hello again!

Hiya Coel!

I like Birth of the Cool so much better than Kind of.... well, doesn’t matter. Love Birth of the Cool.

MARION BROWN IS AWESOME

Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, Mark and non-squares.

mauri:

good saturday markr and everyone.
  3:09am
markr:

I love 'em both. And really almost anything Miles ever did.
  3:10am
markr:

Welcome, Ken and Mauri--yes, we shall endeavor to avoid any sharp corners--squares, trapezoids, etc.
Avatar 3:11am
Scraps:

Love Sirone, too. Forgot he was on this.
  3:13am
markr:

Also the mighty Rashied Ali on drums, and Detroit's own Stanley Cowell on piano. They all truly shine. Marion was very generous with his groups, everybody always got a chance to whip it out.
Avatar 3:13am
Scraps:

(I like Kind of Blue. I just don’t understand how that album particularly is the one jazz album that everyone knows.)
Avatar 3:14am
Scraps:

Stanley Cowell is another one of my particular favorites.
  3:15am
markr:

You know, sometimes albums just hit the zeitgeist, like "Sgt. Pepper" or even, God knows, "Saturday Night Fever."
Avatar 3:16am

Frampton Comes Alive!
  3:17am
markr:

Yep. Hey, I think Marion was rockin' some klezmer there for a minute!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22am
coelacanth∅:

i think kind of blue is both absolute Brilliance and also "accessible"
to the "casual" or new listener
  3:23am
markr:

Yep, it's inoffensive if you want some background music or something, but really deep when you turn it up and concentrate. There's a lot more than meets the ear at first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25am
coelacanth∅:

(whereas agharta or on the corner... etc etc etc... are just too -yeah, maybe "offensive".)
Avatar 3:27am
Scraps:

Man, On the Corner is immediately accessible to me. And it’s one of my very favorites of Miles. Huh.
  3:28am
markr:

Took me while (actually a LONG while) to appreciate "On the Corner," too, but once I got it, I really GOT it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28am
coelacanth∅:

the vibe of all blues or freddie freeloader is so perfect, the arrangements and the execution flawless...just put one of those right after some crazy out there track and calm right the fuck down
  3:29am
markr:

A lot of punk rockers dig Miles' heavy mid-70s electric period, I've noticed.
Avatar 3:30am
Scraps:

It’s weird, though, that I’ve never been able to pick one favorite of Miles. Weird as in I can pick a favorite on any other musician I like...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30am
coelacanth∅:

on the corner was immediately accessible to me too, but that's because i never heard it 'till i'd already heard so much else of Miles'
(although - bitches brew was also immediately accessible to me, and i think that was the first Miles album i heard)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33am
coelacanth∅:

actually, now i think about it, it took me a long time to appreciate kind of blue.
....i guess we're all different!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33am
coelacanth∅:

(i don't have a favorite, but that's typical of me)
Avatar 3:35am
VincentNifigance:

Hey Mark R, and old (Circle) timers.
Avatar 3:35am

I’m a list-maker, and ranker.
  3:39am
markr:

Hey there Vince!
Avatar 3:40am
Scraps:

Was that.... emo?
  3:43am
markr:

According to the "experts" at Pitchfork magazine, Indian Summer were indeed "emo".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44am
coelacanth∅:

Scraps i was too, when i was little but at some point i realised i really don't have favorites of a lot of things. i like all the seasons about the same; i have no favorite color or favorite food or type of woman i prefer...
and when it comes to music it's just overwhelming! the only way i'm able to answer questions like "who's your favorite..." is by imagining it's life or death that i answer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44am
Mike Sin:

I have trouble keeping up with all the bands named " Indian Summer"
Avatar 3:45am

I think that’s more healthy than me....
Avatar 3:45am

(for coelacanthØ)
  3:46am
markr:

I shall shed a (little) bit of light on that topic Mike, and welcome-- you're up late!
Avatar 3:52am
Scraps.:

That Rebuilding the Rights of Statues was interesting, so I looked them up. Chinese post-punk band, apparently! Now I’m very interested
Avatar 4:28am
Scraps:

Love Betty Carter, thanks
  4:28am
markr:

I love her, too.
  4:30am
markr:

Oh that would have been such a nice segue!
Avatar 4:32am

I love “Black Peter” — my favorite Dead song — but I don’t know if it’s Hunter
Avatar 4:36am

Ah. Well, now I know!

Thanks for tuning in tonight, those of you who are still left, or perhaps a few early birds waiting for "Shrunken Planet." I may be back soon-ish. We'll see.
