Tres groovy so far - got a work thing, catch you all after 5 (hour 3)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Passaic River Blues:

@Sheila: I think you recently lamented the lack of recent reissues and anthologies focusing on female African artists. Yesterday, Trouble played a truly excellent cut off of the Africa Seven label's "Return to the Mothers' Garden (More Funky Sounds of Female Africa 1971-1982)" comp. It may be worth checking out.

  3:24pm Jazzy Jas:

Pomegranates - such a tremendous comp. Own on CD and vinyl.
Avatar 3:24pm djsheilab:

Passaic River Blues—I'm with you on these comps! Played the second volume a few weeks back. I actually sent the label a note telling them how much I appreciated them digging into the female side of things :)
Avatar 3:24pm djsheilab:

Jazzy Jas—YESSSSS!!!!
  3:25pm BriJet:

Lovin' this song and need to explore more Persian music!!
Avatar 3:26pm djsheilab:

I recently went through the majority of the catalogue of a big African reissue label, and I was floored by how few women were featured. Maybe 3-4 women total on 50+ comps. ARGGGHHHH!!!!
  3:27pm P-90:

Arriving a bit late, with Belated Happy Birthday Wishes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Passaic River Blues:

@Sheila: I should have known you were already on top of it!
Avatar 3:29pm djsheilab:

BriJet—So glad you dig! It's my favorite Persian pop song hands down!

Yes, it’s all about the “overplayed” thing
  3:41pm Patrick Hoboken:

Take it Easy > Hotel California imho... so sunny, so evocative...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm The Oscar:

Documentary Now did a pretty good two-parter loosely based on the Eagles documentary ("Gentle and Soft: The Story of the Blue Jean Committee"). Definitely worth a watch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm eyenoise:

Please keep this an Eagles-free zone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm eyenoise:

Sorry for the typo . I know how to spell SHEILA!!!
Avatar 3:43pm djsheilab:

Thanks for the birthday love, gang!
  3:43pm Karen:

Happy Birthday Sheila B!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm JtotheK:

a habit i've gotten into is when coming across 45s I'm not familiar with is to do internet research by looking if said 45 was spun on WFMU. recent search was for Gloria Becker 'Sixteen Pounds', which I saw was the first 45 spun on your show when you moved to afternoons, @sheilaB! (so I knew it was worth the 2 dollars...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like any FMUvian I aspire to open-mindedness
...but I have trouble with a lot of Mainstrem late 1970s & 80s from forced - & truly unrelenting over-exposure...
Music & Culture are Emotional - & therefore highly contextual in one very major respect...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm tim from champaign:

Forget the Eagles! This Mariana Ingold is where it's at!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm mr. mnemonic:

i always just remember that SHE is SHEila :)
Avatar 3:47pm djsheilab:

tim from champaign—Such an intriguing track, right?
Avatar 3:47pm djsheilab:

RRNov63—Aspiring to open-mindedness! Beautifully said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Patrick agreed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm tim from champaign:

Yes it is! Also, your open mindedness (re watching the Eagles doc to learn more) is very admirable, Sheila!
  3:49pm John from Florham park:

@RRN63 one thing I am tired of hearing is The Beatles, just the same songs over and over gets very old after a while
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& F Yeah Kids <3 !
  3:49pm Patrick Hoboken:

Loving that Lana Del Rey album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm tneeld:

Hi all! A little late today, but in time for the heavily censored LDR.
Avatar 3:50pm djsheilab:

Patrick Hoboken—Indeed! Thankfully our music director got a hold of some clean versions for me.
Avatar 3:52pm Third World Man:

Sheila: I was driving home from work when you asked about Hotel California. I listen mostly to your show, Evan, Zoe B, and Reggae schoolroom. Sometimes to Honkey Tonk Girl. I find that most people our age loved Hotel California when it came out in 1976. Think about it. A reggae song by a country rock band with a great solo about the California Lifestyle. The eagles were the biggest band in the world at the time and New Wave was just around the corner. Then it became hip to diss the eagle and bands like them. Most people who say meh to the eagles are secretly eagles fans.
Avatar 3:53pm djsheilab:

Hey tneeld + mr. mnemonic + The Oscar + eyenoise + karen + Smokestack + harold fridkis + thormagma!
  3:53pm Jazzy Jas:

