A two-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Going to need Bunker Busters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

the fun thing about walking through my house is listening to all of the different devices i have tuned into WFMU. Sometimes it's the same stream, sometimes not.
Avatar 7:20pm Martinibomb:

I like your style Granny!
Avatar 7:23pm Martinibomb:

I love this song! and Devo's version always kills me too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

My partner noticed that i really enjoy listening to music playing in the next room or downstairs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Rich in Washington:

Devo? Wha? ;)
Avatar 7:24pm Martinibomb:

LIke how did this awesome song get made?? Maybe Darryl can write a book about it
Avatar 7:24pm Martinibomb:

Yeh! DEVO does a cover of this
Avatar 7:25pm Mr Fab:

Oh yeah, both the original and DeVo's cover are in the Sheena stream.
Avatar 7:25pm Martinibomb:

It's been on my remix/cover list for awhile.. some day...

Avatar 7:27pm Martinibomb:

I haven't heard this Dump version thanks RICH

I need to go cook up some bacon to stick down my throat. I'll be back shortly.
Avatar 7:27pm Mr Fab:

Mark mothersbaugh says that "war of the gargantuas" was a very influential film to him, for some reason.
Avatar 7:28pm Martinibomb:

don't let the bacon get stuck in yer throat hah
Avatar 7:29pm Martinibomb:

Whaaa Miss Murgatroid does a cover! wow thanks I haven't seen her since the 90s. Tho my wife was using my Gadgetto CD to measure some yarn the other night LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'm going to have to archive :-( My eye is twitching like a mofo. Sleep! Hugs everyone :-)
Avatar 7:30pm Martinibomb:

Huggy sleepy time to DJ GG! Take care
  7:30pm Domenic:

My daughter just showed up perplexed at what was playing. She threaded over here like a cat curious and wary of a noise..... LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Rich in Washington:

image searches for this album just lead me back to my KBOO show.
Avatar 7:31pm Martinibomb:

^ of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Martinibomb: i was just gonna ask if you knew Miss Murgatroid, since she is such a Portland personality these days, though going by Alicia J Rose now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Rich in Washington:

HA! It also leads to your WFMU avatar, Martinibomb!
Avatar 7:34pm Martinibomb:

@Gran yup I did a lot of experimental music in the 90s played with her several times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Rich in Washington:

Sorry I'm not chatty here. Rather disheveled and grabbing records and CDs and such. Last minute things going on today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Martinibomb: there is no way we haven't met
Avatar 7:36pm Martinibomb:

@gran I am pretty sure we have :-)
Avatar 7:36pm Don-O:

Right now, I'm watching Teri Garr on Letterman on YouTube and hearing this. Tripppy (?) !
Avatar 7:38pm Martinibomb:

DAMN YOU RICH! The Bumpity theme
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Martinibomb: i have this paranoid fantasy that when we do cross paths, you're gonna be somebody i totally know!!!
Avatar 7:41pm Martinibomb:

^it's a good possibility I would say at this point in time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Martinibomb: you know ALL of my best friends in PDX (wait, do you know Bwana Spoons?)
Avatar 7:43pm Martinibomb:

^ of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

for crying out loud
  7:45pm Mod Mokka Matti:

Whew, made it back before the show ended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Martinibomb: do you know JennyB Shady Lady? She's one her way to my house right now.
Avatar 7:46pm Martinibomb:

@gran Bwana knows me tho probably not by name. Nice guy hung out with him many times. Sol mentioned JennyB to me that's how you're all connected but I'm not sure if I know her
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

the Bumpity gif is dancing in time to this!
  7:49pm Mod Mokka Matti:

My feets could certainly benefit from a mechanical masseuse right now.
Avatar 7:51pm coelacanth∅:

oh man i was over there> cooking and didn't hear devo.
i need devo. i'll have to listen to some devo after the show
Avatar 7:53pm Martinibomb:

