Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 1:21pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Animateed image is indeed very big (7mb). When I clicked, it took a long time before it started playing. If the animated image were instead directly embedded on the page instead of swapped in by a script, the browser would probably start playing it before the whole thing loaded.

I don't think the SSL is relevant, although it would be better if the still and animated images were loaded with https URL's, to avoid the mixed content warning the browsers display now that all playlists are served via SSL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

It wouldn't start playing because that requires a click to toggle. Could be a bottleneck somewhere. 7mb is hardly the biggest I've used. I try to shrink them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Pedro in Arlington:

I keep thinking she's singing about the Mid-Atlantic delicacy, the Half-Smoke.
Avatar 1:28pm WR:

Did coelacanth∅ guess The Pretty Things or commented after the playlist updated? I had no idea, will listen back to if if I can hear The Pretty Things in it. Never have heard any of the Electric Banana compilations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Doug Schulkind:

My afternoon appointment rescheduled due to the snow, so I am here to get hinkified!
  1:29pm spodiodi:

hola, Kenzo -- here's what's happening: the large image post-click is loading slowly -- so slowly, that the wfmu playlist page gets refreshed per usual (at about 30 seconds, maybe a little longer?) anyway -- the gif load then ends, and will not continue to load until the jpg is clicked again
Avatar 1:30pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Image just took my browser 11 seconds to load after clicking. Because of the javascript swap method you use, the browser will do nothing until the image is completely loaded.

If the image were just embedded on the page directly instead of swapped in by the script, it would start playing before the full loading of the image.

Similarly, if the image were embedded using the Image Library, the smaller version would start playing immediately, while the click-to-enlarge version would display a "loading..." indicator until the fuller image fully loaded.
Avatar 1:32pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Also, you seem to have a syntax error in your script/embed code.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm The Oscar:

Pretty sure an Electric Banana track can be heard in Romero's Dawn of the Dead!
  1:33pm dan:

Those openings were similar
  1:33pm spodiodi:

looks like the refresh is more like 60 seconds
Avatar 1:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

If the playlist refresh issue is annoying, Michael, you can be immediately switched over to the new dynamic playlist approach and see how it goes for everyone. (So far, only minor issues remain...) Everyone would have to hit reload, though, or they'd be left in a funny state.
  1:35pm spodiodi:

new dynamic playlist! woohoo! i've been wanting to offer to help.... but here it is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

How about this, Kenzo. Email me. OK?
  1:39pm Listener Robert:

Indeed UM, the other ani-GIF I saved from here was 10 MB. I think Spodiodi's got it figured out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Doug Schulkind:

On the other hand, this Billy Paul track is great!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm doctorjazz:

Must catch Charles Lloyd one of these days.
Avatar 2:17pm Listening Out There:

Great version of Peer Gynt...
  2:18pm dan:

The Who did an odd cover of "...Mountain King" that was a bonus track on the Sell Out reissue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm chresti:

I like ricotta and provolone in a sandwich
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

I'd have that on a meatball sandwich, chresti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Asheville Jon:

how much is it worth if you paid $50? asking for a friend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm doctorjazz:

Melanie has a great voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Asheville Jon:

thanks, i'll let them know that their economic evaluation was inaccurate
Avatar 2:25pm Listening Out There:

"That price for a sandwich? Obviously corruption," said The Great Leader...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm chresti:

I really liked Lay Down/Candles in the Rain, when I was about 12.
Avatar 2:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Big Brother The Holding Company did a great raggedy-ass version of Hall Of The Mountain King on a local TV show in 1966. Janis is wearing a table cloth.
  2:30pm John from Florham park:

@Cheatri loved the version with Edwin Hawkins singers
Avatar 2:34pm Listening Out There:

Record labels get behind the stupidest tunes sometimes. Louis Armstrong was told to keep doing "Hello, Dolly"....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm doctorjazz:

I do really love Satch's Hello Dolly, though.

Charles Lloyd played the Fillmore in the 60s, and performed with The Beach Boys. Did some interesting things back then...
Avatar 2:39pm Franco Twinkie:

There is also an aircheck on KFRC from 1967 with most of the Grateful Dead in the studio talking about whatever. The most surprising part is hearing Pigpen talking!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Doug Schulkind:

More recently, Charles Lloyd has produced some intriguing collaborations with Lucinda Williams. Worth investigating.
Avatar 2:41pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw Charles Lloyd jamming with The Doors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Uncle Michael:

I need that. I may have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Uncle Michael:

Not the Doors...I don't need any Doors. I need the KFRC thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Asheville Jon:

UM: this could be it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

Franco would know. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Doug Schulkind:

unk. should be the title of your memoir, Uncle Michael.
Avatar 2:51pm βrian:

And the guitar went "neener-neener" ...
Avatar 2:51pm Franco Twinkie:

That's it! KFRC was a great AM pop station that jumped on the changes early. In Gimme Shelter, after all the shit went down, you see The Rolling Stones been whisked away in the KFRC news chopper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

Will you write it?
Avatar 2:54pm burke:

Over too soon! Looking forward to that ghost-written memoir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

burke! me too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm spodiodi:

thanks, Uncle Michael! loved the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Uncle Michael:

thanks, spodi! Thank you, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm dutchtheo:

Thanks unk.
  2:58pm dan:

Same time nest week. Thanks UM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm doctorjazz:

The Lloyd/Lucinda Williams album also had Bill Frisell on guitar, nice album. (Have the vinyl)
Frisell put out a fine album with Petra Haden recently as well.
Thanks, UM
Avatar 2:58pm βrian:

And we're out of cheez-whiz!
Avatar 2:58pm Listening Out There:

The end? Thanks bye
Avatar 3:00pm Franco Twinkie:

The End Of The Our Road has a trivia fact attached to it. It was the first song ever played on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 on July 4, 1970