Hot damn this Hollie Cook is TREMENDOUS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Often enjoys docs when meh or worse about Artists...
But - been a Beatlemaniac since the original runs of their Cartoon Show! Highest Beatle tolerance of anyone I personally know.
This is one reason I can't wriggle out of acknowledging Pop - in any sense of the word....despite a pretty strong AntiPopulist streak...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm tim from champaign:

Don Frey and Glenn Henley remind me of the two biggest dicks in high school that were not on the football team who crashed their car while extremely loaded into a bank and then got rewarded for it.
Avatar 3:54pm djsheilab:

Third World Man—Oh what a fabulous post. Thank you! I too love that country-rock-reggae combo. Just such a unique + undeniable sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Honestly yeah tim.
  3:56pm P-90:

Yay! for
  3:57pm Jocelyn:

  3:57pm P-90:

Yay! for Hollie Cook
  3:57pm Jazzy Jas:

Carolyn Crawford is soooo precious. Spent some time with her in Detroit.
  3:57pm John from Florham park:

@Tim and @RRN63 I got the feeling the whole eagles band was a bunch of dicks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm tneeld:

I had no idea Boy George is Hollie Cook's godfather! The strange things that SBB inspires me to discover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm JtotheK:

nice carolyn crawford track!
Avatar 3:58pm Third World Man:

Sheila, there is a Bear Family Box set I am going to send you digitally. It's called "The Blissed out Birth of Country Rock"

  3:59pm Karen:

Gotta say, your show is so spot on that Pup Bowie and I skipped our regular televised (late) lunch break. We’ll just have to wait to find out what happens in Das Boot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm tim from champaign:

Similarly to tneeld, I had no idea who Hollie Cook let alone her family history. Thanks Sheila!
Avatar 4:00pm djsheilab:

BACK TO THE EAGLES EVERYONE! ;) I did very much enjoy the point in the documentary when they came to Glenn Frey's solo career. "Smuggler's Blues" and "The Heat Is On" and "You Belong to the City" are something else. The chutzpah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm tneeld:

I had no excuse re: Hollie Cook! I just watched The Slits documentary earlier this year.
  4:00pm John from Florham park:

@Tneeld ever since I happened on this station I have been turned on to so much great music and a lot of it off the beaten path, one of the reasons why I have given up on commercial radio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Passaic River Blues:

@Tim & Tneeld: Hollie was on SSB last year and it was incredible:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I love plenty of stuff twixt Country & Rawk too - so it's not that.
Avatar 4:01pm Third World Man:

I WAS AN EXTRA on Miami Vice during the Smugglers Blues episode. I grew up in Davie, FL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm tneeld:

@Passaic River Blues - thanks! Yet another episode of SBB for me to dig into. A wealth of riches.
  4:02pm John from Florham park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm tneeld:

@John - oh definitely! I've been listening since 1992 or so (which feels like a little amount of time compared to others here), and it changed my world.

  4:07pm P-90:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Phillippe Bastille:

Best song the Eagles ever did was a Jackson Browne song...
  4:08pm Karen:

But it’s Eagles gossip to a very different soundtrack.
Avatar 4:08pm Third World Man:

Jackson was almost an eagle.
  4:08pm MelindafromAustin:

I believe Santo is a male Saint - but it is also used to refer to a Priest in the Santeria tradition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...featureless bourgeois lowest common denominator pre-chewed culture to provide a simulacrum of rebellion without actually threatening anything or the strain of individual thot
...uh yeah 'Boys of Summer' ain't the worst...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm RomanDogBird:

the only thing i like about the eagles is the use of "disco strangler" in the cruisin' gourmet sketch on SCTV
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Phillippe Bastille:

P-90 agree whole-heartedly!
Avatar 4:09pm Third World Man:

and the eagles helped record Jackson's Late For the Sky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Ike:

Thank you for explaining to the poor demented pro-Don-Felder maniacs that, yes, we come here to ESCAPE from that kind of thing. Now can you do us a favor and explain that to Matt Warwick too?

(The Eagles *did* do the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme though, but it was written by the drummer or something, who rarely if ever wrote anything for them, which explains why it doesn't sound like any of their other junk.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm YupiHaveOne:

Soon as u said Holly is on Merge records, I knew she had to be great.
Avatar 4:10pm Third World Man:

Don Henley was the drummer for the eagles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Carmichael:

Heya Sheila. I'll stay if the Eagles talk fades away ...:)
  4:11pm Vanessa Tara:

thank you! - signed from montreal originally
  4:11pm Karen:

@Ike whoa. I would never have guessed that.
  4:11pm harold fridkis:

you mentioned the eagles on today's show. unfortunately, hotel California is boring 70s rock. I never really liked that song all that much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I would like to meet Joe Walsh.
Avatar 4:12pm Third World Man:

harold you loved it when you first heard it.
Avatar 4:13pm Third World Man:

It's like Vivaldi's four seasons. It's everywhere, so you got sick of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Back in the days when Howard Stern was my morning radio entertainment, he had Joe Walsh on a couple of times. Joe Walsh funny.
  4:13pm harold fridkis:

I like the shangri-las much better than the eagles.
  4:13pm Jazzy Jas:

God this Sorry Girls is magnificent. Needs to be in a David Lynch movie like NOW.

