I have been broadcasting songtaculars since before Mary was born!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

I'm going to an opera tonight. The tickets were a Valentine's Day present to my dear Jessie. It's called The Last American Hammer. It could be pretty good or really awful. We'll see.

Here's a description:

"Milcom Negley, a one-man militia, rages against the tyranny of federal overreach. He is hunkered down in a rural Toby jug museum where Tink Enraught, a mannered curatrix, offers him tea and cookies. Milcom is a “Thirteenther” – a conspiracy theorist who believes an obscure, wouldbe Thirteenth amendment negates the authority of our government. He occupies the museum because it is the only place left in his failed town to receive federal funds – a grant for the upkeep of a rare 17th-century British pitcher known as “Sir Oswyn”.

Although Milcom expects to be swarmed by military drones, attention is paid only by Agent Reyes, a young rookie FBI field specialist. Milcom explains that the town’s only major source of employment – a hammer manufacturer – has gone under, leaving the residents lost. He is armed with “the Last American Hammer” to roll off the plant’s line and intends to hold a proxy trial against the US government using Toby jugs as physical stand-ins for a court."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

Also this:

"The key differences between the Hindustani and Carnatic systems are: Hindustani music is raga based while Carnatic is kriti-based. Hindustani stresses pure notes versus the gamaka-based Carnatic ragas. ... The sarangi is a major accompaniment in Hindustani, while the violin reigns in Carnatic."

So...what are you Ghana play next?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am pantz:

How are yinz in Pittsburgh? Ready for the Bucs to round the bases?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Yeah, I was sticking only to the Burt Bacharach-Hal David tune, not the music Sonny Rollins actually wrote for the film. I did play a snippet of the Rollins "theme" song, however. And Rahsaan Roland Kirk quoted the Sonny Rollins melody at the end of his piece.
Avatar 11:23am Brian in UK:

The quality of the punnery must improve for the MARATHON.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

I think the Pirates could be historically bad this year. I cheer for them, sure, but I retain my Mets love from my NYC years. And (speaking of historically bad) my Orioles love from my Maryland years.)
Avatar 11:25am Brian in UK:

Doug, are you a capricious team supporter, not for life but where you happen to pitch up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am pantz:

As a Reds fan, I share your allegiance to historically bad teams.
  11:26am Listener Gregory:

Sonny Rollins also did a version of the Bacharach song, which was a hit to the degree a jazz song is a hit.
(Returned to my computer; my lurking hours are over.)
  11:27am Dean:

Complete change of subject here: I learned two days ago that the highly anticipated (by me) house concert by DKV Trio in Berkeley in June has been cancelled. The reason? Ken Vandermark can't find any other Bay Area venues eager to book the group! We are an embarrassment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

@pantz
At least the Reds seem to have a pulse. They are "trying." The Pirates ownership just shafts the teams' fans and laughs all the way to the bank.
Avatar 11:27am βrian:

The Reds use to have a farm team in the Socialist Republic of Burlington. Bernie was mayor, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Did Rollins actually cover the Bacharach-David tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Jeff Golick:

There's a fascinating Q&A with Sonny Rollins over at the NYT site, for those interested. www.nytimes.com...
  11:29am Dean:

That Rollins interview is fantastic.

Please note, comment at 11:25 was not meant to have any vaguely humorous undertones.

Avatar 11:32am Brian in UK:

Doug, do not take your work home with you.
  11:36am Listener Gregory:

OK, I may have lied about Rollins playing the Bacharach song. At least, there's no sign of it on YouTube. I will join you in the Memory Ward, Doug, because I still have a memory of it.
  11:36am rw:

Good morning! It's Friday.
Avatar 11:36am Brian in UK:

Been thinking this week that there are many folks who are lacking a sense of humour, is it innate or taught, no idea, cannot live without it, personally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Only the contagious part, Brian in UK.

Howdy, rw!
  11:37am Funky16Corners:

This Johnny Copeland is wild!
Avatar 11:38am Brian in UK:

That was a three minute genre on its own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

@Funky16Corners
Yeah, right?! Kinda doo-woppy.
  11:39am Funky16Corners:

  11:40am John from Florham park:

@Doug great selection of music for the 3 hour’s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
Doowoppier is my new favorite word.

@John from Florham park
It's the least I can do.

Got Doug's premium last year not sure if I can get another unless under medical supervision.
Avatar 11:45am Brian in UK:

...and these did not make it onto the Premium, for crying out gently it must be nuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Actually, I think this Major Smith has made the final cut for the premium. I have to whittle 150 minutes of KILLER material down to 70. Wish me luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Apologies to those of you whose hearts are melting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Sorry not sorry.
Avatar 11:49am burke:

I'll bet Tiny Watkins was at least 6'4"
Avatar 11:49am sinner:

Mobile, Alabama's Tiny Watkins. Damn, son.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am WR:

Jeff @11:28, thanks for the link. Rollins is such a thoughtful and eloquent creative soul. I saw him speak a couple times in the early 90s and learned so much. More than jazz trivia, historic notes, but about being honest and generous. The interview continues that path.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

@burke
You know the deal!

Greetings, WR!
  11:51am Listener Gregory:

Last chance for sanity: Stan Getz did a version of the Bacharach Alfie on an album my parents had, so... maybe that's what I remember? God help me.
Avatar 11:51am βrian:

Actually, I have no heart. As you can see, it's been removed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
Next year I'll produce Heartsmelters.
  11:53am Mr C:

Stan Getz did a whole album of Bacharach/David songs on Verve.
Avatar 11:53am Brian in UK:

Good luck for the next two weeks, Doug. Support the Boss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Uncle Michael:

I. Said. Self.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

This James Ellis track is amazing, but it's too positive for More Heartmelters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am pantz:

This James Ellis is fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
You're right. That's funny. It should be...
