So, all of today's cassettes are sort of atypical for Tape Hiss -- oddities and soddities, maybe....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm

This is such an odd song. This vocalist does work, and yet, that makes it work. Love that synth

Aha -- thanks, Jake. I'll check that out post-show.

Cmurtha:

How does a mixtape work for the purposes of Radio? Does some poor soul have to track down these people to give them a penny? OR CONSPIRACY TIME - Do you as the secret creator of the tape get the penny.
Avatar 12:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Good question -- there are lots of radio hits mixed in here.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
listener james from westwood:

LOL, that "Oh my gawd ... Harry!" was from an old glasses ad.
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

If you're wondering: yes, this whole tape is mono.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Cmurtha:

What a topical tape
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

This side of the tape is a lot more audio collagey -- side B is more of a straight mixtape.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Cmurtha:

A Cowboy's work is never done is a mad underplayed Sonny and Cher song.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Sem:

Is this a first, Sonny and Cher on the Drummer stream?
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Could be!
Avatar 12:36pm

Tho I can see Uncle Michael playing them....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm

Right you are. UM would do that.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Cmurtha:

That was poetry, and now its lost forever...Tears in Rain and all that.
Avatar 12:44pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, delayed response to Cmurtha above: I am most definitely not the maker of this tape. Someone gave it to me, or I bought it in a thrift store somewhere -- just can't remember where it came from.
Avatar 12:47pm
Tony Coulter:

Did anyone recognize the song that ended side A?
Avatar 12:50pm
Tony Coulter:

I suppose this could even be an aircheck tape
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Yvang:

By the way, is this a (mystery) LP cover on the background?
Avatar 12:54pm
Tony Coulter:

Interesting: No star is appearing next to the sides of this tape, because I credited it to "??"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
Cmurtha:

Yeah, no star shows up if thats blank. Typos or variance in attribution (both in albums and by djs) can also let you clicky-star the same song twice. I think I have 2-3 doubles because of that.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Yvang:

Can't show your appreciation fr "Unknow" neither
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Yvang:

I mean unknown
Avatar 12:58pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: It is! Forgot to mention that.

So, can anyone ID today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes? Here are some clues: It's Brit jazz rock from the '70s with links to lots of bands: Blossom Toes, Battered Ornaments, Mike Westbrook, even Magma. Any guesses?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Yvang:

Which is outrageous for WFMU
Avatar 12:58pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Yvang:

Gong?
Avatar 1:01pm
Tony Coulter:

Good guess -- but, no. It's a more obscure band, with only one album.
Avatar 1:04pm
Tony Coulter:

The cover art reminds me slightly of "Nursery Crime," by Genesis.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Yvang:

Or a Rothko painting?
Avatar 1:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Any other guesses? You don't want to miss out on today's big prizes. I'll do the big reveal in 5 minutes.
Avatar 1:06pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: The cover is less abstract that the portion I used would suggest.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Actually, to make things harder: I used the back cover.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Cmurtha:

One of the odder James Bond songs
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm

Some songs on this tape are strangely accurate with the current state of the world...
Avatar 1:11pm

Guess we're always on the brink of disaster....
Avatar 1:12pm

And .... today's mystery LP is .... Mirage's "Now You See It...": www.discogs.com...

Hello Tony and listeners. I read that a distillery in Portland was making sanitizer now. A troubling reversal of how things have worked for centuries
Avatar 2:22pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Fred! Hadn't heard that....
Avatar 2:26pm
Listening Out There:

@fred, et al: Smart move by the distillery. Some folks are using vodka or Everclear for hand sanitizing.
Avatar 2:26pm
Listening Out There:

...the distiller can create a "boutique" product and survive the slowdown in business!
Avatar 2:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Here in Portland I've noticed that while business in restaurants has dropped of a lot, food carts seems to be doing OK. (Not a scientific study, just random observation, but....)
  2:38pm
Dean:

But random observation is fundamental to scientific study!

the last track reminded me strongly of a song from the early 80s that got played on fmu a lot then, on the punk shows...so close, but i can't think of it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm

no but good guess chresti!
this is narrated in front of a wall of swirling distorted guitars and a medium-slow beat. he talks about these good students who were dating then "pretending to be drunk" and crashed the car...
