Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

My bass week continues! I saw three Joëlle Léandre gigs this week, she had a residency at my favorite venue. Though I guess she might not be really well known in the US (she does play there though)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm WR:

I imagine Joëlle Léandre is well know to anyone regular listener of Sewelson's show.
Avatar 2:12pm Dave Sewelson:

My workplace has ties with a contemporary music program in San Diego, so I met a few people who studied there
Avatar 2:43pm Dave Sewelson:

Kyle says cool...he wonders who fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm fred:

Ben Hackbarth and Arshia Cont mainly, a few others whose names I probably never knew (I never ask anyone's name)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm fred:

That was a long time ago, probably when Philippe Manoury was teaching there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm WR:

The string duo was burning. Looking forward to it being released.
Avatar 3:02pm coelacanth∅:

it's fusion; just not "fusion"
Avatar 3:05pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm fred:

@doctorjazz: you also might need to build an extension to your house
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm doctorjazz:

I did get to a great show DMG put on at another venue, BassDrumBone, not too long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm doctorjazz:

@Fred...space is definitely at a premium here. Kids moved out...if I can only take over their rooms...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 4:13pm coelacanth∅:

i must depart. Thanks Dave! Thanks Kyle!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm chresti:

Later coel.
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

Three, actually, from min wage, to decent w/ benefits, to real jobs. I must have offended the gods in a previous life.....(just changing out of my suit & tie right now...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm WR:

doctorjazz, when I go, I have a budget. Then the clerk has to wait while I repeatedly prioritize my pile, winnowing based on desire and bargain value, until ready to check out. Bring no plastic, just the cash allotted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm doctorjazz:

WR, plastic is indeed the killer in these situations...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm fred:

Right on about plastic. One of the many things I loved about the late Bimbo Tower record shop is that they didn't take it. Cash only. It made it easy to keep spending under control
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm fred:

@ngh: did the one for the real job go well?
Avatar 4:33pm Martinibomb:

just tuning in now but is this al an all upright bass specific show? I play upright so.. omfg! luv
Avatar 4:35pm Martinibomb:

this is live?! wow oh I am super loving this
Avatar 4:39pm Martinibomb:

just subscribed to Kyle's youtube channel holy crow great stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm fred:

re: recording bass, I read in the booklet of Dust To Digital's "How Low Can You Go?" that an early recording with a loud bass had the wider needle movement destroy records quickly
Avatar 4:42pm Martinibomb:

I have read that some where too..it's more to do with the vinyl mastering makes the grooves deep or wide or something and causes the needle to jump out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm doctorjazz:

That's the reason for the RIAA recording curve, from what I understand. Lower frequencies are attenuated when recorded onto the grooves (so as not to overload them). The reverse operation is done on playback, so the sound you hear had those lows back as they were played (and why you need a phono preamp, or a phono section in your receiver, to play back vinyl, but not other sources).
Avatar 4:48pm Martinibomb:

that makes so much sense to me now
Avatar 4:49pm Martinibomb:

german or french bow tho.. that is the question. I am betting german
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm doctorjazz:

always my favorite part of the show...sounding great, guys!
Avatar 4:54pm northguineahills:

@fred: I'm as optimistic as I used to be....
Avatar 4:55pm northguineahills:

Thanks Kyle and David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm doctorjazz:

Hope a good one comes through soon, NGH!
Avatar 4:55pm Martinibomb:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm chresti:

Thanks for the great show Kyle and Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm fred:

Thanks Dave and Kyle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm doctorjazz:

@Martinibomb...almost every Free World show features some spontaneous playing by Dave and his guest. Gina's show, up next, features live guests too, "Amrricana" as it's called these days.
Avatar 4:59pm Dave Sewelson:

Good by all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm WR:

Again thanks so much!
Avatar 5:00pm Dave Sewelson:
