A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

first heard “Dead” via Ede Robin’s version that was on one of those awesome Trikont comps (“Down & Out: The Sad Soul of the Black South”). what a song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Passaic River Blues:

@Mr. Wolf: that sounds like a fantastic comp.--must investigate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Handy Haversack:

Morning, @Phillippe!

@Snoochie, the music venues I've looked at in Nashville so far look depressingly corporate -- that's why I was hoping an FMUer would have advice.
  10:00am Mike Wolf:

@passaic It’s killer. Not a ton of photos but a fun booklet in German and English, 24 songs, only a few artists known to me (at the time I got it, it came out in ’98 or ’99 I think)...

Is today part of marathon spring training, Trouble?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Ike:

Bloomberg was pathetic. That dingbat has no charisma or passion and you need that to win a presidential election, not just mountains of cash. They justifiably ripped him several new holes. At least most of the other candidates seemed energetic and lively. Even Biden seemed lucid for once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Trouble:

yes @bill w it is! up in the cheap seats in studio b, getting ready for the action. don't know if i'm emotionally ready for the season opener...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar 10:52am βrian:

Glad to hear Bloomberg got pummeled. He's got no business being there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Ike:

@KFHP, to be fair, that would make any conflict interesting. Need to liven up a corporate retreat? Reanimate Teddy Roosevelt! Need to break up a wild boar fight? Reanimate Teddy Roosevelt! Got a boring standard zombie apocalypse? Reanimate Teddy Roosevelt, he'll be the fun one!
Avatar 10:54am Snoochienucci:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Handy Haversack:

@Mike Wolf, I think it's Todd-o-Phonic Todd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am melinda:

@snoochie that would be fun. Agree about the dems. Maine now has a primary election in addition to the caucus so hopefully I can avoid the humongous lines that the caucuses have been experiencing for the last, I no longer have the enthusiasm to make the standing and waiting worthwhile.
  11:03am John from Florham park:

@Ike @KFHP @Snooch I have made an effort not to wstch any of the debates and would rather hear or read about it on the news the next morning so I don’t get so pissed about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am melinda:

*for the last 2 elections*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am melinda:

Enjoying the tunes today Trub!
  11:07am John from Florham park:

@Melinda used to be a news junkie.would spend all day watching either cable news or cspan, now I can’t deal with it that much
Avatar 11:11am Snoochienucci:

@JFFP i agree about getting pissed, but tbh the news is so skewed on both sides i kinda like to watch the whole thing on my own and come to my own conclusions. With the whole impeachment fiasco i watched/listened to just about every day of it. Cuz i knew whatever is reported about again on both sides is mostly BS and headliners to try and skew the sheeple. But thats enough politics from me! lol back to happy land of wfmu

OMG this story reminds me of This American Life about a very smart girl who was promised all sorts of educational scholarships everyone thought she went off to Vassar or something.. but then no one could find her anymore, turns out she just missed out on life changing opportunities was a cashier at Key Food or something heart-breaking story, I was crying.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Handy Haversack:

Trouble, Kate has a class of first-graders who are learning this song!

She also works with NYC HS kids and sees that story you told played out year after year, again and again.

Everybody knows the game is fixed. The poor stay poor and the rich get rich.

Until we tear it down and start over.

Avatar 11:15am jt:

I don't know about you guys but I am still pissed about NOT getting those Harriet Tubman Twenties... we should get Nina Simone fifties..
  11:17am peter in SEA:

Thank you for that important information, Trouble. But the rest of us DO KNOW this story, even if one doesn't work in education, we've been screaming it for years and what is happening about it? Almost nothing! We have to hold our elected officials accountable on this! Our tax dollars are being squandered!
Avatar 11:17am jt:

AG My Niece went to WW and loved it , they are still down there, making their way in the world,
  11:18am Alexei:

its not really funny at all to hear the story about the poor girl, still, a bit weird to hear almost communist approach from a dj, there was USSR some time ago, where all education was absolutely free for all the races, religions, ages etc., but it was the USA who dragged us into capitalism. and now you say how bad is it to pay 80 grand a year for the U? its the same everywhere now.

  11:29am ?:

Thanks Trouble, great set of Nina tunes...Hail to the Queen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Passaic River Blues:

@Carmichael: for one thing, Bloomberg was fundraising and campaigning for GOP governor and senate campaigns as recently as *2016*--meaning he helped preserve McConnell's majority, but now he's a Democrat? Also, as many have commented elsewhere, he blamed poor homeowners in Brooklyn and southeast Queens for the foreclosure crisis rather than the scum lenders who preyed on them with misleading predatory loans or the scum titans of finance who repackaged risky loans and transmuted them into allegedly risk-free investments. He ramped up the NYPD's stop-and-frisk policy despite explicitly acknowledging it targeted black and Latinos and resulted in arrests something like less than 1% of the time.
  11:30am prudy:

Queen comment from me...
  11:30am Alexei:

don`t tell me jt, I`m not only Russian, I`m also Italian citizen. you wouldn`t want to get Italian education even for free. and I got mine in GB as an Italian, yes, it was like 1500 GBP a year back then, but now it is about GBP 6000
  11:31am Ike:

@Alexei what’s your point? People aren’t countries. And there’s more than 2 ways to do things, as JT said. The evil fake socialist totalitarianism of the USSR shouldn’t ruin everything and make everyone a right-winger forever.

The dead don't talk about health insurance, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am tim from champaign (now washington):

I wonder what 70s Nina Simone backed by Gil Scott-Heron's Midnight Band would have sounded like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Handy Haversack:

My health insurance insures that if I have a health crisis, I will be beggared only unto seen generations and not until the actual heat death of the universe. So that's something. Thanks, capitalism. Good looking out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Handy Haversack:

That I did the trick poorly is the worst insult of all.
  11:39am JakeGould:

For anyone who wants to know how “great” the U.S. health insurance system is, just look at this Reddit AMA from 2014 or so: “I was mauled by a bear, fought it off, and drove 4 miles down a mountain with my face hanging off. AMA”

Then in the AMA itself: “What do you find the hardest to overcome on your path back to recovery?”

Her answer? “Blue Cross. Hands down.”

A bear literally ripped her face and the health insurance is the worst part of this… Because it lasts forever…

  11:40am Alexei:

I have no point Ike, it is just funny sometimes to see people discuss obvious things in this mode. the funniest though is Russia`s "influence" on the US elections etc. Imagine: at the times of R.Reagan, would anybody ever even speak aloud that USSR have ifluence on anything in US, even a public toilet in Harlem NY? was that possible at all?
medicine was free for all in the USSR too, ha ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Passaic River Blues:

@Tim: oh my god, Nina on the piano, Gil on the Rhodes, and Brian Jackson on a moog!

Gah, sorry, Trouble. This set is so good. But it angries up the blood!
  11:41am JakeGould:

@Alexei: That is part of the reason we all feel like our brains are turning upside down.

I've never understood the notion that a health insurer can choose not to cover treatment. Why is that legal? I mean, offer insurance or don't offer insurance.

In the good news category, that dude who got in that horrible wreck at the end of the Daytona 500 walked out of the hospital on his own power yesterday. Takes a 2 ton racecar to the head and walks away. Amazing
