Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Uncle Michael:

This is just like college radio...but with cleaner hands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm doctorjazz:

This Houselords track is very cool...thought Beefheart at first when I came back to the room with the music.

Terry Riley is still performing? He must be in his 80s now.

Howdy Michael. Is there an official Hinky Dinky policy in regards to snacking while typing?

I saw this in the flick on TCM not too long ago
  2:13pm Marie:

I agree with all of you about Fred. Watching those movies as a kid and hearing these songs thrilled me (I realize now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Michael 98145:

Whee !
Avatar 2:15pm still b/p:

Different versions are cited of what the initial screen test notes said. Fred himself reported much later it was:"Can't act. Slightly bald. Also dances."
Selznick said this: "I am uncertain about the man, but I feel, in spite of his enormous ears and bad chin line, that his charm is so tremendous that it comes through even on this wretched test."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Michael 98145:

Never tire of his movies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

Selznick was no dope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm melinda:

@still b/p that's hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Phillippe Bastille:

Oh man, I haven't heard this Peter Case in years! So sweet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm chresti:

I haven't been ordered to stay home from work, yet. Although the city is sending surveys to fill out and send back for possible disaster relief service.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

That's how I felt a couple of days ago, Phillipe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Greetings, Uncle Michael and Hinky Dinksters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm ifny:

Happy New Year and new reality everyone <3 The bees are furiously pollenating here on the west coast, sun shining, eagles flying, hands washing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 2:20pm hyde:

@still b/p yeah, i've always heard that first one as "can't sing. can't act. can dance a little"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm ifny:

Unca Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Speaking of movies, i just watched "Hail the Conquering Hero" and yelped with surprise when the protagonists father's name was Hinky Dinky!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Uncle Michael:

what?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm ifny:

Loved the Louis Jordan number, however I believe the word "Five" snuck into the track name. He played a Tympany Five, not just one :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Michael 98145:

You never let us down, UM. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm ifny:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

thanks ifny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

Aww, Michael...thanks.
Avatar 2:26pm still b/p:

My favorite Fred number is in "Swing Time," when Fred pulls Ginger into a routine to demonstrate to the grumpy dance studio boss what Ginger has "taught" him. It's simple and joyful to watch, without the gimmicks and elaborate staging concepts of his other musicals, especially later ones.

Greetings from my "at home" outpost
Avatar 2:27pm hyde:

the only good wrap is a house made tortilla
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

an old pal of mine says "extry" so i would like "extry sweepuns!" please!
Avatar 2:27pm Listening Out There:

"Uncle Miguel"
  2:28pm Funky16Corners:

That’s how I refer to TV shows with casts made up largely of cast members of older shows: TV sweepings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm melinda:

Eww, Long John Silver's wrap sounds horrid. I always avoided wraps because they usually involve crappy tortillas.

Greetings from Lincoln, NE uNcle Michael!
Avatar 2:30pm hyde:

@melinda exactly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Alex In Illinois:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

right here, UM! I love you! I am so grateful for all the devoted folx keeping WFMU available for us.
Avatar 2:32pm barrett785:

Living just north of Long John's makes for smelly days come summer.
  2:32pm Funky16Corners:

Noyce....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm melinda:

Also, re: wraps, not everything pairs well with tortilla.
Avatar 2:32pm burke:

@Alex you content yourself at Buona Beef?
Avatar 2:33pm hyde:

i saw the Feelies last year in Cambridge and they were SO GOOD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Lizardner Dave 2:

It's not Long John Sliver's but for a while back in the 1990s some friends and I used to smoke a little something and then go to the Beefsteak Charlie's all you can eat shrimp buffet and get pitchers of the cheapest beer possible with it. Might've been Schaefer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm doctorjazz:

Lou Reed came to mind first to me as well.
  2:36pm Marie:

Hey Alex in Illinois--I used to go to that Long John Silvers (I grew up in Forest Park)--my family was always seeking out new fried fish options. And I proudly carry on that tradition :>) Where do you live?

Hi Ho, I'm the King of Give Peace A Chance Land!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Louis Armstrong performed "Give Peace a Chance" at his last-ever recording session, in May 1970.
  2:46pm Funky16Corners:

That album has some cool stuff on it. Satchmo riffing with Leon Thomas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm ifny:

Wow, thanks Doug. Had no idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Yes. A gobsmacking album. He does "Creator Has a Master Plan" with Leon Thomas. When I heard that for the first time, over the car radio in Washington, DC, I nearly ran off the road.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm ifny:

And thanks Dan! I'll pass that around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm chresti:
