@David, now it might be that the car wasn't as dead as we thought ... mulling!
Avatar 12:21pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Thanks for playing my theme song Joe...of course I'm referring to "Stupidity".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm David (in London):

@Handy - Don't know if (like me) you've named your car? If not, Lazarus might seem to be quite appropriate now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm David (in London):

I know we're probably supposed to keep links to a minimum and all, but **** it, here are Dr Feelgood playing on home turf in Southend, Essex in the mid 1970s and it rocks. Man, I love this.

Good point, David! Hadn't named one since Melmoth the Wanderer ...

G E Smith played with Electric Hot Tuna a few years ago at the Stone Pony Summer Stage - had not seen him since SNL

Big Quiet, guessing the Go-Go's are there biggest influence.

Is it true that Billi Eyelash likes the Eyelids?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Handy Haversack:

Realized we're not going to be able to make the Eyelids Waffle Ganza -- we march (stagger) in the Tartan Day Parade that same Saturday in Manhattan.

Avatar 12:50pm Joe B:

handy, eyelids are at tv eye the night before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm David (in London):

@Handy - What kind of car (model) was Melmoth?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm LW Rhino:

@Listener Phillip: Oh ,so you're one on those.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Handy Haversack:

David, Melmoth was a 1983 Buick LeSabre Ltd. 22' of American hubris. Like driving your couch. Sadly gave up most of its life saving me from a telephone pole -- but then still drove halfway across the country.

Lazarus is(?) a 2003 Toyota Corolla. Not a lot of charm, but it consistently actually works -- engine and transmission are great. But stuff that can age is aging -- catalytic converter, radiator ...

@Joe B: Just realizing that about TV Eye! Thanks!
Avatar 1:03pm Hubig Pie:

I was hearing Pleasant Valley Sunday there for a moment
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hiya, Joe and three chord crowd. Someone this weekend mentioned a Kim Shattuck benefit coming up in L.A. March 15. www.bigtakeover.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm David (in London):

@Handy - I just looked up the 1983 Buick LeSabre. Oh man, that's just my absolute mental image of an American car. Bugger the Dodge Charger, that LeSabre requires Don Felder's 'Heavy Metal' to play every time it goes down the street. And well, the Corolla might not be so romantic, but it gets the job done. Mine is a 1997 Nissan Primera, in psychedelic / Prince type purple. And mine, too, had to have a new cat last summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm David (in London):

Hey Ken.
Avatar 1:09pm Hubig Pie:

Nothin' says "Murica" like a Crown Vic
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Handy Haversack:

@David -- I bought Melmoth from a friend who had driven it from Cincinatti to Seattle and back but had bought from his grandmother, who had *literally* only used it to drive to church. It had 60K miles on it when I got it. But it was semi-wrecked after the phone pole and was a lot of car to deal with parking when I moved back to NYC in my midtwenties. Alas for Melmoth, Melmoth the Wanderer!

13 mpg highway! 9 in the city!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm coelacanth∅:

Fuck Yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm coelacanth∅:

-maybe my favorite shocking blue song!
-great version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

(and hi Joe!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm David (in London):

@Handy - I will be raising a small glass of Scotch to Melmoth's memory later this evening.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Handy Haversack:

Kate has a gig 4/3, it turns out, at Branded in Prospect Heights, which is just a little far from Ridgewood for me to attempt any Mrs. Doubtfire-style shenanigans.

@David, thanks, friend! Now I'm going to have to drink scotch, too, to honor your honoring Melmoth!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Hoboken Jack:

How about a live set from the Schmenge Bros Reenactment Society

HELL YEAH, DNC! Man, I love Kevn Kinney! This sounds great, Joe!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Handy Haversack:

_Scarred but Smarter_ is one of my all-time favorite albums. Formative for me.
Avatar 1:43pm northguineahills:

I get it. I didn't like Midnite Vultures when it came out. 10 years later, all of a sudden it clicked, and now I dig it....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm coelacanth∅:

Neil Young did make one album that i couldn't enjoy one moment of. i tried 3 times! thought there had to be something for me there -but no.
Avatar 1:44pm Joe B:

he's probably got a few like that
Avatar 1:45pm Joe B:

midnite vultures - same for me, well, didn't take 10 years but i eventually got into it and realize it now for the classic that it is.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Hoboken Jack:

I was listening to Hyperspace this weekend; I like most of it quite a lot (including this one)
Avatar 1:46pm northguineahills:

Hyperspace is like the 70s meets the 90s, meets the 2000s, great album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm coelacanth∅:

i should check out that album. i'm not much into Beck, in general; i like sea change though. i haven't heard that many of his albums. probably 1/2 of them.
Avatar 1:53pm Joe B:

it's a lot to wade through
Avatar 1:53pm northguineahills:

Always got mad respect for Anti- Recs, after they put out the last few Merle Haggard Records. They were a staple since my HS days (ok, Epitaph Recs), and putting out Dream Syndicate is just icing on the cake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm coelacanth∅:

i suppose this is the most challenging album for many Neil Young fans. it was for me until i read about his inspiration for it. then it clicked.
...far from my favorite! but i appreciate it.
Avatar 2:00pm Chud:

@coelacanth∅, well I like the cover art! A start I guess
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Handy Haversack:

What was the inspiration, @coela?
  2:01pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Does anyone remember the Inca dance craze that Neil song inspired & enflamed? No? Me neither.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm mariano:

@coela: NY's Shocking Pinks would be a challenge too, I'd imagine. I frickin' love that video for Wonderin' though, he looks so absolutely demented in it!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Handy Haversack:

Dungaroos Kipawah! It's Michael from Bar 81! Manny and I figured out your secret identity!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm coelacanth∅:

Handy he has a son with cerebral palsy and communication was an issue. the album was inspired by the different methods he tried to get through (hence the appearance of vocoder on a NY album) and the repetition of trying to get a point across.
...(along those lines anyway)
  2:06pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

@Handy: Neil & family were involved in an intensive therapy sessions with their son who had CP & was unable to speak. Apparently the songs & style partially evolved from Neil trying to communicate with his son.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm coelacanth∅:

right. i should clarify that a lot of it was about not Neil trying to get through to his son, but the other way around.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, guys.

@Dungaroos Kipawah: Manny and I will come find you for a beer one of these weeks! We haven't had softball games at ERP and 10th in a while ...
  2:11pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Hey Michael!! Long time, man. Good to hear from you & yr secret id too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm coelacanth∅:

mariano that's the one! that album's a disaster!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Handy Haversack:

Ha! All my secrets revealed. Manny showed me your NYE post -- I think about the Bar 81 days all the damn time, and those we won't see again. Glad to see you still have great taste in music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm coelacanth∅:

(it does have "payola blues" though, which has potential, i think!)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Hoboken Jack:

Trivia: What is the local connection between the Surrender Your Poppy Field lp and the Hey Kid ep?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm coelacanth∅:

(mariano -never saw the video)
Avatar 2:14pm Joe B:

same studio?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Hoboken Jack:

Correct, Ray Ketchem's Magic Door studio in Montclair. Though I think GBV only recorded drums there this time.
  2:17pm pgalub:

Great show, Joe!
Avatar 2:18pm Joe B:

that is probably why i like the recent albums so much. the lo fi thing i know was their trademark but the novelty wore off decades ago for me.magic door is magic!
Avatar 2:21pm Joe B:

thanks pete!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm mariano:

@coela: it's so deliciously weird, could've been directed by David Lynch: www.youtube.com...
  2:28pm McGroovey:

I used to but everything I could get my hands on by GBV, but I had to start buying other people's records at some point. like Mike Adams!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm David (in London):

@Mariano - That's such a great video. As you say, even Lynch could barely have done it better. You'd be breaking out in a cold sweat if Neil approached you at the beach looking like that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Hoboken Jack:

I also used to buy every GBV release, then sold several back as it was getting ridiculous quantity wise. But I've been buying these last few/several.
Avatar 2:34pm Joe B:

I have gotten the last six -- the six with the current lineup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm mariano:

Yeah, totally, David! When I first saw it on MTV in the 80s I was absolutely gobsmacked. He looked like some wino you'd see at the bus depot! At that age I was really only aware of NY as the guy who sang Heart of Gold, so I had no way to process what I was seeing. I've always respected things that leave me gobsmacked and completely unable to figure out whether I loathe or love them.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Hoboken Jack:

That was a particularly great Brother JT track. Trivia: What do Surrender Your Poppy Field, Hey Kid, and Tornado Juice have in common?
Avatar 2:37pm Joe B:

I DONT KNOW
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm coelacanth∅:

thanks mariano i'll check that out later
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Hoboken Jack:

Tornado J also recorded at Magic Door
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Handy Haversack:

@mariano, speaking of NY, winos, and "Heart of Gold," one my all-time heroes remains the guy using the polished, camera-concealing surface above a Brooklyn Citibank ATM --in the bank -- as a mirror to comb out his long golden locks while singing "Heart of Gold" at top volume and balancing is half-empty bottle of white wine on the ATM counter. At 9 AM on a Saturday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm mariano:

Oh man, that's peak Brooklyn there, Handy!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Handy Haversack:

Guy should have a Medal of Freedom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm David (in London):

@mariano - If Lynch ever does manage to get a fourth series of Twin Peaks off the ground, NY should reprise his role in the Wonderin' video and make a guest appearance. It worked for Bowie...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm David (in London):

@Handy - Full 'Up-all-night' points to that man!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Handy Haversack:

But he still cared about good grooming and Canadian rock and roll. We are living in a society!
  2:51pm matty from brooklyn:

Joe I rarely get to listen to your show live, but the restaurant was slow so I bailed out early and have been listening while painting the living room.
Always enjoy the show, and today's was a really good one. Thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm mariano:

That would be incredible, David!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks for another great show, Joe. Mondays are the best. Good times with the Montebanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm David (in London):

Hot rocking tonight Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm mariano:

Thanks Joe, take care everyone, nice gabbin' as usual!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Joe!
  7:29am Georgio:

Killer Kin is HOT! thanks joe!
