Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Gary:

How many other tracks can you think of that use a typewriter as percussion instrument?
Avatar 7:15pm sispus:

oh! my best! it is a political song named "official protest letter"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Gary:

Haha, OMG, thank you for that Sispus! You'll have to be our evening's guide
Avatar 7:15pm LambdaCalculus:

Gary, didn't Tom Ze compose a track using a typewriter as percussion?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Gary:

I don't know that one, LambdaC! Definitely want to hear now
Avatar 7:17pm sispus:

it was my childhood's background sound :) it is 2 am in here istanbul, and i won't sleep :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Gary:

Wow!

I was up at 2 am quite often while I was there, Sispus!
Avatar 7:18pm sispus:

:) yeah i know, it is istanbul!
Avatar 7:19pm LambdaCalculus:

I'm enjoying Cem Karaca's work a lot! Very psych rock feeling!
Avatar 7:19pm hyde:

the only typewriter song i can think of is the Leroy Anderson one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

@Sispus: Do you go to Babylon ever? I saw some Palestinian hip hop artists there when I was there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

I don't know that one, either, Hyde -- will have to track it down!
Avatar 7:23pm LambdaCalculus:

And also Wordy Rappinghood by Tom Tom Club starts with typewriter percussion.
Avatar 7:24pm sispus:

yes it is a well-known place. have you been in old taksim babylon or new bomonti babylon? the new one is actually an old beer factory. and this big building is given to the " ministry of religion" now. and this religion forbits drinking alcoholic beverages :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Gary:

Wait, whoa -- it does? Haha, I totally don't remember that, but it sounds right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Gary:

I was in the new Bomonti one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm ParUbi:

There's "Down all the Days" by the Pogues
Avatar 7:26pm hyde:

@Gary it's a cool song from the 50's. written by the same guy who wrote "Sleigh Ride" and "the Syncopated Clock" (which you likely don't know by name but would recognize because it's in a bunch of Warner Brothers cartoons)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Uncle Michael:

Why did Constantinople get the works?
Avatar 7:26pm LambdaCalculus:

Awww man, I just read that Cem Karaca passed away some years ago... what a shame. His music makes me think he must have had some kick-ass live shows. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm ParUbi:

(typewriter sounds, song about how Christie Brown can type with his toes)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The 1st thing I was kind of put in mind of was Flower Traveling Band from Japan - but they're probly just some easy touchstone in my mind...
On the whole is the uniqueness of this that I find beguiling - a kind of Hard Rawk that didn't codify into Metal like most over here ...& the distinct approach to Rhythm & Melody from this region. What a treat !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm coelacanth@ tomato talk∅:

greetings Gary & Bodegasattvas
Avatar 7:31pm LambdaCalculus:

Heya coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm coelacanth∅:

hey LC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Gary:

ParUbi! Uncle Michael! Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Gary:

Ah, the Pogues have a typewriter track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm coelacanth∅:

re:typewriter didn't they spoof that Leroy Anderson piece on an episode of i Love lucy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm coelacanth∅:

(...and there's a song with a typewriter typing in the background, but not in time with the song necessarily. can't recall...a female solo artist i think, this century. maybe "Madeline"?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Gary:

WHY DIDN'T THE BEATLES THINK TO USE A TYPEWRITER IN PAPERBACK WRITER???
Avatar 7:39pm hyde:

@coel not sure about the I Love Lucy thing. i know it shows up in a Jerry Lewis movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm coelacanth∅:

- or just the bell, in-between verses
Avatar 7:40pm sispus:

hey! you found emel sayın's "türkü" (folk) song? it is actually rare, it is not her "normal" sound. she sings "sanat müziği", means art music (of palace).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm coelacanth∅:

hyde that could be what's rattling 'round back there, in my head. whatever it was i saw it >45 years ago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

Haha, I got that CD at Mustapha on İstiklal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm chresti:

