Wow Delphine, totally enjoying your mix whilst making a late night curry!
  10:30pm Carmichael:

Have never heard that Mothers track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm mariano:

Oh man, I remember so clearly the first time I saw/heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo- it was on SNL in the 80s and Paul Simon was the musical guest. And instead of performing during one of his slots, he introduced LBM, and they sang "Homeless", all in traditional dress. It was so unexpected, one of the best musical moments on that show. It felt like the whole country sat there with their mouths open for a few seconds after.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm ParUbi:

Hey everyone! I believe this is the first time for me, Delphine
Avatar 10:39pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 10:41pm Hubig Pie:

Saw LBM at NOLA jazz fest , I'm sure they played there more than once
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm mariano:

Right coelacanth∅? 80s were great for late-night TV: SNL, Letterman when he was still at NBC, Night Flight on USA Channel, PBS playing SCTV and Monty Python regularly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm mb:

Currently in the middle of a stroll down a long, skinny hallway that is the WFMU 'Prize Warehouse.' Just saw a 2013 SUW calendar on the wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Devin B.:

Wow - loved that DJ Female Convict Scorpion piece with the Thrones sample a while back. Great show!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm mariano:

When I lived in Carroll Gardens, my neighbor across the street was Michael Blake, Canadian sax player who was (is?) in the Lounge Lizards, really nice guy. Wait, mb, you're in the FMU Prize Warehouse? That would be like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory for me!
Avatar 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

to be honest i rarely watched tv during that time and i don't remember under what circumstances i saw that episode of snl. i was already familiar with ladysmith black mambazo though, thanks to a very cool aunt. (also rest in peace)
Avatar 10:48pm Franco Twinkie:

My mom has a room mate at the facility where she will be for a few more days and she always starts complaining as soon as I walk in the room. My mom is sensitive to light and the room mate is blind. My mom started putting a towel over her TV, then just starting yanking out the cord. Last week she missed SNL and was totally pissed. When I told her yesterday my mom was leaving in few day she said GOOD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm mariano:

Ah yes, cool aunts and uncles - starting around age 7, I took to hanging out in my uncle Eric's room to listen to tunes. He was into Zappa, Beefheart, Mahavishnu, the NY punk bands... He'd play all his records and tell me about the bands, the scenes they were from. Always been extremely grateful for that little pocket of my childhood, it's basically when I became aware of music as something other than pretty tunes.
Avatar 10:51pm coelacanth∅:

more like the beatles, hollies and Crosby Stills Nash & Young -together...of south africa!
Avatar 10:54pm coelacanth∅:

Franco next time you go you should tell her the plans have changed and your mom's leaving in 10 weeks.
Avatar 10:54pm Franco Twinkie:

My mom got pounded senseless with Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, so much so that she started whistling Cruising For Burgers from Uncle Meat. She was a great whistler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm ParUbi:

that's not super easy to whistle
Avatar 10:57pm coelacanth∅:

mariano i knew my aunt was mad cool and appreciated her gifts (of knowledge and of material items) but i still feel i didn't take proper advantage of it, and probably didn't convey adequately that i thought she rocked.
... is your uncle still amongst us?
  10:59pm Carmichael:

I drove mom crazy with prog rock. Once, I came home with a friend and slapped down the vinyl I just bought. She snatched it up and said, “God, not more Caravan? What’s wrong with ELP?” She liked the Emerson piano ...
Avatar 11:00pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, I actually feel sorry for her. She is one of those people that just got dumped by her family. No one ever comes to visit her. My mom can be a clueless hand full that is always jumping up and down like a spring at all hours of the night.
Avatar 11:01pm coelacanth∅:

haha...i'm guessing my mother hated my ELP phase!
Avatar 11:02pm Franco Twinkie:

I never, ever subjected my mom to ELP.
  11:02pm Carmichael:

Wow, Stephen Wilson! Very nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm mariano:

Yeah, coela, matter of fact just saw my uncle earlier. He's only 8 years older than me so he's kind of like an older brother, and he's as cool as ever, good guy.
Avatar 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

Franco, okay. i never met her. (either her)
  11:03pm Carmichael:

Speaking of prog ...
Avatar 11:04pm Franco Twinkie:

My mom is daffy but lovable. Her room mate is real smart.

Avatar 11:07pm coelacanth∅:

that's beautiful mariano!
my aunt was my father's twin, checked out 9-10 years ago. i think the 2 didn't speak for at least the last 5 years of her life and barely for 10-20. they were extremely different than each-other.
  11:07pm Carmichael:

@mariano, my nephew is 9 years younger than I. Same relationship there.
Avatar 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

Franco i've gotten a pretty positive impression of your mom, all in all
  11:12pm Carmichael:

@franco, do you have a profile pic of your mom reading an album cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm mariano:

I'm sorry to hear about that, coelacanth. I'm trying my best to stay close to my relatives now after years of living far away from them. That's cool, Carmichael - aunts and uncles are gold!
  11:19pm Carmichael:

Thanks for all this GOF stuff, Delphine!
Avatar 11:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Carmichael, yeah, that's my mom, about Christmas time.
Avatar 11:20pm javakid:

bush tetras on fmu this coming week.
Avatar 11:27pm coelacanth∅:

mariano yeah same old shit -can't seem to find the time. bullshit, she lived right in nyc -never drove, only flew; me within 1/2 an hour's drive on and off until 2002. always wanted to but put it off put it off.
i wrote a song about my mistake right after she died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm mb:

Just got out of the 'Prize Warehouse' only to find out that i should NOT BE in the 'Prize Warehouse' until after the fundraiser. Guess i'm going to have to put back that Scottify CD i've been saving up for..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm mariano:

That's rough, coelacanth. That's pretty much what happened with a great-aunt and great-uncle I was really close to when I was a kid, didn't talk to them for years, before they died. Something about being young or even youngish, when it seems everyone's gonna be around forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm mb:

((Vibes)) coel. Wouldn't mind hearing that song if ya got a link.

Speaking of Ronnie Ray Gun, I just remembered this 80s video mashup of Ron and Nancy's anti-drug broadcast from the White House: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Out here, we got the full Reagan way before the rest of the country. A friend of mine told me he came to his junior high when he was a shill for G.E. Reagan used the analogy of a pile of dollar bills that reached the moon to explain the national debt.
  11:50pm Carmichael:

I was here then, Franco. Berkeley ....
Avatar 11:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh man, that must have been something! My brother-in-law was there during a big demonstration. His mom and dad saw him on TV walking thru a cloud of teargas.
