Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Damage?..I gutcha damage. Friday was going to be good, with time to catch the outstanding programs here, but I left to help transport something in my little truck, and I backed into a pole. My tailgate, which was down at the time is SEVERELY munted, as the New Zealanders say, and uncloseable. The least valuable stuff I was hauling was damaged, the more important freshly-assembled thing was not. But the tailgate, good lord...it and my state of mind for the day, and maybe my Christmas....munted and moany. The tailgate outside is frightful, but the music is so delightful, I'm sure, and I'm ready.

Hi UM and all
  1:11pm Dean:

Picked up Paul Young's The Secret of Association on LP yesterday for a buck. Bought it for the hit written by Daryl Hall, but it also includes an early Sutherland Bros. tune, "I Was in Chains." The LP label attributes the song to I. Southerland [sic], but in fact it was written by Gavin.

Kottke performs "Arms of Mary" on his live album from Denver '95, too. Gorgeous.

Avatar 1:14pm still b/p:

Thank you, sympathizers.
Lesson: don't help nobody, never!
No, lesson is pay bleedin' attention. When an indecisive U-Haul was blocking the street, I reversed to back no more than a car-length around corner into street I'd just come off of. No traffic coming, but blind spot carelessness.
Harm beyond bungee-aid. Some prying and hammering might get the gate up to full vertical and then maybe it can be roped to stay up with injury. But it's destined for junkyard, I'm afraid, with near-perfect curved indent of telephone pole in top lip, and otherwise askew and buckled enough to force a decision to....put it down. Came back around the block shortly afterward to examine pole briefly; even without much velocity it was a good hit. Not bent or shattered at impact spot, but was that some opposite-side force damage to the wood I saw....?
A bendy little Santa was uncharacteristically riding on the cap's window/hatch handle in recent days, but he'd been removed today at loading time. He coulda been killed!

It's brand new, Hopey.
  2:18pm Dean:

I bet Kidz Bop'll cover this tune, but they'll fuck it up as "Please Don't Mess Up My World."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm The Oscar:

Also, if you're not already, you should probably start getting hyped for the Sparks-written movie musical coming out next year: www.indiewire.com...

Pat, you're even cooler than I realized.

Waterloo Lily sounds like a Carnaby Street hooker.

Saw Sparks once, in '76. The piano bench survived until the last moment when it met a brutal end at Ron's hands in the aisle of Boston Symphony Hall.

I started a new job a few weeks ago, at a fairly large company. Just made a cup of tea in the kitchen area, and there was a guy making coffee, wearing an FMU shirt. I hadn’t met this person (that I recall). After a pretty sizable pause—he had earbuds in —I said “I like your shirt.” He said, “Thanks; one of my favorite shows is on now” and we went in our separate directions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Uncle Michael:

He's a Bryce fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm coelacanth∅:

Dean -i once was at my sister's house and listening to "fuck you" by Cee Lo Green and my niece, then around 15? years old, came in and said with her knows everything self-righteous voice "why are they doing that to 'forget you'?"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

And be more courageous,Jeff! Hand him one of your show's business cards.

What do you mean you don't have business cards for your show?
Avatar 2:28pm Franco Twinkie:

Hey all, I was just out doing errands. Guess what? The horror has already started.
  2:28pm Dean:

I'm wearing a WFMU t-shirt at work right now, too. One of my colleagues asked about it. Suggested it would be a good conversation starter at the office holiday party.

I forgot about the C Lo Green tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

The horror?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm chresti:

I saw Sparks in 76 or 77, too! Maybe at the Santa Monica Civic auditorium
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

Van Duren is very very good. I cannot believe I didn't know about it until 2019.
  2:48pm Dean:

My business card reads, "Jeff Golick, host, destination: OUT, WFMU -- Please forward all promotional recordings to" my home address.

So... I can't be the only one to hear similarities between "Let's Mop It" and "Salt Peanuts". Is there a tale therein?
Avatar 3:00pm Franco Twinkie:

See you in Winter, Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Uncle Michael:

I heard it when I first heard it, Jeff. I don't know if there's a tale.

Per AllMusic, "The odd tune here is 'Let's Mop It,' a somewhat forced bit of hipness based on the famous lick from Dizzy Gillespie's 'Salt Peanuts.'" https://www.allmusic.com/album/1944-1949-mw0000221623

Simpson sampling "Strawberry Letter 23"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Thanks, UM! Have a joyous solstice :)
  3:11pm Dean:

Wait: If Smith performed "Let's Mop It" in '44, then maybe Gillespie took the lick from him. Wasn't "Salt Peanuts" '45?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm coelacanth∅:

-first i'm hearing about it...but i might not be able to listen on that day.