There will never be a better *band* than DEVO in my humble opinion.
Avatar 7:54pm coelacanth∅:

that's a big statement! but i do think that, as well-known as they are, they're still not recognised for the true measure of their greatness
  7:56pm Domenic:

So this is what The Residents sound like. Went looking Bumpity stuff on the net.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Rich in Washington:

Not really a good example of what they sound like. More like mid-late era Residents.
Avatar 7:57pm Martinibomb:

@Dom Bumpity is the all time best kid's show. He's a bump in the road. total fave from my child hood. I really miss local programming like that.
Avatar 7:58pm coelacanth∅:

-and it was a pretty faithful reproduction of the original by Hank Williams!
Avatar 7:59pm Martinibomb:

@coelacanth∅: agree. Was fun for me a few years ago.. a good friend of mine works for them. And played bass on that last tour I think in 2014? After bob2 died
Avatar 7:59pm Martinibomb:

My friend got me backstage etc.. was really fun hanging with them
Avatar 8:01pm coelacanth∅:

oh man, *i'd* work for them!
...are they going to keep going, despite repeated and profound losses?
Avatar 8:01pm coelacanth∅:

(and Thanks Rich for playing more devo!)
Avatar 8:02pm Martinibomb:

^ I'm not holding my breath but I keep hearing they are going to do one last tour
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

The only DEVO concert i've attended was Burger Boogaloo 2018, which was RUMORED to be their"final performance." We'll see…
Avatar 8:04pm Martinibomb:

That looked like a fuuuuun concert wish I could have been there
Avatar 8:06pm coelacanth∅:

well i maybe shouldn't say it right now but i completely lost interest in devo when oh no it's devo came out.
...saw them 3 times though, between 1979 & 1981
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Martinibomb: it was a thrill indeed. Technically,i did see them play in SF Civic Center 10ish years ago, but it was an auto promo stunt, so i didn't count it. Even tho that was totally DEVO of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm ParUbi:

Hello guys
Avatar 8:11pm coelacanth∅:

hey ParUbi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Rich in Washington:

Hi coelacanth∅!
Hi ParUbi!
Sorry I'm not chatty! Slingin' lots of wax here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Hey, ParUbi!
Avatar 8:13pm huomenta:

Hi all! John Cooper Clarke produced by Martin Hannett, heavenly!
Avatar 8:15pm huomenta:

btw my only Devo gig was in London, April 2009 or so where they performed their debut + other tracks. No idea why I traveled all the way there to see them as I never was a fan, but then again I have no regrets over it!!
Avatar 8:15pm coelacanth∅:

it's okay Rich. i, for one, am due for a hot wax treatment
Avatar 8:17pm Mr Fab:

the artwork on that John Cooper Clarke isn't THE worst album cover I've seen, but can't think of anything worse now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm ParUbi:

I do have a Red Noise LP
Avatar 8:19pm coelacanth∅:

i'd expect devo's shows to all be good, throughout their history, regardless of what their studio output/ latest gimmick is.
...i'm also open to the possibility that their studio output got better again when i wasn't looking.
- it happened with the cure...
  8:20pm Mod Mokka Matti:

Still here
Avatar 8:22pm Mr Fab:

You can safely skip Devo after "Oh No," but got unexpectedly good in the late '90s with their "Wipeouters", and then their "Something For everyone"LP
Avatar 8:25pm coelacanth∅:

those i will check out then, Mr.Fab! Thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Rich in Washington:

Yep, Oh No was aptly titled.
Avatar 8:26pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

awwwww, i was just a lonely adolescent weirdo in Kelso Washington when "Oh No!" came out and it was good enough for me.
Avatar 8:32pm Mr Fab:

"Oh No" has a few good ones. There was def a drop-off in quality compared to the previous albums, but "Time Out For Fun" and the Residents-ish "Speed racer" were good 'uns, I'll give you that.
Avatar 8:33pm Martinibomb:

@Fab Disco Dancer worst DEVO song in my opinion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Rich in Washington:

Oh man! I was a lonely adolescent weirdo in Vancouver Washington when Oh No came out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Rich in Washington:

The Oh No tour was the last time I ever saw them live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Rich in Washington:

You might be right, MB.
Avatar 8:34pm Martinibomb:

total devo.. 1988 a weird time for devo I think. Even their photos/press stuff is terrible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Rich in Washington: we would have nervously avoided each other at the record store!
Avatar 8:35pm Mr Fab:

Yeah, "Disco Dancer," those late '80s albums...couldn't believe what had happened to them.
Avatar 8:36pm Martinibomb:

Avatar 8:36pm Mr Fab:

re their sorta comeback: There aren't any real classics on the order of say, "Mongoloid" or "Beautiful World on the "Wipeouters"and "Something For everyone" albums. But they are quite consistent, and I found myself returning to them.
Avatar 8:36pm coelacanth∅:

there were 3 of us who liked devo from the moment "satisfaction" made the scene, but the rest of the crew wouldn't listen even with our playing the first 2 albums (& the be stiff ep) every weekend -until either freedom of choice or new traditionalists came out; so there you go. it just has to run it's course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Rich in Washington:

GST: It's also the Groucho Marx syndrome. You know what I mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Rich in Washington:

I have to say, searching for more stuff that sounded like Devo is what lead me down the left hand path of really fucked up music as a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Rich in Washington: oh YEAH
Avatar 8:40pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i think devo pointed my way to the residents
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

and YEAH!
Avatar 8:41pm Martinibomb:

@Rich my friend who works for them says they are all a bunch of fucked up hillbillies behind the curtain
Avatar 8:42pm Martinibomb:

tho that description probably fits me as well Lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Rich in Washington:

Absolutely, coelacanth∅! Me as well.
Avatar 8:42pm coelacanth∅:

i'm finding no "wipeouters" in wikipedia (didn't try discogs yet)
when was that released?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Who? The Residents?
Avatar 8:43pm Martinibomb:

@gran Devo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Rich in Washington:

I think you're right, MB. Imagine if not for the impetus of witnessing the Kent State Massacre, where would the spudboys be? Maybe mid level managers at a tire factory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Rich in Washington:

The Residents are Louisiana dudes. You can hear it in their voices.
Avatar 8:46pm coelacanth∅:

are we hearing a guzheng?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i suspect there's an actual hillbilly current running through the Residents
Avatar 8:47pm coelacanth∅:

(it's sure beautiful in any case)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

yes, this particular track has lovely layers
Avatar 8:49pm Mr Fab:

Here ya go, coel: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:49pm Martinibomb:

all of the sudden youtube opened accidentally and GG Allin I wanna fuck myself started playing super loud on my other computer. Scared the crap out of me. freaky probably my cat
Avatar 8:49pm Martinibomb:

or maybe it's haunted?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

you'll need an excorcist, Martinibomb
Avatar 8:52pm coelacanth∅:

(i'd get gg allin out of my house asap!)
Avatar 8:53pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Mr.Fab -so, an offshoot band
Avatar 8:55pm Mr Fab:

There was also a Gerald Casale album released around that time called "Jihad Jerry," which I haven't heard. Anyone know it?
Avatar 8:56pm Martinibomb:

I think she hit something in a social media feed someone posted - my cat. Mystery solved
Avatar 8:57pm Martinibomb:

I have that Jihad Jerry album or I've at least heard it all
Avatar 8:58pm coelacanth∅:

'sounds like they encountered a rough road at the time
(no never heard it)
Avatar 8:58pm Martinibomb:

I think he made some nutty videos for it
Avatar 8:59pm Martinibomb:

there's only a couple original and then I think a few devo covers that was like 15years ago?
Avatar 8:59pm coelacanth∅:

...(but it always gets rough when one person is in control of several creative people)
Avatar 9:00pm Martinibomb:

time to gooogle...
Avatar 9:00pm Martinibomb:

Thanks Rich
Avatar 9:00pm coelacanth∅:
