Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Hey, hey, it's Dave and Free World music. Hello to you, and all.
Avatar 2:19pm northguineahills:

Classic Cecil!

Saw some good noise and DIY pop last night. Got invited to a party in a few weeks at some guys place where all of the entertainment will be only artists using modular analog synths. My cup of tea (wait, I'm drinking yerba mate).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm fred:

@ngh: sounds great! I'm gig deprived at the moment (no thanks to the local transit strike), but I'm going to a couple of shows this week, and if I have to walk there and back I will.

Hello free world!
Avatar 2:31pm coelacanth∅:

i sometimes forget that Cecil Taylor was really my introduction to "free jazz". i'd heard the name and that's all; found 3 albums (conquistador, stereodrive and Love for sale) cheap in an antique barn. i sometimes say David S Ware let me in but these albums came a few years earlier to me.
rest in peace. (both of them)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm fred:

@ngh: any news on the job front?
Avatar 2:36pm coelacanth∅:

hey chresti
Avatar 2:37pm holland oats:

hello freeworlders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm doctorjazz:

Hi Free Worlders! Nice to hear Cecil's sweeping, crashing tones (I believe this was my first "free jazz" purchase as well...i had newly discovered jazz, and was taken by a knowledgeable so-worker to J,&R Music, held my arms out, and he piled on albums he said I needed).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm chresti:

Hi coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm doctorjazz:

(I had heard some on The Smithsonian Collection off Classic Jazz, though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm fred:

@doctorjazz: piling on records "he" said you needed? Is that a nice origin story or shifting blame in case the missus reads this?
Avatar 2:44pm Dave Sewelson:

chresti holland and doctor.......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm chresti:

haha fred
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm doctorjazz:

@Fred, no blame intended, he gave be a great introduction to important albums/artists. I picked up the record buying on my own after that.

Hey! Why the diss about cold shower in that bio? I only take cold showers. Jolt me awake. Then again, so does free jazz, so maybe Dr Chadbourne has a point

@fred: Try taking a cold shower when the boiler in your building is out and the ambient temperature outside is 12 F/-11C and indoors is 38F/3C and the water was the same temperature. After a week of that, my health suffered. (My wife was more smart, and showered at her gym).

VolunEAR? hell, I pay for the privilege to hear this. Sadly, after expenses there isn't even gas money for the guests and the hosts pay their own electricity bills.
Avatar 3:21pm northguineahills:

@fred: we were glad we got a new landlord that gave half a shit about the building infrastructure (emphasis on half).

went well, they were more interested in the big picture rather then trivial minutia, and my freelance/subcontractor recent background. I should find out soon. I have more interviews coming next week. Thanks.

This one is the Philadelphia Ethical
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm WR:

@NGH got everything crossed for you. Hope you land a good one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm WR:

Thanks for to taste Mr. Levin. What's new?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm fred:

@ngh: Sounds unfair that when you land a job, we'll be celebrating while you have to go to work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm WR:

I've come in late, so maybe you already said something about it, but Mr. Levin, can you comment on anything about any of the Philly Soul sessions you participated in?
Avatar 3:44pm northguineahills:

@fred: I have some near minimum wage backup plans, but you'd think I'd have an easier way to pay my grad student loans and medical debt back. I'm starting to think this move to FL for a lower cost of living and to be closer to my aging parents may not have been my long-term interest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm fred:

@ngh: don't second guess, it's a waste of time. What matters is what's ahead. Still a good thing to have a backup plan. A solid, if meager base is better than none, as you said about a landlord who gave half a shit as apposed to none
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm fred:

I meant "opposed", not "apposed"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm fred:

@ngh: Point is, you're not desperate (they smell that, and the only places that want desperate people are places you should avoid). This is not a charity act on either side, so figure out or outright ask how you would be profitable for them. You would be, make that clear
Avatar 4:01pm northguineahills:

@fred: merci pour le conseil
Avatar 4:03pm northguineahills:

I stepped out and missed a King Britt Remix. I saw him live a few times in the 90s (and once in 2005). Very hit or miss, the hits are rather solid....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm fred:

@ngh: and many thanks for the heads-up about the Lea Bertucci/Amirtha Kidambi set! That was great, they mentioned a possible Europe tour, I hope they stop nearby

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm chresti:

I hate warm winters, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm fred:

I'm ambivalent with poetry in jazz. When the voice is an instrument, I'm all for it. When meaning dominates, it gets into the wrong kind of preaching and I tune out
Avatar 4:46pm northguineahills:

@fred: for me, it's hit or miss, but the later predominates my assessment (the former did in the last, but, then again, I have a hard time hearing speech/lyrics devoid of context of the original context unless I'm focusses on the words).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm fred:

Then again, I'm not sure what jazz is, apart from something that happens, but other things do too
  4:53pm David J:

Thanks Dave & Elliot!
