I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Greetings of a lenticular nature.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

w00t! Lenticular cloud!
Gonna have to hit the road about a half hour from now, so I will listen to this show in full tomorrow before D:O rather than interrupt its wonderful flow! But wanted to wave hello anyway!
Avatar 12:04pm Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in, Ken!

Have fun & safe trip, james, thanks for checking in!!! Hope you enjoy this beautiful Saturday outside!
Avatar 12:07pm Sem:

Good afternoon, Mayuko, Play Vertigo denizens, the Vertigo-curious, and all.

@fred: picked up that Whitehead at the library today.
  12:09pm rw:

Good morning! Trying to think of something clever to say but don't seem to have it in me yet. Maybe some coffee would help... Quirky dancy elecrronicy music seems to be working too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm fred:

@Sem: I liked it. It's a short one, gone swiftly
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

Welcome, my radio family Sem! Good morning, rw! Not exactly BGM for morning coffee kind of music right now, but glad to be your company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm fred:

I really like this Judgitzu track
Avatar 12:18pm Mayuko:

@fred the other track in that release is pretty cool, too.
  12:18pm rw:

I don't know, I could think of a lot worse music to wake up to. And the company is superb.
Avatar 12:20pm Mayuko:

@rw probably I should always start my show with Wake me up before you go-go, for our wonderful west coast listenerds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm fred:

I went to a show of short (2 minutes max) electro-acoustic pieces by young composers at work. Pretty cool and wide-ranging, the base material went from pure synthesis to cello to tibetan bowl to duck calls
  12:22pm rw:

Ha! Maybe I should set that track on my phone as my morning alarm. Somehow it randomly set as Roy Orbison's In Dreams.
  12:23pm rw:

Tibetan bowls and duck calls...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm fred:

@rw: Having seen Blue Velvet, that would probably wake me up
Avatar 12:25pm Mayuko:

@rw Are you not supposed to be OUT of dreams when alarm goes off????? Def needs to be changed to Wham!!!
  12:26pm ParUbi:

Hello, everyone
  12:26pm rw:

Oh, man. It's been so long since I've seen Blue Velvet. Changing the ringtone has suddenly become priority #1 this weekend.
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

@fred that sounds like a very cool event! do you have a specific act/artist you remember/liked?
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

Hi ParUbi, welcome on board!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm chresti:

Electro-acoustic music is my favorite kind of electronic music
  12:29pm JosephB:

Hey everybody! I just woke up.
  12:31pm rw:

Joe!!

Time to take my kid to work. Thanks in advance Mayuko! Have a good weekend everyone!! And How did I get ants on me??
Avatar 12:33pm Mayuko:

Good morning JoeB! Have a great weekend with your kid and ants, rw!
Avatar 12:34pm Marc Francis:

Hullo! Loving the show so far!
  12:36pm Rickwaukee:

Depeche Mode just can't get enough of this song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm fred:

@Mayuko: Kayla Cashetta did one using cello sounds she sometimes made sound like a voice, it reminded me of Audrey Chen. Justina Repečkaitė used a Tibetan bowl placed on a snare drum, really nice sounds and processed beautifully. Oren Boneh did what he called a "duck call fanfare", that one was a lot of fun
Avatar 12:39pm Mayuko:

Welcome on board, Marc! Thank you for listening!

Avatar 12:46pm david w:

Hello, Mayuko and all! Grooving along...
  12:49pm Rickwaukee:

One of my favorite songs (and it fits the theme) is from The Kinks's Dave Davies - Imaginations Real
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm fred:

@Mayuko: They have short bios there: www.ircam.fr...
These pieces were early steps in what will end in full works in June (they will probably switch direction a bit by then)
  12:51pm Marie:

Hey Mayuko, I'm totally digging the show. I loved that Pale Blue. Thanks!
  12:53pm Marie:

Hey P-90, where you at? I grew up in Forest Park, just West of the city.

Today I’m in Deer Park, Illinois. Northwest suburbs of Chicago. Warm today, in the 40s. Single digit wind chill expected in a few days.
  12:58pm Marie:

Hi All :>)
  12:59pm Marie:

@P-90--oh. Yes, I heard they had an early cold spell. Ugh.
  1:00pm P-90:

Yes, we’re here. Learning to think of Trench Art when we feel like being Lazy-Asses.
  1:01pm Netochka Nezvanova:

Here in South India, we are going to play this next set loud and in the dark. Looking forward!!!

I am not sick. I am available.

Hey Mayuko and Listenerds! Very busy at work today so first chance I got to say hi!
Avatar 1:08pm Brian in UK:

@Netochka Nezanova We have heavy rains here too. The other week there was a listener from Colombo, Sri Lanka, cannot remember which programme.
Could eat a Dosa right now.

Avatar 1:14pm Mayuko:

Hi david w, Marie, melinda, Henry, & Netochka!!! Thanks so much for listening!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar 1:15pm Brian in UK:

Excellent. Is Bangalore a cool place?
Avatar 1:16pm Mayuko:

Listening loud and in the dark sounds like the best way of listening to this show!!!!!!!!!! Though in a lab and or with morning coffee aren't bad either!!!!!
Avatar 1:16pm Mayuko:

Hi Dropof in the lab, and Michael 98145! Thanks for listening!!!
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

Some of the Trench Art examples I found though this link is mostly from WW1

Good old Wobbly ! Hausu is an amazing movie by Obayashi!! Not sure what Hausu Mountain is, though...

Cool.....well, not many concerts by Wobbly or IRCAM protégés happen here....

Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@fred at 12:51 thanks! I'll check out that link.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm fred:

@Netochka Nezvanova: It's a smaller world than you think. A composer/noise musician from Bangalore is in Paris these days and he's a friend of someone who occasionally works here. I was asked to send him info about possible gigs here, but I can't remember his name now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Michael 98145:

Those sake cups are impressive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm ParUbi:

Kant beat a title like that!
Avatar 1:28pm Mayuko:

What does the title mean, ParUbi?
  1:28pm Netochka Nezvanova:

@fred I'd suspect they don't live here, but I'd love to be proven wrong. My plan was to organize a John Zorn Cobra (game piece) with south indian traditional temple drummers and a noise artist would fit right in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm ParUbi:

The thing in itself-- the unknowable thing as it exists independently of experience
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm ParUbi:

Kant writes: "And we indeed, rightly considering objects of sense as mere appearances, confess thereby that they are based upon a thing in itself, though we know not this thing as it is in itself, but only know its appearances, viz., the way in which our senses are affected by this unknown something."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm fred:

@Netochka Nezvanova: the guy's name is Hemant Sreekumar. I don't know him at all and never met him, I just sent him info about local shows, so I don't know if he's still based in Bangalore
  1:39pm Netochka Nezvanova:

Mayukooooooo always brings so many surprises to the playlist :)

@fred Thx! Will look into it.

@parUbi “I bear within me the seed, the rudiments, the possibility of life's capacities and endeavors. Where might I be, if I were not here? Who, what, how could I be, if I were not me, if this outward appearance that is me did not encase me, separating my consciousness from that of others who are not me? An organism—a blind, rash, pitiful eruption of the insistent assertion of the will. Far better, really, if that will were to drift free in a night without time or space, than to languish in a prison cell lit only by the flickering, uncertain flame of the intellect.” ― Thomas Mann, Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family
Avatar 1:44pm Mayuko:

@ParUbi This is difficult! I need to ask my former philosophy major friend to explain this. He spends literally half a year to finish one life drawing because things are forever changing and he cannot capture anything accurately so he can never truly finish it. I have no idea but sounds like a similar kind of struggle as Das Ding An Sich!
Avatar 1:46pm Sem:

Lovin' this 2nd hour, Mayuko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm ParUbi:

That reminds me of Kafka's story about the philosopher and the spinning top! biblioklept.org...
  1:47pm Matu:

@parUbi--what a powerful, amazing quote from Thomas Mann--thank you for sharing! Also, the Kant and previous post--wow--I love it. I have thought about these things my whole adult life. I actually just did some psillycjybin and found it very conducive to a different way of viewing my self and other humans in relation to reality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm ParUbi:

I'm a philosophy adjunct :\
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm fred:

Maybe it's the translation, but I never could understand anything from Kant. I understand what the words mean, but I have no clue why they are in that order
  1:49pm Matu:

I do disagree somewhat with Mann's view of the organism. I don't think it is pitiful. I think it is glorious and a gift (not that it isn't painful)
  1:51pm Matu:

@ParUbi--do you have a particular focus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm ParUbi:

@Matu-- Netochka Nezvanova provided the Mann quote. But, if you like it, there's a poem by Rilke I want you to read.
Avatar 1:51pm Mayuko:

Coming up next!!!! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm fred:

@ParUbi: What a noble (and probably poorly paying) occupation!
  1:52pm Matu:

Oh, my thanks to Netochka Nezvanova!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm ParUbi:

@Fred-- I have a coffee mug with a long Kant quote on it, and "I Kant Even!" stamped over it in red.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Michael 98145:

Thank you again, Mayuko
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm ParUbi:

I focused on German Idealism for my dissertation, hence the highly paying job.
  1:54pm Matu:

i've always loved Saul Bellow and was exposed to a lot of formal philosophy through him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm fred:

@ParUbi: I'm a Wittgenstein fan myself, so quite far away from Kant
  1:55pm Matu:

I paint and have recently vowed to do it even if it never gets seen publicly--it's not glamorous--it's work but it is deeply rewarding
Avatar 1:56pm Sem:

Thank you, once again, Mayuko. Later.
  1:56pm JosephB:

Looks like I'm missing out on an interesting discussion on the comments board! Thanks for another great show Mayuko! Btw I agree completely about your view of the true litmus test of an artist. Hear hear! See everyone next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm ParUbi:

@fred-- Wittgenstein wouldn't have any patience for this kind of language, I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko! I'll probably be late next week (Indian music show), I hope to get home in time for your mic break
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm chresti:

Thanks Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm ParUbi:

Anyway, I recommend reading Rilke's Duino Elegies, especially the 8th one. I've learned at least as much from art and literature as I have from other philosophers.
  1:58pm Netochka Nezvanova:

Thx Mayuko, great show!

Thanks for a great show, Mayuko!

Thanks Mayuko and PariUbu!
Avatar 2:04pm Mayuko:

@ParUbi The struggle is real!!
Avatar 2:05pm Mayuko:

@ParUbi & glad you are a happy philosophy adjunct, sounds rare, haha!
Avatar 2:08pm Mayuko:

@Matu I think that deeply rewarding feeling you feel is the true meaning of making art. It's just we also have to pay our bills somehow, which is a different kind of challenge as artists!
& Happy to have you checking in on the comment board!!!
Avatar 2:10pm Mayuko:

@Joe B Thanks & glad to have fellow artist's agreement!
Avatar 2:10pm Mayuko:

Thanks again everyone for all the interesting comments & listening! Looking forward to the next time!!!
