A two-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

my favourite era of their work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Rich in Washington:

Good ear, edelkakao cha cha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, sort of a peak era for them. I like lots of their phases but this period is pretty good.
Avatar 7:35pm edelkakao cha cha:

it is the best, dear rich
Avatar 7:36pm edelkakao cha cha:

well who is the voice-over person?
Avatar 7:38pm edelkakao cha cha:

the label who released the album also released the last TG, i.e. Journey Through A Body
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Rich in Washington:

That's the late Jack Van Impe, the scamvangelist who loved to rail about rock n' roll immorality - like that' s a BAD thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Rich in Washington:

I am sort of tempted to do a very early Laibach set sometime.
Avatar 7:39pm ironybread:

Was Jack the source of the Pastor Dick sample "Grape juice! Grape juice! Grape juice!"?

Avatar 7:44pm edelkakao cha cha:

this is actually better than here come the warm jets ( Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy I mean)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Rich in Washington:

I think that was from an Van Impe radio program. Seems like I've heard a longer excerpt somewhere. perhaps OTE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Rich in Washington:

I love both albums nearly equally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Kat in Chicago:

Just tuned in. Meow-meow-Mao!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Rich in Washington:

I love the pure studio chaos of the first one a bit better.
Avatar 7:47pm geezerette:

"Tiger Mountain" so lovely,wistful...
Avatar 7:47pm edelkakao cha cha:

both have their virtues, but while the former is "legendary" this one is so very underrated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm ParUbi:

Cassettes are coming back why?
Avatar 7:49pm edelkakao cha cha:

Why not?
Avatar 7:49pm ironybread:

Correct, the playlist is refreshing itself automatically, growing centimeters all of a sudden like a sneaky stalactite growing hundreds of years of calcium salts in under a second
Avatar 7:49pm geezerette:

Workin' for me,Rich. :)
Therapy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm ARB:

for all the remainders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Kat in Chicago:

Cassettes are cheap to make and you can do short runs of them. Some people like to have the physical media.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm ARB:

yes very enjoying!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm ParUbi:

Huh, that makes sense. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Rich in Washington:

@ironybread: isn't that swell? We have our Kenzo to thank for such wizardry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Kat in Chicago:

One of the world's only two lacquer plants just totally burned down so I reckon even more people are going to take a second look at cassettes. OH WOW THE PLAYLIST JUST DID A COOL THING
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Rich in Washington:

Isn't that awful, Kat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Rich in Washington:

The lacquer plant thing I mean. not the playlist
Avatar 7:54pm edelkakao cha cha:

YES! I have cassettes from Love Records (THE legendary Finnish Record label) from 1970s and they still play OK. Even at the time they were not of the best quality tape to my knowledge? And still they are playable. Now my external hard drive has lovely amounts of music unknown even to its owner but one day it will go COUGH COUGH while the 1970s tapes I have will still be playable
  7:54pm spodiodi:

lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Kat in Chicago:

I also noticed that I'm still signed in from the last time I opened my browser, that has never happened either. Yeah Rich, that is going to have a huge impact on people I know who run small labels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Rich in Washington:

I just found this last night while attending a Eugene Chadbourne show at a venue that happened to sell used records.
Avatar 7:57pm geezerette:

Didn't know about the lacquer plant...(sigh...).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm ParUbi:

So what sort of tape deck do I need? Recommendations?
Avatar 8:00pm edelkakao cha cha:

PArUbi - a simple Yamaha or Aiwa might do. No complaints with these
Avatar 8:00pm geezerette:

Thanks Kat. Heartbreaking is right.
Avatar 8:01pm edelkakao cha cha:

I remember early 2010s when you found tape decks thrown out on the street in Germany (Berlin) for example
Avatar 8:02pm geezerette:

Terry Riley so good!
Avatar 8:02pm ironybread:

This is mind-bending. I did a similar thing with Devo's "Satisfaction" if you're curious
footnoteconspiracy.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Rich in Washington:

Oh man! I need to hear that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Kat in Chicago:

ParUbi, if you have access to a good place that repairs and sells old equipment, I'd say go there. deciBel in Chicago sold me a lovely Sony with soft touch controls for $85. Single-well decks are a better choice than doubles, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Rich in Washington:

The original song being looped is by The Harvey Averne Dozen and it's really beautiful in itself. I was unfamiliar with it until hearing this Riley piece years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Kat in Chicago:

I'm gonna check that out after the show, ironybread. Rich, I've never heard the original.
Avatar 8:05pm edelkakao cha cha:

Kat&Geezerette: this & the Universal fire. on my deathbed I will remember these as the two instances that have changed the history of recorded music so much for the worse (I really hope it will be these two, not too many more to come)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Rich in Washington:

I'll play ironybread's track immediately after this one. The wonderz of the interwebz! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Kat in Chicago:

Oh nice, Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Rich in Washington:

The impact of the Universal fire is lost on the spotify zombies, sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Rich in Washington:

I was folding the station's signal back into the mix. That was too silly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm ParUbi:

Wow! What a sound!

yeah, this is pretty crazy for 1968. You can read about its creation here:

@ParUbi the deck I got is from the early 80s and they fixed it up great. I wouldn't have been able to afford it when it was first manufactured :)
  8:12pm spodiodi:

cool stuff, Rich
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Rich in Washington:

Rich in Washington @8:06: most box set retrospectives have an x amount of outtakes/alt.versions (very often found by accident from the end of a reel etc.), it is tragically mind-boggling to think how many potential ones have been lost.
Avatar 8:16pm geezerette:

"You're No Good" reminds me of Bruc Conners' film,"Breakaway".
