Nice start this morning Joe
  9:07am Brendan:

This is the horniest intro (sans Barry White) that I’ve ever heard

This set so far is perfect for easing into Monday

Joey Baby,
Real autumnal feel this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Colleen:

Always enjoy the show, Joe!
Avatar 9:18am Joe McG:

Thanks, Colleen! @fleep: You, too! @LixLife: Ah, that's what I was going for, glad you're feeling it.
Avatar 9:20am Lixiviated Life:

... and Chet Baker to boot.
You must love a torch song don't ya Joe?
Chet.... that reed like, haunting voice.
Slay me.
Avatar 9:24am Lixiviated Life:

The end of summer and the coming frost
the thinning trees and a hint of bare branches.
the close of the regular baseball season and the inevitable collapse of the Mets.
Oh Autumn,
you are the season of loss.

  9:27am MplsCoco:

Good morning Joe! Thank you for this music! ❤️
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am melinda:

Nice set. Love Bewitched.
  9:28am Mike Wolf:

Yeah, thanks for that Keely song Joe. I was lucky to see her with Sam Butera (Louis and Keely’s old saxist) in Vegas in 1994, then got the chance to interview her in the early 2000s for Time Out — she was so generous with the stories and (as far as I could tell) did not sugarcoat any of it. Great woman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am steveo:

early autumn! (90 degrees in greater Jersey City today -- ack!)
Avatar 9:32am βrian:

Oh, no. Things don't slow. They become frenetic. I mean, cold weather's coming!
  9:33am Mike Wolf:

Joe, whose version of “Early Autumn” is this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am melinda:

@steveo that makes me feel better about the 85 degrees here in Maine. I don't mind it except for the fact that I already tossed my window fan because it was broken in a way that made it impossible to dissemble and clean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am karlward:

Autumn makes me want to hear the Misfits covering Doris Day. Joy Division covering Doris Day is also acceptable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am The Oscar:

Mornin'! Back in my record store days we had to make handwritten placeholder cards for sealed CDs to put in the racks, and it became a game to quickly and accurately recreate the album covers on post-its. My two favorite people to draw were Chet Baker and Hank Williams; both had sharp features and beady eyes that were immensely satisfying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am melinda:

@Oscar haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Planet Tyler:

  9:43am Rachel Bo Bachel:

LOVE Lee Hazlewood- thank you Joe!!!
Avatar 9:44am Joe McG:

@Andrea: Right? It just seems like time needs to SLOW DOWN.
  9:45am Brendan:

I agree Joe. I am happy to live in a four seasons locale, but no other season takes the edge off and says cool like fall. Autumn. The other climate change. Ask for it by name.
  9:46am chrestii @coffee before work:

fleep- as soon as there’s light in the sky. Also, tennis is free before 8
Avatar 9:47am Joe McG:

@Rachel: My pleasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am steveo:

Melinda -- it's supposed to be snowing already in Maine (my spouse is from Brunswick so I can make this joke :)

Oh hey, also I had a nice moment listening to a (very good) Bethany archive over the weekend. That Terry Riley piece was on and thought it reminded me of some Who song and I checked the comment board and there you were mentioning Baba O'Riley, "but of course" and I was like haha me too.
  9:47am thea:

Enjoying the idea of a crisp autumn morning here on the south coast of nowhere. I missed hearing the artist/title of the instrumental interlude between Doris and Lee as I was preparing my morning coffee...Thanks for the lovely sounds

  10:15am prudy:

this Sandro Perri is wondrous!
  10:17am Brendan:

This could have slid right in on Astral Weeks
Avatar 10:17am Joe McG:

@Brendan: I think you've hit on some DNA there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am steveo:

And then there was this comment made by some reader named "Stu", saying that he liked what he was listening to but he got the feeling from the song that it was in the 70's and was "a little too "lonely" for today, although of course I was wrong. But I figured Stu was probably older than a lot of me and is like me, so I thought it was time to revisit Baba and I'm just going to give it a whirl. In any case, now you guys know why I like it so much.
Avatar 10:20am Joe McG:

This song is doing what I want time to do. Expand instead of contract.

I will definitely check that out Morphe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am The Oscar:

The Radio Rethink thumbnail for this Donovan is a poster for Bob Dylan's Don't Look Back, which feels like some supreme shade.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Hughie Considine:

Back when you could reference a snail in the first line of your cool new song.

my mother hated that my older sister liked that song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Listener Scott:

This song contains echoes of Pulp's Common People
Avatar 10:53am Joe McG:

@Scott: I can hear that, but it's a bit the other way around! Maybe Pulp was ripping them off. :)

@Lixiviated Life - what about Schlitz?
  11:16am prudy:

whatever happened to Schlitz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am pantz:

or even a Schlimazel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am tim from champaign:

Rod Stewart falls into my mental category of "musicians who have incredible songs and absolutely terrible songs". Bob Seger and Van Morrison are also in this category.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Asheville Jon:

"happened to Schlitz"? it's still brewed and sold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Asheville Jon:

i mean if you mean the original, then you'll have to read their history.
  11:21am prudy:

not around here (Schlitz)...I haven't seen it in many years....
Avatar 11:21am Rev. Turnip Druid:

And yes. Larry Wallis, Rest In Pink.

Also: hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am steveo:

A guy named Gordon Huntley playing the pedal steel on Rod's Dylan cover. Huntley also played with Fairport Convention and on the track "Country Comfort" on Elton John's second album, Tumbleweed Connection, among others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am coelacanth∅:

my local pub had schlitz a few years ago, $1.50/can. one of the few cheap beers i like; but they stopped getting it.
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

@steveo: Nice info!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am steveo:

"His early playing career was with the Hawaiian Serenaders in 1959, for whom he played a triple neck Fender lap steel guitar. He converted this to a pedal steel by adding an accelerator pedal from a tractor connected with bicycle brake cable."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am tim from champaign:

I posted this on Stashu's show a few weeks ago but here's a hard hitting investigative journalism piece I wrote for a local rag about 10 years on the re-branded Schlitz: www.smilepolitely.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am coelacanth∅:

i think Rod Stewart was mostly good and sometimes Excellent until a certain point in the 70s when he jumped on the disco bandwagon and mostly sucked from then on.
several excellent albums.
Avatar 11:25am βrian:

The farmers I knew would call that an "exhilarator" pedal. "It really makes 'er go."

Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@coelacanth: I agree that the pickins get slimmer as the years go by. I love all of his Mercury stuff and the first couple of Atlantics and then it starts getting dicey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am steveo:

anyway, cool Joe, thanks. i enjoy learning about all those session folks.
  11:27am prudy:

I love early R Stewart and his work with the Faces....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am tim from champaign:

No problem, Marc! I figured it was apropo of the conversation.
Avatar 11:30am Joe McG:

@RR63: Bert re-recorded his hits a lot in later years, but in general the quality standard is of the highest no matter what era you choose.
Avatar 11:30am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Even Rod's hits - worst thing is overexposure...& comparison to better stuff...
