Brian, I took the Bernina Express across the Alps, and it was absolutely mind-blowing. The train has these enormous high glass windows so you can see everything. Decorating the hall? Arrghhh! (yes it was a number one billboard hot 100 it for 2 weeks in 1977)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Rich in Washington:

@Bill W: There was this period in Summer/Fall of '77 where you couldn't turn on the television without some kind of Star Wars segment/clips/comedy sketch - leading up to the dreaded Holiday Special.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am pantz:

I thought Vangelis did the score for Blade Runner. Is this a cover @Joe?
  10:26am Bill W:

the Pryor one had the advantage that Lucas let him use the actual costumes/makeup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am The Oscar:

One of my favorite college-era memories is firing up a bootleg copy of the Star Wars Holiday Special for an excited crowd of maybe 15 people, and ending it with two. Those untranslated Wookiee conversations are ROUGH.
  10:26am JakeGould:

I miss the “Star Wars” craze from 1977 to 1980. The media landscape was different so there were all kinds of nonsense and ephemera floating around everywhere. A much simpler time in terms of overmarketing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am annie:

it's obvious musical numbers are instrumental in today's line-up..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Rich in Washington:

I remember for years you couldn't buy the actual Blade Runner soundtrack. There was this really lame symphonic release (which I have and sort of love) but the actual Vangelis thing wasn't officially released until '94.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Rich in Washington:

There were some wonderful bootlegs of it, though.
Avatar 10:28am SSS:

Just to clarify...no preachy stuff from me, just like to be loud for the right cause
  10:28am yippie:

i really want to get a mutiny on the bounty soundtrack by vangelis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Rich in Washington:

@JakeGould: Movies are so pre-hyped now. We see jillions of posts on their casting, special effects, spoilers, etc., long before the film's even released.
Star Wars sort of seemed to come out of nowhere by comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Rich in Washington:

Ironically, Star Wars was originally going to get an electronic score, but the decision to go with bombastic symphonic music - sort of out-of-fashion in 70s cinema was a later inspiration - for better or for worse.
  10:32am Brendan:

Speaking of bones and yet on an unrelated topic, I found a baby turtle on my front walk yesterday. I took it down in the woods in Rock Creek Park and walked a bit to find a transitional area (upland / lowland ) not far from water. After settling on a spot , I released it. No sooner than I turned around and took two steps did I see an empty, beached upper shell (carapace) of a box turtle. It was a circle of life moment.
  10:32am Brendan:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Rich in Washington:

BTW: YouTube channel Auralnauts is killing it with insane remixes of the entire Star Wars run of movies. Sort of like a cut-up 'What's Up Tiger Lilly' approach. They're freaking hilarious.
Avatar 10:34am Joe McG:

@David: That would've been good, but I ran out of time! Maybe next week since I do love it so much.
Avatar 10:35am Joe McG:

BTW, does anyone know what it means to "rock your body out"? Out of what/where? Out of energy?
  10:36am JakeGould:

@RichinWashington: I always understood that George Lucas wanted to recreate the scores of films like “Ivanhoe” and “Robin Hood.” — “The rough edit of Star Wars had a temporary track which used pieces of Gustav Holst's The Planets suite, snatches of Alex North's score for Cleopatra (Joseph L Mankiewicz, 1963) and selections from Bernard Hermann's music for Alfred Hitchcock. Whilst these stock tracks helped create the right mood, there was never - as had been suggested since - the possibility of actually releasing the film with such a track. Lucas wanted a rich, orchestral score, something old-fashioned and outdated at the time. He knew it should be reminiscent of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the multi-award-winning film composer who had scored The Adventures of Robin Hood (Michael Curtz, 1938) and The Sea Hawk (Michael Curtiz, 1940), two of his moders for Star Wars.”

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am pantz:

Great interview, Joe! What a cool guy! Magazine Woman is killer. Heady psych jams.

@coelcanth: Ha ha ha!
Avatar 11:29am Roberto:

It was also one of the few rock albums in my father's collection. Once I asked him why he had bought it when I knew it wasn't his cuppa tea. He responded that he figured he should see what all the fuss was about, and after listening, quickly concluded that it was about nothing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am David (in London):

This is such a great interview. The story of Badfinger is so harrowing that it's nice to hear Joey laughing and flashing his typical Scouse wit.
  11:40am JakeGould:

@Roberto: My first introduction to the Beatles was my sister’s copy of “Sgt. Pepper.” Since it was the only cool thing in our record collection I showed it to some friends. An older friend then looked at it and deemed it a “fake” because it had an Apple Records logo on the label. And thus my first introduction to the Beatles was also my first introduction to pedantic Beatle’s fan record collectors.
  11:40am Joe R.:

I’m going to this show on Wednesday. Not sure what to expect but this interview is good prep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am coelacanth∅:

David, good point
Avatar 11:41am Joe McG:

@David: I purposely tried to steer clear of the dark stuff. He's long past it. @JoeR: Report back!
Avatar 11:42am Snoochienucci:

this interview is awesome, im embarrassed to say that im not very familiar with Badfinger, ill have to do a dig!
  11:42am Joe R.:

@JoeG - will do!
Avatar 11:42am Linda Lee:

i've loved Badfinger from my first hearing ~ 69? 70? finally able to catch their songs on a portable cassette recorder pointed at the radio & had to carry that around, 1970 or so. i'd just stand on the subway platform in nyc, 10 years old & play it for all to hear. :-)
Avatar 11:43am Linda Lee:

long time love. :-)
  11:45am JakeGould:

@Roberto: But all cool! The Beatles made everyone listen to music differently.
