Hi Sam, is that yard where our horses are?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm

It's worth a check, Chresti. At this point, our horses could be anywhere.

The caption on this photo: "Auto dump at Henderson, May 1972." I believe that's Henderson, NV. Taken by Charles O'Rear.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
coelacanth∅:

72? it looks older. it's hard to tell with the station wagons but i don't see anything looking newer than mid-60s -and mostly 50s, some older
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
coelacanth∅:

(...but then if it's nevada i guess a junk yard would typically contain older cars than a junk yard on the east coast)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Sam Segal:

Well, it is an auto dump, so maybe those cars have been languishing there awhile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Franco Twinkie:

Me too! And totally unapologetic about it. Frank bugs a lot of people and I totally understand why. But still, there was no one else like him.

Interesting, the amount of whitish cars.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Sam Segal:

Hell yeah, Franco! I need to stop defending myself from the cool kids I imagine lurking in the shadows harshly judging my enjoyment of a little Zappa here and there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
coelacanth∅:

Sam, my new theory is that junk yards in the ny/nj/ct area would have many newer cars as well because 1)more traffic=more crashes & 2) lots of car-rotting salt on the roads
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
chresti:

The bodies look fairly straight, as far as I can tell.
  10:25pm
Dean:

Frankly, (and isn't that the best pun so far?!) I think everybody, even the Zappa dislikers, get guilty pleasure from the guy's work. He was too prolific not to produce something for everybody.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
coelacanth∅:

-also, i've been to junk yards (at least 2) that have an age-limit on what they'll accept and what they'll keep. these yards as policy will never have parts for my cars!

chresti i noticed that too. maybe this is a "for restoration" junk yard (is there such a thing?)

Hello Sam and Horsemen!

TDK60:

Maybe that/those buildings in the lower left were re-building shops..
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean i'll say of many artists that i "like with reservations" Zappa is one that it'd be easy to dislike everything from. reason being that the one thing present in everything he did is something that's not present: something along the lines of "soul"; or feeling.
many people absolutely cannot get with purely intellectual music.
  10:32pm
Ike:

This is good!
  10:33pm
Dean:

Nor have I, doc, but when I visited a buddy of mine in CT in the waning years of the '90s I'd wake up for the Zappa memorial on a local radio station. It supplied my Zappa quota for the year, and I loved it. Still, I don't buy the records, except for one...

...namely, Cruisin' with Ruben & the Jets, which is as full of soul as can be.

I have no idea what "purely intellectual" means. None.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

I grew up in an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County where the zoning was lax to non-existence, thus I had my choice of quite a few junk yards to play in. Most of them are gone now, or at least not as chaotic as they were in the 1960's. As kids we really liked Frank Zappa because he seemed understand what life on the other side of the tracks was like. One time on public television he purportedly said "You think there are a lot of drugs in Hollywood, you ought to go to Bassett" Where I grew up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Sam Segal:

Glad you're digging, Ike!
Avatar 10:37pm
TDK60:

Franco, you've weaved it together; maybe the junkyard guys in their workshop are listening to Chunga's Revenge or something.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean, i'm not surprised that you don't know what i mean by that -even though you listen to plenty of it.
(we've discussed it before and i wont elaborate on the obvious)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

TDK, My introduction to The MOI was a bunch of bikers who lived down the street. They had and old panel truck with a FOUR TRACK Ampex tape player with We"re Only In It For The Money on a endless loop.
  10:43pm
Dean:

Xenakis? Brainy, as opposed to sentimental music? Zappa falls on the side of Xenakis? But even so, Xenakis expresses sentiment, too.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
coelacanth∅:

i have to ask, Sam is the episode title a quote from "all the pretty horses"?
Avatar 🥁 10:44pm
northguineahills:

Does Steve Spacek collaborate w/ Sissy Spacek?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Sam Segal:

I don't think so, Coel. It was a phrase that just came to me, although its possible I absorbed something from "All the Pretty Horses" by osmosis. I haven't read it, but you never know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Sam Segal:

Haha, NGH, you'll have to specify...Sissy Spacek the noise band or Sissy Spacek the actor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Frank Zappa could be very sentimental. It just wasn't the type of sentiment many people liked or comprehended.

coelacanth∅:

i mean music that generally (at least) doesn't induce sadness or anger or elation (etc) as a primary response. (elation because of the enjoyment of the music is "secondary". -i'm really not sure my terminology is perfectly appropriate)
Zappa's music is music one listens to and thinks about.
"intellectual".
if reveling in the composition and arrangement and playing (etc) elates you that's different.
"intellectual".
... sentimental and

...emotional are 2 different things.

Going beddy-bye with Zappa on the mind is not a bad thing, as I learned in CT over a couple decades ago. Those were among the most swell nights of my life.

I mean his works, in the way we refer to Beethoven but mean the symphonies, piano sonatas, etc. You know, metonymy. So, take for example Persepolis, which elicits wonder and awe and a degree of puzzlement that I enjoy. (Is being puzzled a purely intellectual condition? I don't think so.)

Some Zappa -- some, not all! -- elicits joy. As rock and roll, it hits all the happy rhythm spots, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Sam Segal:

Gumbo Variations on Hot Rats does provoke ecstatic joy for me, I will say.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth∅:

...i guess i could make an analogy to languages...those that are considered "romantic" or "soft" and others. (not a liguist; don't know the terminology)
-like german, considered "hard" or not especially emotional. some asian languages also; whereas itaian or portuguese are considered to have more feeling.
putting the same point across, but in different manners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Franco Twinkie:

I'll stick in my two cents, Coel. Stuff Up The Cracks might or might not be a comic tale of romantic disillusion, but the true heartbreak is expressed in the coda, with his wah-wah pedal.

I suppose Cruising With Ruben And Jets shares a kinship with other parodies of doo-wop, but so much on it has an authentic and intuitive understanding of the r&b and street culture of Los Angeles that still resonates, but in evolved and mutated way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Franco Twinkie:

Uncle Meat and Ruben And The Jets were recorded at the same time. While Cruising with is straight narrative, Uncle Meat is a fever dream with many of the same tropes. They are inseperable in my mind.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40pm

Ok ok, cat can wait. I think best to listen to Ruben & the Jets as tribute or neo doo wop, not parody. Sorta like Stravinsky neo romantic moments. There are some music form games Zappa does but mostly they are his and Ray Collins take on classic doo wop strophes. My 2 cents.
