I just got back from a walk with my wife in which it started raining midway through. Trust me, Love Unlimited waaaay over-romanticized that experience...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm The Oscar:

Afternoon! More songs should feature an interlude in which the singer decides to call Barry White on the phone.

@Rob Kppp ... I missed the beginning of the show, what comp exactly are you referring to? My internetting of "powder box" isn't returning anything relevant ...
Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Walt:

@Rob Kopp

Walt—He's referring to Rhino's girl group box-set that was packaged in powder boxes. It's called One Kiss Can Lead To Another.

I'm with ya EFD. I'll take a pass on Barry...
Avatar 3:34pm mariano:

When I was about 7 or 8, I thought "Mandy" was the greatest song ever written (around 1976/77). Didn't Manilow write a lot of classic commercial jingles?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Rob Kopp:

So Peanut is a bit like P.P. Arnold, who also record in the UK. BTW: P.P.'s new EP Sings the hits! contains a beautiful cover of Tin soldier. On the Small Faces original she's doing the backing vocals, but onto cover (Top Gear 2-1-1968) she's doing the lead vocals, while the backing vocals are done by Madeline Bell and Dusty Springfield!   3:53pm Dave Spice:

I always felt Barry Manilow knew exactly how cheesy he was and just played up to it.
  3:53pm Frank Zaatar:

Is this really the same Marti Caine who's better known in the UK as a 1980's TV comedian (comedienne?)?

From Wiki....

Bob Dylan stopped Manilow at a party, hugged him and said, "Don't stop what you're doing, man. We're all inspired by you.

  4:06pm Rick G:

As a bit of a joke we got the Kenny G board game, “Keepin’ it Saxy.” The game is kind of meh but maybe he has a sense of humor about himself?

And the book you're reading is... you're teasing us here.
  4:10pm P-90:

Hachiko was the famous Japanese Akita dog who went to the train station every day for nine years to wait for his dear master to return.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Gaylord Fields:

@Rick G: To quote someone also derided in his heyday as a tasteless purveyor of schlock, Liberace said he "laughed all the way to the bank."
Avatar 4:11pm djsheilab:

P-90—WOW! This makes her and the sleeve even more magical!
Avatar 4:12pm Monica:

Kenny G appears on Kanye's just-released album "Jesus Is King," which may or not help his cause around these parts:) But yes, he has a good sense of humor about himself.
Avatar 4:13pm djsheilab:

HA! That is brilliant, Gaylord Fields. Wish I could be that quick + witty in the presence of GREATNESS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm GeorgeSimian:

Liberace had a piano in every room in his mansion.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Handy Haversack:

This sounds so good.
Avatar 4:15pm JakeGould:

He should have made his mansion a big piano.
Avatar 4:15pm mariano:

@Monica: he's not dumb but he can't understand why she walked like a woman but talked like a man.
Avatar 4:17pm mariano:

@Handy Haversack: Is Dylan the most hated? Genuinely asking, not challenging. It was Don McLean for a while, or was that more of a personal beef between DM and Andy Breckman?
  4:17pm sugarwolf:

@Gaylord: not to out do you in pedantic deeds, but I believe Liberace originally said he cried all the way to the bank
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Gaylord Fields:

CATHY SAINT!!! Top 5 all-time '60s GG single, and one of the best one-single artists ever!
Avatar 4:18pm Little Danny:

Oh man love the massive sound on this Cathy Saint! Hey SB, hey all
Avatar 4:19pm Monica:

true dat, @mariano! my former neighbor, lyricist bruce sussman, wrote 206 songs with manilow. like gaylord said, quoting the rapier-witted liberace, he "laughed all the way to the bank."
Avatar 4:19pm ncjay:

@Gaylord Fields: I just looked in my iTunes and I have one other song by this one by Cathy Saint: the comp Boys Can Be Mean has her doing one called "Mr. Heartbreak"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm GeorgeSimian:

Can we just agree that Sheila is killing it? More hits than Manilow!
Avatar 4:19pm ncjay:

besides this one, that is
  4:20pm P-90:

@sugarwolf: yes, Liberace cried all the way to the bank. Kenny G laughed all the way to the bank, on an elevator.
Avatar 4:20pm ncjay:

oh and it's also on "Go Girls - With the Girls from Red Bird"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm bɿɒiniɒc:

I get the felling Don Felder takes a lot of flak 'round here
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Handy Haversack:

@mariano -- I have only anecdotal evidence, but it seems there's a real hand-rubbing anticipation for the playing of the Dylan death tape! Comments when Joe McG played that set of Dylan covers last week(? -- time is not something I am expert at these days).

For me, it would definitely be U2. Thank god for negativland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: I actually sourced the quote before I posted it, and the most credible version had him saying "laughed" — a paraphrase of "cried all the way to the bank," first citation in a 1946 Walter Winchell column.
  4:21pm lp-cover-lover:

Big Bad World is great! Thanks Sheila. Enjoying the show!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Rob Kopp:

@Walt: Cathy Saint is on the powder box as well
  4:24pm William Main:

The fact that Bob Dylan complimented Barry Manilow (even if true) only casts doubt on Dylan's own judgment.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Handy Haversack:

@P-90, it was Wilkie Collins.
Avatar 4:26pm Monica:

Liberace says it on Liberace at the Hollywood Bowl (1955). Think it's on the interstitial track "Sometimes I'm Ashamed to Take the Money."
  4:26pm sugarwolf:

@Gaylord: interesting! Well he definitely went to the bank a few times!
Avatar 4:27pm Little Danny:

Jazz pianist Jaki Byard claimed Liberace as an inspiration in one of his interviews...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm bɿɒiniɒc:

Trying to figure who recorded it first, I stumbled across a whole collection of "Man Smart, Woman Smarter"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Gaylord Fields:

I come with recepits.

Citation for "laughed": Bob Foster's column in San Mateo Times, Nov. 7, 1953: Liberace said, "My manager and I laughed all the way to the bank" (in response to a Chicago critic's attack of the pianist's live performance).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm efd:

I had this Sweet Inspirations record when I was a kid, probably around the time it came out. I was supposed to go see them with my family somewhere on the South Shore of Massachusetts (Canton, I think? Doesn't matter) but the show was canceled for some reason and I never saw them. We went and got ice cream instead.

Zats, I was hoping to see Gaylord's recipe for butter chicken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Seems as if Liberace later used the line several times, correcting "laughed" to "cried"— so we're both correct, but 1st citation has "laughed."

Farewell Allee, your songs will always be with us

One of my fave Dusty Springfield performances, and I don't think she ever did a studio version, was from her BBC TV series of the Bee Gees, To Love Somebody.

In 2002 I was London for a week and my bonus daughter Ivanka and I asked in every every record shop if they had I'll be there for you (theme of 'Friends') by The Rembrandts. None of them had. When we came back in The Netherlands Hans (another member of my record club) said: You should have asked before you went. I have 2 copies and 1 is for sale! Aargh. But Ivanka was happy.

Sheila, did you know that Brian Epstein asked Jenny Steur of Jenny & The Rascals (who had 2 fabulous Dutch singles) if she wanted to come to Liverpool to form a girl group as counterpart of The Beatles? She refused.

I think I would get takeout lunch from Taste of Persia when I worked around Gramercy Park in 2000-2001. Always a line out the door at lunchtime. Pretty sure that was the name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Rob Kopp:

The Lollipops? Wasn't this the same version as the version by Ellie Greenwich on the powder box?
Avatar 5:24pm djsheilab:

Rob Kopp—Same backing track but different vocalist. That's not Ellie Greenwich singing on the Lollipops version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Rob Kopp:

OK, that explains why it sounded so familiar to me. Have never heard that Lollipops version.

Avatar 5:36pm mariano:

@John from Florham park: It's hard to watch American TV news of any political stripe; it's so dumbed down, at the level of a junior-high newspaper. The difference is palpable when you see news from other countries, with real journalists putting tough questions to politicians and holding them to account.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Michael 98145:

We definitely need more independent journalism. And i don't mean blogs.
  5:38pm John from Florham park:

@Marino that’s why I don’t watch cable news anymore because of all trump all the time
Avatar 5:38pm djsheilab:

mariano—I share your disdain for American TV news. It is SHOCKING. My grandma watches CNN day n' night, and it's unbelievable how dumb it's become.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Phillippe Bastille:

Al Jazeera America shutting their doors was a big blow to any sort of world view, IMO
  5:38pm William Main:

Mariano: That's why I get most of my news from the BBC and the Economist.

On a sort of related note, I decided today that that Altin GÜn album was my favorite of 2019.
  5:41pm Dave Spice:

@mariano It's not just American news reporting, the entirety of objective news journalism worldwide is being strangled.

It's very hard to be an intelligent, open-minded person in this age. But perhaps it has always felt this way throughout history? I realize this all sounds a bit snobby, which I'm ok with :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Guido from Cologne:

I underestimated the Türkish community in Cologne.
The Altin Gün show was sold out early! :-)
Good for them, bad for me. I missed the show. :-(

"Parallelograms " is an fantastic album.

  5:47pm John from Florham park:

@Dj shelia you are spot on about that
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 5:47pm tneeld:

@Guido definitely don't underestimate the Turkish community in Germany in general! I saw them in Chicago and it was about 1/3 Turkish people gleefully singing along to every single word. I'm moving to either Berlin or Hamburg in May and I can't wait (for so many reasons).
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 5:48pm tneeld:

@djsheilab - Absolutely! And in the 'World' category, whatever the hell that means at this particular point in time.
Avatar 5:48pm mariano:

@everyone - journalism is indeed under assault everywhere. I see it when I go to the UK, Murdoch's been trying to kill grownup journalism there as much as in the US. That's why I get all my news from infowars (jk). I've gravitated towards print/online news over the years, with some radio (love BBC radio). Easier to get perspectives from all over, whether you agree with them or not, and cheaper than paying a cable bill.
  5:48pm John from Florham park:

@Parubi your friend is not the only one who who is
  5:48pm Dave Spice:

@William Main - the BBC's reliance on the UK government maintaining our license fee as the main source of the broadcaster's funding means you should always think twice about quite how objective the BBC viewpoint actually is.
  5:49pm Dave Spice:

...actually is.

Shelia B. I think you're right. There never was some golden age when everyone was rational and all information readily available and transparent. Are things worse now than they were in 1930 just before WWII? So lets not despair... yet.

Thank you, Sheila.
