Futile expeditions to the edges of good taste, bad morals, and ugly intententions. Late night drives somewhere between Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle and The White Castle of Fear.
Second Hand Pop, MIDI grunge soundalikes, and uncanny Japanese karaoke.

greetings Darren and others

Zooropa:

I never listened to Johnston much. I always got the impression that people were taking advantage of him. So it made me uncomfortable listening to him.
Avatar 3:15am
Hubig Pie:

God bless WFMU
Avatar 3:16am
VincentNifigance:

There used to be a hidden link where it said ‘BOTTOM’ of the front page of RejectedUnknown.com that took you to a treasury of all these unreleased mp3s.
Avatar 3:17am
Zooropa:

His entire catalogue was up on emusic when emusic was all you could eat for 9.99 a month, so I had everything he did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24am
Darren:

I know how you feel Zooropa, he was a fragile guy. And with all the unscrupulous characters in the music biz, I understand how your sleeze radar went off. But I think there's a ton of talent and alot of self awareness beneath the myth of Daniel Johnston
Avatar 3:25am
Zooropa:

I agree. He had a talent. But it was clear to me that people were taking advantage of a guy who had problems. Even the way he died kind of proved that to me.
Avatar 3:26am
Zooropa:

Who signs away his rights to emusic where he’s never going to make a dime?
Avatar 3:27am
Zooropa:

It’s the attorney in me that sees this. The music fan wanted to enjoy his music but the attorney saw the guy was abused
Avatar 3:29am
Zooropa:

I was at a reception for him in Atlanta where he was given some recognition by an indie station over there, but no one wanted to socialize with the guy. People were honoring him to make saints of themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31am
Darren:

I'm not aware of the ownership of his digital content, but I do know he was protected by his family to a point. But yeah, lots of sadness in his story no doubt. But his music meant a lot to me, and from what I know he was loved and cared for. Although 58 is way too young to die, so you have to wonder if he could have been better looked after.
Avatar 3:31am
Zooropa:

He was in the hospital the day he died.
Avatar 3:32am
Zooropa:

He was alone at home a few hours later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32am
Darren:

I agree with that about people using him for social status or whatever. Gross
Avatar 3:33am
Zooropa:

I am sure WFMU did not do that.
Avatar 3:33am
VincentNifigance:

When you hear how incandescently earnest he was in comparison to 99% of his peers, hardly anything else will suffice. No one was buying into his undeniable talent for a long while so bad business decisions we’re made because he wasn’t compus mentus and his elderly family didn’t understand the business.
Avatar 3:34am
VincentNifigance:

I honk Daniel lives in a house specifically built for him behind his parents’ house. He may have been alone when he died but he wasn’t neglected, just independent.
Avatar 3:34am
VincentNifigance:

“Think” not “honk”, obviously... though maybe...
Avatar 3:35am
VincentNifigance:

You got it, Darren.
Avatar 3:40am
Zooropa:

I appreciate this tribute and now that he's gone I am revisiting his music. I just have a soft spot for people being taken advantage of. I speak out and it makes me no friends. He needed an attorney Guardian Ad Litem.
Avatar 3:46am
VincentNifigance:

“You can listen,
To these songs,
Have a good time and walk away.
But for me,
It’s not that easy,
I have to live these songs forever.”
Avatar 3:47am
Zooropa:

exactly Vincent, I am just the kind of guy who can't walk away. I wish bandcamp existed when he was around.
Avatar 3:51am
VincentNifigance:

@Zooropa Yes, he definitely needed a knowledgable advocate. The culture he grew up in was not conducive.
Avatar 3:52am
Zooropa:

I've been giving some thought to writing a law review article about his situation. What stops me is then I feel like I am profiting off his grief. Vincent how did you get the tomato?
Avatar 3:55am
VincentNifigance:

@Zooroopa it’s a jack o’lantern. I made a one-off pledge.
Avatar 3:56am
VincentNifigance:

I don’t think I’ve listened to this album for 15 years. This album should carry a health warning. Man, that chugging in the background.
  3:56am
Michael C:

Amazing show. I missed who the guest is from Perth. He's great!!
Avatar 3:57am
Zooropa:

Johnston has a lot of parallels with Brian Wilson. And I could picture a world where Johnston was lauded like Wilson and wrote a song like good vibrations and Wilson was a asocial outsider who wrote fringe music.
Avatar 3:58am
VincentNifigance:

This and 1990. Ain’t no joke. When I was a kid, we used to try and communicate with spirits using a deck of cards. My Dad would get insanely angry even though he didn’t believe in any of that crap. When I got older I understood, you can twist your head into terrible places. Don’t Play Cards With Satan.
Avatar 3:59am
Zooropa:

He has raw melodic skills. Shame that wasn’t developed. An Attorney GAD would have invested in his getting specialized music training
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
Darren:

Young Daniel getting specialized music training might be worse than most things on earth. I say hang the lawyers and let him drink mountain dew and make songs about it on his piano!
Avatar 4:23am
Zooropa:

Not all lawyers should be hung. GAD lawyers don’t make a dime off their clients.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24am
Darren:

If they give young daniel any music training outside of maybe helping him tune his guitar then I'm sorry they are going to the gallows
Avatar 4:24am
Zooropa:

*GAL
Avatar 4:25am
Pablexa™:

Good morning
Avatar 4:26am
Zooropa:

What a GAL does is make sure the person whose legal interests they represent knows what options are available to him or her and allow them to make an informed choice. In modern society, anything less is a form of abuse or taking advantage of someone with difficulties.
Avatar 4:28am
VincentNifigance:

Brian Beattie did a great job with Rejected Unknown. Took me a few years to appreciate it. Producing Daniel wasn’t easy. Mark Linkous failed, I think. The guy who did Space Ducks did a great job. His background was in Samba or something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am
Darren:

The key to producing Daniel was letting him work at his own pace, and keeping things organic and simple. Linkous ruined all those songs with the canned midi post Soft Bulletin bullshit
Avatar 4:32am
Zooropa:

If your daughter purchased a winning lottery ticket and when to the state capital to collect, and she was a minor, the state would appoint a GAL to represent her interests and a trust to administer the winnings until she became an adult. Johnston had the equivalent of a lottery ticket with his talent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32am
Darren:

sorry for these mic problems, I'm bad!!
Avatar 4:33am
VincentNifigance:

Absolutely. Sounds like Paul Leary tried that with ‘Fun’ though, and it sounds like very little got done. Probably a delicate balancing act producing Daniel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39am
Darren:

Daniel definitely struggled under the pressures of a major label with Atlantic, who demanded an album with a deadline, and expected him to tour. Also, Paul just played everything, which sucked the life out of those songs.
Avatar 4:40am
Zooropa:

That’s why he needed a GAL.
Avatar 4:41am
Zooropa:

And yes attorneys should be burned and shot until you need one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am
Darren:

check my story @dadswatchingtv on IG for that photo of daniel at the statue of liberty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am
Darren:

True, but before he signed with atlantic he had an artist friendly deal with Elektra that afforded him a lot of leeway because of his mental illness. But at the last minute he backed out of the deal because he thought Metallica, who were on Elektra, were actors of satan trying to kill him. So yeah.
  4:46am
Ajay:

Can you ask your guest to speak into the mic / or turn his mic on. Can’t hear him for beans
  4:46am
seedfriend:

Glad to catch your show this morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
Darren:

Sorry Ajay, technical difficulties...
Avatar 4:49am
VincentNifigance:

@Darren Yves Beauvais of Atlantic even got Metallica to contact him and assure they weren’t in the employ of Satan!
Avatar 4:50am
Zooropa:

Sorry Darren, I see his life and problems through the lens of my legal profession, you see his life through the lens of a fan. Neither approach is 100 percent correct. A good attorney sometimes can’t be a fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55am
Darren:

No Sorrys! I'm also thinking of his mental health, but we are both thinking of what would have been best and I know there are a few good lawyers and I bet you're one of them!
Avatar 4:59am
VincentNifigance:

And Sassenfrass the cat.
Avatar 4:59am
Zooropa:

That’s why I am not a rich attorney. But I could be.
Avatar 5:02am
Zooropa:

The weird thing is now that he’s dead I feel like I can be a fan. He came to my attention when I was admitted to the bar, so I was fascinated by him in a legal sense, which is what made me feel like enjoying his music was painful. I heard a potential Brian Wilson.
Avatar 5:06am
VincentNifigance:

Yes, this is Daniel produced right. So good.
Avatar 5:08am
Zooropa:

He didn’t like girls.
Avatar 5:09am
Zooropa:

He was probably right
Avatar 5:10am
VincentNifigance:

Yes @Darren, this is how Linkous should have done it.

That was a great lyrical couplet