  4:15pm Patrick Hoboken:

Belinda Carlisle: perfect 1987 female vocal power pop song
  4:16pm John from Florham park:

@TWM damn straight ok rock stations back in the day before you could stream stations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Ike:

Oops, sorry, not the drummer. Bernie Leadon wrote "Journey of the Sorcerer" and played banjo on it. The banjo makes it a lot less bland and colorless than most of their stuff.
Avatar 4:17pm Third World Man:

Fun fact. WSHE went from southern rock in 1979-80 to new wave for a year. One day they we were hearing Double Vision and the next Day London Calling. Then they switched back.
  4:17pm P-90:

RRN63: I met Joe years ago at a Renaissance Faire in California, actually took part in an after-hours singalong around a campfire with Joe and a bunch of the Faire people. Cool dude to hang out with. A nineties memory.
  4:17pm yippie:

does she want earth and heaven to be completely mixed evenly together?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm tneeld:

@John - my college job in the 90's was listening to videotape recordings of NYC radio stations to find commercials to sell to other advertisers. In other words, fast forwarding through Howard Stern every day to find the Sprint commercials.
Avatar 4:18pm Third World Man:

It was like the switch from hair metal to grunge. almost overnight
  4:18pm John from Florham park:

@TWM moved to South Florida in 83
  4:19pm Jamie Simpson:

Just want to say I have been listening to this station for 11 years now, since I was 16! I've taken it with me as I've lived and moved around the world from my hometown of Los Angeles, to all of my travels in the Navy. The app has made this so easy, don't know what I'd do without it. Listening from Manchester UK right now.
Love my WFMU
Avatar 4:19pm Third World Man:

John, I miss those stations. They were fun. I was in 7th grade and could ride my bike over to the WSHE studios and hang out. Eventually they put me to work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm frozen_peas:

@TWM did you know Herman and mcbean

@Sheliab thought your were not a day over 21:)

The long Eagles doc revealed even more unsavory stuff than I wanted to forget in the first place. I am a fan of Randy's song though, and my band did Boys of Summer w/o irony.

@TWM: I'm now in Orlando (until one of these full time jobs in the state pan out), and it was the first mild 'morn of the season at 66F/19C, but it's 85F/31C right now...
  4:43pm P-90:

@Jamie: So cool that you were able to take WFMU with you, via the internet. Before that were times I traveled and just had to leave it behind, and times I lived in other parts of the country and did without for years at a time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm northguineahills:

@P-90:Since I've know WFMU, it's been online, so even in NYC I'd listen online. Then the app really changed things.!..(thanks Kenzo et al!)
Avatar 4:45pm Third World Man:

How long are you in Orlando? You probably can hear Cuba on 530 AM down there.

@P-90 now that I think of it, I think the first thing I ever streamed online was WFMU circa around 1997? I think on RealPlayer or some old thing.

How has Sade's music not aged in any way? It's an eternal mystery to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm northguineahills:

@tneeld: I read an article in the Wire (I think) about WFMU, and when I worked late the next day, it took a while, but the real player came up, and crappy, tinny, but amazing sounds!
Avatar 4:57pm Third World Man:

NGH you can hear Jamaican music at night in Central Fla on 1540 via the Bahamas. Maybe even during the day depending on your location.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm tneeld:

@northguineahills - oh yes! I remember how completely terrible it sounded and how it cut out all the time (I was in central Jersey at the time and couldn't get it over the air), but I was so happy I could finally listen again.
Avatar 4:59pm Third World Man:

For me it took SUW for me to discover WFMU.
Avatar 5:00pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

@NGH and @Third World Man: sorta related, but highly recommend checking out radio.garden . It lets you scroll a globe of the world and you can hear radio station live broadcasts from all over.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Carmichael:

No way! I didn't know they were in your area. Hope it was fantastic. I need to contact PJ ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Carmichael:

This is Jack Harris singing lead. He was involved a lot with Pilot and John Miles.
  5:24pm Jocelyn:

Hi Greg! I haven’t seen you in a while! I hope everything’s been well.
  5:25pm Patrick Hoboken:

Sheila you know Emmitt ?! Great actor who has taught me a lot about Shakespeare!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Carmichael:

He really livens things up, doesn't he?
Avatar 5:26pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

I'm currently packing up my things in preparation for moving back to the US in November. Any listeners have tips of how to pack lots of LPs (~500 or so) so they arrive safely?
Avatar 5:26pm djsheilab:

Patrick Hoboken—I met him at the Alan Parsons gig! He said he listens to my show. I didn't know he was a Shakespearen actor!
Avatar 5:27pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

@Jocelyn: All is well! Super busy as I live out the last 1.5 months in Korea, before heading back to the US.
Avatar 5:27pm djsheilab:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm frozen_peas:

this is dreamy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Carmichael:

@EM in Seoul, I use footlockers. LPs fit perfectly edgewise, although they end up being fairly heavy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm dreamyandseedy:

i'm here and i'm giddy! listened to the first hour while driving rural highways
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm northguineahills:

@EarlyMorningin Seoul: Don't hire the Russian movers I did in Brooklyn (they only destroyed the shelving, not the recs). seriously, just find something close to 33-34x33-34cmx33-34cm boxes and stuff them in. they've worked for me. Wrap carefully if shellac....
Avatar 5:29pm djsheilab:

Hey frozen_peas + dreamyandseedy!
  5:29pm Jocelyn:

Lots of small boxes, bubble wrap, leave no gaps or empty spaces in the boxes
Avatar 5:29pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

@Carmichael: that's a good idea. Yeah I can definitely see them being a heavy lift!
  5:30pm Briguyhere:

So pretty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm northguineahills:

what Joceyn said, I've never used bubble wrap except for records smaller then 12".
Avatar 5:31pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

@NGH: Thanks for the tip! I'm going to check with my friend who has a record store to see if I can get some of the boxes from their deliveries.
Avatar 5:32pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

@Jocelyn: Yep, I have tons and tons of bubble wrap. I've been saving lots of Amazon and packing stuff from them too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm northguineahills:

@EMIS:It took me 4 days to move my recs to my friend's place in my Subaru, and he only lived 1.5 km away. (late July)
Avatar 5:35pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

@NGH: That sounds comparably easier. My collection is moving all the way from Korea to Baltimore/Maryland area! It seems like everything made it here safely when I first moved, but I've increased a lot since then.
  5:35pm Briguyhere:

The same space you allow your songs to fade you should allow yourself to just be :) You’re amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm tneeld:

I totally notice the amazing segues on SBB, but now I kind of feel bad that I notice them? Sometimes accidents can be just as meaningful/beautiful? I second @Briguyhere!
  5:37pm karen eliot:

yes. you’re an artist! I get obsessed like that too. it’s okay as long as it doesn’t hurt your health or interf
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Phillippe Bastille:

@EarlyMorningInSeoul Where are you moving to? I'm in Annapolis, recently moved from Clarksville
  5:38pm karen eliot:

Oops. period after health.
  5:38pm Patrick Hoboken:

@djsheilab: yes, Emmitt is a great Shakespearean actor/director! (Well, not just Shakespeare - other playwrights too)
  5:39pm Jamie:

meditation is the only thing that works for me Sheila, highly recommend ❤
  5:40pm karen eliot:

Great show!
Avatar 5:41pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

Avatar 5:45pm djsheilab:

Thanks ross!
Avatar 5:46pm ncjay:

but we still get to complement you on impeccable segues, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm northguineahills:

@EMIS:The only boxes that made it from Brooklyn to FL unscathed were my recs and turntables. It might have helped that the foreman (mover) was really into vinyl.
  5:46pm Rick G:

Greetings super late! Just landed at SeaTac from a trip to Denver. Bad traffic now. I skipped a chance to see Giuda at the Bluebird while I was gone-bummer!
Avatar 5:47pm Monica:

  5:47pm jake:

first time listening to the show, really dig the music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm tneeld:

The more I think of it, the wonderful segues are nice, but the best thing about SBB is the feeling you put into the show. That's the most important part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm Passaic River Blues:

@Jake: come back around next week. There hasn't been a bad show yet.
  5:49pm Patrick Hoboken:

agree with @Jamie; meditation is a great way to press "pause" and get perspective.
