back to you
Avatar 11:16am prguitar:

Sweet to hear your voice this morning, and listen to all of the musical finery Ms. Trouble!! Glad I could help in the phone room for Rob's show last Saturday!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am maestroso:

Wonderful show today, thanks Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Handy Haversack:

@Mike and Dusty (presumably mainly Mike?), the other resource Trouble mentioned is Carson Ellis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am David (in London):

I'm back in the house. Handy - I bought a very nice hardback about the history of space exploration. I feel heroic.
  11:17am John from Florham park:

@Handy if this station and the str am goes off the air,We are screwed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Trouble:

@mike and dusty: look up carson ellis on instagram. she is doing fab projects for kids and rounding up kids authors to do live book readings on insta
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Trouble:

  11:21am Listener Gregory:

I feel like I'm hearing Chris Speed play on this record (hike). Is he part of the group?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am WoodsOfNH:

Dang, Arto. Have tickets to see him at a festival at the end of June. Doubt it'll happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Handy Haversack:

@DIL, do you know _Spacecraft, 2000 to 2100 AD_ by Stewart Cowley? Absolute space titilation for the design-oriented. A catalogue of spacecraft from an alternate history, all with oil paintings commissioned from a London (I think) design studio. Fantastic if you can find a copy -- they are not rare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Trouble:

@listener gregory: don't see his name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am woj:

@irene, great minds! i sure hope alasdair gets back over here again - lovely to see live!
Avatar 11:24am βrian:

Space exploration makes me think of the Andromeda Strain.
  11:24am tim from Champaign:

Thanks for the art tips! I’m at home with my kids until at least mid April. So far we have found Pete the Cat and Mo Willems doing daily lessons.
Avatar 11:24am Mike & Dusty:

THANKS @Handy and @Trouble!
and now, i tear myself from the radio and take Dusty for a just-gotta-miss-some-Modern World-sometimes walk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Handy Haversack:

Bagpipe and I will soon do the same, @Mike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am p20:

Not Damo Suziki's "Sound Carriers" - a different crew, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am mariano:

Hey Trouble, all. Hope everyone's safely and securely in the lifeboat. I'm so grateful to all the FMU dj's and staff for making sure the music keeps playing.
  11:29am Listener Gregory:

Thanks for checking, Trouble. And thanks so much for coming in to brighten things up for us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Handy Haversack:

Hey, @mariano! Good to see you again (again)! Was just about to start asking people if they knew what had happened to you. How was your trip?
Avatar 11:31am Julien "cabin fever" à Montréal:

I have no idea what Eliana is singing about, but this song is lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am David (in London):

@Handy - I don't, but I will look into that. I still have an original Chris Foss book of spacecraft design from the mid 70s, signed by the great man when he did a promo event in Oxford when I was a kid. A treasured possession that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am David (in London):

Hey mariano.
Avatar 11:31am tak:

she's singing she has money to make
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am steveo:

  11:33am John from Florham park:

Hey Marino what’s up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Dave in Vermont:

WFMU is supporting grocery workers (my co-workers and me) by being on the air. Working on a crazy-ass receiving dock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am thriftstoreleather:

What a great song by, Eliana Pittman. I looked it up and it's another 1972 record. 1972, what a magic year for music. My wife was born in '72, that's cool too! This Del Forno track is groovy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am mariano:

Thanks @Handy - trip was great if somewhat eerily quiet towards the end as the bug started hitting Australia. Heya @John from FP, good to see you, hope all's well with you.
Avatar 11:36am zivilars:

I like the current very much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Mick:

Super set, Trouble! So so thankful for you (and everyone here)

Neighbor in the building starting an email tree; people offering to help each other out - silver linings in addition to the fact that our hands are scrubbed cleaner than they have ever been.
Avatar 11:37am Mike & Dusty:

@Handy — Bagpipe! what sorta dog?

i still haven’t left because Trouble hasn’t let me — Dal Forno into Mrs. Drake is (contact-free chef’s kiss) sublime

I've got this Cornell birdfeeder cam running nonstop on a spare screen with the sound up - it's a very nice background to have:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am p20:

The whole show has been great today. Perfect match for my mood this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Handy Haversack:

@Mike (and Dusty): He's a catahoula-pit mix. All brown spots. A little over 40 lbs. Extra portions of adorable and ridiculous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am mariano:

I hear you, @John from FP. Doing the same here. Ok, @Trouble, make me all misty-eyed with the last couple of tunes why dontcha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Yes:

@ranjit, thanks for the link
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am WoodsOfNH:

Man, I'm digging this song. This recent glued-to-FMU habit has really expanded my list of things to be purchased.

Thank you Trouble!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am WoodsOfNH:

@John from Floham park...no doubt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am David (in London):

mariano - I think everyone here has been drawing really strength from being able to meet here, enjoy the music and talk about something that isn't you-know-what. It's a real joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Andrew Waterloo:

It's been so long since I've sat at home with Trouble on the speakers.

I am searching my house for important old documents. I may grow old, hee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am thriftstoreleather:

What a great, "taking a bath mix" I'm going to do this later tonight. Give the show another listen, soak in some hot suds, maybe with a glass of wine...Thank you, Trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Trouble. Good music for shut-ins this morning.
Avatar 11:50am Mike & Dusty:

@Handy (and Bagpipe) nice! Dusty is a shepherd-husky mix, 8 yrs old and, to my glee and chagrin, in the midst of something like a second adolescence. She’s got freckles.
Avatar 11:51am Snoochienucci:

@Mariano @DIL yup its nice that we have this virtual crew to hang out with, and like you said a place we can all converge to
Avatar 11:52am Snoochienucci:

and of course the music is always good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Handy Haversack:

There's so much more accu traffic that it takes me a while to catch back up after working for a bit!

@Mike, When All of This Is Behind Us(TM), we'll have to get them together for a romp.
  11:52am John from Florham park:

@DIL and the people on the chat boards have really been great with just one person going apeshit so far

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, John. Been seeing robins already this week. What's the typical day of the year for robins to appear?
  11:54am John from Florham park:

@Handy I have noticed that, we just live chatting with each other and keeps us sane
  11:54am John from Florham park:

@Ken have no idea when that happens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Thanks SO MUCH, Trouble! Such a great show and a great gift to all of us.