Flash Strap has a Typewriter Underwater Bongo for bed music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh man. Adore this style...
Avatar 7:43pm sispus:

and it is now emel sayın's "art music" :) it is my fault, your list was wrong i think and i cannot recognize taht it was not emel sayın
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Gary:

Wait, what? I actually never noticed that, and I'm a semi-frequent listener, Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

Oh, shoot -- yeah, I seem to be off here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm WR:

this whole type writer in music this is sending me on a tangent. I thought I recalled a French composer had used it, possibly Satie, but can't verify. I did find this: type-writer.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

I guess I got a song ahead somehow. This is now Handan Kara
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm coelacanth∅:

WR that sounds familiar to me too
Avatar 7:46pm sispus:

there was a "türkü" before emel sayın, and it is not there now.
Avatar 7:49pm northguineahills:

Digging the Istanbul loot you just got!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

Okay if you refresh the page it should be correct now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

Hey there, NGH!
Avatar 7:51pm sispus:

infos: "yeşilçam" is the street where the film "artists" wait for work and for cinemas. these songs are of films. wait, actually films are of the songs :) they did many films after popular songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm coelacanth∅:

i know someone from turkey who's surname is pronounced "turker" -don't know how it's spelled. (but i think it's spelled "turker"!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm WR:

Yes, Parade by Satie. en.wikipedia.org... Though it is said that Cocteau added the type writer and other effects...
OK can now concentrate on the great music of this show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Gary:

Ah, sweet info, Sispus -- I knew this collection was film-related, but not sure exactly how
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm WR:

@sispus, thank you very much for adding info and detail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

What WR said!
Avatar 7:57pm hyde:

@WR huh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm ParUbi:

More typewriters: Brutum Fulmen / Flesh of the Moon
Avatar 8:01pm hyde:

there are apparently way more typewriter songs than i thought
Avatar 8:02pm sispus:

very good pronounciation gary :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Gary:

You're too kind; thank you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Gary:

Damn; the typewriter hits keep coming -- thanks, ParUbi!
Avatar 8:07pm sispus:

and it is also a typewriter song. arzuhal means formal petition letter. once there were katips in front of the courthouses writing formal letters. she wants a petition letter for her lover :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Gary:

Oh, wow -- thank you, Sispus -- this music is making me freaking cry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm coelacanth∅:

i think that Leroy Anderson typewriter piece affected me a great deal when i was little. i got my first tape recorder when i was 7-8 and always was looking for household or outside the house items that could serve as percussion instruments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm redkayak:

Good evening all - what wonderful music tonight!
Avatar 8:10pm LambdaCalculus:

Gary, you picked up some real treasure! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Gary:

RedKayak!
  8:12pm peter:

welcome back Gary! very excited for this show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm coelacanth∅:

i think there's a jethro tull song that uses a typewriter sound; and "lather" by jefferson airplane?
(...it's hard to think of them while listening to the show!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm redkayak:

@Gary - Ahoy, captain! Just paddling through :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Okay, now I am am super crying. Peter! Howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm coelacanth∅:

yes, beautiful.
and i'll echo the appreciation for technical information from sispus; and thanks WR for those links!
  8:21pm peter:

man, who is better than Selda?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Gary:

Nobody on Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, that's for sure
Avatar 8:23pm sispus:

thank you all! you take my sleep, and my little night sadness too :)
Avatar 8:24pm LambdaCalculus:

God, that Rolling Stone list was such a joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gary:

Good night and THANK YOU SO MUCH, Sispus!
Avatar 8:25pm LambdaCalculus:

There were maybe a tiny handful of singers on that list that I will agree are awesome and deserve to be there, but Rolling Stone doesn't look past the US and the UK so a ton of wonderful singers got overlooked as usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Gary:

Great, now I'm fucking crying again
Avatar 8:27pm sispus:

instead of going to bed with a little gloom, now i'm drinking a cup of mastica ouzo. i made the ouzo myself, by the way :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm ParUbi:

It's a good, beautiful melancholy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm WR:

thank you again sispus. a toast to you, sleep well.
Avatar 8:35pm sispus:

you are amazing gary! how did you find that track! what a gazel it is! what a sound!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm chresti:

haha hyde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gary:

It's a Kalan Records release, Sispus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm WR:

Yes, Gary does seem to have a skill, a talent for finding jewels.
Avatar 8:38pm sispus:

if you like that music, you must listen also hafız burhan. he is not from this world, i think. especially in his "yüzüm şen, hatıram şen"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Uncle Michael:

Chinotto float are the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm coelacanth∅:

sispus i'm impressed! i've had some good times with ouzo!
no place to buy it now where i live.
Avatar 8:42pm sispus:

turkey owe too much to kalan music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Gary:

I am going to save all my money and go back and buy all the Kalan CDs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Gary:

I had to Google "Chinooto float"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm coelacanth∅:

...and how do you compare ouzo to raki? a few years ago there were many turkish exchange students in my town i became friendly with and 2 of them insisted raki is better...but then they were quite nationalistic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just wow all this.
Avatar 8:45pm cactus of north america:

great show, gary! my wife is turkish so she and i have been digging it immensely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gary:

Cactus of NA, welcome to you and yours!
Avatar 8:49pm LambdaCalculus:

All this talk about raki makes me wish I had some.
Avatar 8:49pm sispus:

rakı has a special oil extraccted from anise (anason). the anise is added at the last distillation of the grape alcohol. for ouzo and other beverages, the extraxcts or oils added to the distilled alcohol, mean, they don't involve the distillation process. and anise has a very special flavour that you cannot use other aromas with it. anise is very very sharp.
Avatar 8:50pm LambdaCalculus:

sispus, I drink anise... Spanish heritage so it's a natural for us. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gary:

I had no raki while I was there -- a mistake. But I did have a lotta Bomonti beer
Avatar 8:50pm LambdaCalculus:

Anis del Mono is my poison. :)
Avatar 8:51pm sispus:

sorry for typos, i think ouzo became a bit hard :)
Avatar 8:51pm LambdaCalculus:

Man, this music makes me wish that the Turkish restaurant that used to be on 1st Avenue near where Kim's used to be was still there... I miss that place. :(
Avatar 8:52pm sispus:

lambda, no way! garry, good choice :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Gary:

LamdaC, you gotta come to the newish Turkish restaurant in Astoria
Avatar 8:53pm sispus:

gary, this last set is a rakı - meyhane set, really. i think you must try rakı.
Avatar 8:53pm LambdaCalculus:

I've gotta go back to Astoria is what I've gotta do! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm coelacanth∅:

there was (is still, i think) a store in kenilworth nj that had maybe 40 different ouzos. i tried maybe 15-18. some of the more expensive ones were not sweet and the anise was very subtle.
-maybe that's more how raki is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Gary:

The Lokanta
Avatar 8:54pm LambdaCalculus:

I want to head back to Queens again soon because I also found an international food shop in Sunnyside that tickled my fancy and I want to pick some stuff up there!
Avatar 8:55pm LambdaCalculus:

coelacanth, do you remember the name of the store?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

Let me know when you're headed out here, and we'll hang out
Avatar 8:55pm LambdaCalculus:

Definitely!
Avatar 8:55pm sispus:

lokanta! the lokanta has no alcoholic beverages. but meyhane is. meyhane means "house for alcoholic beverage"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm coelacanth∅:

there's a very good turkish restaurant in my town. i don't know if they have a liquor license.
the greek restaurant has been under renovation for over 4 years with no sign of progress in at least 3! just a big, ugly empty shell where there used to be a neat little restaurant.
Avatar 8:58pm sispus:

hey! is that busker the blind one in istiklal? i cannot differentiate them, but the song is aşık veysel song, he was a blind "aşık". like troubatorus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Gary:

OMG, YES! That's him!
Avatar 8:59pm sispus:

the name of the song is: güzelliğin on par'etmez
Avatar 8:59pm LambdaCalculus:

There's a pretty good Greek takeaway place down the road from me. No liquor license, natch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm coelacanth∅:

LambdaC "the greek store" on kennilworth boulivard.
also amazing homemade spanikopita...at least 18 years ago it was! you have to buy a big tray of it though and it ain't cheap
Avatar 9:00pm sispus:

gary you are my friend :) thank you!
Avatar 9:00pm LambdaCalculus:

coelacanth, I'm willing to buy a tray and devour them. :)
Avatar 9:03pm sispus:

the busker always plays this song. güzelliğin on par'etmez means your beauty is worthless (if i didn't have this love)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

LC -my gf at the time was 1/2 greek and her mother made the best! this store had the 2nd best!
the turkish place where i live now had it (except of course they called it "spinach pie") and that was the 3rd best (which makes it excellent); but their mother died a few months ago. she made it and they (the twins who own the restaurant) said they've never found anything comparable so they just took it off the menu.
sad.
Avatar 9:06pm hyde:

@coel oh, that's brutal!
Avatar 9:07pm LambdaCalculus:

coelacanth, I looked up the place and marked it on my map. It's not too far from Digital Press in Springfield, so next time I go by DP I can swing around and hit the store afterwards! :)
Avatar 9:08pm cactus of north america:

like a turkish syd barrett track. great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm coelacanth∅:

for sure hyde. these guys are sweethearts too.

infos: the lyrics of "makinalaşmak" is actually a poem of nazım hikmet. it is a poem under influence of mayakovski, a russian futurist poet.

Avatar 9:11pm sispus:

and! barış manço with a neşet ertaş song! a beautiful combination!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm coelacanth∅:

LambdaC it's very close to springfield. if you're in the mood that day too...if you like indian food my very favorite indian restaurant is a few blocks down! (i hope!) "star of india". you could have lunch there and have spanikopita for dinner!
...(maybe with ouzo)
Avatar 9:13pm LambdaCalculus:

I like it when a plan comes together like that! :D
Avatar 9:13pm sispus:

it is a perfect choice for barış manço i think. this version of the song is not so well-known in turkey. you are an expert gary.
Avatar 9:18pm sispus:

and i will go to the busker and say him that his song is aired at an american radio. he will be very proud :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Gary:

I am an enthusiast, period
  9:23pm Hatice:

Great! Teşekkürler Gary!
Avatar 9:23pm sispus:

name of this song is "haydar haydar". haydar is the name of an alevite legendary guy. the song is a "deyiş", a rekigious dance-song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Gary:

Hatice!
Avatar 9:25pm sispus:

maybe not a deyiş but a semah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm WR:

Nazim Hikmet is a great poet.
Avatar 9:32pm sispus:

yes wr, the best in turkey.
Avatar 9:37pm sispus:

Avatar 9:41pm sispus:

it is very hard to translate but a heartly word in turkish. sometime you must give compassion to the garip, he or she needs it, but cannot reach because it is "strange or poor" :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Gary:

Like "disenfranchised" kind of
Avatar 9:43pm sispus:

not it of course but he or she
Avatar 9:44pm sispus:

yes! i won't think disenfranchised is the word but it suits well, i think.
Avatar 9:48pm sispus:

oh müslüm "baba"! the father müslüm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

interesting. the songs in this set sound southeast of turkey to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Gary:

Arabesque
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm WR:

coelacanth, @8:54 ET. 15-18 different ouzos?!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm coelacanth∅:

haha yeah WR it was my main drink for a few years
Avatar 9:56pm sispus:

müslüm gürses has a beautiful "covers" album named "aşk tesadüfleri sever". it has the covers of the songs like "mr tambourine man" or "temple of the king". the supervizor of the album is a gay turkish poet "muarthan mungan", and the turkish lyrics of the songs are poems of good turkish poets. the last note: müslüm gürses' regular followers are usually homophobic and sexist young turks, and they welcomed the album :)

...(probably 15 at most)

and...i just thought of another typewriter song!
